Background and aims: This study set out to examine the stiffness of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and Achilles tendon across postmenopausal women with osteosarcopenia (OS), osteoporosis (OP), and normal bone mineral density. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between muscle-tendon stiffness and postural sway during a curve-tracking task in both sagittal (AP) and frontal (ML) planes. Methods: Seventy-three women volunteered to participate in this study. The participants were classified into OS (T-score ≤ − 2.5 and muscle mass below 5.5 kg/m2), OP (T-score ≤ − 2.5), and healthy (T-score >-1) groups. The shear wave elastography was used to determine GM and Achilles tendon stiffness during rest and activation. The postural sway was recorded using a force plate during the performance-based curve tracking (CT) task. Results: The stiffness of the GM and Achilles tendon was found to be significantly lower in the OS group compared to the OP and healthy groups (P < 0.05). In the CT task, the OS group exhibited a significant decrease in the mean absolute (P = 0.011) and RMS error (P = 0.022) in the ML direction compared to the OP group. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between the ML mean absolute error and both GM and Achilles's stiffness during rest and activation (P < 0.05). Discussion and conclusion: The OS group exhibited the lowest muscle-tendon stiffness. The GM and Achilles stiffness was positively correlated with poor performance-based balance, particularly in the ML direction. Background: It has been documented that old age and chronic diseases are associated with poor prognosis and mortality among COVID-19 patients. Osteosarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome with a considerable prevalence which increases morbidity and mortality. This study investigated the relationship between COVID-19 mortality and osteosarcopenia and its parameters in-hospitalized patients in Bushehr, Iran. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, participants of the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program who were hospitalized due to COVID-19 between 1st March 2020 and 23rd September 2021 were assessed. Osteosarcopenia was considered as the presence of both osteopenia/osteoporosis and sarcopenia. We used the Cox proportional hazards model to identify the association between oteosarcopenia and the risk of COVID-mortality in 2442 person-days. Results: Among 4173 participants,297 patients were in-hospitalized due to COVID-19. We found that 80(26.94%) patients expired due to COVID-19 during the follow-up period. Osteosarcopenia and its parameters were more prevalent in patients who expired. The incidence rate of mortality among osteosarcopenic patients was 5.04(3.43– 7.40) per 100 person-days. In the Cox proportional hazards models, osteosarcopenia and its parameters increase the risk of COVID-mortality [Osteosarcopenia: HRadjusment:1.73(1.00-3.01), sarcopenia: HRadjusment:1.72(1.00-2.99), Osteoporosis: HRadjusment:2.67(1.53–4.67), Low muscle mass: HRadjusment:1.90(1.05–3.46), low muscle strength: HRadjusment:1.80(1.03–3.16), and low gait speed: HRadj:2.39(1.31–4.38). The ORs of ICU admission and use of invasive mechanical ventilation among osteosarcopenic patients and its parameters were higher than those without it. Conclusions: This study identified the impact of osteosarcopenia and its parameters on the mortality of in-hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Background: Sarcopenia is an important disease that needs attention in the world. The aim of this paper was to quantify the trend of sarcopenia's scientific publications of EMRI (Endocrinology & Metabolism Research Institute, Iran). Methods: All studies and scientific articles on sarcopenia which were affiliated to EMRI and its research centers have been recruited in this review through an inclusive search in web of science until 20th December 2019. The number of documents, publication year, main journals, citations, subject area and co-authorship network of authors were assessed. Results: Totally, 28 documents from EMRI were related to sarcopenia and indexed in the web of science. The number of documents showed an increasing trend. Most publications were "meeting abstract" at prestigious congresses. The top subject area were "epidemiology" and "association with other diseases". The highest cited article was a systematic review study, and the top source was "Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders" Journal. Conclusion: EMRI provides an appropriate face of sarcopenia publications in the world. However, there is a need for more effort in other subject areas of sarcopenia, this study would be helpful for Iranian researchers to conduct better research in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We designed to evaluate the effects of resistance elastic band exercises (REBEs) on cardiometabolic/obesity-related biomarkers in older females with osteosarcopenic obesity. Sixty-three patients (aged 65–80 years) with osteosarcopenic obesity and a body mass index exceeding 30 kg/m2 were enrolled in the study. The participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (REBE, n = 32) or a usual care group (n = 31). The experimental group completed a 12-week REBE program, three times a week and 60 min per session. There were decreases in lipid accumulation product (p =.033), visceral adipose index (p =.001), triglyceride-glucose-body mass index (p =.034), and atherogenic index of plasma (p =.028) in the experimental group compared with the usual care group. Our findings highlight the importance of an REBE program in improving combined cardiometabolic/obesity-related indices in older women with osteosarcopenic obesity. The incorporation of an REBE program may benefit individuals who are unable to tolerate or participate in more strenuous exercise programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sarcopenia, characterized by reduced muscle strength and mass, is commonly observed in patients with kidney disease. This study aimed to investigate the factors that influence sarcopenia in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD patients). Materials and Methods: A case-control study was conducted from 2022 to 2023, involving a total of 137 HD patients receiving regular dialysis. Relevant data were collected, and based on diagnostic criteria, patients were classified into sarcopenia and nonsarcopenia groups. All patients received polysulfone membrane HD at a flow rate of 500 mL/min. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to evaluate phase angle (PhA), muscle volume, and body composition. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia among maintenance HD patients was found to be 40.14%. There was a higher proportion of women (76.36%) with sarcopenia compared to men (P < 0.001). Furthermore, a significant difference was observed in PhA (P < 0.006) between patients undergoing maintenance HD with and without sarcopenia. PhA was positively associated with body mass index, body cell mass, basal metabolic rate, fat-free mass, soft lean mass, and minerals, whereas age and skeletal muscle index showed an inverse significant correlation. Conclusion: Sarcopenia, a condition associated with increased mortality risk, affects a considerable proportion of dialysis patients. It is imperative to urgently identify and develop preventive and therapeutic strategies to counteract the detrimental effects of sarcopenia on the health outcomes of kidney patients. Aim: The purpose of this retrospective single-center study was to determine the frequency of sarcopenia and its association with mortality and other morbidities in children with chronic liver disease who had undergone liver transplantation. Background: Sarcopenia, a muscle-wasting syndrome, is common in patients with