In an era of evolving literacy challenges, an Italian based project 'Leggere: Forte!' (Reading Strong) is promoting shared reading aloud to spark youth interest in reading and improve language skills. Now in its third year, the project team have analysed the impact of daily shared reading on 1829 children aged 3-10. The results show significant benefits in language, comprehension, and literacy, and highlight disparities between the experimental and the control groups. Teacher feedback underscores the positive effects of this version of shared reading. The initiative demonstrates the educational value of shared reading and calls for its integration into modern education, suggesting it as a foundation for further research and the development of rich, diverse learning environments.

Purpose: The positive correlation between students' internship and employability is well documented. However, there is no consensus on its relationship with academic performance. Previous studies investigated the Bachelor level: in the UK, the so-called sandwich placement is positively correlated; in the US, the results are mixed. This study aims to expand the scientific literature and focuses on Politecnico di Torino, Italy: the cases of the Industrial and Management Engineering Bachelor (BA) and Master of Science (MS) degree programs are examined. Design/methodology/approach: The academic performance of 2,279 BA students and 2,560 MS students graduated between 2016 and 2021 is examined. Ordinary least square models are employed to test the relationship between grades and internship, controlling for "ex ante" academic scores, gender, age and geographical origin. Findings: The results show a small robust negative correlation between internship and grades, especially at the bachelor level, where potentially a self-selection occurs. At the master level, the negative relationship is significant but very small and might be partially determined by the marks of the exams substituting the internship. Originality/value: This study contributes to the empirical research on the relationship between students' grade and internship and suggests the presence of complementarities in several ways: the Italian context, characterized by an optional internship is examined, both at the BA and MS level. Universities that intend to organize internship as overlapping with lectures and exams should be cautious, especially when considering the BA level students, whose maturity and skills are less developed than MS ones.

This study presents data on the effectiveness of participatory training, called 'Improvement Groups', voluntarily adopted in four nurseries in Northern Italy to prevent episodes of violence by staff toward children. The interventions provided for the representation of problematic cases, experienced by participants, relating to factors of work stress, poor collaborative practices, lack of protection of children, and poor quality of service provided. The participants (n = 47) were then involved in interactive training that allowed them to focus on: analysis of causes; risk assessment; and improvement actions. Effectiveness outcomes for knowledge, attitudes, safety climate, and health were assessed pre- and post-training. The data collected show that the Improvement Groups always increased the level of knowledge and safety climate. The results suggest that these interventions should be extended to other similar settings, in order to promote peer-education, appreciation, and effectiveness in generating consensus through the comparison of problematic cases that actually occur.

In this article, we present kindergarten children's ideas about thermal phenomena before any educational intervention took place. In order to capture and account for the heterogeneity of the kindergarten group in this study, first teachers observed children's exploration behavior, task orientation, science interest, and language comprehension in everyday kindergarten life using a structured observation form. Then, 24 children aged between 3.8 and 6.0 years were interviewed individually about three situations focusing upon water temperature and its changes. The results show that interest in science and language comprehension are significantly related to children's understanding of thermal phenomena, while task orientation and exploratory behavior are not. In general, the kindergarten children did not yet use the word "heat" in their descriptions and explanations but were more or less able to describe the water temperature and its changes in a differentiated way.

We experience (perceive, act upon and react to, and conceptualize) dynamical processes in nature as agentive. Expressed differently, we experience events as resulting from activities and interactions of "Forces of Nature" (such as wind, light, heat, fluids, electricity, substances, and motion) that are conceived of as powerful agents acting and interacting in physical environments. An example would be sunlight creating heat in the Earth's surface layers, and this heat using the atmosphere as a heat engine whose output are the winds on our planet. In the physics of dynamical systems, these forces are characterized in terms of intensive and extensive quantities (i.e., electric potential and electric charge in the case of electricity). The aspect of power is formalized with the help of a generalized energy principle and the rules relating power/energy to intensive and extensive physical quantities. Concrete processes depend upon properties of physical materials (in and through which forces are active) such as (thermal, electrical, etc.) capacity or conductivity. In this paper, we demonstrate how we can create "Embodied Simulations" and "Forces-of-Nature Theater" performances, where children act as forces such as water, heat, electricity, and motion. The embodied logic of the physical play teaches children about the logic of our explanations of physical processes.

This paper discusses the interactional construction of personal trajectories of migrant children with a focus on its implications for the enhancement of children's agency. The discussion is supported by the analysis of three extracts transcripts of audio or video-recorded classroom activities that illustrate the main forms of facilitation of migrant children's agency as authorship of narratives of personal trajectories of migration, also showing that facilitation is influenced by children's language proficiency. The construction of narratives can be context for the negotiation of hybrid integration, at the intersection between forms of facilitation, social and cultural contexts and personal trajectories and experiences.

Early school leaving is a real social emergency across Europe. Literature and field experience show that the factors leading to the decision to drop out of school are different: family problems, economic distress, territorial discomfort. In addition, there are individual characteristics such as: psychological dimensions, ease/difficulty of learning, ability/disability that may contribute to the rejection and to the school resistance, generating perception of inadequacy and failure. The school, in the short term, cannot affect in a profound way on non-school factors, but it can provide a positive atmosphere at school, allowing children to grow up in a serene environment, where relationships are proposing and stimulating. Aiming to make students feel comfortable at school is a way to diminish their risk to drop out. In this way, "going to school" becomes a choice "to feel well" and not a compulsory requirement. The NoOut project, which is presented here, was created with the main objective to model interventions for recovery and development, to be held during school hours, designed to prevent school dropout from primary school. The actions combine synergistically a teaching of basic skills, guidance, reading aloud (teaching of skills, direct experience, deployment of stimulating and engaging learning environments, personal narratives, narrative guidance paths, narrative training, and educational gaming). This article analyses the results outlined through the TVD test (discomfort evaluation test), which presents a drop on test outcome (that means reduction of risk of school dropout) for the first cycle of education in the first year of the NoOut project. The TVD is a tool that can provide a representation of the perceived school discomfort levels at individual and group level.

