Enhancing reproductive performance is a key strategy to mitigate involuntary culling rates, thereby extending productive life (PL) and ultimately improving profitability in dairy cattle herds. A piecewise Weibull proportional hazards model was used to investigate the effect of several important reproductive traits on PL in Holstein dairy cows. Data comprised 200,747 lactation records from 82,505 cows sired by 1952 bulls across 36 dairy herds. PL was defined as the number of days from the first calving to the last milk record or censoring. The statistical model accounted for the time-dependent fixed effects of changes in herd size, year-season, milk production, fat and protein contents, and the time-independent fixed effect of age at first calving. Herd-year and sire effects were also included as random effects. Reproductive traits include calving traits such as calving ease (CE), calf size (CZ), and calf survival (CS), as well as female fertility traits such as number of inseminations per conception (NI), days from calving to first service (CFS), days from first service to conception (FSC), and days open (DO). All reproductive traits had a significant effect on PL (p < 0.001). Each reproductive trait was analysed separately. The relative risk (RR) of being culled increased as the severity of calving difficulties increased in both primiparous and multiparous cows. Cows that calved small or large calves showed a higher risk of being culled compared with those that calved medium size calves. The increased RR of culling was observed only for primiparous cows that gave birth to dead calves. In addition, cows that required more NI, a longer CFS, FSC, and DO had shorter longevity. These insights can deepen our comprehension of the factors affecting PL and provide information for refining management and breeding strategies, which could lead to increased profitability and sustainability in Iranian dairy farming., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH. The aim was to estimate the relative contribution of imprinting effects from both paternal and maternal sides to phenotypic variation in milk production traits including 305 days milk yield (MY), average daily milk production (ADM), fat percentage (F%), protein percentage (P%), 305 days fat yield (FY), 305 days protein yield (PY), ratio of fat percentage to protein percentage (F:P) and somatic cell score (SCS) in Iranian Holstein cows. To do this, each trait was analysed with a series of four animal models, which were identical for fixed and additive genetic effects but differed for combinations of paternal and maternal imprinting effects. The log-likelihood ratio test (LRT) and Akaike's information criteria (AIC) were used to select the best model for each trait. Correlations between traits due to additive and imprinting effects were estimated by bivariate analyses. For all traits studied, fitting the imprinting effect led to a better data fit. Also, it resulted in a noticeable decrease in additive genetic variance from 8% (SCS) to 28% (F:P). A significant maternal imprinting effect was detected on all traits studied. Estimates of maternal imprinting heritability ( h mi 2 ) were 0.07 ± 0.02, 0.04 ± 0.01, 0.06 ± 0.01, 0.05 ± 0.01, 0.5 ± 0.01, 0.09 ± 0.02, 0.07 ± 0.02 and 0.06 ± 0.01 for MY, ADM, F%, P%, FY, PY, F:P and SCS, respectively. For F:P, in addition to the maternal imprinting effect, a significant paternal imprinting component was also detected with a 7% contribution to phenotypic variance of F:P. Estimates of direct heritability ( h a 2 ) were 0.29 ± 0.02, 0.17 ± 0.01, 0.22 ± 0.02, 0.11 ± 0.01, 0.18 ± 0.02, 0.22 ± 0.02, 0.15 ± 0.04 and 0.06 ± 0.01 for MY, ADM, F%, P%, FY, PY, F:P and SCS, respectively. Maternal imprinting correlations (r mi ) were in a wide range between -0.75 ± 0.15 (P%-SCS) and 0.95 ± 0.11 (MY-ADM). Additive genetic correlations (r a ) ranged between -0.54 ± 0.05 (MY-P%) and 0.99 ± 0.01 (MY-ADM) and phenotypic correlations (r p ) ranged from -0.30 ± 0.01 (MY-F%) to 0.93 ± 0.01 (MY-ADM). The Spearman's correlation between additive breeding values including and excluding imprinting effects deviated from unity especially for top-ranked animals implying re-ranking of top animals following the inclusion of imprinting effects in the model. Since including imprinting effects in the model resulted in better data fit and re-ranking of top animals, including these effects in the genetic evaluation models for milk production traits was recommended., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH. The purpose of this study was to assess how various MUN levels affected the reproductive performance traits of Iranian Holsteins. The dataset used in this study included reproduction performance records for 16,000 Holstein cows and was gathered by the Animal Breeding Center and Promotion of Animal Products of Iran on 30 large dairy herds during 2018-2021. The MUN concentrations were grouped into four classes: [Formula: see text] mg/dL (MUN1), [Formula: see text] mg/dL (MUN2), [Formula: see text] mg/dL (MUN3), and [Formula: see text] mg/dL (MUN4). The study took into account various reproductive and fertility traits, such as the number of inseminations per conception (NINS), the percentage of pregnant cows till 120 days in milk (PP120), the calving interval (CI), the days open (DO), the days from calving to the first service (DCFS), the first service conception rate (FSCR), and the abortion rate (ABR). The impact of MUN levels on the incidence of abortion and non-pregnancy in dairy cows was investigated using logistic regression models. Also, to evaluate the effect of MUN concentrations on reproduction traits, a generalized linear model was used. The MUN2 group had the greatest odds of non-pregnancy (P < 0.05; OR = 2.81; MUN2 vs. MUN1). Also, the MUN4 group had the greatest odds of abortion (P < 0.01, OR = 3.36; MUN4 vs. MUN1). The MUN2 and MUN4 groups had the greatest (51.91%) and the lowest (34.32%) FSCR, respectively. MUN classes had a significant influence on DO (P < 0.05), and MUN4 had the largest value (145.44 days). Background: Voluntary waiting period (VWP), housing systems and the presence of a veterinarian are effective factors on reproductive performance of a dairy farm., Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the management practices associated with VWP and its effects on reproductive performance., Methods: A total of 136,943 records of 21,756 cows that calved between 1990 and 2013 were used. A questionnaire was also conducted with the farms involved to determine if they adjust the timing of insemination based on the body condition score (BCS) of the cows, postpartum health situation (PPHS) or environmental factors such as heat stress and season. The impact of changing the VWP selectively, the presence of a veterinarian and the type of barn on reproductive outcomes like days open (DO), number of services per conception (NSPC) and days to first service (DFS) was examined using a linear mixed model. This model considered animals and herds as random factors and management practices as fixed factors in the analysis., Results: Among herds that reported altering the VWP based on heat stress, DFS significantly increased (61.68 ± 0.68 vs. 58.4 ± 0.83) while DO (119.70 ± 1.86 vs. 126.9 ± 2.29) and NSPC (1.98 ± 0.04 vs. 2.48 ± 0.05) reduced compared to herds that did not alter the VWP. Our results showed that farms with a full-time veterinarian had a better reproductive performance than those with part-time care (p < 0.05). Housing system was significantly associated with fertility traits, so that cows in free-stall barns were more fertile than those kept in open-shed barns., Conclusions: The obtained results from this study indicated that management decisions to selectively altering the VWP led to difference in DFS and improved reproductive performance., (© 2024 The Author(s). Understanding the factors that influence the lifespan of dairy cows is crucial for enhancing their productive life (PL). This study aimed to investigate the impact of genetic and environmental effects on the PL of Holstein cows. Data included 82,505 cows from 1952 sires that calved for the first time between 2001 and 2016. PL was defined from first calving to culling. Proportional hazard models, assuming a piecewise Weibull distribution of the baseline hazard function, were utilized to account for time-dependent effects, such as herd size variations, year-season, milk yield, fat and protein contents, and the time-independent fixed effect of age at first calving. Herd-year and sire effects were considered as random effects. All effects showed significant associations with PL (p < 0.001). The relative risk of culling was higher in heifers that calved at an older age and cows that calved during the cold season. Moreover, cows with lower production had a significantly shorter PL compared with high-producing cows. The effective heritability in the absence of censored data was estimated at 0.15. These findings suggest that greater attention should be paid to regular and accurate breeding programs, which are essential for enhancing profitability and the PL of Iranian dairy cows., (© 2024 Japanese Society of Animal Science.)