advanced liver disease and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. While sarcopenia in adults has been extensively studied, there is little information in this regard about children and adolescents with chronic liver diseases. Methods: The study included 108 children and adolescents who had undergone liver transplantation. Sarcopenia was measured using skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebral level and assessed using abdominal computed tomography imaging. Results: The frequency of sarcopenia in the studied population was found to be 45.7%. Patients with sarcopenia were more likely to be male (P<0.0001), older (P<0.0001), and had lower height-for-age z-scores (P=0.012). Genetic/metabolic diseases were the most common underlying cause of sarcopenia in children. Except for a higher rate of transplant rejection in the sarcopenia group (P=0.035), there was no significant difference in mortality rates (P=0.688) or post-LT complications between the two groups. One year after LT, computed tomography-derived body composition parameters revealed no significant differences between children who survived and those who did not. Conclusion: Our findings indicated a high frequency of sarcopenia in children with chronic liver disease, implying that more research is needed to better understand its impact on clinical outcomes in this population. Background: The relationship between sarcopenia and the consequences of COVID-19 is not yet fully understood. It is noteworthy that information about muscle status can be easily retrieved by segmenting specific regions of skeletal muscles on CT scans. Our aim in this study was to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and the consequences of COVID-19. Methods: In this analytical cross-sectional study, 338 patients with COVID-19 who had a positive PCR test for COVID-19 and underwent chest CT scan in Loghman-e-Hakim Hospital from July to September 2021 were evaluated. Age, sex, background diseases, mechanical ventilation, duration of hospitalization, as well as lab tests, ICU admission and mortality were extracted from patient records. The severity of COVID-19 disease and the area and density of paraspinal muscles at the level of T5 and T12 vertebrae were evaluated through chest CT scans. Results: Length of stay had significant relationship with T5 density (1.15 (< 0.001)) and T12 density (1.24 (< 0.001). The mean of T12 area (3.35 (P = 0.005) and T12 density 4.59 (P = 0.012) were significantly lower in ICU admitted. There was a significant relationship between mortality and age, cardiovascular disorders, COPD, underlying disease, length of stay, WBC and lymphocyte levels, as well as the severity of the disease. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, we can infer that the use of CT scan in patients with COVID-19 and the determination of muscle area and density can predict the consequences of COVID-19, such as a longer duration of hospitalization, the need for admission to the ICU, and mortality. Objectives: Identification the optimal management intervention of sarcopenia is a concern of health systems. We aimed to analyze the cost-effectiveness of sarcopenia management strategies in Iran. Methods: We constructed a lifetime Markov model based on natural history. The strategies comparedincluded exercise training, nutritional supplements, whole body vibration (WBV), and various exercise interventions and nutritional supplement combinations. A total of 7 strategies was evaluated in addition to the non-intervention strategy. Parameter values were extracted from primary data and the literature, and the costs and Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were calculated for each strategy. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analysis, including the expected value of perfect information (EVPI), was also performed to determine the robustness of the model. Analyses were performed using the 2020 version of TreeAge Pro software. Results: All seven strategies increased lifetime effectiveness (QALYs). The protein and Vitamin D3 (P + D) strategy had the highest effectiveness values among all strategies. After removing the dominated strategies, the estimated ICER for the P + D compared to Vitamin D3 alone (D) strategy was calculated as $131,229. Considering the cost-effectiveness threshold ($25,249), base-case results indicated that the D strategy was the most cost-effective strategy in this evaluation. Sensitivity analysis of model parameters also demonstrated the robustness of results. Also, EVPI was estimated at $273. Conclusions: Study results, as the first economic evaluation of sarcopenia management interventions, showed that despite the higher effectiveness of D + P, the D strategy was the most cost-effective. Considering the association of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with both osteoporosis and sarcopenia, this study aimed to explore the association between a newly developed CVD risk score and osteosarcopenia in the elderly population. Participants in the second phase of the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program were included. Osteosarcopenia was defined as having both osteopenia/osteoporosis and sarcopenia. The 10-year CVD risk score was estimated using the WHO lab-based model. The participants were considered as high-risk if the CVD risk was ≥ 20%. The estimated risks were compared in individuals with and without osteosarcopenia. The association of CVD risk and osteosarcopenia was investigated using a logistic regression model, adjusted by potential confounders. In all, 2392 participants (1161 men) with a mean age of 69.3 (± 6.3) years were studied and 532 [242 (45.5%) men] individuals were diagnosed with osteosarcopenia. The median (IQR) CVD risks were 0.340 (0.214) and 0.229 (0.128) in men with and without osteosarcopenia, respectively (P < 0.001); In women, the corresponding values were 0.260 (0.147) and 0.207 (0.128), respectively (P < 0.001). Adjusted by confounders, CVD risk ≥ 20% in women, increased the odds of osteosarcopenia by 72%. Body mass index showed an inverse association with osteosarcopenia in both men (0.81, 95%CI: 0.78–0.85) and women (0.66, 95%CI: 0.62–0.70). Considering the area under the ROC curve, the models showed a discriminative ability of 82% in men and 89% in women. This study displayed a significant association between WHO CVD risk score and osteosarcopenia. Due to the difficult diagnosis of osteosarcopenia, the high association of cardiovascular risk score with this disease can help identify high-risk individuals and refer them for further diagnostic procedures. Background: The sarcopenia quality of life (SarQoL)® questionnaire is a specific tool to measure QoL in sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to validate the SarQoL® questionnaire for evaluation of sarcopenia-related quality of life in Iranian community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Validity (discriminative power, construct validity), reliability (internal consistency, test–retest reliability), and floor/ceiling effects of SarQoL®questionnaire were evaluated in the current study. Moreover, the SarQoL® questionnaire was compared with the Short-Form 36-item (SF-36) and the EuroQoL 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaires. Results: Among 501 community-dwelling older adults, 128 elderly participants (including 88 sarcopenic individuals) were recruited for validation. Participants with sarcopenia had lower quality of life than non-sarcopenic individuals (Total Score: 39.37 ± 7.45 vs. 65.09 ± 7.85, p < 0.001). Also, the findings demonstrated a high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.881), excellent test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.995, 95% CI 0.990–0.998), and no floor/ceiling effect of SarQoL® questionnaire. Conclusion: This is the first study to confirm the reliability and validity of the Persian version of the SarQoL® for the measurement of quality of life among Iranian sarcopenic older adults. Background: Diabetes is a significant risk factor for sarcopenia, a muscle dystrophy affecting older individuals. Sarcopenia management typically involves resistance exercise and oral supplements. Given the limitations of resistance training for many elderly individuals, oral supplements play a crucial role in treatment. This study is a protocol for evaluating the efficacy of the Sarcomeal® supplement, a mixture of whey protein, creatine, branch-chained amino acids (BCAAs), glutamine, and hydroxyl-methyl-butyrate (HMB) in diabetic people who also have sarcopenia. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a randomized clinical trial, in which sixty diabetic sarcopenia patients who meet the inclusion criteria will be randomly assigned to the control or the intervention group with a 1:1 allocation. The intervention group will receive one Sarcomeal® supplement sachet plus 1000 IU of vitamin D daily and both groups will be recommended to consume protein-rich food, be educated about the disease, and perform light exercises for 12 weeks. Anthropometric measurements, body composition analysis, muscle strength assessments, and blood tests will be conducted at the trial's start and end., Discussion: It is hypothesized that the Sarcomeal® supplement plus vitamin D may be beneficial for the management of diabetic sarcopenia by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, and glucose metabolism. Background: The goal of this study is to clarify clinical, functional, and biochemical features of postmenopausal women who are at risk of developing osteosarcopenia.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study undertaken to investigate the co-accordance of osteoporosis and sarcopenia and common risk factors on 305 postmenopausal Iranian women. Sarcopenia and osteoporosis were defined based on the European Working Group on sarcopenia in Older People guidelines and WHO criteria, respectively. Confounding factors including age, menopausal age, obesity, sun exposure, physical activity, macronutrient composition, and calcium and vitamin D supplementations were considered for all participants. A multivariate model was used to consider the common risk factors of both disorders; osteoporosis and sarcopenia.Results: The mean age was 57.9 years ± 6.0 SD (range: 48-78 years) and 37.4% of patients were 60 years or older. Among all participants, 35.7% were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). Approximately 45% of all the study population had insufficient physical activity and at least half of participants had insufficient intake of protein. There was a significant correlation between bone density and muscle mass and basal metabolic rate (BMR) (p < 0.01). In multivariate-multivariable regression model, after Bonferroni correction for obesity, lower BMR was the only one associated with both lower muscle mass and bone density in lumbar and hip sites (p < 0.007).Conclusions: Our data suggest that low BMR might be an early predictor for concordance of osteoporosis and sarcopenia in postmenopausal women. Objective: Sarcopenia is linked to escalating health costs, heightened risk of physical disability, diminished quality of life and an increased demand for care services. This study aimed to assess the economic impact of sarcopenia-related disability in Iran. A prevalence-based economic burden study was conducted utilizing the Population Attributable Risk (PAR) method, based on 2022 price index. Prevalence data for sarcopenia, categorized by gender and disease severity, were extracted from recent comprehensive studies. The relative risk of sarcopenia disability was determined from the most robust available evidence. Subsequently, direct medical costs, direct non-medical costs, and indirect costs for each individual with sarcopenia were computed and adjusted to 2022 values to estimate disability costs., Results: Taking into account the prevalence of sarcopenia and the Iranian population across various age groups, 2,192,168 adults aged ≥ 60 years with sarcopenia in Iran were included. The total PAR of sarcopenia for men and women was estimated at 49% and 28%, respectively. The cumulative direct medical costs, direct non-medical costs, and indirect costs amounted to $215.1 million, $7.76 million, and $34.1 million, respectively. Background: Osteosarcopenia, defined as sarcopenia plus osteopenia/osteoporosis, may increase the risk of fractures and affects morbidity and mortality in the older population. Falling is also common in the elderly and increases the risk of fractures and mortality. We examined the association of cardio-metabolic risk factors with a history of falling in osteosarcopenic men.Methods: We used the baseline data of the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program. Osteosarcopenia was defined as having both sarcopenia (reduced skeletal muscle mass plus low physical performance and/or low muscle strength) and osteopenia/osteoporosis (T-score ≤ - 1.0). Falling was defined as a self-reported history of an unintentional down on the ground during the previous year before the study. We used logistic regression analysis to estimate the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) to quantify the associations.Results: All elderly men diagnosed with osteosarcopenia (n = 341), with a mean age of 73.3(±7.4) years, were included. Almost 50(14.7%) participants reported falling. Age showed a positive association with falling (AOR: 1.09, 95%CI: 1.04-1.14). An increase of 10 mmHg in systolic blood pressure(SBP), reduces the odds of falling by 26%(AOR:0.74, 95%CI:0.62-0.89), while a positive association was detected for fasting plasma glucose (FPG), as 10 mg/dl increase in the FPG, raises the chance of falling by 14%(AOR = 1.14, 95%CI:1.06,1.23). Hypertriglyceridemia was inversely associated with falling (AOR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.12, 0.89).Conclusions: Falling is a major public health problem in rapidly aging countries, especially in individuals with a higher risk of fragility fractures. Older age-raised fasting plasma glucose and low SBP are associated with falling in osteosarcopenic patients.  Considering the higher risk of fracture in osteosarcopenic men, comprehensive strategies are needed to prevent fall-related injuries in this high-risk population. Background and Objectives: Sarcopenia is an important age-related disease which can lead to an increased risk of mortality, falls, fractures, and poor quality of life. So, timely detection can be effective in reducing the burden of disease. The aim of this study was to identify the most cost-effective strategy for sarcopenia screening in Iran.Materials and Methods: We constructed a Markov transition model over a life-time horizon based on natural history. Compared strategies included Sarcopenia scoring assessment models (SarSA-Mod), European working group on sarcopenia in older people (EWGSOP), Mini sarcopenia risk assessment (MSRA) and SARC-F. Parameters values were extracted from primary data and the literature, and the costs and Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were calculated for each strategy. Sensitivity analysis of uncertain parameters was also performed to determine the robustness of the model. Analysis was performed using 2020 version of TreeAge Pro software.Results: All four screening strategies increased life time QALYs. After removing dominated strategy, the incremental cost per QALY gained for sarcopenia screening varied from $1875.67 for EWGSOP to $1898.33 for MSRA. Our base-case analysis showed that the most cost-effective strategy was EWGSOP and 2nd best was SarSA-Mod with $43,414.3 and $42,663.3 net monetary benefits given one GDP per capita ($5520.311) as willingness to pay, respectively. Sensitivity analysis of model parameters also showed robustness of results.Conclusions: The results of the study, as the first economic evaluation of sarcopenia screening, showed that the EWGSOP strategy is more cost-effective than other strategies. To evaluate the efficacy of daily consumption of fortified yogurt with beta-Hydroxy beta-Methyl Butyrate (HMB) and vitamins D and C on measures of sarcopenia, inflammation, and quality of life in sarcopenic older adults. In this 12-week randomized double-blind controlled trial, participants received either yogurt fortified with 3 g HMB, 1000 IU vitamin D, and 500 mg vitamin C in the intervention group (n = 33) or plain yogurt in the control group (n = 33). A total of 66 older adults with sarcopenia recruited from the community in Shiraz, Iran. Body composition, muscle strength, and functionality were measured using Dual-energy-X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), hydraulic handgrip dynamometer, and usual gait speed, respectively. Serum concentrations of vitamin D, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), malondialdehyde, and insulin were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was also evaluated using SF-12 questionnaire. Consumption of fortified yogurt was associated with improvement in handgrip strength [mean change (95% confidence interval) 4.36 (3.35–5.37) vs. 0.97 (−0.04 to 1.99)] and gait speed [0.10 (0.07–0.13) vs. 0.01 (0.00–0.04)] in the intervention group compared with the control group (P <.001). In addition, the results revealed a significant increase in vitamin D and IGF-1 levels in the intervention group (P <.001). The nutritional intervention significantly prevented any increase in the serum concentration of hs-CRP compared with the control group (P =.033). The results also showed a more significant decrease in the malondialdehyde level in the intervention group compared with the control (P =.008). Moreover, there were significant differences between the 2 groups regarding physical aspects of HRQoL (P =.035). A novel dairy product fortified with HMB, vitamin D, and vitamin C not only could enhance muscle strength and functionality, but also modulate anabolic and inflammatory conditions as well as quality of life. Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by structural abnormalities in nephrons, loss of functional nephrons, and impaired renal excretory function. A pro-vegetarian dietary pattern (PDP) is a gradual and progressive approach to vegetarianism. The current study aimed to assess the association between PDP and the odds of protein-energy wasting (PEW) and sarcopenia in patients with CKD., Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on kidney disease patients (n = 109) referred to two clinics in Shiraz, Iran. The diagnosis of sarcopenia and PEW was made according to the guidelines of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) and the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) criteria, respectively. The participants' dietary intake was evaluated using a 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). For PDP index calculation, plant and animal food sources were categorized into 12 subgroups. The association between sarcopenia and PEW with PDP was evaluated using logistic regression., Results: The PDP was significantly associated with a lower risk of PEW in the second tertile compared to the first in the crude model (odds ratio (OR) = 0.225; confidence interval (CI): 0.055-0.915; p-value = 0.037). After adjusting for potential confounders, lower significant odds of PEW were observed in the second and last tertiles of PDP compared to the first (T 2 : OR = 0.194; CI: 0.039-0.962; p-value = 0.045, and T 3 : OR = 0.168; CI: 0.030-0.950; p-value = 0.044). In contrast, no significant relationship was observed between PDP and the odds of sarcopenia (p-value ˃ 0.05)., Conclusions: Overall, the findings indicated that greater adherence to PDP was negatively associated with the odds of PEW. Using a system that incorporates a variety of food items rather than focusing on individual components can aid in assessing the inflammatory effects of a diet on disease outcomes such as chronic kidney disease (CKD). Therefore, we decided to investigate the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the risk of protein-energy wasting (PEW) and sarcopenia in patients with CKD. In this cross-sectional study, 109 patients with CKD were selected from two clinics in Shiraz, Iran. The intake of individuals' diets was recorded using a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Additionally, Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) guidelines were utilized to evaluate muscles' strength, mass, and function. Also, four International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) criteria (body mass index, intake of protein, albumin, and urine creatinine) were used  to diagnose PEW. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between DII and sarcopenia as well as PEW. The results showed that the intake of saturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids, niacin, beta-carotene, and vitamin C was significantly different between lower and higher DII groups. In the univariate model, higher odds of sarcopenia was observed by each unit increase in DII (odds ratio (OR) = 1.379, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.042-1.824) and age (OR = 1.073, 95% CI: 1.017-1.132). Additionally, in the multivariate model, the association between DII and age with odds of sarcopenia remained significant (DII: OR = 1.379, 95% CI: 1.030-1.846 and age: OR = 1.063, 95% CI: 1.007-1.121). The current study suggests the possible role of pro-inflammatory foods in worsening muscle health, specifically sarcopenia, in CKD patients. Purpose: Various risk factors are mentioned for osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia. Our aim is to assess the impacts of anti-diabetic drugs on these disorders., Methods: To perform this study, the participants' data was extracted from the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program in Iran. Afterward, the data were categorized into three subgroups: osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia, based on WHO and European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP-2) working group definitions. Demographic characteristics, anthropometric measures, past medical history, and current medications were recorded. Pearson chi-squared and simple/multiple logistic regression using Python (3.11.4) and R (4.3.1) programming software assessed the association between anti-diabetic agents and these bone disorders., Results: Out of 1995 participants, 820, 848, and 404 had osteoporosis, sarcopenia, or osteosarcopenia, respectively. Among all types of anti-diabetic drugs, a significant protective association between osteoporosis and consumption of second-generation sulfonylureas was found; Adjusted Odd Ratio (AOR) = 0.65 ([95% CI: 0.45-0.94], p-value = 0.023). No associations were found between sarcopenia and consumption of anti-diabetic agents. A significant association was observed between using Meglitinides and the risk of osteosarcopenia; AOR = 4.98 ([95% CI: 1.5-16.55], p-value = 0.009)., Conclusion: In conclusion, a protective association between consumption of second-generation sulfonylureas and osteoporosis was found. Osteosarcopenia is an increasingly recognized geriatric syndrome with a considerable prevalence which increases morbidity and mortality. Although osteosarcopenia is a result of age-related deterioration in muscle and bone, there are many risk factors that provoking osteosarcopenia. These risk factors should be considered by the clinicians to treat osteosarcopenia. We assessed the link between osteosarcopenia and conventional risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. This study was a cross-sectional study that has been conducted within the framework of Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program stage II in which participants aged ≥ 60 years were included. Osteopenia/osteoporosis was defined as a t-score ≤  - 1.0 standard deviation below the mean values of a young healthy adult. We defined sarcopenia as reduced skeletal muscle mass plus low muscle strength and/or low physical performance. Osteosarcopenia was considered as the presence of both osteopenia/osteoporosis and sarcopenia. We estimated the age-standardized prevalence of osteosarcopenia for men and women, separately. Using modified Poisson regression analysis, adjusted prevalence ratio (PR) with 95% CI was used to show the measure of associations in the final model. Among 2353 participants, 1205 (51.2%) were women. Age-standardized prevalence of osteosarcopenia was 33.8 (95% CI 31.0-36.5) in men and 33.9 (30.9-36.8) in women. In both sexes, the inverse association was detected with body mass index and having osteosarcopenia (PR 0.84, 95% CI 0.81-0.88 in men and 0.77, 95% CI 0.74-0.80 in women). In both sexes, high-fat mass was positively associated with osteosarcopenia [PR 1.46 (95% CI 1.11-1.92) in men, and 2.25 (95% CI 1.71-2.95) in women]. Physical activity had a significant inverse association in men (PR = 0.64, 95% CI 0.46, 0.88), but not in women. Diabetes was also showed a direct association with osteosarcopenia in men (PR 1.33, 95% CI 1.04-1.69). No associations were detected between the lipid profiles and osteosarcopenia. Results demonstrated a high prevalence of osteosarcopenia in both sexes suggesting a high disease burden in a rapidly aging country. Background: Sarcopenia is a progressive disease with age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function. No study has investigated the association between healthy beverage index (HBI) and sarcopenia in older adults. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between HBI and sarcopenia in Iranian older adults., Methods: In the present case-control study, 80 sarcopenic and 80 non-sarcopenic participants matched in sex were included. Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Handgrip strength (HGS), skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), and gait speed were utilized to confirm sarcopenia. Also, a food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate food intake. HBI score was calculated based on ten sub-components of the total beverages. Moreover, logistic regression was applied to assess the association between HBI and sarcopenia., Results: In the crude model, we observed no significant association between HBI and the odds of sarcopenia. Still, after adjusting the confounders, the odds of developing sarcopenia decreased significantly in the second and last tertiles (T) (T 2 - odds ratio (OR) = 0.04, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.01-0.25 and T 3 - OR = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.01-0.60)., Conclusions: Our findings indicated that HBI is inversely related to the chance of sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a progressive skeletal muscle disease in which oxidative stress has been proposed as one of the primary markers. The oxidative balance score (OBS) represents the oxidative balance of a person's dietary pattern using the merged intake of anti-oxidants and pro-oxidants. Therefore, the present study assessed the association between OBS and sarcopenia in Iranian older adults. In the current study, 80 people with sarcopenia and 80 without it were considered the case and control groups, respectively. All controls were matched by sex with cases. To confirm sarcopenia, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), handgrip strength (HGS) measurement, and gait speed were used. Also, body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess all participants' dietary intake of pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants. Conditional logistic regression was applied to assess the association between OBS and sarcopenia. In the bivariate model, we observed lower odds of sarcopenia in the second and last tertile of OBS in comparison to the first tertile (T) (T 2 - odds ratio (OR) = 0.414, 95% confidence interval (CI) : 0.186-0.918 and T 3 - OR = 0.101, 95% CI: 0.041-0.248). After adjusting for potential confounders, the association was not significant in second and last tertile of OBS in comparision to the first one. Background: Sarcopenia is a geriatric disease with adverse clinical outcomes, high rate of mortality and a major challenge to healthy elderly. This study aimed to undertake a survey to identify gaps and highlight strengths in sarcopenia research in order to progress research in this area for the next years in Iran. Methods: This study included all studies published from the beginning until the first of 2019 in national and international journals by Iranian authors conducted in the field of sarcopenia. The databases including MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science and SCOPUS were used as the sources of information. All relevant available academic studies, including review articles, original articles, case reports, conference abstracts, and letters were included in the analysis. Findings: A total of 48 articles obtained and then categorized into six groups. These groups were; about Pathophysiology, Epidemiology of sarcopenia, Screening of sarcopenia, Nutrition, Physical activity and Association of Sarcopenia and Other Diseases that briefly findings of each study had been described. These findings showed that the prevalence of sarcopenia was 16.5% to 32.5%, using different definitions. A study developed and validated a screening model for identifying people with sarcopenia. Lifestyle changes such as diet can be appropriate strategies for the prevention of sarcopenia and also, physical activity is considered to be one of the few effective strategies to improve sarcopenia and prevent its outcomes, especially if in combination with appropriate nutritional supplementation. Sarcopenia is associated with adverse outcomes and other serious areas such as metabolic disorders, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, nephrology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, other geriatric diseases (such as osteoporosis, etc) and death. Some studies about these areas have been done in Iran. Conclusions: By this study, we found that studies on sarcopenia, the gaps of sarcopenia research in Iran, and highlighted the research priorities for future works. Background: The effect of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been studied in some studies. The present study aimed to investigate the association between UPF consumption and the risk of protein-energy wasting (PEW) and sarcopenia in patients with CKD in the Iranian population., Methods: The current cross-sectional study included 110 patients with CKD referred to two clinics in Shiraz, Iran. The International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) criteria and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) guideline were considered for the diagnosis of PEW and sarcopenia, respectively. The valid semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to assess participants' dietary intake. The logistic regression was used to examine the association of UPFs with PEW and sarcopenia., Results: We observed no significant association between sarcopenia and PEW with UPFs in the crude model. After adjusting for confounders, we observed a significantly higher odds of sarcopenia in the upper versus lower median of UPF intake (odds ratio (OR) = 3.59, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-12.62, P = 0.046)., Conclusions: Our findings suggest a positive relationship between UPF intake and sarcopenia