Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely utilized chemical found in numerous everyday products, including plastic containers, food packaging, and thermal paper. Research has linked BPA exposure to a range of health concerns, encompassing developmental and reproductive issues, cancer, and obesity. Given India's status as one of the world's largest producers and consumers of plastic goods, understanding the potential risks associated with BPA exposure and its health impacts on the Indian population is of paramount importance. This paper conducts a comparative analysis of BPA sources, environmental levels, migration, and health impacts in India in comparison to other countries. By examining data from various nations, we aim to discern overarching trends and patterns in BPA exposure and its associated health effects. This analysis serves as a foundation for the development of policies and regulations designed to safeguard public health. While the Indian government has taken some regulatory steps, such as banning the production, import, and sale of BPA-containing polycarbonate baby bottles, there is a notable absence of specific regulations or bans on BPA in other food-contact materials (FCMs). Studies conducted in India have detected BPA in various food items, underscoring the potential risk of BPA exposure through food consumption. This emphasizes the urgent need for effective monitoring and control of BPA migration in FCMs within India. In conclusion, this comparative review underscores the imperative for ongoing research and rigorous monitoring of BPA exposure and its health impacts in India, as well as in other nations. Safeguarding the health of the general public necessitates a comprehensive understanding of BPA's prevalence, sources, and consequences. By implementing and refining regulations, such as extending bans on BPA in additional FCMs, policymakers can work towards mitigating the risks associated with BPA exposure and ensuring the safety of populations worldwide. The research investigates the escalating consumption of take-out food in India and the associated health risks stemming from the extensive use of plastic packaging. Through a comprehensive nationwide online survey, the study delved into dietary preferences, frequency of take-out food consumption, delivery service timing, and the types of packaging commonly encountered by Indian consumers. To address these concerns, the research team developed an analytical method to detect Bisphenol A (BPA) and Phthalic acid migration from food-contact materials (FCMs) into various food simulants. The investigation revealed that prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures led to increased migration of BPA and Phthalic acid, particularly in polyethylene pouches using 3% acetic acid as a food simulant, with the highest concentrations observed after 45 minutes of exposure. Additionally, a microbial bioassay demonstrated the mutagenic potential of migrated plasticizers, showcasing significant effects in mammalian systems, particularly under metabolic activation. The study underscores the substantial health risks associated with plastic packaging in take-out food, emphasizing potential implications for consumer health and calling for more extensive research and considerations regarding food packaging materials. Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is one of the important pests of great economic significance causing serious fruit and vegetable damage in tropical and subtropical areas of the world occurs. This study aimed to investigate the effect of high fat diet on various physiological traits of females and a shift of sex ratios in favour of males to benefit biological control of this pest species. B. dorsalis individuals were collected from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, Punjab and the effect of coconut oil-based artificial diets differing in their relative levels of fat (5%, 10% and 20%) on stage-specific development, survival, hatchability were analysed at 21 °C, 65% Relative Humidity. The male: female (M/F) sex-ratios from individuals emerging from each of these diets were also scored. The findings of the study showed that B. dorsalis larvae and adults were able to survive on all three diets, although the stage-specific development and survival varied with High Fat Diet (HFD) concentration. Diet with 20% fat concentration showed most delayed development relatively to 10% and 5% concentration diet. The laboratory test showed that ingestion of fat significantly increased the development time (egg-larvae-pupae to adult) and caused increased mortality in pre-adult stages. A decrease in percentage pupation and adult emergence was also observed. Moreover, the data showed a significant shift in M/F ratios for regular food, HFD 5%, and HFD 10% with 46.7%, 45.7%, and 45.9% respectively and all female biased. Only HFD 20% produced male biased ratio of 74.4%. Adults fed on 20% HFD produced significantly fewer eggs as well as reversed the male: female sex ratio from 1:1.28 to 2.9: 1. The HFD diet elicited a higher adult lipid content, lower pupal production, adult emergence, and longer development, significantly affecting physiology of fruit flies. Field efficacy trials showed significant results with bait trap method and significantly increased the fruit yield by 51.09 Kg/tree as compared to the control. Hence, the present study illustrated the potential of HFD which can be exploited in integrated pest management strategies for capturing fruit fly pests of economic significance. In recent years, consumers are increasingly attracted to nutraceuticals, an important part of food considered propitious for human health. Therefore, consumers are willingly switching to nutraceuticals and are ready to pay the premium price. This review aims to identify various factors that govern consumer purchasing of nutraceutical products. The outcomes presented in the review provide a closer understanding of consumer attitudes toward buying behavior and their impact on the growth of the global nutraceutical market. The nutraceutical market has been identified depending on the type of nutraceuticals, forms, and regions governing the nutraceutical market. Factors such as health consciousness, knowledge about a product, product availability, price, marketing strategies, and social factors influence consumers' actual buying behavior toward nutraceutical products. A mini survey in Mumbai city of India was conducted to add practical data to the review, and factors affecting consumers' willingness to buy nutraceutical products were identified. It was observed that the decision‐making toward buying nutraceutical products was affected by gender, age, education level, and acculturation. It was also identified that the legislation governing nutraceuticals needs to be harmonized throughout many parts of the world, which restricts the growth of this sector to some extent. The findings elucidate that nutraceutical industries should overcome the regulatory barriers and focus on developing innovative products, which will keep current consumers intact and help increase the consumer base and thus expand the nutraceutical market globally. During the past two to three decades, Drosophila ananassae, a warm adapted tropical species, has invaded low to mid altitude localities in the western Himalayas. Due to its cold sensitivity, this species had never been recorded from higher latitudes as well as altitudes in India to the 1960s. A latitudinal cline in this desiccation-sensitive species corresponds with southern humid tropical localities rather than northern drier subtropical localities. An extension of its cline into lowland to midland montane localities has resulted due to global climatic change as well as local thermal effects through anthropogenic impact. However, D. ananassae populations at species borders are characterized by lower genetic variability for body melanization as well as for desiccation resistance. There is a lack of thermal plastic effects for body melanization, and the observed extended cline might represent evolutionary (genetic) response due to selection pressure imposed by drier habitats. A comparison of fecundity, hatchability and viability at three growth temperatures (17, 20 and 25°C) showed significant reduction in trait values at 17°C in D. ananassae. Thus, its recent range expansion into northern montane localities might involve genetic effects on stress-related traits and plastic effects on life history traits. We suggest that D. ananassae could serve as an indicator species for analyzing range expansion under changing climatic conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drosophila jambulina exhibits color dimorphism controlled by a single locus but its ecological significance is not clear. Dark and light morphs differ significantly in body melanisation, desiccation resistance, rate of water loss, mating activity and fecundity. Interestingly, this species lacks clinal variation for body size, desiccation resistance and life history traits. For body melanisation, lack of geographical variation as well as plastic effects is not in agreement with a thermal melanism hypothesis. However, based on field data, there are seasonal changes in phenotypic frequencies of dark and light body color morphs which correlate significantly with variation in humidity levels. Under short-term (8h) desiccation stress, we observed higher number of assortative matings, longer copulation period and increased fecundity for dark strains as compared with light strains. By contrast, both the morphs when exposed to high humid conditions exhibited higher assortative matings and fecundity for light strains as compared with dark strains. In tropical populations of D. jambulina, body color polymorphism seems to be maintained through humidity changes as opposed to thermal melanism. Thus, seasonal changes in the frequency of body color morphs in this tropical species supports melanism-desiccation hypothesis.
