The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed companies to the extensive use of digital services both to implement home working and to provide online services to people in lockdown. As a consequence, it is interesting to study how this has affected the number, kind, and distribution of cybersecurity attacks. This paper gives an empirical evaluation of the cybersecurity attacks at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy, based on data collected from the questionnaires of the annual Digital Attacks Observatory. It shows that the overall number of attacks has not increased, but attacks have affected smaller companies than before. This can be explained with the fact that the Italian industrial scenario is mostly populated by small and medium enterprises, that have been obligated to perform quick conversion of their IT systems and typically lack the necessary cybersecurity culture. The diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies can be challenging with consequent difficulties in patients' management. The aim of this study was to explore the current diagnostic role of sural nerve biopsy and to compare pathological findings with serum neurofilament light chain levels (NfL) as biomarkers of axonal damage. We collected demographic, clinical, and paraclinical data of patients referred over 1 year to the Neurology Unit, University of Verona, Italy, to perform nerve biopsy for diagnostic purposes, and we analyzed NfL levels in available paired sera using a high sensitive technique (Quanterix, Simoa). Eighty-two patients were identified (37.8% females, median age 65.5 years). Neuropathy onset was frequently insidious (68.3%) with a slowly progressive course (76.8%). Lower limbs were usually involved (81.7%), with a predominance of sensory over motor symptoms (74.4% vs 42.7%). The most common neuropathological findings were a demyelinating pattern (76.8%), clusters of regenerations (58.5%), and unmyelinated fibers involvement on ultrastructural evaluation (52.4%). A definite pathological diagnosis was achieved in 29 cases, and in 20.7% of patients, the referral clinical diagnosis was modified. Coexistent hematological conditions and hepatitis were diagnostic confounding factors (p = 0.012 and 0.034, respectively). In the analyzed paired sera (n = 37), an inverse despite not significant relationship between NfL values and fiber density was observed (Spearman's rho − 0.312, p = 0.056). In addition, we noted increased serum NfL values of patients with active axonal degeneration. Nerve biopsy remains a useful diagnostic investigation to achieve a correct diagnosis and guide patients' management in selected cases of peripheral neuropathy. Maxillofacial departments in 23 surgical units in Italy have been increasingly involved in facing the COVID-19 emergency. Elective surgeries have been progressively postponed to free up beds and offer human and material resources to those infected. We compiled an inventory of 32 questions to evaluate the impact of the SARS-COV2 epidemic on maxillofacial surgery in 23 selected Italian maxillofacial departments. The questionnaire focused on three different aspects: the variation of the workload, showing both a reduction of the number of team members (-16% among specialists, -11% among residents) due to reallocation or contamination and a consistent reduction of elective activities (the number of outpatient visits cancelled during the first month of the COVID-19 epidemic was about 10 000 all over Italy), while only tumour surgery and trauma surgery has been widely guaranteed; the screening procedures on patients and physicians (22% of maxillofacial units found infected surgeons, which is 4% of all maxillofacial surgeons); and the availability of Personal Protective Equipment, is only considered to be partial in 48% of Maxillofacial departments. Background: This study aims to investigate the incidence and the relative risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and posterior-ROP (P-ROP): ROP in Zone I and posterior Zone II, as well as to analyze the occurrence of surgical treatment of ROP and to evaluate the short term outcome of the disease in Italy. Methods: It is a prospective multicenter observational study; all infants with a birth weight (BW) ≤ 750 g and/or a gestational age (GA) ≤27 weeks born between January 1st2008 and December 31st 2009 in 25 III level Italian neonatal intensive care units were eligible for the study. Results: 421 infants were examined: 265 (62.9%) developed ROP and 102 (24.2%) P-ROP. Following the multivariate analysis erythropoietin-therapy (p < 0.0001) and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with ROP while gestational age ≤24 weeks (p = 0.011) and sepsis (p = 0.002) were associated with the onset of P-ROP. Eighty nine infants (34%) required surgical treatment; following the multivariate analysis P-ROP was an independent factor associated with the need of surgical treatment (p < 0.0001). A favorable outcome was reported in 251 (94.7%) newborns affected by ROP. Adverse outcome occurred in 14 patients: all of them underwent surgery and