The present study reveals the first documented distribution record of Desmodema polystictum (Ogilby, 1898) from the Andaman coast, eastern Indian Ocean. The species is rare in nature and the knowledge regarding the taxonomy, ecology and distribution is still limited. Only few records have been come from the Indian Ocean. The study is based on a single specimen (34 cm total length) collected from the northeastern region of Andaman Islands, India. The present record of D. polystictum from Andaman waters provides greater latitude and depth distribution than previously acknowledged from the Indian Exclusive Economic zone. Along with the comparative morphometric and meristic data from previous reports, description of present specimen as well as distributional information are also provided and discussed. Six-hourly soundings (GPS sonde) were carried out at the central equatorial Indian Ocean (80º-83ºE) during 25th September-10th October 2011 under the CINDY2011 (Cooperative Indian Ocean Experiment on Intra-seasonal variability in Year 2011) field campaign. One-degree interval soundings were also taken along a meridional section at 83ºE from 5ºN to 5ºS during 12-20 October 2011 to supplement the time series data. Relative humidity (RH) and meridional wind component exhibit downward propagation of air mass in bands of high and low RH associated with northerly and southerly winds, respectively. Low (20-100 day) and high (2-10 day) frequency band pass filtered OLR data (NOAA-interpolated OLR) revealed the presence of Madden and Julian Oscillation (MJO) with 20- to 40-day periodicity, and weak Mixed Rossby Gravity (MRG) waves with 4- to 5-day periodicity. Eastward (westward) propagating MJO (MRG wave) with wave numbers 3-4 (4-5), amplitudes of anomaly 1.1-1.2 Wm (1.8 Wm) were observed. The asymmetric bifurcation of warm surface water by the subsurface cold water off Sumatra generate asymmetric convective regimes in the vicinity of the equator probably triggered convection with periodicity similar to MRG waves. The intermittent surface convection associated is believed to be responsible for the ascending moisture to the middle troposphere prior to the initiation of MJO. The moisture pumped to the middle troposphere makes the layer convectively more unstable leading to the state of deep convection, a situation conducive for the MJO initiation processes. The three-dimensional distribution of various cloud types over the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) region using five years (2006-2010) of CloudSat observations during June-July-August-September months is discussed for the first time. As the radiative properties, latent heat released and microphysical properties of clouds differ largely depending on the cloud type, it becomes important to know what types of clouds occur over which region. In this regard, the present analysis establishes the three-dimensional distribution of frequency of occurrence of stratus (St), stratocumulus (Sc), nimbostratus (Ns), cumulus (Cu), altocumulus (Ac), altostratus (As), cirrus (Ci) and deep convective (DC) clouds over the ISM region. The results show that the various cloud types preferentially occur over some regions of the ISM, which are consistent during all the years of observations. It is found that the DC clouds frequently occur over northeast of Bay of Bengal (BoB), Ci clouds over a wide region of south BoB-Indian peninsula-equatorial Indian Ocean, and Sc clouds over the north Arabian Sea. Ac clouds preferentially occur over land, and a large amount of As clouds are found over BoB. The occurrence of both St and Ns clouds over the study region is much lower than all other cloud types.The interannual variability of all these clouds including their vertical distribution is discussed. It is envisaged that the present study opens up possibilities to quantify the feedback of individual cloud type in the maintenance of the ISM through radiative forcing and latent heat release. Precise specification of the vertical distribution of cloud optical properties is important to reduce the uncertainty in quantifying the radiative impacts of clouds. The new global observations of vertical profiles of clouds from the CloudSat mission provide opportunities to describe cloud structures and to improve parameterization of clouds in the weather and climate prediction models. In this study, four years (2007-2010) of observations of vertical structure of clouds from the CloudSat cloud profiling radar have been used to document the mean vertical structure of clouds associated with the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and its intra-seasonal variability. Active and break monsoon spells associated with the intra-seasonal variability of ISM have been identified by an objective criterion. For the present analysis, we considered CloudSat derived column integrated cloud liquid and ice water, and vertically profiles of cloud liquid and ice water content. Over the South Asian monsoon region, deep convective