The present study assessed whether the genetic variation among different hosts (sheep and cattle) and geographical isolates (n= 28) of Dicrocoelium dendriticum from Iran is present based on mitochondrial (nad1) and ribosomal (ITS-2) DNA markers. Molecular analysis revealed the presence of at least ten and two distinct haplotypes in the NADH dehydrogenase gene (nad1) and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2), respectively. The nad1 and ITS-2 sequence data were deposited in GenBank under accession numbers, JX050110–134 and JQ966972–3. According to the results of our study, ND-D and ITS-A are established as being the predominant haplotypes of D. dendriticum in Iran. The Iranian isolates showed a higher intraspecific genetic diversity of 0–0.97% for nad1, compared to 0–0.42% for ITS-2. The alignment and comparison of nad1 and ITS-2 sequences revealed eight and one polymorphic sites, respectively. In the nad1 sequences, six were silent and two nucleotide substitutions were responsible for amino acid alterations. A phylogenetic analysis of the sequence data revealed that host associations and geographic location are not likely useful markers for D. dendriticum haplotype classification. Consequently, sequencing results obtained from the nad1 gene as a mitochondrial marker for the first time in this study would provide a valuable tool to analyse further molecular details of D. dendriticum worldwide. The aim of the work reported here was to investigate the appropriateness of a sinusoidal function by applying it to model the cumulative lactation curves for milk yield and composition in primiparous Holstein cows, and to compare it with three conventional growth models (linear, Richards and Morgan). Data used in this study were 911 144 test-day records for milk, fat and protein yields, which were recorded on 834 dairy herds from 2000 to 2011 by the Animal Breeding Centre and Promotion of Animal Products of Iran. Each function was fitted to the test-day production records using appropriate procedures in SAS (PROC REG for the linear model and PROC NLIN for the Richards, Morgan and sinusoidal equations) and the parameters were estimated. The models were tested for goodness of fit using adjusted coefficient of determination $\lpar {R&#95;{{\rm adj}}^2 } \rpar $, root mean square error (RMSE), Akaike's information criterion (AIC) and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC). $R&#95;{{\rm adj}}^2 $ values were generally high (>0.999), implying suitable fits to the data, and showed little differences among the models for cumulative yields. The sinusoidal equation provided the lowest values of RMSE, AIC and BIC, and therefore the best fit to the lactation curve for cumulative milk, fat and protein yields. The linear model gave the poorest fit to the cumulative lactation curve for all production traits. The current results show that classical growth functions can be fitted accurately to cumulative lactation curves for production traits, but the new sinusoidal equation introduced herein, by providing best goodness of fit, can be considered a useful alternative to conventional models in dairy research.

