We report in Lombardy, a populous region in the northwest, a chamois displaying clinical signs of tickborne encephalitis virus that had multiple virus-positive ticks attached, as well as a symptomatic man. Simple Summary: Colic surgery, despite the improvements in recent years, is not without risks and still has a high risk of death compared with other procedures. Although about 90% of cases of colic in horses resolve spontaneously or with medical treatment, the remaining 10% can be fatal if not treated surgically. Furthermore, postoperative complications can have important welfare and economic consequences. Studies of predictive prognosis indices, incidence of postoperative complications, and survival rates in different geographical areas may not be comparable. Consequently, there is a need to perform a study that investigates the Italian population of animals subjected to colic surgery. A total of 451 horses were included. The short-term survival rate was 68.5% for all the horses that underwent colic surgery and 80% of the horses surviving anaesthesia. Several risk factors were evaluated and age, body condition score (BCS), packed cell volume (PCV) and total plasma protein (TPP) before and after surgery, amount of reflux, type of disease, type of lesion, duration of surgery and surgeon's experience, and amount of intra- and postoperative fluids administered affected the outcome. The multivariate analysis revealed that PCV at arrival, TPP after surgery, and BCS had the highest predictive power. This is the first multicentre study in Italy and the results of this study could help surgeons choose the best treatment and clearly communicate risks to referring veterinarians and owners. Further prospective studies should be conducted to confirm the effect of predictive indices considered in this study on short-term survival. The occurrence of colic could be influenced by the characteristics of a population, geographical area, and feeding management. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used for parameters that were significant in the previous univariate analysis. The goodness-of-fit of the model was assessed using the Akike information criterion (AIC). Significance was defined as p < 0.05, and odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated as percentages. A total of 451 horses were included. The disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic generated an unprecedented situation, in which digital learning, in the form of Emergency Remote Teaching, was the only possible form of schooling. Italy soon decided to close schools as a measure to counter the spread of the virus. Although the Ministry of Education suggested general guidelines, school principals and teachers were autonomous in deciding how to best organise their educational activities. The first objective of our study is to identify subgroups of teachers, based on the use of digital tools during the Covid-19 emergency. Secondly, we explore how subgroups differ in terms of teachers' satisfaction and students' performance. To this end, we integrate information from an ad hoc survey completed by 1,407 primary and lower secondary teachers in Italy, with the students' standardised test scores provided by INVALSI. Data have been analysed through a 3-step latent class analysis. The findings reveal that one third of the teachers showed resistance to the use of digital technologies and focused mainly on asynchronous teaching. Teachers that used a broader set of digital instruments, instead, were more satisfied with their teaching practices. A more articulated use of technology for teaching activities was also positively associated with higher students' performance in 2021. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Equine grass sickness (EGS) has been reported in several European and extra-European countries. Despite this, no scientific paper about clinical cases of EGS in Italy has been published. EGS is a disease affecting almost exclusively horses kept on pasture, characterized by clinical signs related to lesions in autonomic nervous system (ANS), particularly in the enteric nervous system (ENS). According to clinical presentation, acute, subacute and chornic syndromes can be observed, with various sympthoms including dullness, anorexia, dysphagia, drooling of saliva, tachycardia, ptosis, patchy sweating and muscle fasciculations. In horses affected by acute forms, mild to moderate abdominal pain and large volumes of nasogastric reflux can be observed. The etiology is still speculative and many hypothesis have been proposed to explain the pathogenesis. Case presentation: The present study describes four cases of EGS (one subacute and three chronic forms) occurred in Central Italy during early spring. In all the cases included in the study, the prognosis was poor and the horses were euthanized. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological examination of ANS or ENS. In two cases, in vivo diagnosis was obtained by histological examination of enteric bioptic samples collected during laparoscopy. Conclusions: EGS in Italy could be underdiagnosed and incidence understimated. Greater awareness should be applied in Italy for the inclusion of EGS in differential diagnosis for horses presenting clinical signs of abdominal pain associated or not with gastric reflux and muscular fasciculation. All the cases in this study concerned horses kept in the same pasture, confirming a possible premise-linked and management-linked factors on the ethiopathogenesis of EGS. The age of horses ranged from 2 to 6 years, that is consistent with the risk factor age for EGS (from 2 to 7 years of age). On March 9, 2020, the Italian government imposed a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus disease 2019. Oral health services were limited to only essential services. Nonurgent treatments were postponed. This study described the management of urgent dental care in northern Italy during the lockdown, with a particular focus on the province of Brescia. A cross-sectional survey was administered to Italian dentists at the end of the lockdown (May 3, 2020). A total of 1407 dentists answered the survey. A total of 1205 dentists were included. Most of the respondents were dental owners (73.6%). About 79.7% of the dentists handled urgencies during the lockdown. The number of urgencies treated weekly was lower than that generally handled before the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak (P <.001). Many dentists (81.2%) provided telephone consultations to evaluate symptoms. Pulpitis and abscesses were the most common urgencies (44.7% and 40.2%, respectively). Furthermore, 95% of dentists wore masks, protective eyewear, and surgical gloves while delivering nonpostponable treatments. The filtering facepiece 2 mask was used by 41.8% and 41.7% of owners and dental assistants, respectively. Financial concerns, risk of contagion, and personal protective equipment supply were indicated as the main current concerns. Our survey showed that Italian dentists took protective measures during the lockdown, thus minimizing the risk of contagion for dental health care personnel and patients. Deer keds (Lipoptena spp.) are blood‐sucking ectoparasites of domestic and wild animals, and also accidentally of humans. In Europe, five Lipoptena spp. have been recorded, although the lack of specific taxonomic keys has often led to mistaken identification or to missing data. The present study aimed to develop an identification key of the European species and also to identify Lipoptena spp. found on wild ungulates in northern Italy. In total, 390 hippoboscids were collected from Rupicapra rupicapra, Capreolus capreolus, Cervus elaphus and Ovis aries musimon in an Alpine area of Italy. After morphological identification, 140 specimens were subjected to phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial (CO1) and nuclear (CAD) gene sequences. Despite the expected presence of slight morphological variations, all specimens examined were identified both microscopically and molecularly as Lipoptena cervi (100% identity for both CO1 and CAD genes). The massive increase in wild ungulate populations can favour the possibility of detecting other species of Lipoptena. The identification keys proposed in the present study may help with monitoring the presence of Lipoptena species, particularly in European countries where this ectoparasite is neglected and for which various data (from diffusion to control methods) are still missing. This paper investigates the heterogeneous impact of school closures during Covid-19 pandemic in Italy on academic performance across different schools, grades, subjects and groups of students. Our analysis utilises an innovative dataset that combines administrative data on standardised tests in grades 5 and 8 with a specifically-designed survey that collects information about teachers' practices between February and June 2020. Firstly, by employing a multilevel (mixed-effects) model, we estimate the extent of learning loss and examine its variability across schools, for students in primary and middle levels during the school year 2020/21. The findings confirm that learning loss has been considerable (between 0.05 and 0.27 SD) although heterogeneity across disciplines and grades exists – higher in English in grade 5, and in mathematics and reading in grade 8. Secondly, as a main contribution of the paper, we explore the mechanisms behind the substantial differences observed across schools, which can be explained by the ability of teachers in using digital tools and evaluating their students, as well as by the leadership role exerted by school principals. The literature about the care givers of patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DOCs) has highlighted the impact on both mental and physical dimensions of quality of life. This study aimed to: (1) describe emotional burden, quality of life, and coping styles in care givers of hospitalized patients with DOCs, compared to Italian normative data; (2) explore the relationships between these variables and their associations with socio-demographic features; and (3) describe their changes over time.Fifteen care givers of patients with DOCs, mostly middle-aged women, were assessed using the Family Strain Questionnaire, the SF-36 Health Survey, and the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced – Nuova Versione Italiana. Eleven subjects were also assessed after 6 and 12 months. Data were analysed through descriptive statistics, correlations, and nonparametric tests of group differences.Compared to the Italian normative data, our sample showed a worse outcome in mental health, social functioning, global mental component, and emotional role functioning. Furthermore, subjects with high emotional burden had more thoughts of death compared to subjects with low emotional burden. Follow-up analyses revealed no variables changed over time.These results highlight the need for psychological interventions and support, since care givers represent an important part of an all-embracing support and care network for patients with DOCs. Within the PanGeo project (financed by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Program), the Geological Survey of Italy ( ISPRA) and the Urban Planning Department of the City of Roma developed a geodatabase and map of