We investigate the effects of offshoring on female employment in a developing country as a recipient. We utilise unique data on outsourcing revenues from Indonesia's manufacturing plants. After correcting for offshoring's endogeneity through an instrument variable, we find substantial positive effects on the share of female workers, primarily driven by the increase in female workers without adversely affecting male employment. These positive effects are evident in production occupations but not in non‐production ones. Furthermore, these effects are more pronounced in industries with a sizeable low‐educated workforce, low‐technology sectors or light industries. Finally, we find that international outsourcing, rather than domestic outsourcing, is the key factor for female employment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following on the 2008-2012 OECD Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO) feasibility study of civil engineering, in Japan a mechanical engineering learning outcomes assessment working group was established within the National Institute of Education Research (NIER), which became the Tuning National Center for Japan. The purpose of the project is to develop among engineering faculty members, common understandings of engineering learning outcomes, through the collaborative process of test item development, scoring, and sharing of results. By substantiating abstract level learning outcomes into concrete level learning outcomes that are attainable and assessable, and through measuring and comparing the students' achievement of learning outcomes, it is anticipated that faculty members will be able to draw practical implications for educational improvement at the program and course levels. The development of a mechanical engineering test item bank began with test item development workshops, which led to a series of trial tests, and then to a large scale test implementation in 2016 of 348 first semester master's students in 9 institutions in Japan, using both multiple choice questions designed to measure the mastery of basic and engineering sciences, and a constructive response task designed to measure "how well students can think like an engineer." The same set of test items were translated from Japanese into to English and Indonesian, and used to measure achievement of learning outcomes at Indonesia's Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) on 37 rising fourth year undergraduate students. This paper highlights how learning outcomes assessment can effectively facilitate learning outcomes-based education, by documenting the experience of Japanese and Indonesian mechanical engineering faculty members engaged in the NIER Test Item Bank project.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss group learning in line with economic perspectives of embeddedness and integration emanating from the work of Karl Polanyi. Polanyi's work defines economy as a necessary interaction among human beings for survival; the economy is considered inextricably linked from broader society and social relations rather than autonomous and driven by self-interest in free market conditions. He specifically outlines three key forms of integration that are crucial to economic stability, involving the notions of reciprocity, redistribution, and exchange. These patterns of integration are described as key elements that co-mingle within and structure contemporary group learning within classrooms.

Taraka hamada (Druce, 1875), first discovered on the main island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, is described as a new subspecies, hamakoae, based on the wing pattern and the male genitalia. The postdiscal black spots in the centers of spaces 3 to 4 of the undersurface of the forewing are large. The uncus is fairly swollen dorsally. The phallus is short and cylindrical. We quantified the redox state of magma recorded in volcanic glass particles from an ash-forming eruption at Bromo volcano, Indonesia, to obtain insights into its degassing process. An ash sample was collected by real-time sampling from the ash-forming eruption on 24 March 2011. The ash sample contains juvenile glass particles with a brown-colored, transparent appearance. Detailed observations of texture under a field-emission–electron probe micro analyzer show that the brown glasses lack nanoscale crystals in their groundmass. The compositions of groundmass glass (trachy-andesite) and phenocrysts in the brown glass particles indicate a pre-eruptive magma temperature of 1060 ± 20 °C. The Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of the brown glasses were determined to be 0.15–0.24 using synchrotron-based Fe–K edge micro X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. From the chemical composition, temperature, and Fe3+/ΣFe data, the oxygen fugacity of the magma is estimated to be in the range of 10−10.3 to 10−8.9, yielding a redox state of ΔQFM = 0.57 ± 0.70. The redox state of magma estimated from the brown glasses is more reduced than that of volcanic gas emitted during the open-vent degassing phase (~ 700 °C and ΔQFM of 1.8). The low temperature and oxidized condition of the volcanic gas can be explained by closed-system cooling from 1060 to 700 °C in the gas phase after outgassing, suggesting that the magma head was located deeper during the open-vent degassing phase than during the ash-forming eruption. This paper analyses the issues involved in promoting lesson study in an Indonesian university, based on a case study of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science (FMIPA) of the State University of Yogyakarta. Five points are discussed. First, conducting lesson study with schools revealed that the faculty managers noticed the ignorance about lesson study in FMIPA and decided to conduct lesson study by themselves to learn more. Second, despite using a didactic teaching approach initially, more faculty members began using group work in their lessons. Third, despite the emphasis on the importance of observing students' learning realities, most faculty members focused on teaching methodology. Fourth, in terms of reflection, they could be classified as evaluation-minded in order to be critical about the observed lessons, and learning-minded to appreciate the observed lessons. Fifth, the strong involvement of managers is necessary to develop lesson study as a daily teaching and learning practice.