This study aimed to investigate the genetic variability of conception rate (CR) and non-return rate (NR) in Iranian dairy cows under heat stress conditions. A total of 34,304 records of CR, and NR at 45 days (NR45) and 90 days (NR90) after the first insemination, from 21,405 Holstein cows were included in this study. The weather records were obtained from seven meteorological stations located at a distance of less than 70 km from the farms. Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) was determined for each record on the insemination day. The statistical models for CR, NR45, and NR90 included the fixed effects of herd-year-season, parity, milk yield, and THI. Genetic components were estimated using an animal model and fitting random regression models on THI based on the Bayesian method. Results showed similar decreasing trends for CR, NR45, and NR90 when increasing the THI levels. The additive genetic variance of heat tolerance for CR, NR45, and NR90 were 0.008 ± 0.0004, 0.0262 ± 0.007, and 0.0254 ± 0.006, respectively. The additive genetic variance of heat tolerance increased directly with THI, and therefore, our findings indicate that a combined selection using heat tolerance can be considered for genetic evaluation of reproduction traits under heat stress conditions.

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for environmental sensitivities in milk yield and composition of Iranian Holstein cows using the double hierarchical generalized linear model (DHGLM) method. Data set included test-day productive records of cows which were provided by the Animal Breeding Center and Promotion of Animal Products of Iran during 1983 to 2014. In the DHGLM method, a random regression model was fitted which included two parts of mean and residual variance. A random regression model (mean model) and a residual variance model were used to study the genetic variation of micro-environmental sensitivities. In order to consider macro-environmental sensitivities, DHGLM was extended using a reaction norm model, and a sire model was applied. Based on the mean model, additive genetic variances for the mean were 38.25 for milk yield, 0.23 for fat yield and 0.03 for protein yield in the first lactation, respectively. Based on the residual variance model, additive genetic variances for residual variance were 0.039 for milk yield, 0.030 for fat yield and 0.020 for protein yield in the first lactation, respectively. Estimates of genetic correlation between milk yield and macro- and micro-environmental sensitivities were 0.660 and 0.597 in the first lactation, respectively. The results of this study indicated that macro- and micro-environmental sensitivities were present for milk production traits of Iranian Holsteins. High genetic coefficient of variation for micro-environmental sensitivities indicated the possibility of reducing environmental variation and increase in uniformity via selection.

