The article examines the relation between labor movements and politics by focusing on the Kurdish coal heavers' strike which took place in Istanbul in the November of 1910. It investigates the language and practices of the state institutions and socialists, police reports, socialist press and minutes of the Parliament to analyze the ways in which the strike moved out of its initial context of struggle between laborer and employer. It moved into a power field in which the most important topics of the Second Constitutional Period, like freedom of speech, state-society relations and relations between different ethnic groups, were discussed. In these debates, socialist saw the strike as a supra-ethnic movement and presented it to the public within an Ottomanist framework. Lastly, the article highlights the historiographical questions which emerge due the fact that our knowledge about Kurdish workers of the strike whose political representation is limited, are based on sources produced by members of other ethnic groups.
