The aim of our study was to investigate how endodontics is taught in Italian universities. An online survey was conducted from August to December 2021. A comparison between courses led by full or associate professors (Group 1) versus courses led by other figures, such as researchers or temporary lecturers (Group 2), was made. A total of 28 out of 36 schools participated (78%). In most schools, endodontics is taught in the fifth year to 15–29 students. All schools planned pre-clinical endodontic training, and in 25/28 schools (89.3%), clinical endodontic training was also provided. The course programs varied among schools, and significantly more hours were allocated to teaching nonsurgical root canal treatment in Group 1 schools than in Group 2 schools. The average numbers of hours of preclinical and clinical training were 34.3 ± 23.6 and 84.1 ± 76.7, respectively. All schools used rotary NiTi files in their clinical training, and the vertical condensation of hot gutta-percha was the most frequently taught obturation technique. As expected, the scenario of endodontic education in Italian universities was variable and needs harmonization. Courses led by full or associate professors seem to be better structured. The article describes the case of a 34-year-old healthy woman presented with diffuse and painful oral lesions, which appeared two days after the first administration of Pfizer BioNTech SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Topics discussed include finding on clinical examination, possibility that SARS-CoV-2 can infect and replicate in oral kieratinocytes and fibroblasts, causing oral manifestations, and the use of polysorbate 80 to make the m-RNA fat-soluble.

Objective: The aim of this randomized two-center study was to compare quantic molecular resonance scalpel (QMRS) with traditional scalpel (TS) for the surgical treatment of labial mucoceles, in terms of impact on quality of life and postoperative pain (primary outcomes) and postsurgical lip paresthesia and recurrence of the lesion (secondary outcomes). Method and Materials: Eighty-five consecutive patients with labial mucoceles were randomized to receive traditional (46) or QMRS surgery (39) in two Italian University Hospital Centers. Patients were asked to complete three different forms during the first week after surgery to evaluate quality of life and postoperative pain. Periodic follow-up examinations were conducted at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery, in order to detect recurrence of lesion and/or lip paresthesia. Results: Regarding the symptoms reported during the first week after surgery, questionnaires given to the patients and the mean painkiller consumption did not demonstrate any statistically significant differences within the two groups. Women treated with QMRS reported a worse experience than women treated with TS (P < .05). Among all the mucoceles treated, during the follow-up period of 3 months, one that had been eliminated with the cold scalpel was seen to relapse, versus none of those treated with the QMRS (P = 1.0). We reported a localized and terminal paresthesia of the labial mucosa close to the surgical site in 10.58% of the total patients. Comparing the QMRS with TS, we observed a greater incidence of neurologic complications with the latter technique (P = .035). Conclusion: This is the first prospective randomized study to report outcome data and 3-month follow-up of a cohort of patients suffering from labial mucoceles. QMRS for surgical removal of labial mucoceles seems to be comparable to traditional scalpel in terms of postoperative quality of life, pain, and postsurgical lip paresthesia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although other immunosuppressive agents have been recently introduced (e.g., tacrolimus), it has been calculated that in the next decade about 1 million people will still be taking cyclosporin (CsA). The association between gingival overgrowth (GO) and the use of CSA is still not clear. In the present study we evaluated the prevalence and the degree of GO in a group of Italian renal transplant patients and the possible relationship between gingival lesions and demographic, oral, systemic, and pharmacological variables. Methods: One hundred twenty-one renal transplant recipients receiving immunosuppressive therapy with CsA were evaluated in this study. Patients were classified in two groups. In the first (screening group), we included all those patients referred by the Parma University Renal Transplant Center for a general oral checkup, with no specific indications for GO. The second group (non-screening group) included all those patients who specifically had been referred to the Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine Unit because of GO. We considered the following variables: gender, daily CsA dose, duration of immunosuppressive treatment, CsA plasma concentration, concomitant use of another immunosuppressive agent (azathioprine), use of other GO inducers (calcium channel blockers, anti-epileptic drugs), oral hygiene scores, and other drugs taken at the time of oral examination. Results: Fisher's exact test and chi square test demonstrated that in the screening group, duration of immunosuppressive treatment and oral hygiene scores were associated both with the prevalence and the high GO scores (P1DIT <0.0001; P2DIT = 0.0084; P2hyg = 0.0068). In the screening group, concomitant use of CsA and azathioprine is related to a low development degree of GO (P = 0.0088). In the non-screening group, we found a significant association between poor oral hygiene and high degree of GO (P = 0.0349). Conclusion: In addition to a probable genetic predisposition, duration of immunosuppressive treatment and oral hygiene status are the most important variables related to development and degree of GO during the use of CsA in this study. The article presents a case study of a 52-year-old woman with complaints about the presence of a dark alteration of her oral mocusa in her cheeks and the ventral surface of her tongue after an incisional biopsy. Bilateral and diffused brown pigmentation of the buccal and ventral tongue mocusae has been found on physical examination. Hispathological findings has linked the condition with orthokeratosis/parakeratosis. Moreover, the case of oral postinflammatory hyperpigmentation was confirmed.

Introduction: Analyzing highly-cited articles can provide a retrospective assessment of research evolution and predict future developments. The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most-cited articles in dentistry by authors with an Italian affiliation., Evidence Acquisition: All the articles published in journals indexed under the Scopus category "Dentistry" and with at least one author affiliated to any Italian institution were searched in September 2022. The 100 most-cited articles were selected and relevant data were extracted and summarized. The analysis of co-authorship at country level and co-occurrence of keywords was carried out., Evidence Synthesis: The 100 most-cited articles were published between 1976 and 2020. The number of citations ranged from 235 to 1683, with a mean of 361. The series included 25 citation classics (>400 citations). The majority of articles were classified as expert opinion/narrative reviews (N.=47). Almost half of the articles refer to three predominant disciplines which were implantology, periodontology and restorative dentistry. Only two articles were single-authored. In 30 articles, all the authors had an Italian affiliation and the US was the most frequent country for non-Italian authors. Only one article was published in journals owned by a non-Italian publisher., Conclusions: The present series of highly-cited articles confirms the important role of Italy in dental research. We found an absence of correlation between the level of evidence and the number of citations and a non-homogeneous distribution of highly-cited papers in the different dental disciplines. The majority of articles included in the series shared international co-authorship and were published in high-impact journals.