among CKD patients. Background: Sacopenia is a common problem in elderly with the adverse outcomes. The objective of this study was to estimate the peak appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and age of its attainment by sex among the Iranian population. Methods: A total of 691 men and women aged 18-94 years participated in this cross-sectional, population-based study in Bushehr, Iran. ASM was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Cutoff points for men and women were established considering two standard deviations (SDs) below the mean values of the skeletal muscle index (SMI) for young reference groups. The relationship between ASM and age was described by the second-degree regression models. Two SDs below the mean SMIs of reference groups were as cutoff values of low muscle mass in Iranian population. Results: The peak ASM values were 21.35 ± 0.12 Kg and 13.68 ± 0.10 Kg, and the age at peak ASM were 26 (24-28) years and 34 (33-35) years for men and women, respectively. Mean and SD of SMI in those ages were 7.01 ± 0.02 Kg/m2 and 5.44 ± 0.02 Kg/m2 among men and women, respectively. Calculated cutoff values of low muscle mass among the Iranian population were 7.0 Kg/m2 and 5.4 Kg/m2 among men and women, respectively. Conclusions: Iranian reference values of SMI for both genders were similar to Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia recommendation and lower than the United States and European values. Further studies from different nations and the Middle East countries are needed to obtain reference values for populations, enabling the researchers for comparison and also more valid reports on sarcopenia prevalence. Osteosarcopenic obesity is a new syndrome that has been recently discussed in the scientific community. It is a condition that affects the elderly and involves the loss of bone, muscle, and fat tissue. The few studies that have been done on this disease showed that it has a high prevalence among the elderly and can cause various complications. This study was the first one to investigate this syndrome in Iran, and found that its prevalence was 19.83%., Background: Osteosarcopenic obesity syndrome (OSO) is a condition that involves osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity. It leads to a reduction in the quality of life of the elderly and an increase in hospitalization which has attracted the attention of physicians. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of osteosarcopenic obesity in people over 60 years of age in Bushehr., Materials and Methods: We used data from the Bushehr study, which included 2426 participants aged ≥ 60 years. We assessed osteoporosis/osteopenia based on T-score; sarcopenia based on hand grip strength, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), and walking speed; and obesity based on fat mass and BMI for diagnosing OSO. We first examined the factors related to OSO in the univariable analysis and then fitted the multiple logistic regression model, separately for women and men. The result was summarized as adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval., Results: In total, 2339 elderly were examined in our study, of which 464 elderly were suffering from osteosarcopenic obesity. The standardized prevalence of OSO was 23.66% (95% CI: 21.15-26.16) in women and 18.53% (95% CI 16.35-20.87) in men. Age was positively linked to osteosarcopenic obesity in both genders and so was diabetes in men. However, education, physical activity, and protein intake were negatively linked to osteosarcopenic obesity in both genders, as well as hypertriglyceridemia and hypertension in women., Conclusion: The prevalence of OSO among men and women of Bushehr city is high and is related to increasing age, low levels of education, physical activity, and protein intake among women and men., (© 2023. Background Sarcopenia, an age- related loss of muscle mass, is a significant associating factor for functional impairment among older adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and associated factors for sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia among older adults in Iran. Methods A total of 300 individuals aged over 55 years were randomly selected from the 6th district of Tehran, Iran, in 2011. Sarcopenia was defined according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) algorithm. The skeletal muscle mass was assessed using DXA. Muscle strength and muscle performance were assessed according to hand grip strength and 4-m usual walking gait speed test. A logistic regression analysis was performed. Results The prevalence values of presarcopenia, sarcopenia, and severe sarcopenia were 52.7%, 20.7%, and 6%, in men and 25.3%, 15.3%, and 5.3% in women, respectively. The prevalence of sarcopenia was higher in men older than 75 years than women in the same age range (36.7% versus 20%, respectively). Using multiple logistic regression models, age, sex, smoking, and body mass index (BMI) were independently associated with different stages of sarcopenia. Conclusions The prevalence of sarcopenia is high in Iranian older adults. Background: The sarcopenia quality of life (SarQoL) ® questionnaire is a specific tool to measure QoL in sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to validate the SarQoL ® questionnaire for evaluation of sarcopenia-related quality of life in Iranian community-dwelling older adults., Methods: Validity (discriminative power, construct validity), reliability (internal consistency, test-retest reliability), and floor/ceiling effects of SarQoL ® questionnaire were evaluated in the current study. Moreover, the SarQoL ® questionnaire was compared with the Short-Form 36-item (SF-36) and the EuroQoL 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaires., Results: Among 501 community-dwelling older adults, 128 elderly participants (including 88 sarcopenic individuals) were recruited for validation. Participants with sarcopenia had lower quality of life than non-sarcopenic individuals (Total Score: 39.37 ± 7.45 vs. 65.09 ± 7.85, p < 0.001). Also, the findings demonstrated a high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.881), excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.995, 95% CI 0.990-0.998), and no floor/ceiling effect of SarQoL ® questionnaire., Conclusion: This is the first study to confirm the reliability and validity of the Persian version of the SarQoL ® for the measurement of quality of life among Iranian sarcopenic older adults., (© 2022. Objectives: Sarcopenia is associated with frailty and disability among the elderly and imposes significant costs on health care systems. We tested whether adherence to a particular dietary pattern was associated with sarcopenia among the elderly in a district of Tehran, Iran. Methods: We used a semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess the dietary intake of 300 randomly-selected elderly men and women (at least 55 y old) living in the sixth district of Tehran; and the dietary patterns of the subjects were obtained using principal component analysis. We performed a logistic regression to measure the effect of adherence to each dietary pattern on the odds of sarcopenia. Results: Subjects in the highest tertile of the Mediterranean dietary pattern, characterized by a higher consumption of olive oil, fruits, vegetables, fish, and nuts, had a lower odds ratio for sarcopenia than those in the lowest tertile (OR = 0.42; 95% CI = 0.18-0.97; P for trend = 0.04). In contrast, adherence to the Western dietary pattern, characterized by a high consumption of sugar, soy, and fast foods, was not associated with sarcopenia (OR = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.21-1.24; P for trend = 0.13). Similarly, adherence to the Mixed dietary pattern, characterized by a high consumption of animal proteins, potatoes, and refined