Although recent reforms of higher education (HE) across Europe have involved reconfigurations of internal governance structures, little research has been conducted on the characteristics and practices of governing bodies and their impact on performance. In particular, more empirical evidence is required on the composition of the board of directors, whose role and responsibilities in strategy making and monitoring of university activities have been significantly strengthened. This paper focuses on the issue of diversity in board composition, which has gained increasing attention in the corporate literature but has largely been ignored in HE. Since most studies of diversity in HE have been fragmented, a configurational approach is followed to examine the combinations of diversity of directors that lead to high board performance in universities. Drawing from the literature and considering the characteristics of university governance, four conditions are identified: age, gender, educational background and provenance. The method of fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is used to investigate the cases of 18 medium-sized state universities in Italy. The analysis revealed that no single condition is necessary or sufficient, while there are two paths that lead to board effectiveness: low educational background diversity and high provenance diversity combined with high age diversity, and low educational background diversity and high provenance diversity combined with low gender diversity.

Mental health of undergraduate students is receiving more attention because of the increase in the prevalence and intensity of psychological distress. Our aim is to verify the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioural counselling service in reducing psychological distress and improving academic self-efficacy in a sample of 124 students (57% above the clinical cut-off) using a pre-post assessment design. Data show a significant reduction of distress and symptoms scores among students who completed the intervention and half of them had a reliable change. Preliminary data also show a significant improvement in academic self-efficacy. University counselling services represent common first-line services for students and are effective in treating psychological distress in a wide range of clinical and sub-clinical situations.

In the early years of school, pupils have a very positive approach towards any new topic. Very often, the first contact with mathematics in the Italian school risks giving a limited and somehow negative impression, generating long-lasting effects. In this paper, we report on a series of experiences carried out in a second-year class of a primary school that allowed us to introduce new concepts and approaches through games and puzzles. The aim was to stimulate the creativity and empower pupils. We have used simple materials and applied the "Puzzle-Based Learning" method. Despite the limited time devoted to this experience, the outcomes have been extremely positive.

This is the second of two papers on a novel physical science course for student teachers that develops and uses an imaginative approach to Primary Physical Science Education. General philosophical, cognitive, developmental, and scientific issues have been presented in the first paper; here, we briefly recapitulate the most important aspects. In the main part of the current paper, we present in some detail concrete elements of the implementation of the course at three Italian universities where Primary Physical Science Education has been taught for more than 6 years. After a brief description of the course structure, we discuss which parts of macroscopic physics are taught, and how this is done in lectures and labs. Most importantly, we show how the science is entwined with methods related to pedagogy and didactics that (1) help our students approach the science and (2) can be transferred quite readily to teaching children in kindergarten and primary school. These methods include the design of direct physical experience of forces of nature, embodied simulations, writing and telling of stories of forces of nature, and design and performance of Forces-of-Nature Theater plays. The paper continues with a brief description of feedback from former students who have been teaching for some time, and an in-depth analysis of the research and teaching done by one of the students for her master thesis. We conclude the paper by summarizing aspects of both the philosophy and the design of the course that we believe to be of particular value. Individuals with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs) have an increased risk of language delays and impairments. However, there are only a few data relative to their language development in early childhood. The present study aimed to investigate the preverbal skills shown by a group of 8-month-old children with SCTs to assess the presence of a possible early communicative delay. Moreover, the predictive role of early preverbal productions on later lexical development at 24 months was analysed. Twenty-six children with SCTs and 24 typically developing (TD) children participated in the study. Their use of vocal productions and gazes addressed to the communicative partner was assessed during a parent-child observation session held when the children were 8 months old. In addition, the children's word comprehension at 8 months and their word production at 24 months were indirectly assessed by a parental report. Children's word comprehension was similar in the two groups of children, whereas a significantly lower frequency per minute of gazes was found in children with SCTs than in TD children. A significantly lower proportion of children with SCTs showed the ability to produce babbling during the observation session, and significant differences were also found in the frequency of babbling utterances. No significant differences emerged among the subgroups of children with different types of SCTs. The predictive role of babbling on later lexical size was found in TD children but not in children with SCTs. This result could be probably explained by the small number of children in this group who could produce babbling utterances. The study leads to identify early signals of delay in the preverbal skills of children with SCTs. Early monitoring of their communicative development could help the clinicians in intervening with well-timed and targeted programmes.

The pandemic triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has produced worldwide interruptions of face-to-face teaching activity in both schools and universities. In Italy, the quarantine began in the second half of February 2020 and lasted for all the second semester of lectures. The University of Bologna, where all the authors of the present article are based, developed and activated several interfaces necessary to efficiently deliver online teaching courses with the utmost speed. The framework used by the authors is based on a common platform, Microsoft TEAMS, available to all teachers at Bologna University.

