Precise as well as unbiased estimates of genetic parameters of economically important traits is important for framing breeding programmes meant for genetic progress of dairy animals. Present work was carried out to assess the co-variances along with genetic parameters of production and reproduction traits in Sahiwal cattle with Bayesian approach. Records of Sahiwal cattle kept at ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana for the period 1988-2016 were used. Heritability estimates ± posterior standard deviation for 305 days' milk yield (305DMY), lactation milk yield (LMY), lactation length (LL), peak yield (PY), days to attain peak yield (DPY), dry period (DP), gestation period (GP), calving to first insemination interval (CFI), days open (DO) and calving interval (CI) as obtained were 0.23 ± 0.03, 0.26 ± 0.03, 0.18 ± 0.03, 0.18 ± 0.03, 0.07 ± 0.02, 0.08 ± 0.02, 0.08 ± 0.02, 0.07 ± 0.02, 0.09 ± 0.02 and 0.02 ± 0.02, respectively and estimates of repeatability for the corresponding traits were 0.23 ± 0.03, 0.26 ± 0.03, 0.21 ± 0.03, 0.21 ± 0.03, 0.12 ± 0.02, 0.14 ± 0.03, 0.16 ± 0.03, 0.16 ± 0.03, 0.17 ± 0.03 and 0.17 ± 0.03. Moderate heritability values for 305DMY and LMY implies that sufficient additive genetic variability is available to obtain selection response. Repeatability estimates for 305DMY, LMY and PY were moderate, pointing towards the possibility of early appraisal of Sahiwal cattle for selection. Antagonistic genetic associations were observed between reproduction and production traits suggesting that reproduction traits need due attention while selecting high producing Sahiwal animals., (© 2024. Identification of promising genotypes in sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids) breeding is achieved by multi-stage evaluation initiated by evaluation of thousands of seedlings derived from true seed and then vegetatively propagated. Family selection for cane yield in ground nursery is done through weighing cane yield / plot, which is laborious and expensive. In recent times, various statistical tools have been applied for overcoming the constraints in family selection at single stool stage. A population of 1,800 seedlings derived from fifteen bi-parental crosses involving Indian Co canes and Erianthus introgressed hybrids were evaluated in seedling stage. A subset comprised of 450 clones selected from the single stool stage was evaluated in the firs clonal trial. Random Coefficient Model (RCM)was employed to predict the promising families contributing a greater number of high yielding clones using the cane yield data recorded in the early stages of selection viz., single stool and first clonal crop stages. The hybrids of the five elite parental combinations viz., Co 86011 x CoT 8201, Co 8371 x Co 86011, Co 86002 x CoC 671, Co 62198 x Co 8353 and GU04(28) E02 self x Co 0314 identified through RCM analysis showed an improvement of 41.86 % higher cane yield than the clones in the average families (Co 85002 x Co 8209, CoM 0265 x Co 0314, Co 8371 x Co 94008, Co 11015 x Co 775 andGU04 (50) RE6 x Co 94008). The positive slope values estimated by the RCM method for the superior crosses highly correlated with the proportion of elite cane yielding clones in the plant crop trial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study aims to evaluate genetic and non-genetic factors influencing semen production potential of Gir bulls. Materials and Methods: Data on semen quantity (n=6911) and quality (n=466) available from January 2011 to December 2018 at BAIF’s frozen semen station, Jind, Haryana, India, were utilized for the study. Factors, namely, season of collection, age at collection, and bull (random effect) were studied for their effect on quantitative and qualitative semen traits. Least square means for the traits were obtained using a general linear model. The effect of age within bull for repeatable traits was analyzed using a longitudinal model with age as the control variable. Multivariate analysis using mixed repeatability model equation was utilized to estimate bull effect correlation (genetic + permanent environmental correlation), phenotypic correlations, and repeatability. Results: The overall least square means of ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, total sperms, initial and post-thaw motility, hypo-osmotic swelling test, and acrosome integrity of frozen semen were 6.62±0.03 ml, 1.22±0.01 109/ml, 8.09±0.05 109/ml ejaculate, 75.78±0.001%, 55.92±0.0001%, 55.13±0.005%, and 71.08±0.001%, respectively. The season of the collection showed a significant effect on volume, concentration, total sperm, and initial motility. The performance of bulls was superior in summer season, followed by winter and monsoon. Increase in semen attributes during summer season was due to the effect of lower temperature on sensitive stages of spermatogenesis. Age at collection had a significant effect on all semen traits. Volume and total sperm count showed increasing trend while concentration showed a decreasing trend with an increase in age. Motility and quality traits did not show any particular pattern. Individual bulls showed