This paper examines what kinds of impacts a school-university partnership has on schoolteachers and university faculty members, and what types of challenges and tasks exist. The results show the following: (1) joint lesson planning, observation, and reflection, called piloting activities (PA) have succeeded in improving teaching methodologies; (2) faculty members and teachers generally regarded the students under PA as being more participative; (3) it is necessary to ensure linkages between materials and students, as well as between students; and (4) PA resulted in the development of collegiality within schools and between faculty members and teachers.

This paper presents a case study of the experiences under the Indonesian Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Project (IMSTEP) concerning in-service teacher training through the practice of lesson study collaboratively conducted by schools and universities. The purpose of the case study is two-fold: first, to examine the changes in teaching practices through the introduction of lesson study under IMSTEP; and, second, to uncover the challenges faced in implementing lesson study under IMSTEP. The results of the analysis revealed that the lessons underwent three changes: (1) a change in the academic base of the lessons, brought about by close liaison between university faculty members; (2) a change in the structure of the lesson by the introduction of experiments or manual activities and discussions; and (3) a change in the reactions of students during the lesson. However, two insights emerged during the IMSTEP case study as tasks to be addressed in order to further develop the practice of lesson study. First, the participants of the collaborative lesson study were likely to have a narrowed interest in probing the learning processes of the students, in comparison with focusing on teaching methodologies more generally. The limited interests of both the university faculty members and the targeted teachers in the learning processes of students can be shown in the following three ways: the dominance of interests in teaching models, the lack of attention to detail in the learning processes of students and the lack of questioning the reasons for the mistakes and misconceptions of students. Background: In Indonesia, the double burden of child overnutrition and undernutrition is a public health concern. The nationally distributed Maternal and Child Health (MCH) handbook provides child nutrition information to caregivers. We aimed to find mothers' information sources regarding child nutrition, including the internet and the MCH handbook, and to explore the association between overweight and use of the MCH handbook. Method: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among mothers with children under 6 years old in Greater Jakarta during 2019. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression examined the association between child nutrition status and use of the MCH handbook. Results: Data were collected from 233 children. Overweight, underweight, wasting, and stunting were identified in 36.4%, 22.6%, 26.8%, and 37.6%, respectively. 62.5% of mothers used the MCH handbook, and 88.2% used the internet via a mobile phone. Significantly more cases of overweight were observed among children whose mothers used the MCH handbook (adjusted OR [aOR]: 5.829; 95% Confidential Interval [CI]: 1.618–20.999) whereas no relationship was observed between MCH handbook use and child undernutrition. Significant associations with child overweight were found for mother's education (tertiary) (aOR: 0.294; 95%CI: 0.098–0.885), employment type (fulltime) (aOR: 0.185; 95%CI: 0.061–0.562), watching television (more than 1 h) (aOR: 4.387; 95%CI: 1.648–11.678) and recognition of child overweight by mother (yes) (aOR: 3.405; 95%CI: 1.05–11.03). Conclusion: These results indicate the need to support mothers of children exhibiting overnutrition and undernutrition. The MCH handbook should be modified to address this issue. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying is an emerging drying technology that is based primarily on the phenomenon of ionic discharge between two electrodes. The aim of this study was to experimentally investigate the energy efficiency of the EHD drying based on the corona discharge current. Moreover, we aimed to compare the energy efficiency of the EHD drying with that of other available drying technology options under the condition of high humidity, which mimics Indonesia's environment as a potential target for implementation, given that it is of interest to investigate the feasibility of the EHD drying in a real environment. The results show that the dominant parameters of the EHD drying rate are the corona discharge current and the moisture content zones of the target objects. Findings from this study show that the EHD drying technology could be effectively used to replace the conventional drying process in developing countries having high humidity environments and facing energy consumption challenges. Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is a GNSS augmentation system that meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements to support precision approach and landing. GBAS is based on local differential GNSS technique with reference stations located around an airport to provide necessary integrity and accuracy. The performance of the GBAS system can be affected by gradient in the ionospheric delay between aircraft and reference stations. A nominal ionospheric gradient, which is bounded by a conservative error bound, is represented by a parameter σvig. The parameter σvig is commonly determined using station pair to GNSS Continuous Operating Reference Station (CORS) data. The station-pair method is susceptible to doubling of the estimation error of receiver inter-frequency bias (IFB) and is not suitable with the CORS conditions in Indonesia. We propose a satellite-pair method that is found to be more suitable for the CORS network over Indonesia which is centered in Java and Sumatra islands. An overall value of σvig (5.21 mm/km) was obtained using this method along with preliminary results of a comparison of σvig from Java and Sumatra islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prof. Pampang Parikesit, the chairman of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability Science (CESS) at Universitas Padjadjaran Bandung, passed away suddenly on March 11, 2024. CESS is the first institution in Indonesia to focus on inter- and transdisciplinary environmental studies and sustainability sciences. Prof. Parikesit was also one of the founders of the Magister program of Sustainability Science at Universitas Padjadjaran. He organized annual international conferences on sustainability science and was dedicated to involving local communities in seminars and training courses. Prof. Parikesit's contributions to sustainability science in Indonesia and his commitment to mentoring will have a lasting impact on the field. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract A low-cost subsurface irrigation system can generate benefits for small-scale farmers who have scarce water resources. A ring-shaped emitter made from a standard rubber hose has been developed and introduced for subsurface irrigation in Indonesia. It is a low-cost irrigation technology based on indigenous materials and skills. To build a ring-shaped emitter of the original design, a rubber hose is bent into a ring shape with a diameter of about 20 cm, and then five 5-mm holes are drilled into it at even intervals. Next, the entire ring-shaped hose is covered with a permeable textile so that water can infiltrate in all directions around the buried emitter. Water is applied from a water tank connected to the emitter by adjusting the pressure head imposed at the inlet of the emitter. Although it has been successfully used in practice, the performance of the ring-shaped emitter has not been evaluated in detail. Additionally, because the ring-shaped hose is fully covered with the textile, it may be difficult to detect any malfunctions or repair it. To promote the ring-shaped emitter for subsurface irrigation among small-scale farmers in arid or semi-arid regions, it is important to design an emitter that is easy to maintain. This study proposes a reduction in the number of holes and a change of covering method. Because the number of experiments that can be carried out to evaluate the performance of alternative ring-shaped emitters is usually limited, numerical simulations can be performed in addition to experiments. The main objectives of this study thus were 1) to experimentally investigate the water movement around a buried ring-shaped emitter and 2) to numerically evaluate the effect of modifying the design of the ring-shaped emitter on soil water dynamics around the emitter. Numerical simulations were carried out using HYDRUS, one of the most complete packages for simulating variably-saturated water flow in two- or three-dimensional domains. HYDRUS simulations in a fully three-dimensional domain were performed using the soil hydraulic parameters that were optimized against experimental data collected during experiments with the original ring-shaped emitter. Simulation results confirmed that reducing the number of holes does not significantly affect the water availability in silt for model plants, such as tomato and strawberry, and that covering the entire emitter is not necessary. Marine plastic litter has become an emerging pollution issue in Indonesia. In this review, we examined policies related to plastic litter and their impact on reducing plastic litter in Indonesian seas and analyzed the progress in marine plastic research to contribute to the policy. Then, synthesized gaps to improve policy and possible scientific contributions to reduce marine plastic pollution. Our review showed that Indonesia's policy on reducing marine plastic litter pollution was largely focused on land-based sources, lack of sea-based leakage, and limited community behavior change in plastic use. Most research was done in the central region of Indonesia where a hotspot of marine plastic pollution occurred, and understudied in western and eastern regions. The national policy to reduce 70% of marine plastic litter entering the Indonesian seas by 2025 requires an extended period. The active role of local governments, improvement of solid waste management information system, and establishment of a marine plastic research agenda are among the most crucial for achieving national targets. We have developed a near-field tsunami forecast system based on an automatic centroid moment