Abstract Live fencing, an age old and traditional agroforestry practice, remains relatively less understood and least documented at least in India. Exploratory surveys conducted in the northern part of the Eastern ghat region of India covering five districts of three states (Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chhatisgarh), indicated that traditional farmers have vast knowledge about their live fencing practices and the species used. Two groups of species were observed on the fence. The first group of thirty three species were used primarily for protection and denoted as fence species. Together, they also provide 22 other products and services. The second group of species maintained on the fences for production purposes include five fruit trees, fifteen other trees and two climbers. The fencing practices were classified into two groups (single species and multiple species live fence systems) depending on the species used and into three groups (live fencing around field crops, around backyards or homesteads and around orchards/plantations) depending on the landscapes being protected. Only 20% of fences were dominated by single species; the rest were under multiple species.Ninety percent of house backyards were fenced, whereas only one percent of crop fields and seventy percent orchards were fenced. Groundwater is an essential natural resource for mankind. Due to various geogenic and anthropogenic causes, groundwater quality has raised serious concern over the years. In this study, groundwater quality was evaluated for its suitability for irrigation in the Jorhat and Golaghat Districts of Assam, India. A total of 100 groundwater samples were collected from shallow aquifers (< 35 m) from different locations during the pre-monsoon season (March-April 2022). Groundwater in the study area is slightly alkaline in nature (mean pH value of 7.44). The average cations and anions chemistry are in the order of Na +  > Ca 2+ > Mg 2+  > K + and HCO 3 -  > Cl -  > SO 4 2-  > CO 3 -Cl are the primary water types in the study area. Pearson's correlation matrix showed a positive correlation between TDS and EC (r = 0.78) and sodium showed a positive correlation with TDS and bicarbonate (r = 0.62 and r = 0.65), respectively. Gibbs plot indicated that rock-water interaction is the dominant factor that controls the chemistry of the groundwater of the area. Irrigation parameters like Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR), Permeability Index (PI), Magnesium Absorption Ratio (MAR), Kelly's Ratio (KR), and Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI) indicated that groundwater is overall suitable for irrigation. USSL diagram illustrated that most of the samples fell into the C2 (medium salinity) and S1 (low sodium hazard) categories. Wilcox plot showed the samples fell in excellent to good categories indicating fitness of groundwater for irrigation in the area.2- , respectively. Groundwater serves as an important resource for drinking and agriculture in many countries, including India. Assessing the quality of groundwater is essential for understanding its chemical characteristics and suitability for consumption. This study aims to explore the factors affecting the hydrogeochemical changes in groundwater within Guwahati City, Assam, India. Groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for major and trace elements, as well as anion concentrations. Concentrations of As, Al, Ba, Cu, F - , Fe, Mn, and Pb exceeded the permissible limits set by both World Health Organization (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), indicating serious health concerns for the local inhabitants. The distribution pattern of trace elements exceeding the guideline values is intricate, suggesting widespread contamination of groundwater throughout the study area. The Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) and Water Quality Index (WQI) revealed that, except for the central zone, groundwater across the entire study area requires intervention. Piper plot illustrated that the groundwater is predominantly of Ca-HCO 3 type, indicating the dominance of alkaline earth and weak acids. Groundwater hydrogeochemistry is mainly controlled by rock-water interaction and evolves through silicate weathering, carbonate weathering, and cation exchange processes. Multivariate statistical analysis identified distinct groups of groundwater based on chemical characteristics, emphasizing the role of both natural processes and anthropogenic activities in influencing groundwater quality. Regular monitoring, management, and intervention of groundwater sources throughout the study area are crucial for long-term use. Scanning electron microscopy on the postembryonic development of the mouthpart sensory structures of the Muga silk moth, Antheraea assamensis revealed the presence of a variety of sensilla. The types, distribution pattern of the sensilla remained almost the same in the different larval stages except for the number and dimension in some cases. The findings of the study assumes significance because the silk moth, Antheraea assamensis is a species endemic to the North Eastern part of India and very few reports are available on it. In fact, the present study provides the first report on the ontogeny of the mouth part sensilla of the silk moth species. Since mouth part sensilla and their surface micro structural characteristics are extremely important in understanding their roles in searching behavior during feeding, the present study will certainly help in developing strategies for proper rearing of this economically important insect species., (Copyright © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

An aprotinin sensitive serine protease was identified in the culture supernatant of the Indian strain of Leishmania donovani (MHOM/IN/1983/AG83). The protease was subsequently purified and characterized. The apparent molecular mass of the enzyme was 115 kDa in SDS-PAGE under non-reducing condition, while on reduction it showed a 56 kDa protein band indicating that the protease is a dimeric protein. The purified enzyme was optimally active at the pH and temperature of 7.5 and 28 degrees C, respectively. Assays of thermal stability indicated that the enzyme preserved 59% of activity even after pretreatment at 42 degrees C for 1 h. The purified protease was not glycosylated and its isoelectric pI was 5.0. N-alpha-p-tosyl-L-arginine methylester (TAME) appeared to be relatively better substrate among the commonly used synthetic substrates. The enzyme was inhibited by Ca(2+) and Mn(2+), but activated by Zn(2+). The protease could play important role(s) in the pathogenesis of visceral leishmaniasis or kala-azar.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a technique for obliterating intracranial targets that are inaccessible or unsuitable for open surgical techniques. By means of well-collimated beams of ionizing radiation, a high-dose, single fraction of radiation is delivered to a defined volume of tissue. The entrance and exit doses are distributed in such a way that tissue outside the target is minimally affected. Treatment effects are seen on scans or angiograms after several months or a few years; consequently, follow-up scans are necessary. The first 72 patients who underwent SRS at the Department of Neurological Sciences and Radiation Therapy, Christian Medical College and Hospital were followed. Of the 72 treated, 35 had arteriovenous malformations, while 37 had brain tumors. Of the 37 patients with brain tumors, 14 had meningioma and 17 had acoustic neuroma. Six patients had other lesions such as pineal tumor, hemangioblastoma, astrocytoma, or metastasis. Of 72 patients, 43 came for follow-up. Twenty-three of the followed-up patients showed improvement; 10 clinically and radiologically remained the same, and 2 died due to recurrence. Of 43 patients, 3 continue to have cranial nerve deficit. Four patients were later found to have central necrosis and clinical deterioration. Observation of outcomes following SRS helps neuroscience nurses identify home healthcare strategies such as chest care, eye care, facial massage, and exercises along with the other specific nursing care. Although nursing care has become more technically oriented, the patient's physical, educational, spiritual, and emotional needs must be addressed.
