Hydrocarbon is one of the primary organic pollutants that contaminate seawater. Most hydrocarbons which pollute the sea waters of Indonesia are the constituents of diesel fuel. This condition emphasizes the need to develop a bioremediation strategy for diesel fuel pollution in the country. A successful plan for bioremediation is primarily determined by the choice of the bacterial agent, which can be isolated from the polluted seawater. Furthermore, the setup must consider the characteristics and capability of the bacterial isolates to degrade diesel fuel. This study thus aimed to analyze the potential of Bacillus cereus isolated from the polluted seawater of Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, as a bioremediation agent. The results of bacterial density, pH measurements, TPH and GC-MS assays indicated that the locally isolated Bacillus cereus could significantly reduce the hydrocarbon concentrations. More importantly, after 14 days of bioremediation, the polluting diesel fuel was categorized as biodegradable based on the BOD:COD ratio. The issue of plastic pollution in the marine environment is a matter of great concern. Our research presents pioneering findings on sub-surface microplastics in the Indonesian archipelagic waters. Data on microplastic presence in sub-surface water in the Indonesian Archipelagic Water is crucial for expanding our understanding of microplastic distribution from the surface to the bottom layers of the ocean, a research area that has been relatively overlooked. We discovered microplastic particles at 5 m depth below the surface through simultaneous pump method. The highest concentration of microplastics was discovered in Ambon, followed by North Java and North Sulawesi. In contrast, the lowest abundance of microplastics was detected in the Maluku Sea. These findings are consistent with prior studies establishing a relationship between human activity-as indicated by population density-and microplastic pollution. However, our results indicate that levels of microplastics in Ambon were significantly higher than those found in other sampled areas, particularly compared to North Java, which boasts the highest population density in Indonesia. This disparity is likely due to a faster seawater flushing rate and shorter water residence time in North Java relative to Ambon. The origins and pathways through which these microplastics are introduced into Indonesian archipelagic waters remain uncertain. Based on particle composition (52.73% fibers and 51.38% size <500 µm), it appears that they may result from either larger plastic items being broken down during transportation over long distances by prevailing currents from input from coastal areas or as a byproduct of local activities. Additional research is necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of microplastic in water columns. This includes investigating the fate of microplastics and examining their impact on marine organisms within this treasured ecosystem. Indonesia is one of the largest contributors to global marine litter deposition, given its high population and the largest archipelagic country. The increasing problem of plastic littering has recently attracted the attention of researchers. This study aims to identify marine and macroplastic litter in Semarang City. A field survey was conducted by dividing the beach into 18 sampling grids, each with an area of 1 × 1 m2. A literature survey was also conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology to identify literature that can be used to develop recommendations. The results showed that 6.26-11.16 grams/m2/day of marine litter and approximately 1.61-4.89 items/m2/day of plastic litter would be deposited on Semarang City beaches. The greatest contributors to macroplastic litter were polypropylene (PP) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which should be considered for further intervention. Strategic recommendations were developed based on an in-depth literature survey and best practices in the current field. These also include recommendations that can be used as a reference by policymakers and other stakeholders to reduce marine pollution. Aquaculture is still in early development in Madagascar and Tanzania, while in Indonesia, aquaculture has a long history. In Madagascar, villagers are farming seaweed and sea cucumbers, as part of small-scale community-based aquaculture (CBA). They followed a contractual model between a private farming company and farmers. Local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and public institutions in Madagascar jointly strive to reverse the trend of ongoing anthropogenic coastal degradation. In Tanzania, the cultivation of red seaweeds has been established for over 30 years, with declining production attributed to climate change. While shrimp farming still involves, to some extent, clearing of mangroves in Tanzania, seaweed culture has only mild impact on coastal ecosystems. Farming areas provide shelter and habitat for juvenile fish, crabs and other organisms. Therefore, NGOs ask for support to improve culture methods. Various problems and shortcomings in Indonesia have been clearly identified, including issues related to new aquaculture areas, pollutants, emerging diseases, insufficient broodstock and fry supply, as well as a lack of technology and manpower. To address these challenges and ensure the growth of aquaculture production, the government has implemented national policies and established training and broodstock centers throughout the country. In Madagascar, the CBA programme stands out as a success story and can serve as a template for other coastal regions and countries. In Tanzania, the adoption of CBA model for co-culture could be the future. Due to rapid urban development in the coastal area of the East Aceh Regency, water quality degradation and marine pollution issues become the primary concern in this region. Moreover, seasonal observation of water quality and phytoplankton has yet to be assessed. This study aimed to determine the control of seasonal water quality and nutrients over phytoplankton abundance throughout the East Aceh coast. Direct field measurements and laboratory analyses were performed to collect the primary data, whereby the sampling