This work describes a two-year project carried out in an Italian technical high school. Through integrated work, the activity involved the efforts of different teachers and students, particularly those in the Chemical, Electronic, and IT departments. They merged their complementary skills to create an inexpensive device that quickly measures water hardness. The pedagogical aspect of this work aimed to support and reinforce development of the key competences for lifelong learning recommended by the European Commission, especially by strengthening the logical-mathematical, digital, and social skills of the students. The device made is based on an Arduino board connected to a red LED and an optical sensor. The device is able to read the intensity of light transmitted through the sample and to independently convert this output into the water hardness expressed in French degrees. The color change used as information transducer is due to the aggregation of negative gold nanoparticles induced by the bivalent cations in solution. Working in school laboratories under teacher supervision, students connected and troubleshot the hardware system, synthesized and characterized the gold nanoparticles, and developed the software. Finally, the system was assembled inside a box composed of a rigid container, a sample holder, and a touchscreen display. In this paper, we address the problem of enhancing young people's awareness of the mechanisms involving privacy in online social networks by presenting an innovative approach based on gamification. In particular, we propose a web application that allows kids and teenagers to experience the typical dynamics of information spread through a realistic interactive simulation. Under the supervision of the teacher, the students are inserted in a small artificial social graph, and through the different stages of game, they can post sentences with different levels of sensitivity, and "like" or share messages published by friends. At the end of game session, the application calculate multiple behavioral scores that can be used by the teacher to raise the curiosity of the students and stimulate discussions. Moreover, a complete interactive report is generated to analyze every individual action of the terminated game sessions. Our educational tool has been employed within an extensive experimental study involving more than 450 kids and 22 teachers in seven Italian primary school institutes. The results show that our approach is stimulating and supports teachers in helping kids discover and recognize potential privacy risks in social network activities.

Purpose: This paper aims to examine the content dimensions and methods of accelerating the entrepreneurial learning (EL) triggered by participating in learning events, such as factory tours. It particularly focuses on the Italian case of Open Factory -- an open-doors event of industrial manufacturing culture. Design/methodology/approach: This study adopted a qualitative approach using the "Gioia" methodology. Data were mainly collected through semi-structured interviews with firms participating in and organising Open Factory. Findings: The dimensions of EL are learning from critical reflection, experience and external sources, while the enablers of EL (factors that accelerate learning) are varied and connected to organisational learning in the form of individual-, team- and institutional-level learning. Based on these results, this paper proposes a model for developing EL triggered by participating in learning events. Practical implications: This research suggests developing appropriate organisational conditions inside firms, especially by entrepreneurs. These conditions are connected to sharing organisational values to foster learning, such as trust, commitment, involvement, awareness, sharing of experiences, exchange, autonomy and freedom. In addition, this study suggests ways that the EL model proposed in this research can be adapted to other learning events. Originality/value: This is the first study to connect factory tours to learning events and EL. It highlights the ways that participating in the Open Factory event created the chance to develop learning across organisational levels inside firms.

In recent years, the authors have witnessed the rebirth of board games. This contribution aims to investigate the educational potential of non-random board games in two ways: the comparison of performances of "expert adult players" and "adult non-players" through a correlation study (n=45) and the comparison between the results achieved by a group of children after 26 hours of game training (n=10) and those of a control group that carried out traditional educational activities (n=10) by using a nonrandomized control group pretest-posttest. Specifically, the findings relating to fluid intelligence, analytical and converging cognitive processes and creativity were compared. The results suggest that non-random board games can be an important stimulus for the cognitive functions, with a particular focus on the creative side, and therefore have an important educational function.

This is a description of the conceptual foundations used for designing a novel learning environment for mechanics implemented as an "Industrial Educational Laboratory"--called Fisica in Moto (FiM)--at the Ducati Foundation in Bologna. In this paper, we will describe the motivation for and design of the conceptual approach to mechanics used in the lab--as such, the paper is theoretical in nature. The goal of FiM is to provide an approach to the teaching of mechanics based upon imaginative structures found in continuum physics suitable to engineering and science. We show how continuum physics creates models of mechanical phenomena by using momentum and angular momentum as primitive quantities. We analyse this approach in terms of cognitive linguistic concepts such as conceptual metaphor and narrative framing of macroscopic physical phenomena. The model discussed here has been used in the didactical design of the actual lab and raises questions for an investigation of student learning of mechanics in a narrative setting.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common urological condition affecting aging men worldwide. Among the treatment options available for BPH, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the gold-standard invasive intervention. To reduce the TURP-related non-negligible morbidity, loss-of-ejaculation rate, hospitalization, blood loss and catheterization time several laser techniques have been developed, such as the Thulium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (ThuLEP). To investigate the efficacy outcomes of the ThuLEP as a treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) we performed a retrospective observational study at Moriggia Pelascini Hospital (Como, Italy) between January 2015 and September 2018. We included 265 patients who underwent ThuLEP at a specific hospital between defined dates. Data on various parameters, including post-void residue volume, peak urinary flow rate (Qmax), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) for urinary symptoms, IPSS Quality of Life (QoL) score, and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score for erectile dysfunction, were collected at baseline and follow-up. The analysis revealed significant improvements in voiding efficiency, urinary flow, urinary symptoms, quality of life, and erectile function following ThuLEP. Furthermore, certain baseline characteristics, such as post-void residue, peak urinary flow rate, age, prostate volume, and aspirin usage, were found to influence treatment outcomes. Despite the study's limitations, these findings contribute to understanding ThuLEP's effectiveness in managing BPH and can aid in making informed clinical decisions for patient care. Who are the NEET? How much do we know about this? What do institutions and the media know about them? How different definitions could get to shared policies? This paper tries to provide an initial overview of the situation regarding the NEET, through an analysis of the emerging international literature on the subject. Different definitions across nations are analyzed in order to reflect on the cultural differences and economics-work policies, in order to then analyze more in deep the Italian situation. In Italy, the phenomenon is still little known in society and, often, not recognized by the acronym NEET, with the many variables that define it, despite statistics showing a rise in numbers (26% of the total population for the age group considered).