grains, did not affect the odds of sarcopenia (OR = 1.45; 95% CI = 0.66-3.19; P for trend = 0.95). Background: This paper presents the protocol of the 4 th round of Iranian Multi-center Osteoporosis Study (IMOS), a national survey with the primary objective of estimating the prevalence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia and their risk factors in a representative sample of urban and rural populations., Methods: The target population of the survey is all individuals ≥ 50 years in Iran. A multi-stage random sampling method has been used in the study. We stratified the 31 provinces of the country into 5 strata based on the distribution of their potential risk factors for osteoporosis and randomly selected one or two provinces from each stratum. Then, we invited 2530 people aged ≥ 50 years recruited in the 8 th National Survey of None Communicable Diseases (NCD) Risk Factors (STEPs-2021) in the selected provinces to participate in IMOS. Body composition measurements including bone mineral density, muscle mass, and fat mass are measured through Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) method using HOLOGIC (Discovery and Horizon) devices; and Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) is measured on the DXA scans using iNsight software. Anthropometric measurement and physical examinations are made by a trained nurses and other required information are collected through face-to-face interviews made by trained nurses. Laboratory measurements are made in a central lab. The prevalence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia will be estimated after applying sampling design, non-response, and post-stratification weights to the data., Discussion: IMOS will provide valuable information on the prevalence and determinants of osteoporosis and sarcopenia at the national level, and the results can be used in evaluating health system interventions and policymaking in the field of musculoskeletal diseases., (© 2022. Sarcopenia is age-related, pathophysiological muscle atrophy. Research regarding nutrition treatment of sarcopenia has developed rapidly, particularly as populations age. We evaluated the development of trends in this field using a bibliometric analysis. Articles up to July 2022 were searched in the Scopus database. Bibliographic information from the selected publications, such as countries, citations, world maps, institutions, authors, journals, and keywords, were converted and analyzed automatically using the "bibliometrix" package in R environment (version 4.2.0). We identified 368 Scopus articles from 1998-2021. According to citation analyses, 27 documents received more than 100 citations. Bibliometric analysis based on the literature included in this study revealed that South Korea (61 publications), United States (50), Japan (35), China (30), and Italy (20) contributed the most publications. Tehran University of Medical Science (19 records, 2.55% of articles) contributed the most publications. The most productive author was Landi, with eight articles (2.17% of articles). The publications were located in 196 journals, with Nutrients having the most publications (30, 8.15% of articles). The curves representing keywords "sarcopenia" and "aged" were the most apparent. Our analysis suggested that global nutrition and sarcopenia-related research increased rapidly from 2001 to 2021, demonstrating that this was a promising area of future research that could benefit from continued advances. Future research may focus on the effects of age and sex as well as intervention effectiveness, particularly exercise and nutrition supplementation.

Background: Sarcopenia refers to an age-related loss of skeletal muscle content, strength, and function, leading to a decrease in mobility. Obesity may exacerbate age-related complications such as sarcopenia through inflammatory pathways. In addition, intestinal dysbiosis has been proposed as an emerging contributor to sarcopenia due to the stimulation of the immune system and elevated barrier permeability of the intestine. Targeting microbiome with synbiotic and vitamin D supplementation may modulate the microbiome followed by the enhancement of sarcopenia indices. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the effect of synbiotic supplementation with or without vitamin D on the intestinal microbiome and its relationship with strength, muscle function, and body composition in middle-aged overweight and obese women., Methods: This multi-factorial, double-blind, randomized controlled trial will be conducted on 88 participants in eight weeks. The participants will be allocated into four groups receiving vitamin D placebo (weekly) and synbiotic placebo (daily), vitamin D and synbiotic placebo, vitamin D placebo and symbiotic, and vitamin D and synbiotic. Intestinal microbiome assessment will be done by DNA isolation and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, anthropometric indices, body composition, muscle strength, and physical performance will be evaluated by standard methods. All measurements will be made at the beginning and end of the study., Discussion: The previous studies showed that probiotics were involved in reducing inflammation, insulin sensitivity, modulation of atrophy markers such as atherogen-1, and decreasing reactive oxygen indices. In addition, vitamin D was found to improve the intestinal microbiome and facilitate muscle anabolism. Background: Sarcopenia is a progressive age-related skeletal muscle disorder associated with harmful impacts on health. The present study aimed to investigate the relation between sarcopenia, platelet (PLT), white blood cell (WBC), and PLT to WBC ratio (PWR) due to the importance of early sarcopenia diagnosis., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted based on the second stage of the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) Program. Sarcopenia was defined based on the revised edition of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) in accordance with the Iranian cut-off point. Univariate and adjusted multivariate logistic regression and linear regression were used to evaluate the associations., Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia among participants was 35.73%. PLT count and PWR were statistically higher in severe sarcopenic participants, while no differences were seen in WBC. In crude analysis, sarcopenia was not associated with quartiles of PLT, WBC, and PWR, while after adjusting for age, marital status, and sex, the association was seen in the fourth quartile of PLT and PWR [OR (95%CI) = 1.40 (1.08 to 1.81), p-value = 0.009 for PLT; OR (95%CI) =1.55 (1.20 to 2.00), p-value =0.001 for PWR]. This association remained significant in the fully adjusted model [OR (95%CI) =1.82 (1.20 to 2.78), p-value =0.005 for PLT; OR (95%CI) =1.57 (1.03 to 2.40), p-value =0.035 for PWR]. Among sarcopenia parameters, PLT count was more likely to be associated with handgrip strength and muscle mass. After stratifying the participants by gender, sarcopenia parameters were no longer statistically significant in men., Conclusion: This study showed that PLT and PWR were associated with sarcopenia after considering confounding factors, while this association was not seen in WBC. Background: Sarcopenia is described as age-related progressive skeletal muscle failure that results in marked reduction in the patient's independence and life quality. In this study, we explored the association of TP53 exon 4 Arg72pro (rs1042522) and Intron 3 16-bp Del/Ins (rs17878362) polymorphisms and their haplotypes with sarcopenia, anthropometric, body composition and biochemical parameters., Methods: A total of 254 older individuals (65 sarcopenic and 189 healthy) were recruited in this research and genotyped by PCR-RFLP. Linear regression was applied to find the correlation between TP53 polymorphism, and