showed P-ROP. Conclusions: P-ROP is the most aggressive type of ROP. It associates with lower GA and sepsis. Obstetricians and Neonatologists must focus on the reduction of severe preterm births and on the prevention of neonatal early and late onset sepsis in order to reduce the incidence of P-ROP. In the framework of long-term scientific collaboration among the founder members coming from Holland and Italy there was a growing consensus to activate a philosophical doctorate (PhD) program, involving young Italian researchers in the field of perinatal medicine, neonatology and pediatrics. The aims were to promote excellence in research, offering to young Italian physicians the opportunity to maturate an International research experience leading to PhD degree, and to promote human and technological improvement energies in perinatal, neonatal and pediatrics research. Thus, an official collaboration among the Dutch Universities from Maastricht and Utrecht and the Italian Children's Hospital from Alessandria, has been activated on March 1st 2010, finalized to the PhD program. The experimental phase included the selection of projects and relative candidates after an interview-selection focusing on their scientific attitudes and the availability on their research projects. Candidates' selection started on May 2010 and on September 29th ten projects and candidates have been approved by the scientific commission. Research topics included: perinatal asphyxia, aging and the origin of adulthood neurodegenerative disease, neuroprotective strategies, biochemical pulmunology, intrauterine growth retardation and perinatal teratology. To date, all projects have been approved by local Ethics Committee from the University/Hospital of origin of the candidates. Five manuscripts have been published and/or submitted to international Journals regarding pneumology, perinatal asphyxia and teratology, whilst about 60-70% of data regarding clinical studies have already been collected. Background: People with severe mental illness (SMI) generally have high rates of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Proposed explanations remain conjectural. Relatively little is known about Mets in SMI in Southern Europe, an area with generally healthy dietary traditions., Purpose: To establish prevalence rates of MetS in an Italian sample, and testing hypotheses about putative reasons for the excess in the SMI group., Methods: We compared the prevalence and correlates of MetS in inpatients with SMI and controls randomly chosen from patients undergoing routine maxillofacial surgery. We employed formal tests of mediation., Results: The MetS prevalence rate was 26.1 % in the SMI group and 15.9 % in the comparison group. After controlling for age, people with SMI were three times more likely to have MetS than their non-SMI counterparts. Smoking and a family history of cardiovascular disease were strongly related to MetS in both groups. However, these factors could not explain the excess of MetS in the SMI group, and we found no effect of antipsychotic dose., Conclusions: SMI remained prominent in increasing the likelihood of MetS in this low prevalence population, and putative determinants of MetS were common to people with SMI and to controls. Explanations for high MetS rates in SMI may lie in health behaviours other than smoking.

To provide complete prevalence data on diabetes mellitus in Italy (diagnosed and undiagnosed), a population survey was performed in the Health District of Cremona, a representative area of the Po river (north Italy). The survey is characterised by particular attention being paid to methodology, non-responders being investigated for possible selection biases affecting diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes prevalence estimations. Out of a population aged 44 years or older from three municipalities, a random sample of 3097 subjects was selected to undergo an oral glucose tolerance test. In addition, past medical history, clinical and laboratory data were collected. A total of 1797 subjects participated (58%), and information on known diabetes status was obtained for 2618 persons (85%), also including 826 interviewed non-participating subjects. Overall rates were age-standardised according to the 1991 Italian census. Overall prevalence and 95% confidence interval of diagnosed diabetes was 8.5% (6.9-10.1) in males and 7.9% (6.7-9.3) in females over the age of 44 years; previously undiagnosed diabetes was 2.5% (1.4-3.6) in males and 3.4% (2.1-4.7) in females; glucose intolerance was 7.7% (5.7-9-7) in males and 8.9% (7.0-10.8) in females. Total diabetes prevalence above age 44 years, developed-world age, and sex standardised, was 10.7%. This study provides the first reliable prevalence estimation of impaired glucose tolerance, diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes in Italy, according to World Health Organization criteria, and one of the few figures for Southern Europe. The role of body mass index on both prevalence of diabetes and cluster of cardiovascular risk factors is considered, with implications for prevention.