The main objective of this study was to compare the performance of different 'nonlinear quantile regression' models evaluated at the τth quantile (0·25, 0·50, and 0·75) of milk production traits and somatic cell score (SCS) in Iranian Holstein dairy cows. Data were collected by the Animal Breeding Center of Iran from 1991 to 2011, comprising 101 051 monthly milk production traits and SCS records of 13 977 cows in 183 herds. Incomplete gamma (Wood), exponential (Wilmink), Dijkstra and polynomial (Ali & Schaeffer) functions were implemented in the quantile regression. Residual mean square, Akaike information criterion and log-likelihood from different models and quantiles indicated that in the same quantile, the best models were Wilmink for milk yield, Dijkstra for fat percentage and Ali & Schaeffer for protein percentage. Over all models the best model fit occurred at quantile 0·50 for milk yield, fat and protein percentage, whereas, for SCS the 0·25th quantile was best. The best model to describe SCS was Dijkstra at quantiles 0·25 and 0·50, and Ali & Schaeffer at quantile 0·75. Wood function had the worst performance amongst all traits. Quantile regression is specifically appropriate for SCS which has a mixed multimodal distribution.

The objective of this study was to establish different single or multiple trait selection indices to calculate genetic and economic gains by combining some production, reproduction and udder health traits in a population similar to the overall practical situation in Iran, with and without imposing restrictions on genetic change for some traits. The SelAction software was used to perform the analyses based on selection index theory through a deterministic model. Results indicated that among established indices, the index that showed the highest genetic gain for milk yield did not maximize the total genetic and economic gains. Rather, the index that included all production, reproduction and udder health traits yielded the highest genetic and economic gains. When we placed restriction on the selection indices, the economic gain decreased and the amount of reduction depended on the heritability and the correlation of restricted trait(s) with other traits. Generally, regarding the economic genetic gain per generation, the indices based on records of 200 offspring were 4.819% more efficient than those that used information of 100 offspring.

In this study, changes in the chemical composition, pH, cell wall and degradability of ensiled rice straw were investigated when treated with alkali, acid, oxidant agents (1-11 %, w/w) and a combination of an oxidant with either an alkali (ALHP) or an acid (ACHP). The findings of the study revealed that ALHP had a lower efficiency in enhancing fibre degradability compared to alkali alone. Oxidant treatment showed no detectable changes in pH, dry matter (DM) and phenolic compound (PC) solubility, or in silica and fibre content, but led to increased esterified groups formed within the cell wall constituents (hemicellulose and lignin). Increasing acid concentration led to an exponential change in both pH and solubility of DM and hemicelluloses while it quadratically increased PC and silica solubility. Moreover, crystallinity, hydrogen bonding and esterification were enhanced under high acid concentrations (11 %), but decreased under mild acid conditions (5 %). Increased alkalinity led to the linear enhancement of DM and PC solubility. Solubility of silica and hemicellulose did not exhibit any significant changes with alkali concentration above 7 %. A gradual enhancement (29 %) was observed in ruminal DM degradability with increasing oxidant concentration, whereas exponential (91 %) and quadratic (23 %) enhancements were observed with alkaline and acid treatments, respectively. Treatment with acid showed observable reductions in the degradability of both cellulose and hemicellulose, whereas oxidant treatment reduced only that of hemicellulose. Treatment with 7 % alkali (pH ∼ 12) followed by ensiling appeared to be a promising process for improving rice straw quality.

The study was undertaken to determine the trends in the reproductive performance of Holstein dairy cows in Iran during 1994 to 2008. Reproductive performance data for 528,034 lactations of 246,132 cows in 1,822 Holstein dairy herds of Iran were used. The potential effect of calving season, herd, parity, calving year, as well as herd size and 305-day milk production on reproductive performance traits was investigated using multiple regression models. The least squares means of age at first calving decreased by 3.1 (± 0.06) days per year from 806.5 (± 96.3) days in 1994 to 788 (± 89.9) days in 2008. The least squares means of calving interval increased 1.02 (± 0.03) days per year from 394.1 (± 65) days in 1994 to 413.2 (± 81) days in 2008. Greater 305-day milk production was associated with an average increase of 6.55 (± 0.08) days in calving interval per 1,000-kg increase in milk yield. Larger herd size was associated with an average decrease of 0.22 (± 0.02) days in calving interval per 50 cows per herd. The mean number of days dry was 88.6 (± 51.3) days and increased by 0.82 (± 0.02) days per year. In conclusion, reproductive performance in Holstein dairy herds has generally decreased, whereas herd size and milk production have increased over time. Producers may make significant improvements in herd reproduction by reviewing management strategies including the sire selection, reproductive management, inseminator training and techniques, and improved estrous detection. Moreover, it may be advisable for the fertility traits to be included in the genetic selection indices to reduce the rate of reproductive decline.