tensor (CMT) estimation using regional broadband seismic observation networks in the regions of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chile. The automatic procedure of the CMT estimation has been implemented to estimate tsunamigenic earthquakes. A tsunami propagation simulation model is used for the forecast and hindcast. A rectangular fault model based on the estimated CMT is employed to represent the initial condition of tsunami height. The forecast system considers uncertainties due to two possible fault planes and two possible scaling laws and thus shows four possible scenarios with these associated uncertainties for each estimated CMT. The system requires approximately 15 min to estimate the CMT after the occurrence of an earthquake and approximately another 15 min to make the tsunami forecast results including the maximum tsunami height and its arrival time at the epicentral region and near-field coasts available. The retrospectively forecasted tsunamis were evaluated by the deep-sea pressure and tide gauge observations, for the past eight tsunamis ( M 7.5-8.6) that occurred throughout the regional seismic networks. The forecasts ranged from half to double the amplitudes of the deep-sea pressure observations and ranged mostly within the same order of magnitude as the maximum heights of the tide gauge observations. It was found that the forecast uncertainties increased for greater earthquakes (e.g., M > 8) because the tsunami source was no longer approximated as a point source for such earthquakes. The forecast results for the coasts nearest to the epicenter should be carefully used because the coasts often experience the highest tsunamis with the shortest arrival time (e.g., <30 min). When peat forest fires happen, it leads to burn soil and also humic acids as a dominant organic matter contained in peat soil as well as the forest. The structure and properties of humic acids vary depending on their origin and environment, therefore the transformation of humic acid is also diverse. The impacts of the peat fires on peat soil from Central Kalimantan, Indonesia were investigated through the characterization of humic acids, extracted from soil in burnt and unburnt sites. The characterization of humic acids was performed by elemental composition, functional groups, molecular weight by HPSEC, pyrolysate compounds by pyrolysis-GC/MS, fluorescence spectrum by 3DEEM spectrofluorometer, and thermogravimetry. The elemental composition of each humic substance indicated that the value of H/C and O/C of humic acids from burnt sites were lower than that from unburnt sites. The molecular weight of humic acids from burnt sites was also lower than that from unburnt sites. Pyrolysate compounds of humic acids from unburnt sites differed from those of humic acids from burnt soil. The heating experiment showed that burning process caused the significant change in the properties of humic acids such as increasing the aromaticity and decreasing the molecular weight. Humic acid (HA), a group of high-molecular weight organic compounds characterized by an ability to bind heavy metals, is normally found in natural water. Although the impairment of vascular endothelial cells in the presence of humic substances has been reported to be involved in some diseases, the mechanisms responsible for this involvement remain unclear. In this study, we examined the cytotoxicity of HA obtained from peatland in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, to human vascular endothelial cells, as well as the mechanisms behind these effects. It was found that 50 mg/L HA showed cytotoxicity, which we considered to be mediated by apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway because of an increase in the expression of caspases 6 and 9 in response to HA administration. In addition, this cytotoxicity was enhanced when cells in this experimental system were exposed to oxidative stress, while it was decreased by the addition of vitamin C. Thus, we conclude that the apoptosis induced by HA depends upon oxidative stress. Furthermore, an iron chelator, DFO, showed a tendency to decrease HA-induced cytotoxicity, suggesting that iron may potentially mediate HA-induced oxidative stress. To determine the water environment and pollutants in West Java, the contents of metals and general water quality of the Ciliwung River in the Jakarta area were measured. High Escherichia coli number (116-149/mL) was detected downstream in the Ciliwung River. In addition to evaluate mercury pollution caused by gold mining, mercury contents of water and sediment samples from the Cikaniki River, and from paddy samples were determined. The water was not badly polluted. However, toxic metals such as mercury were detected at levels close to the baseline environmental standard of Indonesia (0.83-1.07 μg/g of sediments in the Cikaniki River). In Java and Kalimantan in Indonesia, river water plays important roles in human life; for example, for transportation, and economic activities of the inhabitants. However, industrial, agricultural and domestic water is discarded into rivers directly in many developing countries, including Indonesia, since drainage systems have not been completely constructed. In this study, to evaluate the water quality and to compare those levels of environmental contaminants in developing