Introduction: In Ireland, people seeking asylum (displaced people) receive accommodation in a system called “Direct Provision” (DP) while they wait for their applications for protection to be processed. The living conditions of DP have been described as illegal and inhumane by national and international human rights groups, and the system exacerbates the social exclusion of displaced people. Community responses to DP by displaced people and resident/nationals of Ireland include the creation of informal groups called community solidarity initiatives (CSI), through which cross-group friendships are forged by participation in shared cultural activities. We hypothesized that, compared to non-CSI participants, participants of CSI would report more cross-group friendships, and that more cross-group friendships would predict stronger collective action intentions to support the campaign to end DP, especially among resident/nationals. Methods: We recruited residents/nationals and displaced persons with and without CSI experience to complete a self-report questionnaire (n = 199), measuring cross-group friendship, collective action intentions, and intergroup attitudes. Data were collected between July 2020 and March 2021, using a combination of online and paper surveys. We conducted ANOVA and conditional process analyses on the data to test our hypotheses. Results: As predicted, CSI participants reported more contact with cross-group friends and stronger collective action intentions than non-participators. Conditional process analysis indicated that CSI participation facilitated resident/nationals’ political solidarity with displaced people through cross-group friendship. Discussion: Findings identify the role of group membership in the relationship between contact and collective action for migrant justice, illustrating the potential of CSI to bolster intergroup solidarity and social cohesion through shared activities and cross-group friendship. As such, findings make an important contribution to the literature on intergroup contact, solidarity, and social cohesion, and will be relevant for community practitioners, civil society organisations, NGOs, and policy makers. Although Housing First (HF) has gained widespread support as a service model to end homelessness, staircase services (SS) continue to proliferate. Critics have argued that SS contribute to institutionalisation and neglect the structural causes of homelessness. However, HF employs an empowerment‐orientated approach which can reduce institutionalisation and enable service users to achieve their potential. In this study, we combined a conceptual framework of empowering service features with the capabilities approach to compare the experiences of service users in HF and SS in Ireland. We carried out four focus group discussions with service users in HF (n = 7) and SS (n = 8). Using thematic analysis, we identified three themes that represented participants' descriptions of services: support orientation, home is more than shelter and organisational and political participation. Autonomy‐orientated support and an emphasis on service user choice and housing afforded HF service users' empowering experiences. The authoritarian approach, and emphasis on housing readiness and provider expertise undermined SS service users' empowering experiences. Findings suggest how HF and SS service features shape service users' lived experiences and perceptions of services. Implications for policy and practice are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Ireland, displaced people experience segregation, discrimination, and disempowering regulations within the Direct Provision system. Community solidarity initiatives (CSI) aim to address the segregation and discrimination displaced people face through collaborative contact with residents/nationals of Ireland. However, asymmetric power relations mean that residents/nationals and displaced people are likely to experience intergroup contact differently, which has implications for identity negotiation. We investigated how displaced people and residents/nationals negotiated their identities and oriented to social representations in talk about their experiences of a CSI in the West of Ireland. We interviewed 17 displaced people and residents/nationals and conducted a thematic analysis, informed by Social Identity Approach and Social Representations Theory. Then, we applied a discursive approach to understand how participants constructed social identities and social representations. Our analysis produced two main themes: 'Identity negotiation strategies in talk about intergroup contact' and 'Understanding and orienting to intergroup boundaries'. We found that residents/nationals and displaced people negotiated their identities to maintain positive identification in relation to negative social representations about their groups. Participants also oriented to shared group representations in their talk , which has implications for the development of political solidarity between residents/nationals and displaced people. Service innovation for adults experiencing mental illness and homelessness typically involves shifting from treatment-led, staircase models toward recovery-oriented, Housing-First models. Aligning frontline service providers' values to those embedded within newer models is an important, but under-investigated, influence on the innovation process. To assess values alignment in this context, we conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with frontline providers in staircase services in Ireland (n = 50). Data showed that, while their values mostly aligned to the treatment-led model, there was meaningful evidence of more recovery-oriented values, too. Objective: Recovery is the process through which one learns to overcome, manage, or live with the negative consequences of physical illness, mental illness, alcohol or drug misuse, or trauma. Homeless individuals endure many, or all, of these experiences. Previous research has shown that characteristics of homeless services, particularly the amount of choice they afford to service users, can influence recovery experiences, potentially by increasing a sense of mastery. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that choice in housing and services would predict recovery in a number of domains, and that these relationships would be mediated by mastery. Method: Using survey data collected from a sample of homeless services users (n = 160) in Ireland, we conducted a series of cross-sectional mediation analyses to predict recovery in domains of physical health, psychiatric symptoms, alcohol and drug use, and community integration. Results: We observed the hypothesized mediational relationship for each recovery domain except alcohol use. That is, personal mastery mediated the relationship of perceived choice to self-appraised physical health, psychiatric symptoms, drug use, and physical and psychological aspects of community integration, but not alcohol use. Conclusions and Implications for Practice: Findings add further support to the growing body of evidence that suggests choice is centrally important to recovery experiences among individuals in homelessness. We examined how men tell stories of masculinity, continuity, and change in the liminal context of moving between hometown and university. In nine in‐depth semi‐structured interviews with male students at an Irish university, participants were asked to describe their experiences moving between the places of home and university. We examined the functions of men's stories using a narrative approach to discourse analysis. We identified three strategies that university men use to construct and position the self in a narrative of transition: continuity through stability, continuity through resistance, and continuity through growth. We conclude that participants use all three strategies to construct 'authentic' masculinity. Therefore, a primary discursive goal in these men's talk about life transitions was to construct a stable and authentic masculine identity. Our findings foreground men's use of masculinity to maintain a coherent identity in response to liminal contexts. We highlight the importance of examining identity performance across liminal contexts and among other more disadvantaged groups to analyse different self and identity construction in stories of change. Findings are discussed in relation to stability and continuity as important discursive accomplishment for masculinity and other identities in liminality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examined the relation of two acculturation stressors, exclusion from ordinary privileges and overt discrimination, to two indicators of psychological well-being (i.e., psychiatric symptoms and satisfaction with life) among a diverse sample of immigrant women living in Ireland (N = 174). We grouped our sample into "visible" immigrant women of color and "nonvisible" White immigrant women. As expected, visible immigrant women reported more experiences of overt discrimination and fewer experiences of ordinary privileges than did nonvisible immigrant women. The associations of belonging to a visible immigrant group with both psychiatric symptoms and satisfaction with life were each mediated through ordinary privileges and overt discrimination. The magnitude of the two indirect effects was equal for psychiatric symptoms, but for satisfaction with life, the indirect effect through ordinary privileges was stronger. After accounting for ordinary privileges and overt discrimination, the average score for satisfaction with life was higher for visible immigrant women than for nonvisible immigrant women. These findings suggest that visible immigrant women experience exclusion from ordinary privileges to a greater extent than nonvisible immigrant women and that this type of exclusion is at least as detrimental to psychological health as more overt forms of discrimination. Our findings demonstrate the importance of attending to discrimination of both visible and nonvisible immigrants and highlight the importance of ordinary privileges to immigrants' well-being in their countries of destination. Previous research demonstrated the importance of consumer choice and mastery to residential stability and psychiatric functioning for adults with histories of homelessness. In the present study, we investigated whether these relationships hold, even in the context of problem-related substance misuse. Questionnaire data were collected in Ireland from 101 residents of long-term homeless accommodation in 2010. Hayes' PROCESS macro for mediation and moderation analysis in SPSS was employed to test our hypotheses. Findings demonstrated that the indirect effect of choice through mastery on psychiatric functioning was stronger for individuals with more recent problem-related substance use than for those with no or distant histories of problem-related substance use. Our findings confirm that consumer choice in housing and services is important to homeless services users' recovery experiences. Because of its relationship with mastery, consumer choice in housing and services protects homeless services users' psychiatric functioning, especially when substance use-related choices have had negative consequences. Our findings suggest that if homeless services take away consumer choice when substance use causes problems, they may actually undermine, rather than foster, service users' psychiatric functioning.