This study investigated the effects of, and interactions between, dietary grain source and marginal changes in alfalfa hay (AH) particle size (PS) on digestive processes of dairy cows. A total of eight Holstein dairy cows (175 days in milk) were allocated in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 21-day periods. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two levels of theoretical PS of AH (fine = 15 mm or long = 30 mm) each combined with two different sources of cereal grains (barley grain alone or barley plus corn grain in a 50 : 50 ratio). Results showed that cows consuming diets supplemented with corn had greater dry matter and nutrient intakes (P < 0.01), independent of forage PS. In addition, the apparent digestibility of fiber fractions was greater for diets supplemented with corn (P = 0.01). The feeding of barley grain-based diets was associated with greater apparent digestibility of non-fiber carbohydrates, and this variable was even greater when long AH was fed (P = 0.04). Moreover, the feeding of long AH resulted in longer time spent eating (P = 0.03) and higher pH (P < 0.01), as well as a tendency for higher acetate-to-propionate ratio in the rumen fluid (P = 0.06) at 3 h post feeding. In conclusion, the results indicated that the marginal increase of PS of AH may prolong eating time and improve rumen fermentation, particularly in diets based on barley grain. Partial substitution of barley grain by corn can improve feed intake and fiber digestibility in mid-lactation dairy cows.

Calving records from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran collected from January 2000 to December 2007 and comprising 520964 Holstein calving events from 2135 herds were analysed using animal and sire models to estimate variance components, heritabilities and genetic trends for secondary sex ratio (SSR) in the first, second and third parities. Direct heritabilities for SSR ranged from 0.00004 to 0.001 over the parities. The linear sire model estimate of heritabilities for SSR in the present study was from 0.0002 to 0.0008 over the parities. There were positive phenotypic and genetic trends for female rate in Iranian Holsteins over the years. Exploitable genetic variation in SSR can take advantage of sexual dimorphism for economically important traits, which may facilitate greater selection intensity and thus greater response to selection, as well as reducing the replacement costs. On the other hand, increasing genetic and phenotypic trends for female rate in the population under study could be partly assigned to increased use of new reproductive technologies in dairy herds; therefore, dairy farmers have the option to select from among their herd's potential dams and produce dairy replacement heifers from only the genetically superior animals, thus promoting enhanced rates of genetic gain.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting secondary sex ratio (SSR) in Iranian Holsteins. Data of 942,941 Holstein calving events from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran, recorded between January 1996 and December 2007, were used in the analysis. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to model the logit of the probability of a male calf being born. Male births accounted for 49.6% of the total observations. The ratio of males to females varied from 52.5:47.5 in calving year 1996-1999 (odds ratio (OR)=1.18; P<0.0001), to 48.5:51.5 in calving year 2004-2007. The greatest occurrence of male births was observed in spring (OR=1.02; P<0.0001), and the lowest incidence of male births was for summer or fall calvings. Also, the frequency of male births decreased from parity 1 to parity 4 and beyond (P<0.0001; OR=1.11). The greatest number of sires had the SSR equal to 0.5 with a minimum SSR of 32% while the maximum was 97%. Among cows that had a male birth, the chance of delivering a male calf again was 25.5% when cows had delivered a male once (OR=1.14; P<0.0001), and 12.7% if a male calf was delivered twice by a cow. This indicated that characteristics peculiar to the dam influence the sex of her offspring and suggests some degree of repeatability of calf sex within cows., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Calving records from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran collected from January 1987 to December 2007 and comprising 292,875 calving events of Holsteins from 1,413 dairy herds were analyzed using univariate and bivariate linear animal models to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations for calving intervals in the first three lactations of Holstein cows. Genetic trends were obtained by regressing yearly mean estimates of breeding values on calving year. Average calving intervals were from 406 to 414 days and decreased over the parities. Heritability estimates for calving intervals varied from 0.03 to 0.04 across the parities. Also, estimates of genetic correlations between calving intervals in different parities were high and ranged from 0.67 to 0.89. The average annual phenotypic trends obtained from fitting linear regression of annual mean calving intervals at parity 1 and 2 were significant (P < 0.01), but the phenotypic trend of calving interval at parity 3 was not significant over the years. On the other hand, there was an increasing genetic trend for calving interval at parity 1, and there were decreasing genetic trends for calving intervals at parity 2 and 3 over the years (P < 0.01). The low estimates of heritability obtained in this study imply that much of the improvement in calving interval traits could be attained by improvement of production environment rather than genetic selection.

