This paper reports findings on associations between four subscales of social alienation and psychological distress and sleep problems, and the moderating effects of ethnic pride and shame on these relationships. The study employed a cross-sectional survey design. Participants were 1008 Israeli Palestinian and Jewish adolescents recruited via public schools that allowed access. The questionnaires were administered in adolescents' native language (Hebrew or Arabic) in their homeroom classes. As hypothesized, findings showed that adolescents who have more trust in procedural justice and prefer their own ethnic group reported fewer sleep problems and that adolescents who were less committed to the law and more alienated reported more sleep problems. The findings also showed negative association between psychological distress and believing in procedural justice and positive association with alienation. However, of sixteen moderating effects tested only ethnic pride reached statistical significance and moderated the effect of alienation on sleep problems. Findings also showed that gender, ethnicity and SES were partially linked to both outcomes variables. Psychological distress and sleep problems were associated with female gender, Palestinian-Israeli ethnic affiliation and low SES. Several possible explanations are offered for the findings. Psychological and physical health among women with breast cancer are linked. However, more research is needed to test the interrelations between psychological and somatic symptoms, over time and throughout the different phases of breast cancer treatment, to determine when and which interventions should be prioritized. Six hundred and eighty nine women from four countries (Finland, Israel, Italy and Portugal) completed questionnaires during their first clinical consultation following diagnosis with breast cancer, and again after 3 and 6 months. The questionnaires included self‐reported measures of psychological symptoms (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Short Form) and somatic symptoms [selected items from the International European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) questionnaires]. Psychological and somatic symptoms were relatively stable across the three time‐points. Cross‐lagged paths leading from somatic to psychological symptoms (beta coefficients of 0.08–0.10), as well as vice‐versa (beta 0.11–0.12), were found to be significant. No evidence was found for cross‐cultural differences in mutual effects of psychological and somatic symptoms. The findings of this study call for tailoring personal interventions for breast cancer patients—either from a somatic perspective or a psychological perspective—and adjust them to the specific experiences of the individual patient. This study examined the associations between social workers' professional identity and the quality of their work, as reflected by their perceived job performance and sense of personal accomplishment. Based on literature attesting to the contribution of the working alliance between social workers and their service‐users to the attainment of interventions' goals, a model in which the working alliance mediated the associations between social workers' professional identity and the quality of their work was also tested. The study's sample consisted of 570 social workers in Israel, from a wide range of professional and organisational backgrounds. The study was cross‐sectional, and data were gathered using an online questionnaire. Its results demonstrate direct effects of social workers' professional identity on the quality of their work. At the same time, social workers' working alliance with service‐users acted as a mediator in the association between certain aspects of workers' professional identity and the quality of their work. These findings reassert and broaden understandings regarding the crucial role of relationships with service‐users in the discussion of social work professional identity and its outcomes. The specific associations found also offer sustenance to the idea that autonomous social workers, who are committed to their profession, manage to generate stronger working alliances with their service‐users; which in turn makes them better at what they do. Objective: The main objective of this prospective multicenter study was to examine whether illness representations of control, affect, and coping behaviors mediate the effects of self‐efficacy to cope with cancer on psychological symptoms and overall quality of life, in breast cancer patients. Method: Data from 413 women (Mean age = 54.87; SD = 8.01), coming from four countries (i.e., Finland, Israel, Italy, Portugal), who received medical therapy for their early breast cancer, were analyzed. Coping self‐efficacy was assessed at baseline. Potential mediators were assessed three months later, and outcomes after six months. Results: Coping self‐efficacy was related to all mediators and outcomes. Illness representations of treatment control, positive and negative affect, and certain coping behaviors (mostly, anxiety preoccupation) mediated the effects of coping self‐efficacy. Coping self‐efficacy was related to each outcome through a different combination of mediators. Conclusions: Coping self‐efficacy is a major self‐regulation factor which is linked to well‐being through multiple cognitive, emotional, and behavioral pathways. Enhancement of coping self‐efficacy should be a central intervention goal for patients with breast cancer, towards promotion of their well‐being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we report findings pertaining to connections between social workers' exposure to daily stressors, the work benefits they receive, their levels of burnout and