and developed countries, water quality and contents of endocrine disrupters were measured in a total of 64 water samples (Indonesia; 28 samples and Japan; 36 samples) from 53 sites. The results indicated that, rivers in both capital cities, Jakarta and Tokyo, were contaminated. Water in rivers in Indonesia was not so heavily polluted as in Japan. Pollution in the river water in Indonesia appeared to be caused by the lack of sewerage systems. In addition, the findings on endocrine disrupters indicated that the concentration of alkylphenol in water samples was large enough to affect living organisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Asian megacities have severe pollution problems in both coastal and urban areas. In addition, the groundwater potential has decreased and land subsidence has occurred because of intensive groundwater pumping in urban areas. To prevent the adverse effects of urbanization on groundwater quality, it is necessary to confirm the changes in groundwater flow and contaminant transport caused by urbanization. We examined the effects of urbanization on contaminant transport in groundwater. The research areas were located around Bangkok, Thailand, and akarta, Indonesia, cities with populations of approximately 8 and 12 million, respectively. Each metropolitan city is located on a river delta and is adjacent to a bay. We measured the water level and collected water samples at boreholes at multiple depths (100 to 200 m) in 2004 and 2006 in Bangkok and Jakarta, respectively. The current hydraulic potential is below sea level in both cities because of prior excess abstraction of groundwater. As a result, the direction of groundwater flow is now downward in the coastal area. The Cl− concentration and δ18O distributions in groundwater suggest that the decline in hydraulic potential has caused the intrusion of seawater and shallow groundwater into deep groundwater. Concentrations of Mn and NO3−-N in groundwater suggest the intrusion of these contaminants from shallow to deep aquifers with downward groundwater flow and implies an accumulation of contaminants in deep aquifers. Therefore, it is important to recognize the possibility of future contaminant transport with the discharge of deep groundwater into the sea after the recovery of groundwater potential in the coastal areas. In this paper, we lay the initial groundwork for anticipating Indonesia’s future burden of disease by developing a demographic model of population health. We develop this model within the analytic framework of a Markov-based multistate life table model to calculate an important indicator of the burden of disease, the expected years of active life of elderly Indonesians. The magnitude of the gap points to the potential consequences of improvements in the nation’s educational level for the future burden of disease. The results show that having some education increases life expectancy but it also expands the expected years with a major functional problem. Overall educational attainment levels, however, are very low, indicating that Indonesia’s elderly are at the leading edge of improvements in the nation’s social capacity for health. The article cites a study which reports on water environment in the Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. In order to assess as a base-line study of water environment in Kalimantan, researchers assayed water quality of river, lake, channel in Central Kalimantan. The significance of the obtained results were discussed to elucidate the geographical distribution and the background levels of total trace elements in water environmental. This study investigated water quality in total 13 sites in 4 rivers, 2 channels, one lake and one pond in Central Kalimantan to assess as a base-line study of water environment.

: Background and Aims This study aimed at clarifying how the water potential gradient (ΔΨ) is maintained in the shoots of evergreen trees with expanding leaves, whose leaf water potentials at the turgor loss point (Ψtlp) are generally high. : Materials The water relations were examined in current-year expanding (CEX) and 1-year-old (OLD) leaves on the same shoots in temperate (Osaka, Japan) and tropical (Bogor, Indonesia) areas. A temperate evergreen species, Quercus glauca growing in both sites, was compared with a temperate deciduous species, Q. serrata, in Osaka, and two tropical evergreen species, Q. gemelliflora and Q. subsericea, in Bogor. : Key Results (1) In Osaka, the midday leaf water potential (Ψmidday) was slightly higher in OLD (−0·5 MPa) than in CEX leaves (−0·6 MPa), whereas Ψtlp was significantly lower in OLD (−2·9 MPa) than in CEX leaves (−1·0 MPa). In Bogor, Ψmidday was also higher in OLD leaves (−1·0 MPa) despite the low Ψtlp (−1·9 MPa), although stomatal conductance was not always low in OLD leaves. In the branch bearing CEX and OLD leaves, most of the hydraulic resistance (86 %) exists in the current-year branch, leading to differences in water supply between CEX and OLD leaves. The removal of buds just before breaking did not affect the high Ψmidday in OLD leaves after 1 month. Ψmidday in OLD leaves thus appears to be independent of that in CEX leaves. : Conclusions The moderate decrease in Ψmidday in OLD leaves would contribute to maintenance of ΔΨ in the shoots during leaf expansion. Background: The incidence of antimicrobial resistance has been increasing worldwide in the past decades, which includes resistance to bacteria that cause common childhood illnesses, such as acute respiratory infections and diarrhea. Numerous children with those common illnesses are treated with antibiotics. However, in such cases, antibiotic treatment is not required. Community-based studies focusing on antibiotic use among children are still limited. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of antibiotic use for common childhood illnesses and to investigate factors associated with antibiotic use in children under 5 years old as well as female caregivers in a rural community in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 334 children in three villages of Banten Province, located in the western part of Java Island, was conducted in May 2018. Female caregivers who were responsible for providing medications to children were interviewed. We obtained information such as demographic data, any common clinical illness within the last 30 days, and antibiotic usage during an episode of illness. We excluded children with underlying disease that require a regular follow-up and children who were hospitalized in the last 30 days in the analysis. Antibiotic use answered by female caregivers was verified by checking its package or showing photos of various antibiotics to the female caregivers. Crushed antibiotics were confirmed with health professionals. Results: A total of 203 children had clinical symptoms, and the most common symptom was fever and respiratory symptoms. In total, 49.3% received antibiotics, and 66% of them were prescribed by private health professionals. Only two children received antibiotics without a prescription. The most common antibiotic used among children was amoxicillin. Conclusions: The high prevalence of antibiotic use was observed in children under 5 years of age, and the major source to obtain antibiotics was to consult health professionals. Leptospirosis is one of the most prevalent zoonotic diseases caused by pathogenic spirochetes of Leptospira spp. The disease has become a public health concern in urban localities in the tropics, where rats serve as significant reservoir animals for leptospirosis transmission. In Indonesia, the occurrence of leptospirosis is underestimated, and information on the causative Leptospira genotypes and serotypes is limited. This study reports the isolation of Leptospira spp. from rats captured in urban areas of Bogor, Indonesia. Serogroups and genotypes, sequence types (STs), or multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) types using 11 loci, were determined for the isolates. Furthermore, whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on 11 Indonesian isolates and 24 isolates from other Asian countries. Ninety small mammals, including 80 Rattus norvegicus and ten Suncus murinus , were captured and, 25 Leptospira spp. were isolated solely from R. norvegicus (31.3%). The isolates were identified as Leptospira borgpetersenii serogroup Javanica with ST 143 (four strains) and Leptospira interrogans serogroup Bataviae with the same MLVA type as isolates from other Asian countries (19); the serogroup of the two L. interrogans with ST252 could not be identified. The core genome SNP-based phylogenetic tree revealed that Indonesian isolates were genetically related to L. borgpetersenii serogroup Javanica strains widely distributed in Asian countries but formed a different cluster from other strains. The phylogenetic tree of L. interrogans serogroup Bataviae isolates from Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam revealed that isolates were grouped into five clusters based on their geographic locations. This study discovered a high carriage rate of Leptospira spp. among R. norvegicus in Bogor, Indonesia, indicating a potential risk of rat-borne leptospirosis in the area. Abstract: Sea-level variations are the major factor controlling sedimentation as well as the biogeographic patterns at continental margins over late Quaternary times. Fluctuations on millennial time-scales produce locally complex deposits in coasts and on shelves, associated with short-term influence on species development. This article reviews the sedimentary and biogeographic history of the tropical siliciclastic Sunda Shelf as an end-member of continental shelves regarding extreme width, an enormous sediment supply, and highest biodiversity in response to rapid sea-level fluctuations. We describe particular depositional segments as part of a genetic succession of zones from land to the deep sea based on literature data, field observations, and calculation of hydro-isostatic adjustment effects on changing relative sea level. These segments are characterized by individual sedimentary processes and deposits, and by a specific potential for material storage and re-mobilization. Long-term regressive intervals led to overall sigmoidal-promoting, extremely thick, and wide succeeding units. In contrast, rapid lateral shifts of defined depocentres over long distances took place in response to short-term sea level fluctuations. Fully isolated small-scale sediment bodies formed when sea level changed at exceptionally high rates. As a result of the high availability of organic-rich sediments, mangrove and freshwater peats