clouds with large vertical extent (up to 14 km) and large values of cloud water and ice content are observed over the north Bay of Bengal. Deep clouds with large ice water content are also observed over north Arabian Sea and adjoining northwest India, along the west coast of India and the south equatorial Indian Ocean. The active monsoon spells are characterized by enhanced deep convection over the Bay of Bengal, west coast of India and northeast Arabian Sea and suppressed convection over the equatorial Indian Ocean. Over the Bay of Bengal, cloud liquid water content and ice water content is enhanced by ~90 and ~200 % respectively during the active spells. An interesting feature associated with the active spell is the vertical tilting structure of positive CLWC and CIWC anomalies over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which suggests a pre-conditioning process for the northward propagation of the boreal summer intra-seasonal variability. It is also observed that during the break spells, clouds are not completely suppressed over central India. Instead, clouds with smaller vertical extent (3-5 km) are observed due to the presence of a heat low type of circulation. Abstract: Comprehensive investigations during the last decade have clearly established that aerosols have a significant impact on the climate. This paper reports the results of the spatial variations in aerosol optical depth (AOD) and fine mode fraction (FMF) characteristics as a function of latitude and longitude over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and the Northern Indian Ocean (NIO) during ICARB-W cruise period of 27th December 2008–30th January 2009 from onboard Sunphotometer and MODIS (Terra, Aqua) satellite measurements. Very high AOD500 (0.7–0.8) occurred over the north head BoB adjacent to the northeastern Indian coast and the lowest AOD500 (0.1–0.2) occurred in central BoB far away from the coasts, and in a small area in the northeastern part close to Myanmar coast as well as over NIO. The highest values (as high as 1.2) of Ångström exponent, α occurring over northeast BoB (regions close to Bangladesh and Myanmar) indicate relative abundance of accumulation mode particles and very low values of α (below 0.7) over central part of BoB as well as southern BoB/NIO suggesting dominance of coarse-mode sea spray aerosols. Terra/Aqua MODIS AOD550 and cruise measured AOD500 using Sunphotometer showed good agreement (R 2 =0.92) over the BoB. The total mass concentrations over BoB during cruise period were remarkably high, with a mean value of 28.4±5.7μgm−3. Aerosol FMF was higher than 0.7 over the BoB, while FMF over NIO was about 0.5. NCEP reanalysis data on winds at 850hPa, along with 5-days airmass back trajectories via HYSPLIT model, suggested transport of continental aerosols from the central and northern India over the BoB by the strong westerly/northwesterly winds. Regionally averaged clear sky aerosol (net) forcing over BoB during the winter is −28.9Wm−2 at the surface and −10.4Wm−2 at the top of the atmosphere whereas, the ARF values estimated over NIO at TOA, surface and in the atmosphere are −6.4, −18.3 and +11.9Wm−2, respectively. Performance of seven fully coupled models in simulating Indian summer monsoon climatology as well as the inter-annual variability was assessed using multi member 1 month lead hindcasts made by several European climate groups as part of the program called Development of a European multi-model ensemble system for seasonal-to-inter-annual prediction (DEMETER). Dependency of the model simulated Indian summer monsoon rainfall and global sea surface temperatures on model formulation and initial conditions have been studied in detail using the nine ensemble member simulations of the seven different coupled ocean-atmosphere models participated in the DEMETER program. It was found that the skills of the monsoon predictions in these hindcasts are generally positive though they are very modest. Model simulations of India summer monsoon rainfall for the earlier period (1959-1979) are closer to the 'perfect model' (attainable) score but, large differences are observed between 'actual' skill and 'perfect model' skill in the recent period (1980-2001). Spread among the ensemble members are found to be large in simulations of India summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) and Indian ocean dipole mode (IODM), indicating strong dependency of model simulated Indian summer monsoon on initial conditions. Multi-model ensemble performs better than the individual models in simulating ENSO indices, but does not perform better than the individual models in simulating ISMR and IODM. Decreased skill of multi-model ensemble over the region indicates amplification of errors due to existence of similar errors in the individual models. It appears that large biases in predicted SSTs over Indian Ocean region and the not so perfect ENSO-monsoon (IODM-monsoon) tele-connections are some of the possible reasons for such lower than