A field experiment with wheat was conducted at Pusa (25.98°N, 85.67°E, 52 m amsl), Bihar (middle Gangetic plains of India), to assess the responses of phenology, yield attributes, and yield to growing season temperature and heat stress. For this purpose, wheat was planted on five dates (viz., 15 November, 25 November, 5 December, 15 December, and 25 December) for three consecutive years (viz., 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017)with three prominent cultivars of the region (viz., RAU-3711, HD-2824, and HD-2733). Five dates of sowing represent different wheat-growing micro-environments as imposed by varying sowing dates encompassing the entire sowing window. The study observed the significant effect of sowing dates on phenophase duration. In general, with progress in the date of sowing, tiller initiation was delayed, while the reverse trend was observed for later growth phases. Sowing environments significantly influenced the number of effective tillers m-2. Average numbers of effective tillers (ET) m-2 for the wheat sown during 15-25 November were almost 11.6% higher than those of the 25 December sown crop. Grain filling duration (GFD) showed a declining trend with the advancement of sowing dates due to increased thermal load on the crop during the reproductive period. 15 November planted crop exhibited the highest GFD (47 days), which was shortened significantly beyond 25 November, signifying agrometeorological non-suitability of wheat sowing beyond this window. Wheat sown on 25 November recorded the highest grain yield (3.21 Mg ha-1), 48.61% higher than the 25 December sown crop due to the congenial thermal regime. In this context, we have identified optimal and sub-optimal conditions to escape heat stress for higher wheat productivity. Moreover, the sumof deviation of temperature fromoptimumthresholds, computed for sensitive growth phases (50% flowering to physiological maturity), helped us to identify heat stress and its impact on wheat. Genotype-by-environment (GGE) biplot analysis revealed that RAU-3711 was found to be themost stable cultivar. A decrease in the yield of wheat by 4.9% to 12.0%, sown during November, and 33.8% to 42.4%, sown during December, is predicted in 2050-51 and 2080-81, respectively, under RCP 4.5. Forests absorb atmospheric carbon and hence play a vital role in carbon sequestration and climate regulation. Recent research emphasizes developing technology and methods to understand the carbon sequestration potential in various forest ecosystems. Forest stand height estimation is one of the crucial parameters in allometry that estimates forest biomass. An attempt is made in this study to map forest stand height in tropical and sub-tropical forests in India using recently launched spaceborne LiDAR platforms Ice Cloud and Elevation Satellite (ICESat-2) and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI). A geostatistical kriging approach is used to interpolate the forest stand height, and the generated stand height surface is validated using ground truth samples. The results showed that GEDI data performed better with an RMSE of 3.99 m and 2.62 m in tropical forests than the ICESat-2 data, which showed an RMSE of 5.71 m and 5.08 m, respectively. A similar pattern was observed in sub-tropical forests where GEDI modelled stand height outperformed ICESat-2 modelled stand height. This analysis demonstrates the potential of existing spaceborne LiDAR platforms in interpolating forest stand height at different forest types. Also, the research emphasizes the necessity of a high density of LiDAR footprints spread in both across- and along-track directions for accurate interpolation of forest stand height. Studies on wheat-weather relationship were carried out at Pusa (25.98 oN, 85.67 oE, 52 m), Bihar situated in middle Gangetic plains of India, with three popular wheat cultivars viz. RW 3711, HD 2824 and HD273, grown under five fixed dates of sowing viz. 15 November, 25 November, 5 December, 15 December and 25 December, for five consecutive rabi seasons from 2011-12 to 2015-16. Thresholds of maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin) and bright sunshine hours (BSH), associated with higher productivity, occurring at different phenophases, were determined. Results revealed that temperature played a crucial role in achieving higher grain yield of wheat. Both Tmax and Tmin during flowering to milking and flowering to maturity phases increased with delayed sowing dates beyond 25 November with consequent reductions in grain yield. During 50% flowering to milk stage, Tmax and Tmin above 24.6 oC and 11.6 oC, respectively, reduced grain yield below 4000 kg ha-1; significant reduction in grain yield was also noted beyond maximum temperature of 26.9 oC. During flowering to milk and flowering to maturity phases, Tmax and Tmin exhibited highly significant negative correlation with grain yield, indicating higher temperatures causing lower grain yield. With delayed sowing, sensitive phases of the crop experienced higher air temperatures which led to reduction in grain yield. An increase of Tmax from 29.2 to 32.1 oC during flowering