period was conducted during the displacement toward the ebb tide. We assessed the water quality parameters using a modified CWQI (coastal water quality index). Furthermore, linear regression and principal component analysis were performed as the basis of statistical analyses. The phytoplankton abundance was higher in April than in September, with most Bacillariophyceae and Dinophyceae in all observed stations. Except for DO and turbidity, the assessed water quality parameters (temperature, TDS, conductivity, salinity, sulfide, and TOM) are feasible for marine biota. Of particular concern, the East Aceh coast is characterized by poor-good water quality, with the CWQI value ranging from 40 to 90. Based on the regression and PCA analyses, N and P nutrients significantly control the phytoplankton abundance like a "seesaw" between April and September, with a respective coefficient determination of about 50%. Because of the tremendously high phosphate observed in April, the water condition tended to be P-limited and vice versa for September. On the other hand, instead of evoking the phytoplankton growth, each water quality parameter has a specific influence in characterizing phytoplankton communities in the study area. The Jakarta Bay is the estuary for thirteen rivers that flow through densely populated and industrialized upstream regions. This condition has the potential to pollute the Jakarta Bay with microplastics that are transported from the upstream river. Meanwhile, people, particularly fishermen, continue to use Jakarta Bay for fishing and aquaculture. This study examined microplastics (MP) abundance in the whole tissues of green mussels (Perna viridis) grown in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia, and their health risks. MP was identified in all 120 green mussels, with fiber > film > fragment being the most common kinds. The abundance of fiber was 19 items/g of tissue, whereas the abundances of fragments and film were 14.5 items/g and 15 item/g, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy tests on MP from the tissues of green mussels showed that there were 12 different types of MP polymers. The estimated amount of MP that humans consume each year varied from 29,120 MP items/year to 218,400 MP items/year for different age groups. Based on the total mean number of MP found in the tissues of green mussels and the amount of shellfish consumed per person in Indonesia, it was estimated that people ate 775,180 MP through shellfish each year. This study reports on plastiglomerate and other new forms of plastic pollution in the tropical marine continent of Indonesia. Twenty-five samples were collected from an island beach in the Java Sea where plastiglomerate, plasticrusts, and pyroplastic were formed by the uncontrolled burning of plastic waste. The most common plastic types were polyethylene and polypropylene (PE/PP), as shown by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. However, acrylates/polyurethane/varnish (PU) and a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile were found as well. This suggests that plastiglomerates can form from a wider variety of plastic polymers than previously reported. FTIR analysis also indicates thermo-oxidative weathering, making the charred plastic more brittle and susceptible to microplastic formation. A subset of the samples was analyzed for associated chemical contaminants. One plastiglomerate with a PU matrix showed high concentrations of phthalates. All samples had high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), likely due to the burning of the plastic in open fires. The burning leads to a change in the physical and chemical properties of the plastics contained in the plastiglomerates. Plastiglomerate and plastic waste of similar origin are therefore often more weathered and contaminated with organic pollutants than their parent polymers. The highest PAH concentration was found in a plastitar sample. Plastitar is defined as an agglomerate of tar and plastics that adheres to coastal rocks. In contrast, our study documents a more mobile, clastic plastitar type. This clastic plastitar could pose an additional ecological risk because of its mobility. Southeast Asia is the world's most polluted area in terms of marine plastics. The Mekong River is one of the largest rivers in the area, and ranked as somewhere between the 8th- and 11th-biggest contributor to plastics in the world's oceans. Here, we investigate how microplastics drift from the Mekong river to Southeast Asia, and which coastlines are most exposed. We identify potential factors (wind drift, rivers, vertical mixing and sinking rates) that affect plastic drift in the region using the OpenDrift model with realistic wind and ocean currents for simulations between three months (summer and winter) and 15 months. We find that the seasonal drift is influenced by the monsoon systems and that most of the plastics strand in the Philippines and Indonesia. In addition, the role of wind drift is significant in strong winds. Vertical mixing and sinking rates are unknowns that affect the relative importance of wind drift (near the surface) and ocean currents. Simulations with different terminal velocities show that, unsurprisingly, the higher the terminal velocities are, the closer they deposit to the source. In light of the large uncertainties in sinking rates, we find that the plastic distribution has large uncertainties, but is clearly seasonal and influenced by wind, vertical mixing, river discharge and sinking rates. The Philippines and Indonesia are found to have the coastlines that are most exposed to plastic pollution from the Mekong river. This study shows that simulations of marine plastic drift are very variable, depending on many factors and assumptions. Marine plastic pollution (MPP) is one of the major global environmental threats in the Anthropocene era that requires a coordinated legal response from local to international levels. This article explores how the Indonesian legal and institutional framework deals with MPP. Despite the diversity of existing instruments, Indonesia has not adopted all the necessary measures to prevent, reduce and control MPP from land and marine sources. Although progress at the national level to date has