This article focuses on the ways in which the Israeli kibbutz communities and the North American Hutterian Brethren colonies adapt to the pressures of the external society. Since both kibbutz and colony are intentional communities, ideology is unusually important to them. Their charters of social organization and action are based on a set of beliefs of what is right, proper and good. In both colonies, ideology and culture function to define and restrict the range of possible alternative responses to given situations.