This study was aimed to assess genetic parameters for 13 traits in heifers and first-parity Holstein dairy cows. Data consisted of calving and insemination dates of 14,707 Holstein dairy cows in Isfahan province of Iran. Reproductive traits included age at first service (AFS), first service to conception (FSTC), gestation length (GL), age at first calving (AFC), calving to first service (CTFS), days open (DO), calving interval (CI), number of services per conception (NS), and non-return rate at 56 days (NRR). Model equations were optimized using GLM procedure in SAS package following genetic analysis using animal models in ASREML software. Minimum and maximum departure from normal distribution for phenotypic records belonged to AFS, NRR, GL, DO, CI and AFC, NS, FSTC, CTFS, respectively. Estimated heritability varied from 0.002 (NRR) to 0.184 (GL) in heifers and from 0.003 (NRR) to 0.153 (GL) in first-parity cows. AFS, CTFS, and GL were noticeably heritable compared to other assessed traits. Estimated absolute additive genetic correlations were in the range of 0.01 (NRR and AFS) and 0.99 (NRR and NS) in heifers and 0.07 (GL and CI) to 1 (FSTC and CI) in cows. Additive genetic correlations were antagonistic between AFS and other traits, except AFC. Interestingly, NRR which has been included in sire catalogs had the highest average absolute genetic associations with other traits.

Calving records from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran collected from January 1983 to December 2007 and comprising 1,163,594 Holstein calving events from 2552 herds were used to evaluate the potential effect of abortion occurrence on 305-day milk yield, milk fat yield, fat percentage of milk and milk protein yield in Iranian Holsteins. Statistical analyses of production traits were performed using a linear mixed model procedure. Normal-calved cows had greater 305-day milk production, fat yield and protein yield of milk than abortive-calved cows (P < 0.05). However, abortive-calved cows had the greater milk fat percentage than normal calved cows (P < 0.05). The linear and quadratic effects of age of dam were significant on all of the studied traits (P < 0.05). The results of regression analysis showed that increase in the quadratic effect of age can cause an increase in the fat percentage of milk for all calvings including normal and abortive calvings. The objectives of the present study were to describe the current reproductive parameters of Holstein dairy cows in Iran and to determine factors which have a significant effect on reproductive performance with emphasis on high-producing dairy cows. Five large Holstein dairy herds from the major milk production areas of Iran were selected for this study. Reproduction data including parity of dam, calving date, days to first service, days open, number of services, dry period, and occurrence of diseases for cows that calved from 2004 to 2007 were collected from the herds' databases. To determine the effects of year and season of calving, disease status, level of milk production, and parity of dam on reproductive parameters, the proc-mixed procedure in SAS software was used. Overall, data about 8,204 lactation were collected for the study. Results showed that mean (+/-SD) days open, calving interval, and days to first service for study herds were 134 (+/-89), 403 (+/-86), and 67 (+/-38) days, respectively. Conception rates at the first service and the overall service-conception rate were 41.6% and 41%, respectively. The level of milk production and diseases had significant negative effects on days open and service per conception (P < 0.05); statistical analysis showed that for every 100-kg increase in milk yield, days open will increase by about 0.3 days. However, no significant effect of level of productivity was observed on days to first service. The results of this study indicate that high milk production is a risk factor for decreasing fertility in Iran, like many other parts of the world.