to maturity phases reduced the wheat productivity drastically in this region of Indo-Gangetic plains. Grain yield declined by 399 kg ha-1 per 1 oC rise in Tmax during 50% flowering to maturity stage. Considering grain yield vis-à-vis temperature regimes during flowering to maturity stage, the most important recommendation for the farmers of the region would be to finish wheat sowing before 25 November in order to enable them to escape terminal heat stress in wheat and thereby realizing higher grain yield. In this study, mass balance for Chorabari glacier of the Central Himalaya, India has been estimated. This glacier has been considered for the case study as it feeds the Mandakini River and was one of the reasons for flash floods in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand in 2013. The observations are based on glacier area/length change and rate of melting in the multidecade (1976-2016) using Landsat data. The study estimates an overall decrease in area at 0.8% per year. Elevation change has been studied using geodetic method utilizing shuttle radar topography mission and TanDEM-X datasets, which have shown a decrease in elevation in 16 years (2000-16). From these remotely observed parameters, a negative mass balance for the decade 2000-11 indicates glacier retreat. This study highlights the applicability of optical and radar remote sensing for the Himalayan glaciers, for better disaster management and understanding glacier dynamics in response to climate change. The popularity of the index funds as an investment option has increased manifolds ever since they were introduced. This is primarily because of the merits that the investor enjoys through passive style of funds management. This includes the low cost involved in managing such funds and the significant tax savings. Most of the researchers have compared the performance of the actively managed funds with that of index funds. However the index funds of US and for that reason other parts of the world are different from that of India. Unlike other countries in India the benchmark indices comprise of very less number of securities and thus are unable to represent the entire economy. So in Indian context comparison of performance of actively managed funds with index funds is not logical. Therefore this paper attempts to make an intra-class performance evaluation of some Indian index funds based on some statistics. The study includes the use of graphical interpretations coupled with statistical tools like R-square and tracking error values. Two models of tracking error have been employed to test empirically the performance of the selected index funds. The study is useful for those interested in mutual funds, which includes researchers, academicians, and financial advisors. With the introduction of Mutual funds in India in 1963, the Indian investor has shown positive response to mutual fund investments which is evidenced through increasing AUM (Assets Under Management) every quarter. So far as management style is concerned the industry offers two options to the common investor- on one hand the passively managed funds with the sole objective of replicating their benchmark index and on the other the actively managed funds where the fund manager continuously puts his efforts to enhance the returns, by making frequent changes in the composition of the portfolio. The common investor with limited savings cannot be expected to hold too many funds in his portfolio. Further with limited exposure to financial concepts and complexities he is left guessing on the right combination of funds that should constitute his small portfolio. This paper is a sincere attempt to address the above mentioned situation. We have empirically tested and shown that given the restricted savings which combination, either only two passively managed funds, two actively managed funds or a portfolio comprising of one of each type will win the race for the investor. The article presents a study which discusses issues on the use of technology in Indian English classroom. It is pointed out that technology in teaching of English accelerates and enriches the basic skills, relates the academic exercises to the real time job requirements and increases the economic viability of prospective workers. It is concluded that the professional development of teachers should be given emphasis in the classroom and technology is like a complimentary teaching aid only.