This study evaluates the feasibility of a new food delivery service involving only food products with quality certification. In particular, through an ad hoc survey, it evaluates the influence of consumers' personal characteristics and choice motives on joining this innovative service and the willingness to pay of the respondents. A survey was completely anonymously and voluntarily administered during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. A total of 630 answers were collected. Logit and ordinal logit regression were carried out to analyze data. Women and respondents who have more leisure time are more likely to join the service. The analysis of choice motives suggests that consumers more concerned with food quality, and those devoting a higher weekly budget to buying groceries are more likely to be interested in the proposed service. Individuals willing to buy groceries based on certifications and organoleptic properties and people who habitually consume one to five meals outside were more likely to be willing to increase their weekly budget to join the service. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating the influence of personal characteristics and choice motives on an innovative food delivery service involving only certified quality products in Italy. Offering counselling to students is increasingly considered as a key academic service. However, the reduction of resources allocated to Italian universities emphasises the need to assess the quality of interventions. This paper presents data reporting the effectiveness of a university counselling service. A sample of 45 undergraduate students completed a cognitive-relational intervention at a counselling service in a University in the North of Italy. The project focused on the development of reappraisal skills and problem-solving strategies to manage difficult situations. The results showed a significant pre and post-intervention reduction in self-reported psychopathological symptoms (measured with Symptoms Check List 90-Revised) as well as in general levels of distress (measured with Clinical Outcome in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure). A significant increase in reappraisal levels, measured with the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, was observed, which is a focal element of the counselling intervention. There were no detectable changes in the level of suppression.

This article analyzes the "politics of experts"--or the struggle between scientific advisers to gain visibility and influence--in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy and the UK. Modifying classic studies of policy communities of interest groups and civil servants, we classify relevant policy experts in the two countries into the following categories: "core insiders," "specialist insiders," "peripheral insiders," and "outsiders." Within these categories, we distinguish between "high-profile" and "low-profile" experts, depending on media exposure. The comparison between the UK and Italian cases helps to identify how actors interpret and follow formal and informal "rules of the game." We identify a contest between experts to influence policy with reference to two competing "rules of the game." The first set of rules comes from government, while the second comes from science advice principles. These rules collide, such as when governments require secrecy and nonconfrontation and scientists expect transparency and independent criticism. Therefore, experts face dilemmas regarding which rules to favor: some accept the limits to their behavior to ensure insider access; others are free to criticize the policies that they struggle to influence. Eating Disorders (ED) are often severe illnesses entailing a heavy burden for families. Family therapy is recommended for young patients, but only a few studies have investigated therapeutic interventions with families tailored also to adult and longstanding patients. We recruited 87 families with daughters affected by an ED, aiming to assess the effectiveness of eight sessions of parent counselling. The primary outcome was the improvement of parents' coping abilities to achieve more effective support skills. Before treatment, 54% of parents showed poor coping resources whereas 43.7% of the sample improved after parent counselling. Parents with good coping resources responded significantly better to this treatment. Although future research is warranted, these preliminary findings support the effectiveness of parent counselling in ED.

The objective of this research is to provide an improved automated computational tool to study aphasic production. Using the speech production of Italian aphasic patients, the present study demonstrates the possibility of applying an integrated algorithm to automatically assess and generate error patterns typical of aphasic speech. Philological studies and aphasia studies share one common point: errors (or variants) are informative, and the intention of the authors (in the case of philology) or of the patients (in the case of aphasiology) is to be established. For this precise reason, the present study adapts a tool, originally used in computational philology for the alignment of textual variants (Boschetti, 2007, 2008), and puts it to use for assessing aphasic patient's speech error patterns. As is demonstrated, this tool is effective and analytical. The authors expect this to be beneficial for the use of analysing aphasic production in both clinical and academic settings. This paper discusses the results of field research focused on educational communication in the classroom. The research involved 11 primary schools in Italy. Nearly 100 hours of videotaped educational interactions were produced. The empirical analysis of the communication processes allowed us to analyse the main structures of educational communication. Mainstream researches on education analyse this subject in terms of the relationship between an educator and his or her pupils. Educators' behaviour and practices are discussed and produce normative insights on the way an educator should perform to transmit knowledge, basic values and social norms. We are concerned about the meaning of "relationship", that most works on education seem to be taken for granted as a trivial communicative input-output process where, upon a definite educator's input and through a specific function, pupils discharge some definite output. But educational communication cannot control its consequences; as its meanings are constructed by pupils, its outcomes are unpredictable. The data highlight the relevance of preparing educators for the complexity of the interconnections between educational relationships and communication; it would implicate the empowerment of education's reflexivity potential, giving to educators opportunities to recognize and exploit the potentialities of the situations that may emerge in educational settings. This article explores the role of voluntary quality assessments in higher education, underscoring their main features and potentialities, and showing that basic principles and guidelines can be customised in different countries or single institutions. The article extensively presents an assessment project developed at the University of Siena, the first integrated assessment of teaching and research quality of a whole university carried out in Italy. The article clearly highlights the relevance of quality assurance and performance measurement systems and the behavioural and organisational impacts they may have.