Pedigree information of 852,443 registered Holstein cows and bulls, collected by the Animal Breeding Center of Iran from 1971 to 2007, was used to calculate inbreeding coefficients and their effect on production, reproduction, somatic cell count, calving ease, and longevity traits. The average inbreeding coefficient for the entire population was 2.90%, ranging from zero to 47.03%. The rates of inbreeding from 1989 to 2007 were 0.22 and 0.15% per year for females and males, respectively. The rates were higher after 2000, being 0.31 and 0.21% per year for females and males, respectively. Inbreeding had a deleterious effect on most traits. For the first 3 lactations, the inbreeding depression per 1% increase in inbreeding was -18.72, -16.19, and -27.38 kg for milk yield, -0.443, -0.367, and -0.690 kg for fat yield, and -0.476, -0.425, and -0.66 kg for protein yield, respectively. For all reproductive traits, the observed undesirable effect of inbreeding was not significant, except for the calving interval (0.53 d per 1% increase in inbreeding) in the third parity and age at first calving (0.45 d per 1% increase in inbreeding). Calving ease in heifers and cows was significantly influenced by the inbreeding of the dam, indicating that highly inbred cows had a higher incidence of difficult calvings. The estimate of inbreeding depression for somatic cell score was low and significant only for the third lactation. However, animals with high inbreeding coefficient tended to have higher somatic cell scores than animals with low inbreeding coefficients. For type traits, the influence of inbreeding was significant only for stature, chest width, body depth, size, rear udder height, suspensory ligament, udder depth, and front and rear teat placement. Purpose: To determine trends in calving ages and calving interval as measures of reproductive performance in Iranian Holsteins in Fars province, southern Iran during 2000-2005., Methods: Data about birth dates and previous calving dates for cows which calved between 21 March 2004 to 20 March 2005 were retrieved from the database of the Agricultural Jihad Organization of the province. Overall, calving records for 1134 cows from 12 herds during 2000-2005 were included in the statistical models., Results: Mean calving interval was 435 days in 2000 and declined significantly to 389 days during the study period (P < 0.001). Age at first calving decreased significantly from 30 months in 2000 to 26 months in 2005 (P < 0.001). The corresponding measures for age at second calving were 44 and 41 months, respectively (P = 0.003). Cows which calved during warm months had significantly (P < 0.001) higher calving interval (420 days) compared with calving in cold months (411 days). No significant effect for parity on calving interval was observed in this study., Conclusions: Reproductive performance revealed relatively positive trend in the Iranian Holsteins in Fars province. This could be attributed to better management and nutrition practices during this period and also to the fact that large genetic trend for milk which has been observed in countries with decreasing reproductive performance has not occurred in these herds yet.

Calving records from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran, collected from January 1991 to December 2007 and comprising 1,163,594 Holstein calving events from 2,552 herds, were analyzed using a linear animal model, linear sire model, threshold animal model, and threshold sire model to estimate variance components, heritabilities, genetic correlations, and genetic trends for twinning rate in the first, second, and third parities. The overall twinning rate was 3.01%. Mean incidence of twins increased from first to fourth and later parities: 1.10, 3.20, 4.22, and 4.50%, respectively. For first-parity cows, a maximum frequency of twinning was observed from January through April (1.36%), and second- and third-parity cows showed peaks from July to September (at 3.35 and 4.55%, respectively). The phenotypic rate of twinning decreased from 1991 to 2007 for the first, second, and third parities. Sire predicted transmitting abilities were estimated using linear sire model and threshold sire model analyses. Sire transmitting abilities for twinning rate in the first, second, and third parities ranged from -0.30 to 0.42, -0.32 to 0.31, and -0.27 to 0.30, respectively. Heritability estimates of twinning rate for parities 1, 2, and 3 ranged from 1.66 to 10.6%, 1.35 to 9.0%, and 1.10 to 7.3%, respectively, using different models for analysis. Heritability estimates for twinning rate, obtained from the analysis of threshold models, were greater than the estimates of linear models. Solutions for age at calving for the first, second, and third parities demonstrated that cows older at calving were more likely to have twins. Genetic correlations for twinning rate between parities 2 and 3 were greater than correlations between parities 1 and 2 and between parities 1 and 3. There was a slightly increasing trend for twinning rate in parities 1, 2, and 3 over time with the analysis of linear animal and linear sire models, but the trend for twinning rate in parities 1, 2, and 3 with threshold animal model analysis was decreased over the years. There was a significant decreasing trend for twinning rate in parities 1 and 2 over time with the threshold sire model analysis, but the genetic trend for twinning rate in parity 3 with this model of analysis was significant and positive. In general, there were increasing genetic trends for twinning rate from parities 1 through 3 using different models of analysis.