formed frequently over late Quaternary times. The appearance of thick, massive and widespread peats is mainly linked to time intervals of a sea-level rise at slow rates, whilst organic matter appears much more dispersely in the sediments during episodes of rapidly changing sea level. The preservation potential of the regressive units is generally high due to highest initial sediment supply, stabilizing soil formation during exposure and rapid subsidence. Preservation of depositional elements from other periods is more exceptional and either restricted to local morphological depressions or to episodes of rapid sea level change. Besides complex channel incision, an overall lowering of the sediment surface related to erosion, as deep as 20m or more, over wide areas took place mainly during sea level lowering. The final export of shelf material is documented by enormous mass-wasting packages on the associated continental slope. From a palaeogeographic perspective, the rapid formation or disappearance of special habitat zones, such as mangrove fringes and extended mud flats, led to species establishment or truncation in distribution. In addition, the opening or closure of ocean passages, as narrow bridges allowing limited species crossing or as fully colonized corridors, had severe impact on eco-fragmentation and the expansion or contraction of species. Independent of such particular conditions, sea-level changes have been too rapid over the past climatic cycle to allow full regeneration and mature development of coast-related ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of pre-earthquake ionospheric effects related to four successive shallow-focus earthquakes (M6.4 on July 28, 2018, M6.8, 5.9, 6.9 on August 05, 09 and 19, 2018) in Indonesia by the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES). By adopting the moving median method (MMM), the ionospheric electron density (Ne) detected by the Langmuir probe (LAP) onboard CSES presented remarkable enhancements along the orbits #2660-0 on July 27, #2721-0 and #2728-1 on July 31, #2827-0 and #2735-1 on August 7, #2934-0 on August 14, respectively, which were just 1, 5, 2 and 5 days before the four earthquakes. Moreover, the disturbances mainly appeared in the north and north-east within the distance of 2000 km from each epicenter. By comparing the disturbed orbits with their corresponding four nearest and four revisiting orbits as well as the predicted values from the International Reference Ionosphere 2016 model (IRI-2016), the results powerfully illustrated that CSES observed the ionospheric precursors preceding the four Indonesian earthquakes. To make the space-borne results more convincing, we further studied the grid total electron content (TEC) data from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE), which exhibited similar anomalies in both the temporal and spatial distributions. In the end, the superposed epoch analyses (SEA) method was conducted on 35 M ⩾ 5.8, depth⩽50 km earthquakes in Indonesia during 2007–2017 by using CODE TEC. The statistical results demonstrated that there were significant positive anomalies 1–7 days before earthquakes within 2000 km from the epicenters in this region. The positive plasma perturbations detected by CSES were highly suggested as the seismic-ionospheric effects before earthquakes. • The seismic-ionospheric effects in Indonesian region detected by the CSES satellite are investigated. • The accuracy of the CSES-derived results are verifiedby the IRI model and GIM-TEC datasets. • It is suggested that there are four pre-earthquake Ne anomalies just corresponding to four earthquakes. The antiretroviral factor tripartite motif protein 5 (TRIM5) gene-derived isoform (TRIMCyp) has been found in at least three species of Old World monkey: rhesus (Macaca mulatta), pig-tailed (Macaca nemestrina) and cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis) macaques. Although the frequency of TRIMCyp has been well studied in rhesus and pig-tailed macaques, the frequency and prevalence of TRIMCyp in cynomolgus macaques remain to be definitively elucidated. Here, the geographical and genetic diversity of TRIM5α/TRIMCyp in cynomolgus macaques was studied in comparison with their anti-lentiviral activity. It was found that the frequency of TRIMCyp in a population in the Philippines was significantly higher than those in Indonesian and Malaysian populations. Major and minor haplotypes of cynomolgus macaque TRIMCyp with single nucleotide polymorphisms in the cyclophilin A domain were also found. The functional significance of the polymorphism in TRIMCyp was examined, and it was demonstrated that the major haplotype of TRIMCyp suppressed human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) but not HIV-2, whilst the minor haplotype of TRIMCyp suppressed HIV-2 but not HIV-1. The major haplotype of TRIMCyp did not restrict a monkey-tropic HIV-1 clone, NL-DT5R, which contains a capsid with the simian immunodeficiency virus-derived loop between α-helices 4 and 5 and the entire vif gene. These results indicate that polymorphisms of TRIMCyp affect its anti-lentiviral activity. Overall, the results of this study will help our understanding of the genetic background of cynomolgus macaque TRIMCyp, as well as the host factors composing species barriers of primate lentiviruses.
