- Abstract
Activities and accomplishments (including the role of the Army) in Iran's national literacy campaign are reviewed and evaluated from the first pilot projects (1965) in Ghazvin and Shiraz, up to the latest 1970 statistics on student participation and completion. The system of provincial, urban, and district bodies under the National Committee for the World Literacy Campaign, is briefly described. Duties and qualifications for literacy teachers are given, followed by provisions for consultants, student recruitment, curriculum, textbooks, program administration, evaluation, and research. Important changes in program length and content are also covered, including basic books for special groups (rural, urban, linguistic minorities) and reading matter for new literates. Publications, regional seminars, program evaluation, and other services rendered by the National Committee are traced from September 1968 to September 1970. (LY)