Glacier velocity is one of the important parameters to know about glacier dynamics, its mass and health. Understanding glacier velocity also assists in the analysis of ice thickness, ice flux and mass balance. Furthermore, basin/sub-basin wise studies are helpful to understand the climate change over that region instead of monitoring individual glaciers. In the current study, the spatial distribution of glacier velocity is generated for the entire Chandra and Bhaga sub-basins, in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India, using Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2/Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (ALOS-2/PALSAR-2) differential interferometry pair images with a 14-days temporal gap. The glaciers in Chandra sub-basin are found to have a high flow rate as compared to the glaciers in Bhaga sub-basin. Local slope and ice thickness, which decrease towards the terminus in general, control the movement of valley glaciers, and lower movement rate is observed for most of glaciers towards the terminus/frontal area. However, a few glaciers of Bhaga sub-basin demonstrate an accelerated movement in their frontal areas. This irregular behaviour is also studied in this work and it is discovered that terrain slope and influx of melting water from adjacent glaciers are the major causes for such behaviour of these glaciers. They are, therefore, prone to accelerated mass loss compared to other glaciers in the sub-basin. Another key finding of the anomalous glacier dynamics study is the disintegrating behaviour of glaciers, which is also identified by interpreting the responses of physical scattering mechanisms retrieved from glaciers using fully polarimetric ALOS-2/PALSAR-2. Warming temperatures are expected to cause glacier retreat and separation of tributary glaciers from the main glacier body. Melt water from tributary glaciers can further accelerate glacier flow and ice melt in lower part of glacier trunk. This can lead to formation of dead ice zones and disintegration of Himalayan glaciers, which are supported by numerous tributary glaciers. Managed forests, dynamic with activities of harvest and afforestation, have become an area of imminent research opportunity to understand the effects of these disturbances and regrowth dynamics. As low frequency polarized radar signals have the ability to penetrate forest canopies, the fully polarized Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data gives an ideal representation of conditions in the forest. However, this valuable information has not been optimally utilized in understanding the forest disturbances and regrowth dynamics. Several forest change monitoring studies have been performed using single or dual polarization SAR data, whereas limited studies utilized full polarimetric information. In this study, L-band ALOS/PALSAR and ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 fully polarimetric data is used to study and understand the behavioural dynamics of homogeneous and heterogeneous forest compartments having single and multiple species composition, respectively. Radar scattering pattern of different species, and its variation with respect to phenology, disturbances, harvesting and plantation regrowth are analysed to understand the trend in scattering components with respect to above said forest changes. Based on the scattering properties and their analyses, a two stage rule based classifier has been developed to categorize the forest based on its disturbance and regrowth status into disturbed, re-growth, stable/no change and non forest classes. The classifier performed with, considerably, high accuracy having an overall accuracy of 85.39% and a kappa coefficient of 0.8. The classifier developed in this work presents the potential of fully polarimetric data in understanding the level and extent of disturbances and regrowth dynamics of a forest. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter is the coherent combination of the scattering from multiple individual scatterers within the radar resolution cell, which results into a 2-D radar image. Tomographic SAR (TomoSAR) takes advantage of multiple SAR acquisitions to provide 3-D vertical structure of the imaged target. Over forests, parameters such as canopy structure, canopy density, leaf area and phenology contribute to different SAR scattering mechanisms along the vertical dimension of the trees. Tomography has been demonstrated in various earlier works for forest bio-physical parameter estimation using airborne data. In this research work, multi-polarimetric space-borne TanDEM-X tomograms are examined for the first time over a multi-species Indian tropical forest. Multiple TanDEM-X acquisitions are focused using Capon beamforming at five polarimetric channels — HH, HV, VV, HH − VV and HH + VV. Four distinct forest species compartments are selected representing different canopy structure and density. The tomograms obtained in different polarizations for these species are analyzed in detail to understand the scattering patterns across different forest species. Field surveys carried out in several forest locations provide in situ observations of forest height and vertical structure. It was observed that canopy gaps and leaf density play a crucial role for X-band SAR signal penetration through ground. For dense canopy species the backscatter contributions are spread through the canopy, while in case of sparse canopy species, the ground scattering is dominant. Vertical profiles obtained at surveyed plot locations are plotted in all polarizations, and provide a good agreement with field observations. Further, the obtained TomoSAR backscatter layers have a good correlation with field measured above-ground biomass (AGB). A state-wise assessment of methane (CH4) budget for Indian paddies, based on a decadal measurement