expected skills in the recent period. The low skill of multi-model ensemble, large spread among the ensemble members of individual models and the not so perfect monsoon tele-connection with global SSTs points towards the importance of improving individual models for better simulation of the Indian monsoon. Kappaphycus alvarezii was cultivated at three places, viz. Mithapur, Okha and Beyt Dwarka on the Northwest coast of India. The biomass and growth rates were measured at 15-day intervals up to 45 days and varied differently for different growth periods at these places. Thus, at 15, 30 and 45 days, the biomass (fresh wt) varied from 182.0±19.96 to 435.0±23.66 g, from 366.0±118.09 to 1096.0±61.43 g and from 530.5±50.95 to 1537.0±43.54 g, respectively, with respective daily growth rates (%) from 3.95±0.78 to 9.80±0.63, from 3.64±0.01 to 13.98±3.07 and from 3.69±0.23 to 6.07±0.06. The seawater temperature, salinity, nitrate and phosphate ranged from 19.3 to 26.9 °C, from 30.81 to 36.83‰, from 11.60 to 19.75 μmol L−1 and from 2.37 to 5.0 μmol L−1 respectively. The growth rate between the culture months was significantly different at Okha at P<0.01. Further, it was significantly correlated to salinity at Mithapur while at Okha and Beyt Dwarka, the same was significantly correlated to nitrate and seawater temperature. The interannual variability of North-West India Winter Precipitation (NWIWP) has been examined in association with the variability of sea surface temperature (SST), surface air temperature (SAT) and upper tropospheric (200 hPa) wind patterns over India and the surrounding regions. We have considered data for a period of 54 years (1950–2003). During the years of excess NWIWP, the SST was above normal over the equatorial Indian Ocean, SAT was below normal over east Mediterranean Sea and over the Himalayan region and upper tropospheric westerlies strengthen and shift southwards. Upper tropospheric westerlies over north and central India was found to be related with the SST anomalies over the equatorial Indian Ocean. The decrease of SAT over north India and surroundings may largely be a manifestation of cooling brought about by excessive precipitation and sweep of cold air advection in rear of the storms. The intensifying of upper troposphere westerlies embedded with a jet increases the upper level divergence over north India due to increased horizontal shear resulting in intense anticyclone at upper troposphere. The objective of the study was to estimate longshore current and sediment transport from measured wave data and from the observations on the littoral environment. A directional wave rider buoy was deployed at 12m water depth, 11 km off Kannirajapuram. Wave data at 3 hourly intervals from March 1997 to February 1998 were recorded. The first wave direction corresponding to the peak of the spectrum and second wave direction corresponding to the secondary peak were estimated since wave spectrum at this location was mainly double peak spectrum. Dailyobservations on surf zone width and longshore currents were carried out at Kannirajapuram beach during March 1997 to February 1998. The longshore currents and sediment transport were estimated considering first and second breaker angles and resultant was estimated considering the ratio of the first and second spectral energy peaks. Comparisonof measured and computed longshore current shows that currents can be reasonably well estimated based on Galvin's equation and sediment transport based on Walton's equation. Abstract: Surface water mixing in the Bay of Bengal (BOB) inferred from spatio-temporal distribution of δ18O and salinity based on synthesis of 194 new samples together with published data is reported. In general, both δ18O and salinity have low values in northern part of the BOB, progressively increasing towards SW. The lowest values are observed during July–September (southwest monsoon season) and the highest in pre-monsoon. The most prominent δ18O–salinity relationship is seen for samples collected during June to October when the Himalayan river influx dominates. When this influx decreases in other seasons the δ18O–salinity relationship is poor. The δ18O–δD regression of samples north of 10°N is similar to the GMWL. However, for samples south of ~10°N, this regression has a significantly lower slope. This is interpreted as due to absence of direct riverine inflow in this region of the BOB, coupled with –ve (P−E; Precipitation minus Evaporation) almost throughout the year. This study shows that the seasonal distribution of δ18O and salinity over the northern BOB is dominantly governed by the variation in the (P+R−|E|) in spite of the fact that ocean currents transfer several times more water between the two basins of northern Indian Ocean. Abstract: Oceanographic surveys were carried out in the southeastern Arabian Sea in two phases during 14–17 May and 23–27 May 2000 to study the evolution of the Arabian Sea mini warm pool. The hydrographic data collected during these