The article discusses various interpretations of Zionism and the effect of a national state (Israel) on Judaism and the concept of Jewishness. Starting with the position of Karl Marx on the emancipation of Jews through the elimination of their religious and national identity, the author moves on to discuss Theodor Herzl and his secular or Labor Zionism as expressed in his novel "Altneuland," and the militant religious nationalism that arose in response to it. He then discusses the theories of Sigmund Freud on Jewish history and those of "cultural Zionists" like Martin Buber.