been relatively slow, some local authorities have recently taken the initiative to establish single-use plastics regulations, which offer promising prospects for MPP treatment in the future. Indonesia can only change its status as the second largest MPP contributor after China through a special law targeting plastic waste based on the life cycle of plastics and supported by consistent implementation. Plastic debris has become an acute marine pollution concern worldwide in modern times. Indonesia is particularly impacted because of its high population density, heavy rainfall rate and numerous coastlines. A Lagrangian analysis was performed to simulate the fate of fictive marine debris drifting along surface currents, including tides and Stokes drift. The fictive particles were released according to the discharge rate of 21 Indonesian rivers and advected over 4 years. Most of the particles were stranded along Indonesian coasts (60%), before 6 months had elapsed (84%) and within a range of 1000 km (76%). The time variability exhibited two seasonal peaks, one centered on January-February and one on June-July, consistent with in situ observations. However, the results underline the complexity of performing direct comparisons between in situ observations and numerical simulations for stranded waste due to limited measurements and the heterogeneity of field methods and protocols. Countries, like Indonesia, without advanced waste management systems and with higher levels of population and consumption growth, face particular challenges in addressing plastic waste and marine pollution. To address and prevent plastic marine pollution, Indonesia introduced mitigation initiatives, such as Extended Producer Responsibility, waste banks, and take back schemes. While recent research shows such approaches are able to prevent marine litter, research into their social and equity effects is scarce. This is problematic, because mitigation initiatives can have in- and exclusion effects in terms of access to valuable waste for vulnerable, informal waste actors. This article combines the sociology of network and flows with a network power typology to study how the implementation of waste banks in Klaten Municipality, Indonesia not only led to reduction in plastic pollution, but also the exclusion of cartmen, waste pickers and mobile intermediates from waste networks and thus from accessing these valuable waste flows. A waste bank is a community based business that provides households with additional income and turns household waste into economically valuable materials by trading them with recyclers. In doing so they outcompete a vulnerable group like waste pickers. Instead of waste pickers, households become part of the plastic waste networks. In addition to assessing environmental effects of (marine) plastic pollution mitigation initiatives, more scholarly attention should go towards assessing the in- and exclusion dynamics around different plastic mitigation initiatives. Pamekasan coastal area is the center of salt production concentrated in the Pademawu subdistrict with the ponds area of 740.96 ha. The sufficiently close distance of salt ponds to settlement areas allows several issues, such as shallow groundwater salinization. This study aimed to determine the salt pond's degradation over five years (2015-2020) and its influence on the salinization issue in Pademawu. We compare groundwater quality parameters (conductivity, TDS, the depth of shallow surface groundwater, and salinity) surveyed in 2015 and 2020, correlated to salt pond area alterations. Over five years of measurement, it was found that conductivity declined, reaching 2779.94 µS/cm. Based on TDS deterioration, groundwater transformed from brackish to freshwater in 2020. By contrast, the depth of shallow groundwater-surface increased by almost one meter. The freshwater area also increased by 22% over five years based on conductivity classification. Groundwater quality dynamics are related to the alteration of the salt pond area. On the other hand, the significant increase in rainfall intensity, which is not beneficial for salt agriculture, results in the salt pond area deterioration, thereby declining surface groundwater salinity in Pademawu due to the less interaction between Cl and groundwater within aquifers. Although the groundwater pollution induced by seawater intrusion and salinization declined in 2020, re-organizing the distance between salt ponds and the settlement area in Pademawu is crucial to minimize further groundwater pollution. This paper presents the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Indonesian seas from April to October 2020. Data were mainly obtained through literature studies focusing on coastal and ecosystem services, noise observation in the ocean, a nd in-situ data for atmospheric conditions. The results of this study found that the pandemic has given the oceans and ecosystems time to recover from anthropogenic stresses even though the tourism and fisheries sectors have experienced strong economic shocks. Trace metals are one of the most serious pollutants in tropical seagrass meadows given their persistence and toxicity. Whereas quantity is frequently measured, there is no information on the spatial extent of metal pollution in these systems. Here, we use an island in Indonesia (Barang Lompo) as a model system to study the impact radius of two major and eight trace metals in sediment and seagrass leaves. We provide evidence for exponential decay in both the metal pollution index and concentrations of most metals with increasing distance from the island (k = -0.01 to -0.08 m -1 ). Consequently, there is an impact radius of approximately 100 m around the island. The comparative analysis of both seagrass species further revealed interspecific differences in metal loads. Dynamic processes in the coastal waters play an important role in regulating the marine pollution distribution caused by riverine inputs and are relevant for coastal management. Here, the coastal water properties were investigated from field measurements and modeling hydrodynamic processes in the northeastern coast of Sumatra. The present study found that the river discharges affect a low salinity of 28–29 psu in the surface waters along near the