biochemical and anthropometric parameters. The correlation between TP53 polymorphism and haplotypes and the risk of sarcopenia was investigated by logistic regression., Results: Arg/Pro genotype carriers was at a lower (OR adj  = 0.175, 95% CI = 0.068 - 0.447; P < 0.001) risk of sarcopenia compared to the Arg/Arg group. In haplotypes analysis, Arg-Ins (OR adj : 0.484, 95% CI = 0.231 - 1.011, P = 0.043) and Pro-Ins (OR adj : 0.473, 95% CI = 0.210 - 1.068, P = 0.022) haplotypes showed decreased risk of developing sarcopenia. Moreover, in the case of codon 72 polymorphism, skeletal muscle mass, appendicular lean mass (ALM), skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), hand grip strength and Triglycerides, for Intron 3 16-bp Del/Ins polymorphism, albumin, calcium, cholesterol, and LDL were different, and for the haplotypes, skeletal muscle mass, SMI, ALM, HDL and triglycerides were significantly different between groups., Conclusions: We suggested that the Arg/Pro genotype of the codon 72 polymorphism in exon 4 of TP53, and Arginine-Insertion and Proline-Insertion haplotypes might decrease the risk of sarcopenia in Iranian older adults., (© 2022. Background and Aims: Hypertension may lead to disability and death by increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, and dementia. This study aimed to determine the association between obesity, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity, and hypertension in adults resident in Ravansar, a city in the west of Iran., Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 4,021 subjects from the baseline data of the Ravansar Non-Communicable Disease (RaNCD) cohort study, in the west region of Iran, from October 2014 up to February 2017. Body composition was categorized into obese, sarcopenia, sarcopenic obese, and normal based on measurements of muscle strength, skeletal muscle mass, and waist circumference. Univariate and multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the relationships, using the STATA 15 software., Results: The mean age of the participant was 47.9 years (SD: 8.4), the body mass index (BMI) was 26.84 kg/m 2 (SD: 4.44), and the prevalence of hypertension was 15.12%. The prevalence of obesity, sarcopenia, and sarcopenic obesity were 24.37, 22.01, and 6.91%, respectively. Body composition groups had significant differences in age, total calorie intake, BMI, skeletal muscle mass, and muscle strength ( P -value ≤ 0.001). In crude model, the obese (OR = 2.64; 95% CI: 2.11-3.30), sarcopenic (OR = 2.45; 95% CI: 1.94-3.08), and sarcopenic obese (OR = 3.83; 95% CI: 2.81-5.22) groups had a higher odds of hypertension. However, in adjusted models, only the obese group had a higher likelihood of hypertension (OR = 2.18; 95% CI: 1.70-2.80)., Conclusion: This study showed that obesity was associated with hypertension, whereas sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity had no significant relationship with hypertension., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest. Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterised by a concomitant high fat mass (FM) and low fat free mass (FFM) leading to an increased cardio-metabolic risk. This analysis aims to estimate the SO prevalence in Iranian adults and evaluate the association of SO with metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk. This cross-sectional analysis included 4296 subjects (age 35-70 years, 55.2% females). Body composition parameters, measured by bioelectrical impedance included: FM, FFM, appendicular lean mass (ALM) and skeletal mass index. SO was classified according to five criteria: (1) FM%-SMI; (2) FM%-ALM/% weight (wt%); (3) FM%-ALM/body mass index (BMI); (4) Residuals of ALM and FM and (5) FM/FFM Ratio. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to explore the association between SO models with MetS risk stratified by gender. Receiving operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to identify the best FM/FFM ratio cut-off value for detecting MetS cases in males and females. The prevalence of SO varied between 4% and 26% depending upon the classification method. The prevalence of MetS was 12.8% and 31.6% in males and females, respectively. SO models based on ALM/wt% and FM/FFM ratio showed the strongest association with MetS risk in males (OR: 11.5, 95%CI: 7.5-17.7, p < 0.001 and OR: 10.1, 95%CI: 6.9-14.7, p < 0.001, respectively) and females (OR: 4.1, 95%CI: 3.0-5.6, p < 0.001 and OR: 4.6, 95%CI: 3.5-5.9, p < 0.001, respectively). Background: Aging and obesity are the two major global health concerns. Sarcopenia, an age-linked disease, wherein a progressive loss of muscle volume, muscle strength, and physical activity occurs. In this study we evaluated the association of TP53 rs1625895 polymorphism with the susceptibility to sarcopenic obesity in Iranian old-age subjects., Methods: Total of 176 old individuals (45 sarcopenic and 131 healthy) were recruited in this research and genotyped by PCR-RFLP. BMI, Skeletal Muscle Mass Index, body composition, Handgrip Strength, Gait Speed (GS), and biochemical parameters were measured. Chi-square test was done for genotypes and alleles frequency. Linear regression was applied to find the correlation between TP53 rs1625895 polymorphism, and biochemical and anthropometric parameters. The correlation between TP53 rs1625895 and the risk of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity was investigated by logistic regression., Results: G allele was significantly higher in sarcopenic obesity group [P = 0.037, OR (CI 95%) = 1.9 (1.03-3.5)] compared to A allele. BMI (P = 0.049) and LDL (P = 0.04) were significantly differed between genotypes when GG was compared to AA/AG genotype. The results revealed when GG genotype compared to AA/AG genotype in adjusted model for age, the risk of sarcopenic obesity [P value = 0.011, OR (CI 95%); 2.72 (1.25-5.91)] increased. Similarly, GG/AG genotype increased the risk of sarcopenic obesity [P value = 0.028, OR (CI 95%); 2.43 (1.10-5.36)] in adjusted model for age compared to AA genotype., Conclusions: We suggested that TP53 rs1625895 polymorphism may increase the risk of sarcopenic obesity in Iranian population.

Background: Sarcopenia is defined as the old age syndrome characterized by profound decline in muscle mass and function. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia and its risk factors in older adults., Methods: Totally, 501 older people aged 65 years and older were recruited. Sarcopenia was defined according to the criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). For obtaining Skeletal Muscle mass Index (SMI), body composition was evaluated using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Muscle strength and physical performance were measured by Handgrip Strength (HGS) and Gait Speed (GS), respectively. Nutritional status, physical activity level, and biochemical indicators were assessed, as well., Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 20.8%. Multiple logistic regression models of the predictors of decline in the components of sarcopenia showed that older age, low Body Mass Index (BMI), and serum albumin level were associated with a higher risk of low SMI. Low serum albumin level and older age were also predictive of low HGS. Besides, old age, high body fat mass, and low BMI were the risk factors of low GS. Conversely, increased Calf Circumference (CC) was protective against low SMI and GS. Finally, older age, male gender, low BMI, decreased mini-nutritional assessment score, low serum albumin level, and high body fat were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia, whereas higher CC reduced its risk., Conclusion: The prevalence of sarcopenia is high among elderly individuals. This study underlined that sarcopenia might develop in older adults with impaired nutritional status and high body fat mass.