experiments, satellite imagery of sea surface temperature for the corresponding period and ship drift data were utilized for this purpose. Both satellite and in situ observations indicated the presence of a mini warm pool up to 14 May and its dissipation thereafter. The Arabian Sea mini warm pool region was characterized by low-salinity Bay of Bengal water (<22 sigma-t). This watermass was advected into the southeastern Arabian Sea by the East India Coastal Current mainly during November–January and recirculated in this region in an anticyclonic eddy. Immediately after the dissipation of the mini warm pool, this watermass could not be traced in this region. Simulation of mini warm pool characteristics using the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) agreed well with in situ and satellite observations. Moreover, the model showed strengthening of southerly currents in the warm pool region during its dissipation period, which caused the disappearance of the Bay of Bengal watermass. Specific experiments with the POM revealed the significance of heat flux components, low wind speed and salinity stratification in the formation and sustenance of the mini warm pool. The current study focused on the monitoring of pollution loads in the Kalpakkam coastal zone of India in terms of physico-chemical characteristics of sediment. The investigation took place at 12 sampling points around the Kalpakkam coastal zone for one year beginning from 2019. The seasonal change of nutrients in the sediment, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, total organic carbon, and particles size distribution, was calculated. Throughout the study period, the pH (7.55 to 8.99), EC (0.99 to 4.98 dS/m), nitrogen (21.74 to 58.12 kg/ha), phosphorus (7.5 to 12.9 kg/ha), potassium (218 to 399 kg/ha), total organic carbon (0.11 to 0.88%), and particle size cumulative percent of sediments (from 9.01 to 9.39%) was observed. A number of multivariate statistical techniques were used to examine the changes in sediment quality. The population means were substantially different according to the three-way ANOVA test at the 0.05 level. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis showed a substantial association with all indicators throughout all seasons, implying contamination from both natural and anthropogenic causes. Marine sponges form symbiotic relationships with complex microbial communities, yet little is known about the mechanisms by which these microbes regulate their behavior through gene expression. Many bacterial communities regulate gene expression using chemical signaling termed quorum sensing. While a few previous studies have shown presence of N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-based quorum sensing in marine sponges, the chemical identity of AHL signals has been published for only two sponge species. In this study, we screened for AHLs in extracts from 15 sponge species (109 specimens in total) from the Mediterranean and Red Sea, using a wide-range AHL biosensor. This is the first time that AHL presence was examined over time in sponges. We detected the presence of AHL in 46% of the sponge species and found that AHL signals differ for certain sponge species in time and across sponge individuals. Furthermore, for the Mediterranean sponge species Sarcotragus fasciculatus, we identified 14 different AHLs. The constant presence of specific AHL molecules in all specimens, together with varying signaling molecules between the different specimens, makes Sa. fasciculatus a good model to further investigate the function of quorum sensing in sponge-associated bacteria. This study extends the knowledge of AHL-based quorum sensing in marine sponges.

Sponges harbor a remarkable diversity of microbial symbionts in which signal molecules can accumulate and enable cell-cell communication, such as quorum sensing (QS). Bacteria capable of QS were isolated from marine sponges; however, an extremely small fraction of the sponge microbiome is amenable to cultivation. We took advantage of community genome assembly and binning to investigate the uncultured majority of sponge symbionts. We identified a complete N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-QS system (designated TswIR) and seven partial luxI homologues in the microbiome of Theonella swinhoei. The TswIR system was novel and shown to be associated with an alphaproteobacterium of the order Rhodobacterales, here termed Rhodobacterales bacterium TS309. The tswI gene, when expressed in Escherichia coli, produced three AHLs, two of which were also identified in a T. swinhoei sponge extract. The taxonomic affiliation of the 16S rRNA of Rhodobacterales bacterium TS309 to a sponge-coral specific clade, its enrichment in sponge versus seawater and marine sediment samples, and the presence of sponge-specific features, such as ankyrin-like domains and tetratricopeptide repeats, indicate a likely symbiotic nature of this bacterium., (Copyright © 2016, American Society for Microbiology.