coastal line. The river discharge might influence by strong La Niña with high rainfall in December 2010. However, the authors suggested that the effect of tidal mixing is stronger than the freshwater discharges, resulting in vertically well-mixed coastal waters in the region. The observed tidal range of 200 cm indicates a strong tidal mixing in the waters. The tidal elevation contributes more than 70% of the total measured sea elevation. The tidal current signal in which the flow pattern simulations show no significant differences among tide and wind-tide driven currents, is also dominant (77%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tourism is a significant socioeconomic activity in a coastal country such as Indonesia. However, it degrades the ecosystem quality when the increasing litter pollution is poorly managed in the marine tourism area. The purpose of this research was to assess the impact of tourism on the litter pollution on the Padar Island, Komodo National Park, Indonesia, specifically on the hiking track. According to the performed investigation, plastic litter was discovered dominant on the Padar Island (131 of 146 items). It was found that filter cigarette butts (49 items, 33.56%), candy wrapper (18 items, 12.33%), wet tissue/wet wipes (17 items, 11.64%) and outsole from shoe/sandals (13 items, 8.90%), dominated the litter collected. Smoking activity, food and beverage consumption, and hiking activity are all examples of activities that may result in litter from visitors in this national park area. Tourism impacts the litter pollution in the Padar Island hiking trail. The presence of Hg, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Zn in clam (Meretrix lyrata) from the East Java Coast (EJC), Indonesia, is reported in this study. Metal levels in clam whole tissues were Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > Cd > Hg. Cr, Cd, and Pb levels in clam tissue surpassed the tolerated limit for eating and the provisional acceptable weekly intake (PTWI) at numerous places along the EJC. The target hazard quotients (THQs) for Cr, Cd, and Pb were greater than one in several locations, indicating that these metals could be harmful to consumers (particularly non-carcinogenic impacts). Eating clams from this area may be detrimental to human health. Furthermore, target cancer risk (TCR) values for Cr and Cd were greater than 10−4 in several locations, implying that Cr and Cd could cause cancer in people over the course of a lifetime of exposure. A comprehensive study was undertaken to examine the contamination of spotted scat fish (Scatophagus argus) with microplastics (MP) in various locations along the East Java coast of Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to collect detailed information regarding the abundance, color, shape, size, type of polymer, and chemical components of the MP. The findings of this study indicated that MP exhibiting distinct attributes—including a specific fiber type, black coloration, and a size range of 1000– <5000 μm—was most abundant in the gill, stomach, and intestines of spotted scat fish of varying lengths. And MP with a size range of 100–<500 μm was prevalent in the sediment. MP with black fragments measuring less than 100 μm in diameter were found primarily in seawater. A positive correlation was identified between fish length and MP abundance in the intestines, as indicated by the Spearman correlation coefficient. Conversely, a negative correlation was detected between fish length and MP abundance in the gills. The findings of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses, which indicate the presence of various polymers and chemical substances including plasticizers (e.g., diethyl phthalate, decane, and eicosane), stabilizers (2-piperidinone, hexadecanoic acid, mesitylene, and 2,4-Di- tert -butylphenol), and flame retardant (cyclododecene), in fish, are of the utmost importance. These substances have the potential to endanger the health of both animals and humans if they are ingested through the food chain. The massive industrial growth in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia has the potential to result in metal contamination in the nearby coastal waters. The purpose of this study was to analyze the metal concentrations in edible species from the Gresik coastal waters and evaluate the potential health risks linked to this metal contamination. Metal concentrations (Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, As, Cd, Ni, Hg, and Cr) in fish and shrimp samples mostly met the maximum limits established by national and international regulatory organizations. The concentrations of As in Scatophagus argus exceed both the permissible limit established by Indonesia and the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). The As concentration in Arius bilineatus is equal to the PTWI. The target cancer risk (TCR) values for both As and Cr in all analyzed species exceed the threshold of 0.0001, suggesting that these two metals possess the potential to provide a cancer risk to humans. Illegal fishing is a widespread, global phenomenon that is affecting already heavily depleted wild fish stocks, threatening marine habitats and contributing to marine pollution through discarded fishing gear. Many different measures have been implemented by nation states to deter and prevent illegal fishing. These include coastal surveillance and policing, policies and regulation, and education. In this paper, we examine the case of Australia through an analysis of regulative arrangements, policies and guidelines that form the governance framework to better understand the changing seascape of illegal fishing. We argue that joint efforts with neighbouring states such as Indonesia and regional fisheries management authorities have contributed to a decrease in illegal fishing in and around the Australian EEZ. Finally, we discuss current and future challenges, opportunities, recent advancements and technological approaches for reducing illegal fishing around the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The complex circulation for both atmospheric and ocean affects the pathways of floating marine debris (MD). The aim of this research was to define the MD trajectories in the Indonesian boundary seas. The Lagrangian particle method was applied with oceanographic factors and debris classes based on 1 to 3% windage class. The simulation was applied during the Northwest and Southeast Monsoon period. On the basis of the obtained findings, the debris trajectory patterns were indicated to vary in the two monsoons. In the northern part of Indonesia, all neighbouring countries were affected, especially those near the boundaries. In the southern part of Indonesia, most of the debris headed west towards the Indian Ocean. MD was mostly transported by the ocean currents and monsoonal wind and ended up in the coastal area. Some debris was also still floating in the open ocean after three months. This study concluded that marine litter not only polluted Indonesia water, but also the neighbouring countries. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The classification of marine animals as protected species makes data and information on them to be very important. Therefore, this led to the need to retrieve and understand the data on the event counts for stranded marine animals based on location emergence, number of individuals, behavior, and threats to their presence. Whales are generally often stranded in very shallow areas with sloping sea floors and sand. Data were collected in this study on the incidence of stranded marine animals in 20 provinces of Indonesia from 2015 to 2019 with the focus on animals such as Balaenopteridae, Delphinidae, Lamnidae, Physeteridae, and Rhincodontidae. METHODS: Multivariate latent generalized linear model was used to compare several distributions to analyze the diversity of event counts. Two optimization models including Laplace and Variational approximations were also applied. FINDINGS: The best theta parameter in the latent multivariate latent generalized linear latent variable model was found in the Akaike Information Criterion, Akaike Information Criterion Corrected and Bayesian Information Criterion values, and the information obtained was used to create a spatial cluster. Moreover, there was a comprehensive discussion on ocean-atmosphere interaction and the reasons the animals were stranded. CONCLUSION:The changes in marine ecosystems due to climate change, pollution, overexploitation, changes in sea use, and the existence of invasive alien species deserve serious attention. The eastern coastline of Gresik, located in East Java, Indonesia, experienced significant industrialization, leading to the development of numerous diverse sectors. These diverse industrial activities, in addition to other human activities, result in the contamination of sediment across the eastern coast of Gresik with a variety of metals. Metals like arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) have exceeded the international standards for sediment quality, potentially causing significant harm to the aquatic ecosystem in this coastal region. The results of the multivariate analysis indicate that the metals found in the sediment are related to a combination of anthropogenic inputs, specifically those originating from industrial effluents in the area under study. The crisis facing the world's oceans from plastics is well documented, yet there is little knowledge of the perspectives, experiences and options of the coastal communities facing overwhelming quantities of plastics on their beaches and in their fishing waters. In emerging economies such as those in the Coral Triangle, the communities affected are among the poorest of their countries. To understand the consequences of ocean plastic pollution in coastal regions, through the eyes of local people, this study examines the knowledge, use, disposal and local consequences of single use plastics in remote island communities in two archipelagos of southern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using mixed methods—a survey of plastic literacy and behaviour, household interviews about purchasing and disposal, and focus group discussions to generate shared mental models—we identify a complex set of factors contributing to extensive plastic leakage into the marine environment. The rising standard of living has allowed people in low resource, remote communities to buy more single-use plastic items than they could before. Meanwhile complex geography and minimal collection services make waste management a difficult issue, and leave the communities themselves to shoulder the impacts of the ocean plastic crisis. Although plastic literacy is low, there is little the coastal communities can do unless presented with better choice architecture both on the supply side and in disposal options. Our results suggest that for such coastal communities improved waste disposal is urgent. Responsible supply chains and non-plastic alternatives are needed. Producers and manufacturers can no longer focus only on low-cost packaged products, without taking responsibility for the outcomes. Without access to biodegradable, environmentally friendly products, and a circular plastic system, coastal communities and surrounding marine ecosystems will continue to be inundated in plastic waste. This research departs from Indonesia's policy and practice on the submarine tailings disposal system, in which there is a legal vacuum in Indonesia legal system. However, Indonesia is part of UNCLOS 1982, which obliged to conform their rules with the regulation in the convention, especially on the protection of the marine environment. This research aims are to examine the current Indonesia's policy and compare it with American and Canadian policies. To visualize the above objective, this research applies normative-empiric legal research, which emphasizes its analysis of primary and secondary legal materials. All collected legal materials are classified, categorized, analyzed and constructed as well as developed through analytical prescriptive elaboration. The utilization of the marine area as a medium of submarine tailing disposal system could be categorized as a landbased source of marine pollution. As one of the biggest archipelago states in the world, Indonesia should have a strict regulation on submarine tailings disposal to prevent the past failure of the system in Buyat Bay, North Sulawesi. This study evaluated microplastic (MP) abundances