The two-dimensional finite element model SHYFEM is used to study the hydrodynamics and variability of temperature and salinity of the Taranto Sea. The model is calibrated and validated with experimental data collected by local research organizations during in situ campaigns from 2000 to 2001. A 1-year simulation was set up taking into account different forcings such as tide, meteorological data, and fresh water discharges. The results show that the temperature variability is well reproduced in the basin and salinity is mainly determined by the contribution of fresh water inflow and evaporation process. The final results from the model are in good agreement with the measured data and this study will be a first step towards a water quality model for the Taranto Sea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
