The paper aims to present the geology of the western part of the Classical Karst (NW Dinarides), located at the border between Slovenia and Italy. The work is based on archive, published and new data collected by Slovenian and Italian researchers within several scientific national and Cross Border Cooperation projects. The map, produced at a scale of 1:50,000, summarizes the lithological and structural setting and is supplemented by three geological cross-sections of the study area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An interdisciplinary study of the archaeological landscape of the Trieste area (northeastern Italy), mainly based on airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR), ground penetrating radar (GPR), and archaeological surveys, has led to the discovery of an early Roman fortification system, composed of a big central camp (San Rocco) flanked by two minor forts. The most ancient archaeological findings, including a Greco-Italic amphora rim produced in Latium or Campania, provide a relative chronology for the first installation of the structures between the end of the third century B.C. and the first decades of the second century B.C. whereas other materials, such as Lamboglia 2 amphorae and a military footwear hobnail (type D of Alesia), indicate that they maintained a strategic role at least up to the mid first century B.C. According to archaeological data and literary sources, the siteswere probably established in connection with the Roman conquest of the Istria peninsula in 178-177 B.C. They were in use, perhaps not continuously, at least until the foundation of Tergeste, the ancestor of Trieste, in the mid first century B.C. The San Rocco site, with its exceptional size and imposing fortifications, is the main known Roman evidence of the Trieste area during this phase and could correspond to the location of the first settlement of Tergeste preceding the colony foundation. This hypothesis would also be supported by literary sources that describe it as a phrourion (Strabo, V, 1, 9, C 215), a term used by ancient writers to designate the fortifications of the Roman army. Abstract: In 2007, we installed seven micro-erosion meter stations on a vertical limestone slab located in the intertidal zone in the Gulf of Trieste (Italy) in order to observe rock surface changes at elevations ranging between −0.75m and +0.75mm.s.l. (Furlani et al., 2010). In this paper, we present the micro-erosion metre (MEM) data for most months between February 2008 and May 2013 and the traversing micro-erosion metre (TMEM) data collected twice a year since 2007. The MEM and TMEM data were consistent and indicated that the mean lowering rate ranged between 0.007mm/yr and 0.205mm/yr and −0.001mm/yr and 0.260mm/yr, according to the elevation of the stations. Maximum downwearing rates were observed in the mid-lower intertidal zone and decreased upward and downward. The natural trend of erosion started in 2010, after 2years of exposure, when the slab, formerly smoothed and not colonized by marine organisms, started to be acclimated to the local environment. After 2010, the erosion rate increased to a maximum of 0.31mm/yr. This value can be more representative for long-term studies and is similar to the downwearing rates locally collected on natural limestone surfaces. This dataset represents the first collection of downwearing rates mainly measured using MEMs, but also TMEMs on vertical limestone surfaces in an intertidal zone and provides interesting new information for addressing the debate on notch genesis and development. The shape of a tidal notch has been found to be consistent with the distribution of erosion rates along the slab, even if the present-day notch was not surveyed in the Gulf of Trieste due to the local tectonic subsidence. Abstract: A comparison among lowering rates collected in the limestones of the northeastern Adriatic Region (Italy and Croatia) gives a picture of the erosion patterns in the inland and coastal Classical Karst and Istrian Karst. Erosion rates were measured using either a micro-erosion meter or a traversing micro-erosion meter. Beginning from a large dataset spread over a maximum of 26 years, significant differences in limestone lowering rates have been recognized in the surveyed area: the mean lowering rate for the inland Classical Karst area is 0.018 mm/yr whereas in the inland Istrian Karst it is 0.009 mm/yr. In the coastal sectors, the mean erosion rate varies between 0.14 mm/yr in the Gulf of Trieste and 0.04 mm/yr in the sites located along the Istrian shoreline. These differences are probably due to the climatic setting of the Classical Karst area (Mediterranean Continental to Sub-alpine climate) and Istrian Peninsula (Mediterranean climate). Moreover, along the coasts of the Gulf of Trieste there are many submarine springs which are absent along the Istrian coast. It is hypothesized that these underwater springs stress the effect of rainfall along the coast, which is both direct (rain on the measurement site) and mainly indirect (freshwater outflow from submarine springs). Higher lowering rates were surveyed during autumn; rainfall, therefore also freshwater outflow from submarine springs, is particularly high at the end of the summer and in autumn. In NE Italy, fast-moving landslides represent a significant threat both to the population and to the built environment. In the eastern portion of the Italian Alps, rockfalls are common and are often responsible for casualties or severe damage to infrastructure. To assess rockfall susceptibility, field surveys are crucial to accurately recognize the source areas of falling rock phenomena, to quantify the volumes of unstable blocks and identify the possible block trajectories.This work takes in detailed geological and geomorphological mapping, through the identification of dislodged blocks, fractures and fallen blocks on a much-frequented limestone cliff in the Trieste Karst used as a climbing spot. Moreover, a popular tourist path (the Napoleonica) lies at the foot of the climbing cliffs.The first identification of the most hazardous sections of the climbing sites were performed starting from field surveys and aerial photo analysis, morphometric and geomechanical characterization of the rock masses together with mapping activities.The field data were implemented with the analysis of UAV (Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle) images and videos; this innovative technique allows to reach and study hard-to-reach sites with high resolution and precision. The main aim of the study is to perform a semiautomatic morphometric and geomechanical characterization of two of the most hazardous sections. This analysis allowed to extract orientation and spacing of discontinuities of the studied walls and to recognize and measure unstable or pre-dislodged blocks by means of 3D orthophotos obtained from the UAV image processing. The main output of this work is a GIS-based map that will be the starting point for future 2D and 3D simulations in order to provide a rockfall susceptibility evaluation of the study area.Moreover, the methodology used could serve as model for the study of the other popular climbing sites, where the geological, geomorphological and climatic conditions are similar. The latters in fact are the predisposing factors to slope failures and consequently could cause casualties during climbing activities.The final outputs could form an important basis for the growth of investment in tourism policies aimed at increasing the quality of local attractions.