and physico-chemical characteristics in sediments and Anadara granosa along the East Java coast and their health implications. Fibers (74 %) dominated sediment MPs at south coast, while fragments (49-61 %) dominated north coast. Fiber (43-52 %) is the predominant MP in cockle tissues in all locations. Most MP in sediments (31-47 %) and cockle tissues (41-49 %) is black. The majority of microplastics (100-1500 μm) are found in sediment (73-90 %), and cockles (77-79 %). Very weak correlations found between the amount of MP and the length of the cockle shell. However, Spearman correlation shows that as the amount of MP in sediment increases, so does the amount of MP in cockle tissue. Each year, individuals of varying ages consume an average of 20,800 to 156,000 MP items. Marine plastic litter has become an emerging pollution issue in Indonesia. In this review, we examined policies related to plastic litter and their impact on reducing plastic litter in Indonesian seas and analyzed the progress in marine plastic research to contribute to the policy. Then, synthesized gaps to improve policy and possible scientific contributions to reduce marine plastic pollution. Our review showed that Indonesia's policy on reducing marine plastic litter pollution was largely focused on land-based sources, lack of sea-based leakage, and limited community behavior change in plastic use. Most research was done in the central region of Indonesia where a hotspot of marine plastic pollution occurred, and understudied in western and eastern regions. The national policy to reduce 70% of marine plastic litter entering the Indonesian seas by 2025 requires an extended period. The active role of local governments, improvement of solid waste management information system, and establishment of a marine plastic research agenda are among the most crucial for achieving national targets. This study examined the characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in the gills and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) captured in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. All 120 fish contained MPs, with fragment > fiber > film being the most prevalent types, in that order. The total abundances of fragments, fibers, and films in the gills were as follows: 4.8 ± 1.6, 1.0 ± 0.7, and 0.3 ± 0.3, respectively. The total abundances of fragments, fibers, and films in the GIT were 5.9 ± 2.3, 1.3 ± 0.8, and 0.4 ± 0.4, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that the abundance of fragments, fibers and films in both the gills and GIT of mackerel did not differ significantly between sampling locations. In the gills and GIT, MPs with sizes less than 0.1 mm and MPs that were black in color were most prevalent. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy tests on MPs from the tissues of mackerel showed that there were 8 different types of MP polymers, namely, latex, nylon, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), cellulose acetate (CA), polyurethane (PU), polycarbonate (PC), polystyrene (PS), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Vast quantities of debris are beaching at remote islands in the western Indian Ocean. We carry out marine dispersal simulations incorporating currents, waves, winds, beaching, and sinking, for both terrestrial and marine sources of debris, to predict where this debris comes from. Our results show that most terrestrial debris beaching at these remote western Indian Ocean islands drifts from Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka. Debris associated with fisheries and shipping also poses a major risk. Debris accumulation at Seychelles is likely seasonal, peaking during February–April. This pattern is driven by monsoonal winds and may be amplified during positive Indian Ocean Dipole and El-Niño events. Our results underline the vulnerability of small island states to marine plastic pollution, and are a crucial step towards improved management of the issue. Background: The Indonesian government faces a dilemma of promoting fish consumption for its health benefits and to ease food insecurity, while at the same time seeking effective approaches to reduce the high levels of marine pollution. However, the factors associated with fish consumption in the face of persistent high levels of marine pollution are not well elucidated in the literature. Objectives: This was an explorative study to investigate the sociodemographic factors related to fish consumption and to understand the perspectives of expert informants on marine pollution and its impact on fish quality and availability in Indonesia. Methods: We characterized fish consumption among respondents aged 15 years and older in the fifth wave of the Indonesian Family Life Survey ( n = 31,032), based on their sociodemographic profiles, and developed multinomial regression models to assess the relationship between respondents' sociodemographic profiles and quintiles of fish consumption. We also conducted in-depth interviews on fish consumption and marine pollution with key informants from Indonesia ( n = 27). We then used a convergent mixed-methods design to synthesize the results of both datasets. Results: Fish was the most frequently consumed animal-source food reported by survey respondents: 2.8 (±2.6) days/week. More younger respondents (15-19 years) reported relatively lower consumption of fish (9.3% in Q1 versus 5.9% in Q5) compared to respondents 50 years and older (37% in Q1 versus 39.9% in Q5; p < 0.01). When classified by region, more respondents from the Java region reported lower consumption of fish (86.5% in Q1 versus 53% in Q5; p < 0.01). Key-informants' perspectives corroborated the survey results by indicating that the younger generation tends not to want to consume fish; informants expanded the survey results by suggesting that fish is scarce in the Java region due to high levels of marine pollution. Informants further implied that there is low awareness about the impact of marine pollution on fish quality among most of the Indonesian population. Conclusion: Evidence from both data sources converge on differential preference for fish consumption by age group. Informants' perspectives also link marine pollution to fish scarcity, which poses a threat to food security among low-income Indonesians and to human health globally. More studies are needed to corroborate our findings and inform policy guidelines to reduce marine pollution while promoting fish consumption in Indonesia.