This article presents an in-depth qualitative case study on the negotiations underlying the introduction of an Independent Fiscal Institution and a Constitutional Balanced Budget Rule in Italy. The article looks at the interests of the relevant actors in the negotiation process of the Six Pack, Euro Plus Pact, Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance, and Two Pack by conducting interviews with the negotiators and analyses of parliamentary records and press declarations. The article demonstrates that functional mechanisms explain the outcome of such negotiations better than the consolidated literature of Liberal Intergovernmentalism, which expects that the preferences of the constellation of national actors are the key drivers of EU grand bargains impacting on member states' core state powers. As a matter of fact, Italian negotiators decided to accept the introduction of such instruments because they were potentially helpful in reducing macroeconomic risks both domestically and in other EU member states without having particular political costs, and not because domestic actors showcased clear preferences in favour of them. The results contribute to the academic debate on the integration of the Economic and Monetary Union by testing hypotheses deriving from traditional EU integration and International Relations literature and paves the way for future research allowing for a greater generalisation. In this paper we study the structural robustness of the Italian business system, using the Covid-19 pandemic as an exogenous event to test it. To this aim, we use the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristics) methodology, quite new for economics, to classify Italian firms according to their economic solidity, obtaining a taxonomy based on a wide set of characteristics. Our results show that the number of "Solid" firms is less than one-fifth of all Italian enterprises but they represent the lion's share in terms of employment and value added. "Fragile" and "At Risk" firms, albeit much less relevant for the creation of value added, account for over one-third of total employment, so they may be a worrisome issue for policymakers. Solidity conditions have clearly both a size and sector-related dimension: At Risk and Fragile conditions prevail among firms of smaller economic size (a broad definition of firm size) and among those operating in Construction and Other services. Finally, we find that factors such as firms' performance, and internal and external organization, although significant, play a less relevant role than economic size and digitalization/innovation in determining Italian firms' resilience to exogenous shocks such as the Covid-19 one. BACKGROUND: Noninvasive respiratory support (NRS) has been used to treat acute respiratory failure outside the ICU, but existing data have left many knowledge gaps for managing NRS in general wards. The primary objective of this study was to describe indications, duration of treatment, and outcomes of subjects treated with NRS outside the ICU. The secondary objective was to compare outcomes based on age < 80 or ≥ 80 y. METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted at Maggiore della Carita University Hospital in Novara, Italy, and included all patients treated with noninvasive ventilation (NIV) or CPAP outside the ICU from November 2017 to October 2018, with 1 year of follow-up. RESULTS: Of the 570 treatments performed, 383 subjects were analyzed, 136 NIV and 247 CPAP. Subjects' median (interquartile range [IQR]) age was 79 (72-85) y, and the main diagnoses of respiratory failure were cardiogenic pulmonary edema in 128 subjects (33%), pneumonia in 99 (26%), and COPD exacerbation in 52 (14%), with a median (IQR) treatment duration of 38 (16-74) h. Rapid response team visits lasted a median (IQR) 3 (2-6) d. Interface-related pressure lesions occurred in 13% of the subjects, in no case leading to definitive treatment discontinuation. Compared with the subjects ≥ 80 y old, the younger subjects had a median (IQR) longer hospitalization (16 [10-24] d vs 13 [9-20] d; P = .003) but slightly decreased in-hospital mortality (21% vs 30%; P = .061) and a decreased post-discharged 1-year mortality in hospital survivors (25% vs 41%; P = .002), differences observed only in the subjects treated with NIV. CONCLUSIONS: In a real-life setting outside the ICU, NIV and CPAP managed by a rapid response team with a daily visit in collaboration with ward staff highly experienced in NRS allowed us to treat the subjects without major complications. Kiwifruit is sold in different ways, based on pulp colour, packaging and cultivation process. On these basis, the purpose of this research is to examine the motivations in predicting purchase intentions of kiwifruits to improve its market. A field study was developed, involving about 900 consumers in Italy, North-East. Questionnaire data were created through a Likert scale. Questions (e.g., constructs and related items) focused on intentions at the base of purchasing different kiwifruits and recorded by face-to-face interview. Data were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Concerning the distinguishment between the choice reasons, the authors primary referred to the approach that sets out different types: Neophobia, Country Of Imagine, Attitude of consumers, Extrinsic and Intrinsic attributes of perceived Quality and, finally, the Behavioural Intention. We found out that Neophobia and the consumers Attitude along with Quality attributes influence the Behavioural Intention. This implies important managerial implications for new marketing strategies for kiwifruits, with the opportunity to take advantage of the potential findings got by our study and then translating it into a marketing strategy to be adopted by kiwifruit Companies. Social inequalities in health are known to be influenced by the socioeconomic status of the territory in which people live. In the context of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, this study is aimed at assessing the role of 5 area-level indicators in shaping the risk of contagion in the provinces of Milan and Lodi (Lombardy, Italy), namely: educational disadvantage, unemployment, housing crowding, mobility, and population density. The study area includes the municipalities at the origin of the first Italian epidemic outbreak. Data on COVID-19 patients from the Integrated Datawarehouse for COVID Analysis in Milan were used and matched with aggregate-level data from the National Institute of Statistics Italy (Istat). Multilevel logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between the census block-level predictors and COVID-19 infection, independently of age, sex, country of birth, and preexisting health conditions. All the variables were significantly associated with the outcome, with different effects before and after the lockdown and according to the province of residence. This suggests a pattern of socioeconomic inequalities in the outbreak, which should be taken into account in the eventuality of future epidemics to contain their spread and its related disparities. Aim of this study was to establish a consensus on