With the rapid development of urban agglomerations in northwest arid and semiarid regions of China, the scope of the urban heat island (UHI) effect has gradually expanded and gradually connected, and has formed a regional heat island (RHI) with a larger range of impact to the regional environment. However, there are few studies on the heat island effect of urban agglomerations in arid and semiarid regions, so this paper selects the urban agglomeration of Hohhot, Baotou and Ordos (HBO) of Inner Mongolia, China as the study area. Based on the 8-day composite Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface temperature data (156 scenes in all) and land use maps for 2005, 2010, and 2015, we analyze the spatiotemporal distributions of regional heat (cool) islands (RH(C)I) and the responses of surface temperatures to land-use changes in the diurnal and interannual surface cities. The results showed that: 1) from 2005 to 2015, urban areas showed the cold island effect during the day, with the area of the cold island showing a shrinking feature; at night, they showed the heat island effect, with the area of the heat island showing a first decrease and then an increase. 2) From 2005 to 2015, the land development (unutilized land to building land) brings the greatest temperature increase (ΔT = 1.36°C) during the day, while the greatest temperature change at night corresponds to the conversion of cultivated land to building land (ΔT = 0.78°C) exhibited the largest changes at night. From 2010 to 2015, the land development (grassland to building land) bring the greatest temperature increase (ΔT = 0.85°C) during the day, while the great temperature change at night corresponds to the conversion of water areas to building land (ΔT = 1.38°C) exhibited the largest changes at night. Exploring the spatial and temporal evolution of surface urban heat (cool) islands in urban agglomerations in arid and semiarid regions will help to understand the urbanization characteristics of urban agglomerations and provide a reference for the formulation of policies for the coordinated and healthy development of the region and co-governance of regional environmental problems. Zircon U–Pb ages, geochemical data and Sr–Nd isotopic data are presented for volcanic rocks from the lower Permian Dashizhai Formation. These rocks are widely distributed in the south-eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt in central Inner Mongolia, China. The volcanic rocks mainly consist of basaltic andesite and rhyolite, subordinate dacite and local andesite, and exhibit bimodal geochemical features. The results of zircon U–Pb dating indicate that the volcanic rocks formed during the early Permian (292–279 Ma). The mafic volcanic rocks belong to low-K tholeiitic to medium-K calc-alkaline series. These mafic volcanic rocks are also characterised by moderately enriched light rare earth element (LREE) patterns; high abundances of Th, U, Zr and Hf; negative Nb, Ta and Ti anomalies; initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios of 0.70514–0.70623; and positive ε Nd (t) values (+1.9 to +3.8). These features indicate that the mafic volcanic rocks were likely derived from the high-percentage partial melting of subduction-related metasomatised asthenospheric mantle. The felsic rocks show an A-type affinity, with enrichments in alkalis, Th, U and LREEs. The felsic rocks are depleted in Ba, Sr, Nb, Ta and Ti and exhibit moderately LREE-enriched patterns (La N /Yb N = 2.09–6.45) and strongly negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu ∗ = 0.04–0.25). These features, along with the positive ε Nd ( t ) values (+2.6 to +7.7) and young T DM2 ages (T DM2 = 435–916 Ma), indicate that the felsic rocks were likely derived from a juvenile crustal source that mainly consisted of juvenile mid-ocean ridge basalt -related rocks. The volcanic association in this study and in previously published work widely distributed in central Inner Mongolia. The observations in this study suggest that the lower Permian volcanic rocks formed in an identical tectonic environment. The regional geological data indicate that the bimodal volcanic rocks from the lower Permian Dashizhai Formation in the study area formed in an extensional setting that was likely related to post-collisional delamination. An Early Paleozoic acid volcanic sequence has been recently detected southeast of Sonid Zuoqi in central Inner Mongolia to constrain the tectonic evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt in this area. First, the volcanic rocks have zircon U–Pb ages of 439–445 Ma. They are characterized by (a) a high silica content, moderate alkali content and low iron content; (b) enrichment in light rare earth elements, depletion of heavy rare earth elements, and negative Eu anomalies; and (c) negative Nb, Ta, and Ti anomalies. Finally, the volcanic samples yield ε Hf (t) values of − 4.7 to + 9.2 with T DM2 ages of 835–1724 Ma. For petrogenesis, they were possibly arc derived, from predominant juvenile materials with subordinate ancient continental crust. Combined with previous studies, the Early Paleozoic Sonid Zuoqi arc magmatism can be divided into three stages: a primitive arc stage represented by 464–490 Ma low-K, calcic granitoids; a normal continental arc stage represented by 439–445 Ma medium-K, calcic to calcic-alkalic plutons and volcanic rocks and a syn-collisional stage represented by 423–424 Ma high-K granites. Furthermore, the timing and tectonic settings of the above magmatic rocks show similarities to those in Xilinhot and other areas of the northern Early to Mid-Paleozoic orogenic belt (NOB), although the rock assemblies and their proportions vary more or less in different areas. Accordingly, the NOB that formed on this arc was probably attributed to the northward subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean beginning at ~ 500 Ma, which experienced this type of arc development and was terminated by a soft collision before the Late Devonian. The northern Alxa orogenic belt, a junction between the western and eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), is not well understood, especially in its Carboniferous to Permian tectonic history. In this paper, an integrated study incorporating the geochronology, geochemistry, and isotopes of magmatic rocks and provenance analysis of clastic rocks is conducted to address the above issue. The zircon U Pb age data, both in this study and in previous studies, indicates that the Permian magmatic activities in the Alxa Block were intensive and peaked at ca. 276 Ma. The magmatic zircons yield negative ε Hf (t) values with a wide range, indicating their dominant derivation from the crustal reworking of the Alxa Block with the addition of juvenile materials. The Permian high-K to shoshonitic, I-type granitoids combined with the A-type granitoids/rhyolites were most likely formed in extensional settings. The late Carboniferous sandstones collected along the Badain Jaran fault yield a high proportion of early Paleozoic zircons peaked at ca. 429 Ma with both positive to negative Hf (t) values and a low proportion of Precambrian zircons with positive to negative Hf (t) values. Thus, their provenance were likely the Precambrian to Paleozoic rocks in the Alxa Block and in the terranes in the CAOB. The zircon age spectra with no indicators of Carboniferous zircons approximating their depositional age supports an extensional setting. The Permian A-type granites and volcanic rocks in the Alxa area have some geochemical affinity with the Permian alkaline granitoids in the eastern Tianshan–Beishan and central-north Inner Mongolia regions. The Solonker ophiolite is exposed along the border between Mongolia and China within the Solonker zone, the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), and it is composed dominantly of serpentinized peridotite with subordinate gabbro, basaltic lava, radiolarian-bearing siliceous rocks, and minor plagiogranite. Meanwhile, layered mafic–ultramafic cumulates are not ubiquitous. In this study, zircon grains from two gabbros and a plagiogranite yield 206 Pb/ 238 U ages of 259 ± 6 Ma, 257 ± 3 Ma and 263 ± 1 Ma. These data were interpreted to represent the formation age of the Solonker ophiolite. The studied gabbros and basalts have a tholeiitic composition, showing a MORB affinity. They are also characterized by enrichment of Pb and depletion of Nb relative to La and Th. Furthermore, the studied gabbros contain inherited zircon grains and display a large range of zircon Hf isotopes (εHf(t) = − 5.27 to + 10.19). These features imply that crustal contamination played an important role in the generation of these mafic rocks. Major elements derived from the radiolarian-bearing siliceous rocks suggest a continental margin setting. This is confirmed by rock association. Terrigenous rocks (sandstones and siltstones) interstratified with siliceous rocks. U–Pb dating of detrital zircon grains in sandstones from both the northern and southern sides of the Solonker ophiolite belt, along with published data, reveals that the Late Carboniferous–Early Permian strata in fault contact with the Solonker ophiolite was deposited above Early Paleozoic orogens. The lines of petrological, geochemical, geochronological, and isotopic evidence led us to propose that the Solonker ophiolite is a Late Permian continental margin-type body formed during the early stages of opening of an ocean basin, following rifting and break-up of the Early Paleozoic orogens. Identifying the petrogenesis and geodynamic mechanism of the Early Permian igneous rocks widely distributed in the Inner Mongolia–Daxing'an Orogenic Belt (IMDOB) is crucial for understanding the tectonic evolution of the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. In this study, a combined study of petrology, geochronology, and geochemistry of Early Permian volcanic–plutonic rocks from the Uliastai continental margin, northern IMDOB, was conducted aiming to constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic setting. The U Pb zircon data for the magmatic zircons indicate that the Baoligaomiao Formation (BG Fm.) volcanic rocks, including felsic and mafic rocks, erupted at approximately 298–285 Ma, and quartz monzonite porphyries that intruded the BG Fm. were emplaced at approximately 292 Ma. The mafic volcanic rocks exhibit intraplate nature with basaltic compositions transitional between the calc-alkaline and shoshonite series. The geochemical behavior and isotopic data of these volcanic rocks reflect a depleted lithospheric mantle source metasomatized by fluids released from the stagnant slab. Felsic volcanics and quartz monzonite porphyries show affinities with A-type granites and are derived from the partial melting of juvenile crustal materials. Moreover, we suggest that the Early Permian magmatism formed in a post-collisional extensional setting, which is the continuation of the Late Carboniferous extension and was induced by the lithospheric collapse after the slab break-off of the Hegenshan Ocean. Notably, the felsic rocks formed after 290 Ma, with affinity changing from A 2 -type to A 1 -type granite, and approximately 288 Ma mafic volcanic rocks exhibited intraplate characteristics. These changes, combined with the development of coeval bimodal volcanic rocks and dike swarms, suggest that the tectonic setting at the end of the Early Permian in the northern IMDOB may have gradually transferred to an intraplate environment. • Mafic rocks were derived by melting of depleted lithospheric mantle. • Felsic rocks with depleted Hf isotopes record the reworking of juvenile crust. • They formed in a post-collisional setting after the closure of Hegenshan Ocean. • Tectonic setting transferred to an intraplate extension in the late Early Permian. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopic and whole-rock geochemical data of Carboniferous–Early Permian felsic igneous rocks from the Uliastai continental margin (UCM), southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, to constrain the amalgamation of the Inner Mongolia–Daxing'an Orogenic Belt (IMDOB) in the late Paleozoic. Zircon laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry U Pb ages of monzogranite, granite porphyry, felsic volcanic rock, and alkali feldspar granite reveal three stages of magmatism in the Early Carboniferous (ca. 336–320 Ma), Late Carboniferous (ca. 311–307 Ma), and Early Permian (ca. 298 Ma). The Early Carboniferous igneous rocks, including monzogranites and later granite porphyries, exhibit affinity with the high-K calc-alkaline highly fractionated I-type granite, and are depleted in high-field-strength elements and enriched in large-ion lithophile elements. Their zircon ε Hf (t) values of the Early Carboniferous rocks range from +4.6 to +9.1, indicating that they were generated by partial melting of the juvenile crustal materials in a north-dipping subduction-related environment along with the opening of the Hegenshan Ocean. The Late Carboniferous felsic volcanic rocks are highly fractionated high-K calc-alkaline to alkali-calcic I- and A-type granitoids, with relatively strong peraluminous affinities. Considering the zircon ε Hf (t) values (+6.2 to +10.6) and relatively low Rb/Ba (0.71–3.57) and Rb/Sr (4.18–8.12) ratios, they were likely derived from a juvenile crust and are comparable to partial melts of clay-poor but plagioclase-rich metaigneous rocks. Notably, the A-type granitoids are gradually increasing in the UCM after 311 Ma, and these magmatic rocks have markedly increased zircon saturation temperatures and (K 2 O + Na 2 O)/CaO ratios. These changes may result from the slab break-off of the Hegenshan Ocean, and the Late Carboniferous felsic volcanic rocks were formed in a post-collisional setting. The Early Permian alkali feldspar granites are characterized by typical A-type granite geochemistry, with high Ga/Al ratios; low MgO, Cr, Co, and Ni contents; and high zircon saturation temperatures. These rocks have positive ε Hf (t) values of +10.2 to +12.7 and record an intracontinental extension setting. In combination with the regional geology, the Late Carboniferous post-collisional magmatic rocks suggest that a change from a subduction-related continental margin to a post-collisional tectonic regime might have occurred in the UCM before 311 Ma. • Late Paleozoic magmatism can be subdivided into three stages. • Magmatic rocks after 336 Ma formed in a subduction-related environment. • A tectonic setting transformed into post-collision occurred before 311 Ma. • Early Permian rocks formed in a regional-scale lithospheric extension setting. Abstract: We present a structural and kinematic study of an Early Paleozoic subduction mélange and a magmatic arc that form the main elements of the Southern Orogen Belt of Inner Mongolia, which lies in the eastearn part of the Altaids or Central Asia Orogenic Belt. The structural analysis of the mélange conducted in the Hongqi and Ondor Sum areas (western Inner Mongolia) shows two phrases of ductile deformation. The D 1 event is responsible for the pervasive S 1 foliation, NW–SE striking L 1 stretching lineation and F 1 intrafolial folds. These microstructures are coeval with a greenschist facies metamorphism. During D 2, NW-verging F 2 folds associated with a S 2 axial planar cleavage deformed S 1 and L 1. The D 1 kinematic criteria indicate a top-to-the-NW sense of shear. D 1 and D 2 developed before the unconformable deposition of the Early Devonian shallow water sandstone. A lithosphere scale geodynamic model involving an Early Paleozoic southeast-directed subduction beneath the North China Craton and late Silurian collision of the North China Craton with an hypothetical microcontinent is proposed to account for the microstructural evolution. The paleoclimate since 14 kyr BP (14C age) was reconstructed based on a 16.22-m-long sediment core collected from Lake Yanhaizi, a saline lake located near the northern limit of the East Asian summer monsoon in Inner Mongolia. Coarse sediments were deposited there during a shrinkage phase of the lake when sand dunes reactivated. These sediments have low organic carbon contents but high maturity indices, indicating that they were deposited in an arid environment. By contrast, based on high organic contents and low maturity indices, fine sediments were deposited during periods of high lake stand in a humid environment. It was in general dry between 8.0 and 4.3 kyr BP. The above dry and wet phases are consistent with those recovered from the arid–semiarid transition zone elsewhere, but are unlike the widely perceived humid Holocene Megathermal reported in east China and the newly reconstructed record in the alpine Retreat Lake in Taiwan. The discrepancy may be due to a relative insensitivity to humidity changes in these two areas since they have both been under the total influence of the summer monsoon. On the other hand, much enhanced evaporation over higher monsoon precipitation at Lake Yanhaizi reduces the effective humidity in the warm climate near the northern boundary of the summer monsoon. This also accounts for the fact the high-temperature Holocene Megathermal, as revealed in the Okinawa Trough and the northern South China Sea, is correlated to the dry phases at Lake Yanhaizi. Conversely, the 4–2-kyr BP coldest period in the Holocene corresponds to a wet phase at Lake Yanhaizi. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