data across India is presented for the calendar year (CY) 1994, the base year for India’s Initial National Communication (NATCOM) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), along with national trend from CY 1979 to 2006. The NATCOM CH4 emission factors (EFs) for Indian paddy cultivation areas, generally having less than 0.7% of soil organic carbon (SOC), have been estimated as 17.48±4gm−2 for irrigated continuously flooded (IR-CF), 6.95±1.86gm−2 for rain-fed drought prone (RF-DP), 19±6gm−2 for rain-fed flood prone (RF-FP) and deep-water (DW), 6.62±1.89gm−2 for irrigated intermittently flooded single aeration (IR-IF-SA) and 2.01±1.49gm−2 for IR-IF multiple aeration (MA) paddy water regimes. The state-wise study for 1994 has indicated national CH4 budget estimate of 4.09±1.19 Tgy−1 and the trend from 1979 to 2006 was in the range of 3.62±1 to 4.09±1.19 Tgy−1. Four higher emitting or “hot spot” states (West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh) have accounted for 53.9% of total CH4 emission with RF-FP paddy water regime as the major contributor. CH4 emissions were enhanced by factors such as SOC (∼1.5 times due to increase in SOC by ∼1.8 times), paddy cultivars (∼1.5 times), age of seedlings (∼1.4 times), and seasons (∼1.8 times in Kharif or monsoon than in Rabi or winter season). The seasonal snow cover contributes significantly to the water resource in the Indian Himalayas, and snow density is one of the vital parameters in the determination of the hydrological potential of snow. The application of conventional methods for snow density retrieval using fully polarimetric SAR data is constrained by the properties of snow primarily due to the melt and frost cycles, as compared to fresh dry snow. The surface component of backscatter is significant in case of melt and frost. In the conventional decomposition based methods, the surface component is not considered for the inversion of permittivity, as proposed in this study. In this paper, we also propose a methodology for the estimation of snow density using bi-temporal fully polarimetric C-band RADARSAT-2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. We utilize the relation between the differential modified Mueller matrix components, the attenuation constants, and the Fresnel transmission coefficients. The permittivity of snow is derived using the inversion of the Fresnel transmission coefficients which is used to determine the snow density using a state of the art empirical relation. The snow density estimates from the proposed method are compared with other methods based on coherency matrix decomposition and evaluated against in-situ measurements collected during a field campaign carried out in Dhundi in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. Chemical leukoderma, or chemical-based vitiligo, is a dermal disease triggered by exposure to chemicals and characterized by the emergence of depigmentation or hypopigmentation of the skin. The etiology of this condition is associated with exposure to various chemical substances present in both occupational and non-occupational settings. The precise mechanism that underlies chemical leukoderma remains elusive and is believed to result from the demise of melanocytes, which are responsible for producing skin pigments. This condition has gained particular prominence in developing countries like India. An interesting connection between chemical leukoderma and vitiligo has been identified; studies suggest that exposure to many household chemicals, which are derivatives of phenols and catechol, may serve as a primary etiological factor for the condition. Similar to autoimmune diseases, its pathogenesis involves contributions from both genetic and environmental factors. Identifying hitherto unknown palaeo-channels, especially in the arid regions of the Thar Desert, is crucial since these channels may form excellent aquifers, and are also associated with valuable ore deposits of many precious minerals. This study employed integrated C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) of Sentinel-1A and high-resolution multispectral Sentinel-2A data of pre- and post-monsoon seasons (June and November) to delineate playas and palaeo-channels. This approach is the first of its kind for this area. The palaeo-channels were delineated through a detailed visual inspection of colour composite (CC) images of Sentinel-2A data, SAR backscatter (VH) images and fused SAR and optical images. Then, we studied the topographic profiles generated from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission - Digital Elevation Model (SRTM-DEM) across the identified palaeo-channels, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) to further confirm the existence of a palaeo-channel's course and playas. As a result, several playas and palaeo-channels in the area were successfully identified, some of which were previously unmapped and undetected. The results indicate that the post-monsoon datasets are more useful for the precise delineation of palaeo-channels due to the presence of relatively higher moisture along the palaeo-channels' courses., (© 2022.