DTA for CRCPM patients in Italy. a panel of 18 delegated members of centers afferent to Peritoneal Surface Malignancies Onco-team of the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology was established. A list of statements regarding the DTA of patients with CRCPM was prepared according to different activities and decision-making nodes with a defined entry and exit point. Consensus was obtained through RAND UCLA methodology. two different DTA were defined and approved according to the modality of presentation of CRCPM (synchronous and metachronous). A set of indicators to assess the quality of care for women operated for breast cancer was developed by an expert working group of the Italian Health Ministry in order to compare the Italian regions. A study to validate these indicators through their relationship with survival was carried out. The 16,753 women who were residents in three Italian regions (Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Lazio) and hospitalized for breast cancer surgery during 2011 entered the cohort and were followed until 2016. Adherence to selected recommendations (i.e., surgery timeliness, medical therapy timeliness, appropriateness of complementary radiotherapy and mammographic follow-up) was assessed. Multivariable proportional hazards models were fitted to estimate hazard ratios for the association between adherence with recommendations and the risk of all-cause mortality. Adherence to recommendations was 53% for medical therapy timeliness, 73% for appropriateness of mammographic follow-up, 74% for surgery timeliness and 82% for appropriateness of complementary radiotherapy. Risk reductions of 26%, 62% and 56% were observed for adherence to recommendations on medical therapy timeliness, appropriateness of complementary radiotherapy and mammographic follow-up, respectively. There was no evidence that mortality was affected by surgery timeliness. Clinical benefits are expected from improvements in adherence to the considered recommendations. Background: As the novel SARS-CoV-2 pandemic occurred, no specific treatment was yet available. Inflammatory response secondary to viral infection might be the driver of severe diseases. We report the safety and efficacy (in terms of overall survival and hospital discharge) of the anti-IL6 tocilizumab (TCZ) in subjects with COVID-19.Methods: This retrospective, single-center analysis included all the patients consecutively admitted to our Hospital with severe or critical COVID-19 who started TCZ treatment from March 13th to April 03rd, 2020. A 1:2 matching to patients not treated with TCZ was performed according to age, sex, severity of disease, P/F, Charlson Comorbidity Index and length of time between symptoms onset and hospital admittance. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests to compare the groups were applied. Kaplan Meier probability curves and Cox regression models for survival, hospital discharge and orotracheal intubation were used.Results: Seventy-four patients treated with TCZ were matched with 148 matched controls. They were mainly males (81.5%), Caucasian (82.0%) and with a median age of 59 years. The majority (69.8%) showed critical stage COVID-19 disease. TCZ use was associated with a better overall survival (HR 0.499 [95% CI 0.262-0.952], p = 0.035) compared to controls but with a longer hospital stay (HR 1.658 [95% CI 1.088-2.524], p = 0.019) mainly due to biochemical, respiratory and infectious adverse events.Discussion: TCZ use resulted potentially effective on COVID-19 in terms of overall survival. Socio-Natural Disasters are a global issue that need context-specific solutions. Similar hazards could indeed result in different (or no) disasters depending on the territorial peculiarities of the area they affect. Italy is an interesting case in this respect due to its physical geography. Three out of the four major seismic events of the last decades hit the rural areas of the country, in particular Central Apennines – territories that have been suffering from decades-old processes of ageing and depopulation. Within the conceptual framework of Community Resilience, our paper performs a time-sensitive quantitative analysis designed to observe resilience dynamics along different degrees of rurality in the area hit by the 1997 earthquake in Central Italy. In details, we adopt a quasi-experimental strategy, using population variation as a proxy for community resilience. BACKGROUND: This study assessed the effects of a new interface that combined CPAP 10 cm H2O by using a helmet with high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) at varying flows in healthy volunteers. Outcome measures included pharyngeal pressures, diaphragm kinetics, breathing frequency, the temperature inside the helmet, and comfort. METHODS: After baseline assessment during spontaneous breathing, HFNC was applied at flows of 30, 40, and 50 L/min. Successively, the volunteers underwent helmet CPAP at 10 cm H2O and CPAP + HFNC at flows of 30, 40, and 50 L/min. We measured the variations of pharyngeal pressures at end-expiration and end-inspiration, referenced to spontaneous breathing for HFNC and to CPAP for CPAP + HFNC, diaphragm displacement and thickness at end-expiration and thickness at end-inspiration, breathing frequency, the temperature inside the helmet, the occurrence of the fog effect, and comfort. RESULTS: Variations of pharyngeal pressures at end-inspiration changes were small overall and clinically unimportant. With the mouth closed, at increasing HFNC flow, variations of pharyngeal pressures at endexpiration increased during both HFNC (from 2.8 up to 7.7) and, to a lesser extent, CPAP + HFNC (from 2.7 up to 3.8) (P < .001 for all comparisons). These variations were attenuated during open-mouth breathing. HFNC > 40 L/min and CPAP + HFNC ≥ 40 L/min compared with spontaneous breathing and CPAP, respectively, increased diaphragm displacement (P = .001), thickness at end-inspiration and thickness at end-expiration (P < .003 for both). At all flows, breathing frequency was slightly, although significantly, lower with CPAP + HFNC than with HFNC alone (P < .003). The temperature inside the helmet increased slightly and insignificantly at flows of ≤40 L/min with CPAP + HFNC compared with CPAP alone. The fog effect never occurred, whereas comfort was always rated as optimal, without differences between trials. CONCLUSIONS: CPAP + HFNC was well tolerated, with no adverse effects. • Forest diversity is hypothesized to enhance vitality of trees. • Defoliation is currently assessed in European forests as proxy of tree vitality. • Relationships between tree diversity and defoliation vary per site and per species. • In Italy, there is a general trend of more defoliation in high diversity stands. • Tree diversity is more beneficial in stressful conditions and after stress events. Tree diversity is found to enhance ecosystem functions in forests and increase the resistance and resilience of trees subjected to environmental stress, including climate change. This effect, however, can be different depending on tree species assemblages and ecological contexts. The pan-European programme for monitoring