the geological hazards for the territory of Roma, integrating remotely sensed data (PSInSAR-Permanent Scatterer Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar) and in situ geological information. Numerous thematic layers, maps and inventories of hazards (e.g., landslides, sinkholes, cavities), geological and hydrogeological data added to historical and recent urbanization information were compared to the permanent scatterer (PS) data from the European Remote Sensing satellites (ERS-1/2, 1992-2000) and ENVISAT (2002-2005) descending scenes, in order to produce a ground stability layer (GSL). Based on the PS data, most of the territory appears stable (almost 70 % of PS velocities are within ±1 mm/year). About 14 % of the PSs show positive line-of-sight (LOS) velocities (measured along the LOS of the satellite) between 1 and 3 mm/year and more than 2 % exceed 3 mm/year; more than 11 % of PSs show negative LOS velocities between −1 and −3 mm/year, while about 3 % exceed −3 mm/year (with tens of the PSs showing velocities over −20 mm/year). The GSL is comprised of polygons or multi-polygons (multipart polygons grouping individual polygons under a single identifier geohazard) enclosing areas where geohazards have been pointed out by PS data and/or in situ surveys (observed instabilities), and by polygons enclosing areas potentially affected by geohazards, based on the available knowledge of the territory (potential instabilities). In Roma's GSL, 18 multi-polygons (covering ca. 600 km) related to observed instabilities have been outlined, where ground movements could be detected through InSAR data or where landslides and sinkholes are known to have occurred. Other 13 multi-polygons (covering nearly 900 km) concern areas where the potential occurrence of geohazards was inferred by combining geological and/or geothematic data (potential instabilities). The geohazards mapped in Roma have been: landslides, collapsible grounds, compressible grounds, groundwater abstraction, mining, man-made ground, tectonic movements, and volcanic inflation/deflation. The lattermost is the likely cause of the significant uplift observed in the Alban Hills area. However, this paper focuses on two more currently impending hazards: subsidence and sinkholes. In general, sinkhole-prone areas (areas of dense underground cavities) are hard to discern from satellite data, but can be revealed by ruling out other potential causes of observed ground movement based on in situ data. Subsiding zones are effectively detected by the available PSInSAR dataset over a total extent of about 60 km, mostly overlapping the recent alluvial areas of the Tiber and its tributaries. PSs show a very different behaviour inside and outside the historical centre. Inside, loading by anthropogenic construction and man-made ground since ancient times has led to an almost complete consolidation of the recent river deposits, marked by modest to absent subsidence. In contrast, outside, subsidence clearly stands out, with negative LOS velocities that, although generally within several mm/year, can locally exceed −25 mm/year. PS data have provided motion information at both a regional and local scale (up to the scale of a single building). Closer to the sea, in the Tiber delta area, velocities increase, especially above recently reclaimed marsh areas, rich in peat and organic clays. Velocities can change significantly over short distances, as in the international airport area, reflecting the local stratigraphic setting. The same occurs in the two subsiding areas located within the Alban Hills volcanic complex, which is generally affected by ground uplift. As a whole, PSInSAR ground motion velocities offer a significant contribution to susceptibility and hazard recognition studies. In particular, such a method provides a fast and effective tool available to local authorities to monitor ground and building behaviour, possibly allowing for timely prevention activities, especially when coupled with appropriate in situ knowledge. Objective: Previous studies on caregivers of patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) have highlighted that their overall burden is not related to disease duration or diagnosis, but mainly to their personal characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of attachment style and hopelessness on overall burden in caregivers of patients in both vegetative state and minimally conscious state. Methods and procedure: Nineteen caregivers of patients with DOCs, hosted in a long-term care facility, were assessed using the Caregiver Burden Inventory, the Attachment Style Questionnaire, and the Beck Hopelessness Scale. Socio-demographic information was also collected. Data were analysed through descriptive statistics, correlations, one sample t-test and a multiple regression analysis using SPSS. Outcomes and results: Burden was not associated with duration of caregiving and gender had no effect on overall burden. Multiple regression analysis indicated that preoccupied attachment style and hopelessness together predicted 49% of the total variability of burden ( R2 = 0.489; adjusted R = 0.43). Conclusions: These data suggest that caregivers need psychological assessment and support in order to keep under control the level of burden and to help themselves be a better resource for their relatives. IntroductionThere is increasing evidence that hypertension may contribute to development of dementia. Studies show that blood pressure lowering therapy might protect against cognitive deterioration and that antihypertensive treatment reduce the incidence of dementia. AimWe hypothesize that administration of cholinesterase inhibitors (AChEis) to patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) receiving antihypertensive medications therapy would result in clinical benefits for a period of 40 weeks in routine clinical practice. Methods and materialsPatients with possible or probable AD were enrolled from 16 Alzheimer evaluation units (UVA) of Brescia and Cremona (Northern Italy). Patients treated with donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine for 40 weeks independently of dosages were selected. Patients were evaluated at baseline (T0), 4 weeks (T1), 16 weeks (T2) and 40 weeks (T3). Results416 patients completed the study at 40 weeks; of these 255 were ‘non users’ while 161 utilized antihypertensive drugs (‘users’). The mean change in MMSE score from baseline to week 40 demonstrate that antihypertensive-treated patients improved by 0.7 points while patients receiving only AChEis remain stables. Analyzing separately patients (n = 183) that ameliorate (responders) on cognition at T3 ( ≥ 1 point MMSE score increase) a significant differences in favor of ‘users’ antihypertensive drugs over ‘non users’ on cognition at weeks 16 and 40 has been demonstrated. In particular, at T2 the mean change of MMSE from baseline in ‘users’ was 3.2 ± 2.6 vs ‘non users’ 2.2 ± 2.3 ( p = 0.016) and at T3 was 3.5 ± 2.5 vs ‘non users’ 2.0.2.7±1.6 ( p = 0.018). Antihypertensive drugs were independently associated with cognitive improvement in responder patients treated with AChEis (95% CI: 0.41–1.79; p = 0.002). ConclusionAntihypertensive medications in AD patients treated with AChEis are associated with an independent improvement on cognition after 40 weeks of treatment. Background: After the first lockdown, Italian dentists resumed their practice while handling several challenges. Reducing contagion risk by complying with the stringent measures recommended by the Italian Ministry of Health for dental activity while also balancing patient needs was a difficult task. This work aims to understand the procedures that were adopted in the second phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (5 May–30 September 2020) and the dentists' expectations and concerns about returning to normalcy. Methods: A national survey with 38 questions was conducted from November 2020 to January 2021 and comparisons were performed among the five main Italian geographic areas. Results: Located mainly in northwest Italy, 1028 dentists were included in the survey. About 83% of the Italian dentists fully restarted their activities after the lockdown. The resumption was significantly marked in North Italy and the Center than in the South (p < 0.01). Over 80% adopted the recommended precautional guidelines, modifying them according to the specific dental treatment executed. Fifty percent of dentists were confident in returning to normalcy after the COVID-19 crisis. Many precautions adopted during the pandemic will be continued, especially in South Italy and the Islands (p < 0.01). Canine distemper (CD) is a fatal, highly contagious disease of wild and domestic carnivores. In the Alpine territory, several outbreaks have occurred in the past few decades within wild populations. This study investigated the presence of canine distemper virus (CDV) infections in wild carnivores in Lombardy, relating to the different circulating genotypes. From 2018 to 2020, foxes, badgers, and martens collected during passive surveillance were subjected to necropsy and histological examination, showing classical signs and microscopic lesions related to CDV. Pools of viscera from each animal were analysed by molecular methods and immunoelectron microscopy. Total prevalences of 39.7%, 52.6%, and 14.3% were recorded in foxes, badgers, and stone martens, respectively. A phylogenetic analysis showed that the sequences obtained belonged to the European 1 lineage and were divided into two different clades (a and b) according to the geographical conformation of alpine valleys included in the study. Clade a was related to the European outbreaks originating from Germany in 2006–2010, while clade b was closely related to the CDV sequences originating from northeastern Italy during the 2011–2018 epidemic wave. Our results suggest that CDV is currently well adapted to wild carnivores, mostly circulating with subclinical manifestations and without severe impact on the dynamics of these populations. In January 1984 a hepatitis B vaccination campaign was started in health care workers of Hospital of Parma. Within 3 years, of the 953 subjects submitted to serologic screening, 446 were eligible and 409, serum negative for HBV, completed the vaccination. 202 received HB-VAX vaccine (M.S.D.) intramusculary into the buttock at 0.1 and 6 months, and 208 received HEVAC-B vaccine (Pasteur) into deltoid region at 0, 1, 2 and 12 months. After the booster injection, percent of seroconversion (anti-HBs greater than 10 UI/l) and anti-HBs antibody titres were significantly (p less than 0.01) higher in HEVAC-B recipients (95.6%, mean anti-HBs titres = 6400 UI/l), than in the subjects vaccined with HB-VAX (77.1%, mean anti-HBs titres = 2703 UI/l). There was no significative difference in immune response in both groups with respect to age, sex or occupational category. Three hepatitis B infections were identified in HB-VAX recipients, but no one in individuals vaccined with HEVAC-B. No participants had serious adverse effects, minor side effects occurred with equal frequency in both groups. In general, both plasma-derived vaccines have proved to be highly immunogenic, safe and well tolerated in health care workers, however HEVAC-B vaccine, since contains S and pre-S ag, has shown a more satisfactory immunogenic effect.