Jakarta Bay in Indonesia and its offshore island chain, the Thousand Islands, are facing extreme pollution. Surfactants and diesel-borne compounds from sewage and bilge water discharges are common pollutants. However, knowledge of their effects on reef fish physiology is scarce. This study investigated combined and single effects of a) the water accommodated fraction of diesel (WAF-D, determined by ƩEPA polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) and b) the surfactant linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) on metabolic performance of the coral reef fish Siganus guttatus . Responses to combinations of each pollutant with elevated temperature (+ 3 °C) were determined. Short-term exposure to WAF-D led to a significant decrease in standard metabolic rates, while LAS led to an increase. During combined exposure, metabolic depression was observed. Effects of pollutants were not amplified by elevated temperature. This study highlights the need to reduce import of these pollutants and to avoid negative long-term effects on fish health. In this study, we analyzed and compared feces of free-living and cultivated fish species, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus under different environmental conditions in Indonesian waters. Metagenome analysis was performed using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the whole metagenomic DNA isolated from fish feces samples. The analysis covered both prokaryotic and eukaryotic DNA. Feces samples from mariculture fish revealed a highly stable distribution of several orders of bacteria when compared to samples from free-living fish, which were highly diverse and dominated by Vibrionales , Pseudomonales , Rhizobiales and non-classifiable Alphaproteobacteria . The eukaryotic content of the samples was dominated by residues of the host and nine additional fish species that formed a portion of the diet. Investigations on functional annotations for predominant bacterial taxa, using Gene Ontology enrichment, revealed a number of functions related to DNA metabolic processes, especially DNA repair, as well as antibiotic response in the free-living fish species. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of environmental impact assessment (EIA) in Indonesia regarding the protection of the marine environment from industrial pollution and identify the important factors for improving the effectiveness of marine EIA. This has been achieved by reviewing secondary literature and providing a synthesis of the ideas used in existing studies of EIA. The paper demonstrates that there are significant issues in the field of EIA in Indonesia particularly in reviewing the failure in protecting the marine environment. A list of important factors for effective marine EIA is presented, allowing practitioners - government officers and stakeholders - to check whether their initiative will contribute to effective marine EIA. Plastic pollution in the ocean primarily originates from the land-derived mismanaged plastic waste that is transported by rivers. This study aimed to estimate the plastic litter generation in the surface water in Jakarta and Indonesia. A field survey was conducted at six riverine sampling points (upstream to downstream) and three holding facilities of the litter in Jakarta during the rainy season. The Jakarta Open Data database was used to estimate the tonnage of plastic litter. By mass, plastic comprised approximately 74 % of the anthropogenic litter in rivers and 87 % in holding facilities. The riverine plastic proportion slightly increased downstream. Approximately 9.9 g/person/day of plastic litter was discharged into Jakarta's surface water during rainy season and recovered by floating booms. To reduce plastic pollution and its severe impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health, further field investigation is necessary to design an effective clean-up system and litter-prevention strategy. Abstract: The increased use of biomass fuel use among rural Indonesian households for years despite national program on subsidized LPG fuel distribution pose threat of indoor air pollution for the householders. Indoor air pollution levels of PM2.5 and CO in the kitchen of 40 households using the fuelwood as the main cooking fuel were measured in the same season in mountainous and coastal areas in Indonesia. The temporal variations of PM2.5 and its size distributions were simultaneously measured using photoelectric UCB monitor and personal cascade impactor, respectively. While carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations were measured using USB-CO monitors. Household indoor air pollution in the mountainous area was generally higher than that in the coastal area. This is because the households in coastal area have higher kitchen volume (about three times), smaller ventilation area (about 1.7 times) and shorter cooking duration with wood fuel (0.6 times) than those in mountainous area. Yet, during cooking with fuelwood, the indoor PM2.5 concentrations at the cook site showed almost comparable results for both sites. The wood stove burning in coastal area tended to be in flaming combustion than in mountainous area. This can be indicated by a higher fraction of finest particles in PM2.5, a higher fraction of EC in PM2.5 and a higher fraction of K+ and Cl− ions in PM2.5 mass concentrations. The time-averaged CO concentrations for 22-h measurements at the mountainous area were higher than those in coastal area. The mountainous area showed higher positive correlation relationship between the measured concentrations of CO and PM2.5 than those in the coastal area. The use of cleaner fuel, e.g., subsidized LPG fuel in rural area should be promoted and managed intensively in mountainous area than in coastal area to avoid people exposure of health damaging indoor air pollutants. Background: Indonesia is undergoing a rapid nutrition transition—a shift in food consumption related to globalization, modernization, urbanization, and economic development—with potentially adverse impacts on diets, health, and the environment. This study sought to understand the perspectives of a multi-disciplinary group of experts on the effects of the nutrition transition on dietary behaviors, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, and the food environment in Indonesia. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted online with 27 Indonesian experts, who are either healthcare providers, nutrition researchers, or environmental researchers. Interview question guides were developed based on a socio-ecological framework. We analyzed the data using deductive and inductive approaches. Results: Experts described a disconnect between awareness about and adherence to healthy diets among Indonesians. They highlighted a marked generational divide in food preferences between the younger population (<40y) and older population (40y+), due to the nutrition transition. Experts perceived that the nutrition transition has also resulted in more eating out, which promotes obesity, through the unhealthy menu offerings from restaurants. Experts also implied that traditional diets are no better than modern diets, due to unhealthy cooking practices, especially frying; suggesting that the combination of higher consumption of fast foods and unhealthy cooking practices may have worsened CVD risk factors in the population. Conclusion: Multi-disciplinary experts indicated that the nutrition transition has negatively impacted diets, health, and food environment in Indonesia. Our findings offer potential hypotheses that can be tested using quantitative approaches, to inform policy and the design of programs to reduce the adverse impacts of the nutrition transition in Indonesia.

Developing transport infrastructure must involve a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis, and accounting for environmental quality changes associated with such an infrastructure is one important aspect that can help complete this problem. In this study, we used difference-in-difference to estimate coastal water quality changes, measured by the Chlorophyll-a concentration, related to port development in Indonesia over the last decade. Using unique MODIS-derived monthly water quality data, we found that the presence of a local small port causes a 1.7% increase in Chlorophyll-a in coastal areas within 6 km of the port. The effects are concentrated in the first two months of operation, and there is also evidence for anticipation effects associated with the construction period. We found a greater effect in Indonesia's eastern regions, which rely on small ports for their local activities. Furthermore, we argue that the effect can be substantial in a larger port, despite posing a limited risk on marine pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blue swimming crab (BSC) Portunus pelagicus from the Bali Strait had the lowest Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Cd and Hg concentrations compared to those from the Java Sea and the Madura Strait. The order of metal concentrations in BSC was Cu > Zn > Cr > Pb > Cd > Hg. The levels of six metals in BSC from all stations were less than the maximum allowable limits. However, Cr levels in BSC from the Java Sea and the Madura Strait exceeded the provisional tolerable weekly intake. All of the hazardous index values reported were greater than one, indicating that consumption of this crab from these locations appears to be hazardous to human health. Furthermore, because the Cr and Cd target cancer risk values were higher than 10−4, people who consume this crab from these locations may develop cancer after a lifespan of consumption. • The sequence of metal accumulation in swimming blue crab (SBC) was Cu > Zn > Cr > Pb > Cd > Hg. • SBC from the Java Sea contained the highest levels of metals, except for Zn. • Because the hazard index values were greater than one, eating this crab posed a risk to human health. • The presence of Cd and Cr in SBC had the potential to be carcinogenic when exposed over a lifetime. The main purpose of the study was to isolate strains of bacteria capable of degrading hydrocarbons from contaminated mangroves and to investigate the ability of the isolated bacteria to degrade total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in a microcosm model of an oily sludge. The potential use of these bacteria strains as environmental clean-up agents was tested by culturing them with six different polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds (phenothiazine, fluorene, fluoranthene, dibenzothiophene, phenanthrene, and pyrene). Six viable and culturable bacteria were isolated, and the 16S rDNA sequence for each was amplified using the primers 9F and 1510R. Sequence results were compared using the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) BLAST program and, combined with phenotypic and phylogenetic data, were used to identify three strains that belonged to theBacillusgenus and were most closely related (98–99%) toBacillus aquimaris,Bacillus megaterium, andBacillus pumilus. The other three strains were closely related (98–100%) toFlexibacteraceae bacterium,Halobacilus trueperi, andRhodobacteraceae bacterium.Two isolates, BA-PZN and BM-PFFP, which were related toBacillus aquimarisandBacillus megaterium, respectively, were further characterized and showed great potential for the removal of more complex hydrocarbon compounds in the oily microcosm model. Indonesian waters are sea lanes of communication for the purposes of seaborne trade, naval movement, and other maritime interests. These waters are of strategic value for maintaining economic security, peace, and stability in the region. Indonesia has the responsibility to address the challenges presented by activities conducted in these waters, such as marine pollution, depletion of marine resources and criminal activities. These challenges are compounded by the fact that there are only a few provisions in the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention which regulate the obligations of ships or user states to share the burden faced by states which possess sea lanes of communication. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the vulnerable condition of Indonesia in light of its obligations to ensure safety of navigation and security.
