Face-to-face outreach activities with scientific researchers provide schools with tangible role models, real world context for the curriculum, and a unique shared experience for groups of students. Moving from face-to-face to online engagement at short notice represents a unique challenge for the continuation of many outreach activities. The development, logistics, and feedback for a new series of live virtual sessions between university-based researchers and secondary schools are described here. Stories from the Lab was developed and run with science teachers during the initial phase of the COVID-19 lockdown in Ireland. In addition to the benefits afforded to teachers and students, it also provided the researchers with suitable work experience and peer-learning as part of their structured Ph.D. program.

Internationally, the consequences of the "Mathematics problem" are a source of concern for the education sector and governments alike. Growing consensus exists that the inability of students to successfully make the transition to tertiary level mathematics education lies in the substantial mismatch between the nature of entrants' pre-tertiary mathematical experiences and subsequent tertiary level mathematics-intensive courses. This paper reports on an Irish study that focuses on the pre-tertiary mathematics experience of entering students and examined its influence on students' ability to make a successful transition to tertiary level mathematics. Brousseau's "didactical contract" is used as an intellectual tool to uncover and describe the contract that exists in two case mathematics classrooms in Irish upper secondary schools (Senior Cycle). Although the authors are professional mathematics educators and well informed about classroom practice in Ireland, they were genuinely surprised by the very restrictive nature of this contract and the damaging consequences for students' future mathematical education.

Continuity of the supply chain is an integral element in the safe and timely delivery of health services. Lean Six Sigma (LSS), a continuous improvement approach, aims to drive efficiencies and standardisation in processes, and while well established in the manufacturing and supply chain industries, also has relevance in healthcare supply chain management. This study outlines the application of LSS tools and techniques within the supply chain of an Operating Room (OR) setting in a private hospital in Dublin, Ireland. A pre-/post-intervention design was employed following the Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control (DMAIC) framework and applying LSS methodology to redesign the current process for stock management both within the OR storage area and within a pilot OR suite, through collaborative, inclusive, and participatory engagement with staff. A set of improvements were implemented to standardise and streamline the stock management in both areas. The main outcomes from the improvements implemented were an overall reduction in the value of stock held within the operating theatre by 17.7%, a reduction in the value of stock going out of date by 91.7%, and a reduction in the time spent by clinical staff preparing stock required for procedures by 45%, all demonstrating the effectiveness of LSS in healthcare supply chain management.

This paper explores the well-being ['well-being' and 'wellbeing' are used interchangeably in the literature. Well-being is used in this paper (except in the reference list where exact wording is maintained)] benefits of participation in a workplace choir for health service staff. A mixed method study, this project combines quantitative measures of work engagement, perceived stress, resilience levels and work absences with qualitative interviews with choir participants. It is the first study of workplace choirs in Ireland and one of very few studies internationally that research health service staff choirs. There is some preliminary evidence of benefits that choir attendance may increase positive perception of workers' mental health as well as effect depression rates. However, evidence is limited quantitatively and difficulties in measuring the health benefits of arts interventions are noted. Qualitative data, however, confirms previous study findings, namely that a workplace choir can promote social connectedness, enjoyment at work and staff engagement. Work place choir was also noted to appeal mainly to a limited demographic of work place staff and people with relatively positive health and well-being. Efforts must be made to engage staff from lower socio-economic backgrounds, diverse cultural backgrounds and male staff in work place health promotion activities, as these groups were found less likely to join a work place choir. Given the low cost and low risk of this activity, and the qualitative benefits reported, it is recommended to continue to develop and evaluate health service workplace choirs., (© The Author(s) 2019. In the Western World self-immolation is an uncommon but dramatic method of attempting suicide. In-patients who attempt suicide by fire-setting tend to be female with severe psychopathology. In a previous study from the South of Ireland, seven cases from a psychiatric and prison population were identified in a five year period from 1984 to 1989. This would represent an annual rate of 1.07 per cent of burns treated in the burns unit at Cork University Hospital. In this study 12 cases were identified for the years 1994 and 1995. This represents an increase of 3.5 per cent from 1.07 to 4.6 per cent of all burns treated at the same institution. Ten of these patients had a previous psychiatric history and eight of them were resident on a psychiatric ward when they committed the act. Seven of the patients were found to have a high degree of suicide intent of whom four died of their injuries, which gives a mortality rate for this group of 33 per cent. Effective prevention policies are necessary if this increasing problem is to be curtailed.

Several reports have suggested that there is an increasing incidence of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). We examined the incidence of IHPS in a stable population in the West of Ireland over a ten year period (1981-1990). During the 10 years of the study the number of live births per year did not alter significantly. The incidence of IHPS increased significantly from 0.87/1000 live births in 1981 to 5.10/1000 in 1990 (p < 0.001, Student's test), peaking in 1989 at 6.8/1000. There was no statistical correlation between the increasing incidence and feeding habits, birth rank, family history or gender distribution. The reason(s) for this increase remain unclear.

We have analysed the accuracy of cytological examination of voided urine in a population of 265 patients presenting with suspected bladder lesions. Bladder carcinoma was confirmed by tissue histopathology in 51 patients. Of these, 42 were identified correctly by urinary cytology examination. Overall 34 patients were labelled as frankly malignant on cytology, of whom 2 were negative on final histology. 13 patients had been designated as suspicious however with 3 benign on final histological diagnosis. These data give a sensitivity for diagnosis of bladder cancer by urinary cytology of 82%, a specificity of 97%, a positive predictive value of 94%, and a negative predictive value of 96%.