forest health (ICP Forests) considers crown defoliation as an indicator of tree vitality. Only a few studies have analysed the role of tree diversity in crown defoliation, with contrasting results. This paper analyses the relationships between defoliation and forest diversity in a country (Italy) characterised by heterogeneous bioclimatic and edaphic characteristics (from Mediterranean to Alpine) and with a wide range of forest tree species and functional groups. National-scale results show that defoliation increased in more diverse forest stands. This result can be explained by the fact that the tree mixtures reflect varying ecological conditions in heterogeneous environments. The most relevant factors that explain tree defoliation at the national level, investigated through random forest analysis, were the geographic position, tree species identity and forest stand age and structure. Cluster analysis was applied to identify homogeneous groups of plots based on their ecological and vegetation features. Four clusters were selected. Within each homogeneous cluster, the crown defoliation of the tree species showed different and contrasting patterns, changing their relationships with diversity over time. A beneficial role of diversity on defoliation (i.e. decrease of defoliation) has been observed in Quercus ilex , growing in Mediterranean conditions, and Picea abies in Alpine areas after dry periods. • Natural mortality in Italian forests amounts on average to 20.7% of GAI. • Volume losses to mortality are poorly represented by number mortality rates. • The volume of trees dying from competition is 29% of mean tree volume in the stand. • Mortality rates (as a fraction both of stand density and of volume) decline with age. • All measures of mortality are highly skewed among stands. Tree mortality plays a key role in forest development and function, reducing net annual increments (NAI) even in the absence of major disturbances, although its extent in semi-natural forests is often overlooked. While losses are most commonly quantified as a fraction of stand density, in many cases this could prove misleading due to the non-random nature of competition and mortality, and a quantification of volume mortality rates would provide additional insight. Of great interest is also the quantification of losses relative to gross annual increments (GAI), both from an ecological perspective and in order to better assess net increments and the sustainability margins of forest management. All three perspectives were compared in the present study, based on available data from permanent sample plots across Italy covering a wide range of species, ages and management types. The frequency distribution of all three measures of mortality was highly skewed, with a high number of stands showing little losses; this was apparently not the result of an insufficient monitoring area or time span. Mortality resulted in an average loss of 2.25 m3 ha−1 yr−1, which corresponds to 20.7% of GAI. Mortality rates by number and by volume amounted on average to 1.35% and 0.51%, respectively, demonstrating the need to distinguish between the two perspectives. Two rather distinct clusters were apparent in the relationship between the two mortality rates, with a 1:1 relationship in thinned or disturbed stands but much lower volume mortality rates when self-thinning prevailed, resulting in the loss of many small, suppressed trees. When considering volume mortality rates, however, the relative contribution from dominant or co-dominant trees to total stand mortality was much more important, as a result of their larger volume. If extrapolated to national level, these results could help refine current estimates of net annual increments in Italian forests, and of the margin of sustainability of current harvest levels, which would amount to 45% of NAI. Abstract Background Central pancreatectomy (CP) is a parenchyma-sparing surgery for benign or low-grade malignant pancreatic tumors. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of the procedure and to analyze the long-term pancreatic function. The age-specific incidence ratio (IR) was calculated based on the incidence of diabetes mellitus in the general Italian population of Italy. Materials and methods Patients submitted to CP from January 1990 to December 2017 at the Department of General and Pancreatic Surgery of the Pancreas Institute of Verona, Italy, were evaluated. Results The final population was composed of 116 patients. There was a clear prevalence of females (74.1%), the mean age was 48 ± 15 years and the main indication for surgery was a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (45.7%). A pancreojejunal anastomosis was performed more frequently than a pancreogastric anastomosis (78.4% vs 11.6%). The mean length of stay was 20 ± 33 days. The overall abdominal complications rate was 62%. The frequency of clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (grades B and C) was 26.7%. The mortality rate was 0%. The rate of R1-resection was 0.8%, as was the recurrence rate. After a mean follow-up of 12.8 years ±6.5, 6 patients developed new-onset diabetes (NODM, 7.5%), and the IR was 1.36 (95%CI 0.49–2.96). Conclusions CP is associated with high rates of abdominal complications, however, considering the amount of the normal pancreas that was spared, it might be indicated for selected benign or low-malignancy pancreatic tumors. Carbon capture and sequestration represents a key decarbonisation option, particularly for large-scale fossil-based industry sectors (e.g. cement, steel, and oil refineries). Carbon capture and sequestration networks have nonetheless raised concerns regarding the possibility of leakages, especially in high seismic-risk regions. In this study, a multi-objective mixed integer linear programming modelling framework is developed to minimise the cost and the seismic risk associated with the deployment of a carbon capture and sequestration infrastructure in Italy. The most significant industrial carbon dioxide sources (23 cement plants, 7 refineries, and 2 steel mills) are included in the model. The optimisation variables comprise capture technologies, transport options (onshore vs. offshore pipelines), and the choice of onshore and offshore deep saline aquifers for sequestration. Three carbon dioxide emission reduction targets (20 %, 50 %, 80 %) are considered to assess the optimal design configurations in terms of either cost or seismic risk. Results show that the seismic risk optimum determines an increase in total cost ranging between 10 % (for an 80 % reduction target) and 65 % (for a 20 % reduction target) with respect to the economic optimum. Considering only offshore sequestration leads to cost increase between 20 % and 30 % with respect to solutions accepting onshore sequestration, too. The northern Adriatic Sea is well known for mercury (Hg) contamination mainly due to historical Hg mining which took place in Idrija (Slovenia). The formation of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) and its subsequent volatilisation can reduce the amount of Hg available in the water column. In this work, the diurnal patterns of both