Calving records of Holstein dairy cows from April 1998 to September 2006 comprising 16 herds with 104,572 calving events representing 4,045 twin births were used to evaluate reported twinning rate, calf sex ratio, stillbirth, and abortion rates in single and twin births. Overall, the reported twinning rate was 3.9%, and twinning increased with parity [1.1% for primiparous cows vs. 5.7% for cows in their fourth or greater lactation; odds ratio (OR) = 5.50]. Regardless of parity, the greatest twinning rate was observed when conception occurred in fall season from September to December (OR = 1.17). Calf stillbirth was greater after twin births, with 18.8% of twin calving events resulting in one or both calves as stillborn, compared with 4.0% for singleton births (OR = 7.58). Calf stillbirth for multiparous cows was 2.9% for single births and 18.0% for twin births (OR = 7.08), whereas for primiparous cows, stillbirth was 6.6% for singletons and 27.7% for twins (OR = 5.85). Calf sex ratios (male, M; female, F) were 52.4% M and 47.6% F for singleton calves and 28.2% MM, 48.9% MF, and 22.9% FF for twin calves. The mean abortion rate was 13.4%, with 13.8% for single births and 4.2% for twin births (OR = 1.22). Abortion rate for multiparous cows was 15.9% for single births and 4.0% for twin births (OR = 4.31), whereas for primiparous cows, abortion rate was 9.4% for single births and 5.4% for twin births (OR = 1.89). Although milk production, as a causative factor associated with twinning, increased in recent years, twinning rate decreased over the years.

Our objective was to characterize the current reproductive performance and factors which may be related to it in the Fars province dairy herds in southern Iran. We collected retrospective data from four commercial herds in the region. All 256 cows with history of calving between 21 March 2004 and 20 March 2005 were followed until subsequent pregnancy, culling or death. Effects of risk factors on days open were investigated in a Cox proportional-hazards model. The overall median calving interval, dry period and days open were 388, 68, and 120 days, respectively. First-service conception risk and overall-service conception risk were 45 and 42%, respectively. Average numbers of insemination per pregnant and all cows were 2 and 2.1, respectively. Cows without incidence of any disorder during the lactation (but before conception, and including metabolic disorders) had 2.1-times greater hazard of conception than cows with incidence of disease. No significant association between calving interval, dry period, parity of dam, and sex and weight of calves with days open was observed.

Data set included records of 43303 cows for first lactation. Records were collected from 2000 to 2006 in Animal Breeding Center of Iran Studied traits were yield of milk, fat, protein and percentage of fat and protein. Total number of animal was 197561 individual in pedigree. Genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated with REML method under single trait Animal Model. Breeding values were predicted with BLUP procedure. The model for the analyses included the factors herd-year-season as fixed factor (1694 levels), animal as random effect and age at calving as co variable with minimum and maximum of 23 and 36 month. Respectively the estimated heritabilities were 0.35 (+/-0.02), 0.33 (+/-0.02), 0.31 (+/-0.017), 0.28 (+/-0.02), 0.27 (+/-0.016) for milk, fat, protein yield, percent of fat and protein. Mean of breeding values of sires were 180.2 (+/-28.2), 3.7 (+/-1.26), 2.3 (+/-1.06), -0.036 (+/-0.014) and -0.028 (+/-0.009) for milk, fat, protein yield, percent of fat and protein, respectively.

Production and pedigree data of Iranian Holsteins were collected from 1991 to the end of 2001 on 45 herds in Isfahan province. Data on culled cows (birth and culling dates) were used to estimate the effect of age at first calving on total lifetime and productive life; and the effect of age at first calving on first-lactation yields was estimated from corrected (2x 305 d) first-lactation records of 12,082 dairy heifers that calved between 1995 and 2001. The estimate of heritability of age at first calving obtained in this study was 0.086. This low heritability indicates the importance of using available information on relatives for selection on this trait. Age at first calving significantly affected all the traits investigated, including: milk yield, fat yield, fat percentage, lifetime, and productive life. Results indicated a positive effect of reducing age at first calving on milk yield and productive life, although reducing age at first calving to 21 mo of age had a negative effect on yields of milk and milk fat. Lifetime did not show a similar trend with age at first calving. However, a slight positive phenotypic correlation (0.052) was detected between age at first calving and lifetime. We conclude that due to negative effects of age at first calving on productive life and because of optimum age at first calving for milk yield was 24 mo in this study, the reduction of age at first calving to 24 mo of age could be an effective management practice.

Heat mount detectors were applied in a large Iranian dairy herd in an attempt to appraise their value for fertility improvement. A total of 100 cows with a recorded anoestrous period of at least 60 days were selected, 69 of them suffering from suboestrus or silent heat and 31 from true anoestrus due to inactive ovaries. The results indicate that inaccurate observation of heat is a major limiting factor in the reproductive performance of this herd and that heat detectors could be a valuable tool for improvement of oestrus detection and consequent reduction of the interval from calving to conception.
