Soil test crop response (STCR) based fertilizer prescription for desired yield target of pearl millet was developed under integrated plant nutrition system (STCR-IPNS) on Periyanaickenpalayam soil series (Vertic Ustropept) of Tamil Nadu, India. The present study was undertaken to validate the developed fertilizer prescription equations (FPEs) through field experiment in Western Zone of Tamil Nadu. The results emanated from the validation experiment proved the validity of the FPEs for pearl millet by recording the aimed yield targets within±10% variation. Among the treatments, STCR-IPNS-4.0 t/ha of pearl millet has proved its superiority and recorded a yield increase of 59.8, 18.7 and 89.3%, respectively over blanket, blanket plus farm yard manure (FYM) @ 12.5 t/ha and farmer's practice. The increase in response ratio due to STCR-IPNS-4.0 t/ha over blanket, blanket plus FYM @ 12.5 t/ha and farmer's practice was 1.0, 0.9 and 1.5 kg/kg, respectively, and that of benefits : cost ratio was 0.65, 0.28 and 0.79, respectively. Soil test-based fertilization resulted in increased yield, economic returns, protein content, protein yield, and either built-up or sustenance of soil fertility and the magnitude of built-up was higher with STCR-IPNS as compared to STCR-NPK alone, blanket recommendations, farmer's practice and control. To study the influence of seasonal variation on the nitrate contamination of groundwater, water samples were collected during the pre and post-monsoon seasons from open wells, bore wells and hand pumps at different villages spread over in the 18 blocks of the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. The water samples were analysed for pH, EC and NO3-N content. Results indicated that the groundwater of different blocks of Coimbatore ranged from neutral to alkaline in reaction and saline in nature. The overall mean NO3-N content of groundwater samples of different blocks varied from 5.20 to 9.52 mg L-1 with the overall mean value of 6.74 mg L-1 and it is below the critical level of 10.0 mg L-1. The higher mean NO3-N content was observed in groundwater samples collected from Gudimangalam block followed by Periyanaickenpalayam and Sultanpet blocks. The temporal variation in NO3-N content of groundwater samples was observed, being higher in the post monsoon than in the pre monsoon season. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Information is considered as a useful commodity for routine life. For anything and everything information is required. Libraries serve as center for providing right information to the right people at all times information seeking is the process of searching for the information from the information resources. It is concerned with the integrated utilization of the three basic sources i.e. People, Information and System. A sample of 592 respondents have been selected on the basis of stratified random sampling method from a population of 2368 users of library, a structured, close-ended questionnaire consisting of 40 questions was used for collection of primary data. The information collected was analyzed using different conventional tools like tables, figures, averages, percentages and chi-square tests were also used. Primary data were entered in SPSS and analyzed. The analysis has been made fewer than four sections. The study discusses the general features of respondents, explains the availability and accessibility of online information by respondents, discusses the utilization of online information, nature of extracting and storing of information and the perception of the respondents regarding existing online information. Field experiments were conducted on a Typic Haplustalf soil of Tamil Nadu by adopting the inductive cum targeted yield model, and fertilizer requirements were quantified for beetroot based on soil test and yield target. The basic parameters [nutrient requirement (NR) and contributions of nutrients from soil (Cs), fertilizer (Cf), and vermicompost (Cvermi)] were computed from the field experimental data. Using these basic parameters, we developed fertilizer prescription equations under the integrated plant nutrition system (IPNS), and nomograms were formulated for the desired yield target of beetroot for a range of soil test values. The quantity of fertilizers that could be contributed by vermicompost at 5 t ha-1 was evaluated as 40, 21, and 30 kg nitrogen (N), phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5), and potassium oxide (K2O), respectively, when applied along with the NPK fertilizers as per soil test and desired yield target.