DGM production and gaseous elemental Hg (Hg0) fluxes at the water-air interface were seasonally evaluated in two selected environments within this area, a highly Hg-impacted, confined fish farm (VN: Val Noghera, Italy) and an open coastal zone less impacted by Hg inputs (PR: Bay of Piran, Slovenia). A floating flux chamber coupled with a real-time Hg0 analyser was used for flux estimation in parallel with DGM concentrations determination through in-field incubations. Substantial DGM production was observed at VN (range = 126.0–711.3 pg L−1) driven by both strong photoreduction and possibly dark biotic reduction, resulting in higher values in spring and summer and comparable concentrations throughout both day and night. Significantly lower DGM was observed at PR (range = 21.8–183.4 pg L−1). Surprisingly, comparable Hg0 fluxes were found at the two sites (range VN = 7.43–41.17 ng m−2 h−1, PR = 0–81.49 ng m−2 h−1), likely due to enhanced gaseous exchanges at PR thanks to high water turbulence and to the strong limitation of evasion at VN by water stagnation and expected high DGM oxidation in saltwater. Slight differences between the temporal variation of DGM and fluxes indicate that Hg evasion is more controlled by factors such as water temperature and mixing conditions than DGM concentrations alone. The relative low Hg losses through volatilisation at VN (2.4–4.6% of total Hg) further confirm that static conditions in saltwater environments negatively affect the ability of this process in reducing the amount of Hg retained in the water column, therefore potentially leading to a greater availability for methylation and trophic transfer. The Vercelli district is one of the most technologically advanced rice cultivation areas in the world, but the sector is causing serious environmental problems. This study aimed to acquire information on the ecological impact during conversion from conventional to organic farming, using the nematode community as an indicator of soil quality. An organic farming system managed with a 5-year crop rotation, based on rice (4-years) and soybean (1-year), was compared, during the fourth and fifth year after conversion, with conventional and integrated farming systems, both based on monoculture of rice. The relationship between soil biology and the type of farming system was explored by examining the nematode community, assessing maturity, plant parasitic, basal, enrichment, structure, channel indices and diversity-weighted abundance. No significant differences in total soil organic C, total N and C/N ratio were found between the management systems. Total nematode abundance was not strongly affected by the conversion, but the response of the nematodes to change varied with the trophic groups, year by year. The conversion from conventional to organic farming represented a disturbance factor. The introduction of the soybean crop determined a marked change in nematode composition; the persistent nematode population was only 20%, while the colonizer reached 80%. The indices showed that the nematode community varied between the farming system; in both years maturity index was lower in organic than in other management systems. Aim: Non-healing wounds are characterized by a high socio-medical impact, with a prevalence of up to 5% after the age of 65, a high rate of non-healing (20% at two years) and a very high rate of recurrences (67%). The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how microsurgery can be a valid therapeutic option in carefully selected patients, guaranteeing complete time-effective healing and functional recovery. Method: Patients were selected on the basis of election criteria, such as the absence of granulation/healing signs after adequate debridement and conservative treatment, no relevant comorbidities, good compliance, restoration of a pre-existing function. All patients underwent accurate instrumental diagnostic classification through Echo-color Doppler, TcPO2, CT Angiogram, deep sampling with consequent targeted antibiotic therapy in presence of signs of local infection, angiography in view of the need for revascularization. Results / Discussion: Patients with non-healing wounds from various aetiologies such as diabetic foot, chronic osteomyelitis, complicated traumatic wounds, surgical dehiscences with exposure of fixation devices were included in the study. The parameters of choice for the most suitable flap were good vascularisation to guarantees adequate blood flow, thickness that allows the use of footwear, load and traction resistance. In all cases treated with microsurgical reconstruction, complete healing was obtained, with restoration of functionality and no recurrence. In no case was there any loss of the free flap. Conclusion: In the treatment of non-healing wounds microsurgery represents the final phase of a broader path, which is in fact based on a multidisciplinary step by step approach that starts from an accurate general classification of the patient, wound preparation, careful surgical planning, patient education and follow up. Aim: Arterial ulcers represent 10% of all skin lesions of the lower limb, but they are burdened by high mortality and risk of major amputation, and healing could be a difficult and slow process even after revascularization. Our aim is to describe the effectiveness of dermal substitutes in promoting wound healing of arterial ulcers after revascularization and debridement. Method: Between March 2021 and October 2022, 121 patients affected by chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) underwent open or endovascular revascularization. 20 of them, all staged as III or IV and presenting with arterial foot ulcerations classified as W2 or W3 according to the WIfI classification, also received surgical debridement (4), amputation of one or more digits (13) or forefoot amputation (3), followed by application of a dual-layer dermal regenerating matrix consisting in atelocollagen and a silicone film1. The indications for its application were extensive tissue loss, or dehiscence of the surgical wound following amputation (see figures below). The matrix was maintained for one week, then the silicon layer was removed and the wound was managed with non-adherent dressings. Results: All procedure were successful, with improvement of the ankle-brachial index (ABI) and regression of ischemic pain at rest. 14 patients had complete healing and 6 significant wound reduction (>50%). No surgical revision or more proximal amputations were needed over a mean follow-up of 12 months. This study investigates the use of an evaluation model able to estimate the possibilities of reducing energy consumption and emissions of the building sector exploiting renewable energy sources. Specific attention is given to the use of ground source heat pumps in the urban context, proposing an ex-ante evaluation of different scenarios to identify the most balanced one in terms of energy, economic and environmental effects. The model is applied to a case study in Northern Italy to show how it can be used to support local administrations in energy urban planning, fitting economically and environmentally sustainable technologies.