differences in all the semen performance traits with age. The repeatability of the traits ranged from 0.04 (HOST) to 0.58 (acrosome integrity). Bull effect correlation ranged from −0.73 (initial motility and acrosome integrity) to 0.93 (HOST and acrosome integrity). Conclusion: Individual bulls showed variation in traits measured over age. Rust caused by Uromyces viciae-fabae is a major biotic constraint to field pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivation worldwide. Deployment of host-pathogen interaction and resistant phenotype is a modest strategy for controlling this intricate disease. However, resistance against this pathogen is partial and influenced by environmental factors. Therefore, the magnitude of environmental and genotype-by-environment interaction was assessed to understand the dynamism of resistance and identification of durable resistant genotypes, as well as ideal testing locations for rust screening through multi-location and multi-year evaluation. Initial screening was conducted with 250 diverse genotypes at rust hot spots. A panel of 23 promising field pea genotypes extracted from initial evaluation was further assessed under inoculated conditions for rust disease for two consecutive years at six locations in India. Integration of GGE biplot analysis and multiple comparisons tests detected a higher proportion of variation in rust reaction due to environment (56.94%) as an interactive factor followed by genotype × environment interaction (35.02%), which justified the requisite of multi-year, and multi-location testing. Environmental component for disease reaction and dominance of cross over interaction (COI) were asserted by the inconsistent and non-repeatable genotypic response. The present study effectively allocated the testing locations into various categories considering their "repeatability" and "desirability index" over the years along with "discrimination power" and "representativeness." "Mega environment" identification helped in restructuring the ecological zonation and location of specific breeding. Detection of non-redundant testing locations would expedite optimal resource utilization in future. The computation of the confidence limit (CL) at 95% level through bootstrapping strengthened the accuracy of the GGE biplot and legitimated the precision of genotypes recommendation. Genotype, IPF-2014-16, KPMR-936 and IPF-2014-13 identified as "ideal" genotypes, which can be recommended for release and exploited in a resistance breeding program for the region confronting field pea rust. Purpose: To determine repeatability and agreement of the ARK-30 handheld autorefractor with retinoscopy under cycloplegic and noncycloplegic conditions in children.Methods: Three consecutive autorefractor measurements (with and without cycloplegia) and retinoscopy were performed and compared in 30 randomized eyes of 30 children (mean age of 6.7 ± 2.7 years with spherical equivalent [SE] refraction from ‒4.01 to +7.38 D) in a cross-section and masked study. Bland-Altman analysis of autorefractor measurements (with and without cycloplegia) and agreement with retinoscopy were calculated with conventional notation (sphere [Sph] and cylinder [Cyl]) and vector notation (SE, J0, and J45coefficients).Results: ARK-30 measurements without cycloplegia were lower than under cycloplegic conditions (Sph: ‒0.52 ± 2.37 D vs + 0.86 ± 2.60 D, P < 0.01; Cyl: ‒0.83 ± 0.80 D versus ‒0.78 ± 0.77 D, P = 0.37; and SE: ‒0.94 ± 2.19 D vs + 0.47 ± 2.44 D, P < 0.01, respectively) and statistically different (P < 0.03) from retinoscopy (Shp: +0.83 ± 2.66 D; Cyl: ‒0.71 ± 0.87 D; SE: +0.51 ± 2.49 D). Without statistical differences were in J0and J45coefficients. Cyloplegic autorefraction measures were not found to be statistically significantly different to retinoscopy measures. ARK-30 under cycloplegia shows better repeatability with lower limits of agreement (LoA) in Sph (LoA: ‒0.66 to +0.69 D), and SE (LoA: ‒0.66 to +0.65 D) than without cycloplegia (LoA: ‒1.45 to +1.77 D, and ‒1.38 to +1.74 D, respectively).Conclusion: Under noncycloplegic conditions, ARK-30 autorefractor has low repeatability and a tendency toward minus over correction in children. However, repeatability and agreement with retinoscopy under cycloplegic conditions allow use of ARK-30 in children to estimate refraction but not to substitute gold standard retinoscopic refraction. Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) studies for subsurface characterization in Central Ganga Basin of India, where thick cover of alluvium absorbs most of the vibrations generated by a sledgehammer source, give low quality seismic data at large offsets and generally provide imaging depth lesser than 30 m due to low quality of dispersion curves at lower frequencies. Therefore, a novel seismic energy source is designed and developed to produce large amplitude surface waves even at longer offsets and for deeper depths of imaging using dispersion analysis of surface waves. The developed source for seismic data acquisition is low-cost, repeatable, portable, and easy to operate with no environmental impact. Unlike the sledgehammer source where the quality of surface waves generated also depends on the person hitting the metal plate, the seismic data quality from the novel weight-drop source is independent of the operator. The developed source is an impact type where a free-falling mass accelerated due to gravitational pull hits onto a base plate coupled with the earth generating vibrations in the ground. The performance of the source was evaluated in a field trial. A receiver array of 24-channel cabled geophones with 3 m spacing was planted on the ground. Seismic data were acquired using the source at 5 m negative offset inline from the first geophone. Seismic data were also recorded with the sledgehammer as a source for comparison. Five shot gathers for each source were acquired with the same acquisition geometry and source position. Shot gathers were analyzed and compared using trace attributes, 1D and 2D Fourier spectra, signal-to-noise ratio, relative energy, and dispersion images. The study shows that the developed source produces low frequency high amplitude signal and better dispersion image, notably in the lower frequency range, in comparison with the sledgehammer source. Therefore, the developed source is adapted to investigate deeper subsurface velocity structure with dispersion curve from high amplitude surface wave analysis. Moreover, the repeatability study suggests that the repeat shot gathers acquired from the developed source have remarkably high degree of similarity. Therefore, seismic data acquisition with the developed source does not require repeat shots for vertical stacking as often done in case of a hammer source. Sound pressure level measurement indicates that the developed source has no adverse environmental impact on the operator. Aims: Gujarati is the main spoken language of a large proportion of the population of India. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a new Minimum Angle of Resolution (logMAR) visual acuity chart in the Gujarati language. Materials and Methods: A new Gujarati visual acuity chart was designed to logMAR specifications using Gujarati optotypes experimentally selected to have similar relative letter legibility under spherical and cylindrical defocus. The chart validation study was carried out using 153 adult subjects in a large clinical setting in India. Subjects who were literate in English and Gujarati participated in the study. Visual acuity was measured with the new Gujarati logMAR chart and a modified Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study-(m-ETDRS) logMAR chart. The method of presentation was randomized between the charts. Repeat visual acuity was measured on a subsequent day with a second version of the Gujarati logMAR chart. Results: The Gujarati chart correlated highly with the m-ETDRS logMAR chart (r² = 0.974). The mean visual acuity difference (Gujarati - m-ETDRS logMAR) was equal to three letters (-0.06 logMAR). The Gujarati logMAR chart also proved to be highly repeatable (r² = 0.994, test-retest) with 95% CI of ± 0.04 logMAR. Conclusions: The new Gujarati logMAR visual acuity chart provides a valid and repeatable tool for the measurement of visual acuity in native Gujarati language speakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semen data comprising of 97,023 ejaculates of 197 bulls from 6 buffalo breeds were analyzed. The traits considered were as follows: ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, mass activity, initial and post-thaw motility, total sperm, and total motile sperm before and after thawing as well as a composite trait equal to the theoretical number of doses which can be produced from each given ejaculate. The objective was to measure the semen production potential of indigenous buffalo bulls and identify factors affecting these traits. A linear mixed model was used, including a random bull effect along with other fixed factors: the order of the ejaculate on a particular day, the interval between collections, the time of collection, the breed, the age at collection, the semen collector, and the year and month of collection. The study showed breed wise variation for all traits. The first ejaculate of a bull on a particular day was superior to the second for nearly all the traits. Longer collection intervals are better than shorter intervals for all the parameters, although short collection interval of 2 to 4 days produced higher yield in terms of total semen doses without hampering semen quality. The study also showed a slight decrease of semen quality with time of collection within a day. The Murrah breed showed comparatively consistent performance during their whole life compared with the other breeds. Repeatability estimates for semen traits were found to be low (0.09 for mass activity) to relatively large (> 0.4 for volume and concentration). A negative correlation was found between bull effects for semen volume and concentration while a high positive correlation was found between mass activity, initial motility, and post-thaw motility. Results of the study will help in suggesting suitable management and breeding plans for semen production traits.