their well-being. We examined (i) the associations between social workers' perceived exposure to daily stressors and their well-being; (ii) the mediating effect of burnout on these associations; and (iii) the moderating effect of extrinsic and intrinsic work benefits on the relationships between perceived exposure to daily stressors and burnout. Participants were 486 social workers, working in various organisations and with diverse populations in Israel. Of the various findings, two are of particular interest. One is that workers' depersonalisation of their clients mediated the relationship between the workers' exposure to daily stressors and their psychological distress. The other is that neither intrinsic nor extrinsic work benefits weakened the association between workers' exposure to daily stressors and their burnout, in terms of personal accomplishment. On the contrary, high benefits of either kind strengthened this association. These unexpected findings are discussed within the frameworks of relationships between service users and service providers and of Wilensky's compensatory theory. Exposure to racism and microaggressions vary according to the community in which members of minority groups reside, especially its level of ethnic density. This study examined a mediating and moderating model of the relationship between ethnic density and psychological distress in Palestinian Israeli adolescents. Data were collected from 777 Palestinian Israelis in public high schools by means of five Arabic-written standardized scales, and a demographic questionnaire. The findings partially supported the theoretical model. As hypothesized, the findings showed a mediating effect of perceived microaggressions between ethnic density and psychological distress; family support moderated this mediation effect. The findings did not corroborate the hypothesized moderating effects of ethnic shame and pride and of family undermining on the relationships between perceived microaggressions and psychological distress. However, family undermining had a direct effect on psychological distress. The categories for the heterogeneous populations did not yield any findings in terms of mediating effect. The findings suggest that complex relationships exist among the variables. The support for the important role of social support and for the mediating effect of perceived microaggressions as a mechanism that explains how ethnic density is related to psychological distress is congruent with minority stress theory and with former empirical findings. The relatively average to high economic status of the respondents, the limited variance of the economic status variable and the nature of relationships and attitudes towards girls and boys in the Palestinian Israeli community may explain some of the findings. School violence is a global concern that calls for international research using cross context methods. Although there are several international surveys that compare school violence across countries, they do not clearly address issues of similarities and differences in relative prevalence of different types of victimization and their relations with age, sex, and cultural group. We explored these questions among Israeli-Arab (n = 13,606), Israeli-Jewish (n = 10,637), and Chilean students in poor schools in a large Chilean city (n = 4557), using the same self-report questionnaire that measures verbal-social victimization, victimization by threats, physical victimization, and sexual harassment. As hypothesized, we found similarities in the patterns of relative prevalence of victimization types, as well as study group, sex, and age main effects and interactions. These effects were evident even when the lowest third SES group in Israel was compared with the Chilean students. These findings suggest group differences in prevalence of student victimization, and at the same time cultural invariance in relative prevalence of victimization types and their relations with sex and age. We discuss the need for more international comparative research in this field that takes into account cultural values and the structure and organizations of schools within the different educational systems. Objectives:Given the increasing reliance on both formal (paid) and informal (unpaid) assistance for the care of older adults and the close relationships which are often formed with home care workers, the present study evaluated satisfaction with the relationship from the perspectives of the three members that make up the home caregiving triad: older adults, their family members and their home care workers. Methods: We relied on a representative sample of 223 complete caregiving triads composed of an older adult, a family member and a home care worker. Each of the members rated his or her level of satisfaction with all other members in the unit, using a seven-item self-report satisfaction with the relationship scale (e.g., satisfaction with communication, intimacy). The Social Relations Model (SRM) was used to partial out the specific variance associated with each of the members as either an actor (i.e., the average satisfaction as a rater, unrelated to whom the person rates) or a partner (i.e., the unique satisfaction level elicited by a person, which is consistent across all ratings of this person). Results: The structural equations model yielded acceptable results: χ2(3) = 6.94,p= .07. Our analysis revealed that the variability associated with the worker as partner was significantly greater than the variability associated with the older adult as partner (∆χ2[1] = 9.21,p= .002) or with the family member as partner (∆χ2[1] = 8.46,p= .004). Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of studying satisfaction with the relationship in the home care setting and calls for further examination of the entire caregiving triad. The current study assessed breast cancer patients' somatic symptoms during the first six months post diagnosis and examined the moderating role of coping flexibility (i.e., trauma-focused and forward-focused coping strategies) on the association between reported somatic symptoms three months after breast cancer diagnosis and somatic symptoms six months after diagnosis. An international sample of 702 women diagnosed with breast cancer from four countries (Finland, Israel, Italy, Portugal) completed self-reported questionnaires at three time points: at the time of diagnosis (M0), three months post diagnosis (M3), and six months post diagnosis (M6). The questionnaires included the coping flexibility scale and questions about demographics, medical data, and somatic symptoms. The highest level of somatic symptoms was reported after three months post diagnosis (M3), as compared to M0 and M6. Both trauma-focused and forward-focused coping strategies moderated the relationship between somatic symptoms at M3 and somatic symptoms at M6. The findings highlight the importance of assessing somatic symptoms soon after breast cancer diagnosis and throughout the early phase of treatment. Coping flexibility can buffer the stability of the somatic symptoms during this initial phase. • Somatic symptoms start after a breast cancer diagnosis and reach a peak after three months. • Coping flexibility mitigates the consistency of somatic complaints over the first six months. • Coping flexibility contributes to improved quality of life in early-phase breast cancer patients. • Screening somatic symptoms is recommended from diagnosis and throughout breast cancer treatment. Objective: Women dealing with breast cancer (BC) face many challenges, one of which is the fear of cancer recurrence (FCR). This study examined whether disease severity predicts FCR 6 months after cancer diagnosis through psychological distress and whether cognitive-emotion regulation moderates this effect., Method: The study sample included 656 women from Italy (27.5%), Finland (31.9%), Israel (19.8%), and Portugal (20.8%) diagnosed with Stages I-III of BC. Participants' age ranged between 40 and 70 years ( M = 54.92, SD = 8.22). Participants were tracked following BC diagnosis and at 3 and 6 months follow-up. Participants filled out self-report questionnaires, including the FCR inventory-short form, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the cognitive-emotion regulation questionnaire along with medical-social-demographic data., Results: Greater disease severity at baseline indicated by higher cancer stage predicted greater psychological distress, which in turn predicted greater psychological distress at 3 months. The latter predicted greater FCR at 6 months. This serial mediation model was moderated by negative cognitive-emotion regulation. The mediating effect of disease severity on FCR through psychological distress was significant only in women with mean or higher levels of negative cognitive-emotion regulation., Conclusion: This study suggests that facilitating psychological well-being and effective cognitive-emotion regulation in the early stages after a cancer diagnosis may protect women from FCR. Purpose: This study aims to examine the association between adults' experience of stuttering and their age, gender and marital status, as well as to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Hebrew version of the OASES-A., Methods: The Hebrew version of the OASES-A was administered to 91 adults-who-stutter. The validity of the translated version was evaluated using a subset of 43 participants, who also completed three additional instruments: (a) a Perceived Stuttering Severity (PSS) self-rating scale, (b) the Situation Avoidance Behavior Checklist (SABC), (c) the Students Life Satisfaction scale (SLSS). Finally, the correlations between the participants' OASES-A scores and their age, gender and marital status were calculated., Results: A negative correlation was found between the participants' OASES-A impact scores and their age (p<0.01). In addition, married participants exhibited lower OASES-A impact scores compared with unmarried participants (p<0.05). On the other hand, the speakers' gender was not associated with OASES-A impact scores., Results: revealed high internal consistency of the Hebrew OASES-A, and moderate to strong correlations with the additional examined instruments. Finally, results of the Hebrew version of the questionnaire were comparable with those obtained in other languages., Conclusion: Our results indicated that, within our cohort, age and marital status are significantly associated with the personal experience of stuttering, whereas gender is not. In addition, the Hebrew version of the OASES-A is valid and comparable with equivalent versions in other languages. This study examined the moderating role of self-complexity (SC) on well-being (WB) and psychopathology among Israeli adolescents exposed to the Second Lebanon War (2006). Adolescents (N=584, mean age 16.41) completed a SC measure, Political and Negative Life Events (NLE) scales, Brief Symptom Inventory and Satisfaction with Life Scale. The theoretical model analyzed the function of SC as a moderator of exposure effects to political life events (PLE), while controlling for general NLE. Results corroborated the model with SC moderating the effects of the war-related PLE. Adolescents with low SC are at risk for damaged WB and psychiatric consequences from political violence exposure. This opens a diagnostic avenue for identification of at-risk adolescents in this socio-political context toward whom clinical programs should be directed.
