This study investigated the occurrence of selected metals and metalloids (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) in radio-dated sediment cores from a coastal lagoon (Lagoon of Venice, Italy) by critically reviewing and grouping available data. Pre-industrial concentrations (pICs, estimated for the period before the early 1900s) for the Venice lagoon are identified according to the 2σ statistical procedure (2σ-pICs), i.e., the upper bound values of the dataset distribution. Results show the following 2σ-pICs (µg/g, d.w.): As 15,9; Cd 0,6; Cr 38,0; Cu 18,1; Hg 1,1; Ni 32,9; Pb 29,4; Zn 94,5. Most of the estimated 2σ-pICs are comparable to previously assessed background values. In the case of Hg, on the contrary, 2σ-pIC is remarkably higher than background values, reflecting a significant anthropogenic contribution also in the pre-industrial period. The results of this work may support the evaluation of the temporal evolution of metal concentrations in sediments of the Venice lagoon. Background: Unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) are increasingly identified and are an important health-care burden; in the past they were commonly treated by surgical clipping, but nowadays endovascular coil embolization is increasingly employed as an alternative., Methods: The Unruptured Aneurysms Italian Study (UAIS) is a multicentric cooperative prospective study aimed to delineate the "State of the Art" of UIAs treatment in Italy. 51 Italian Neurosurgical and Neuroradiological Units, representatives of all 20 Italian regions are involved in the Study., Results: UAIS started on June 2003 and ended on July 2007. 1138 patients were collected by that date, but 181 were ruled-out due to severe violation of the protocol; 957 had complete data and could be statistically evaluated., Conclusions: UAIS demonstrates that the treatment of UAs, as performed in Italy as a Nation, is effective in improving long-term outcome vs. natural history, particularly in aneurysms larger than 7 mm.

Unlabelled: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) alleviates symptoms of many neurological disorders by applying electrical impulses to the brain by means of implanted electrodes, generally put in place using a conventional stereotactic frame. A new image guided disposable mini-stereotactic system has been designed to help shorten and simplify DBS procedures when compared to standard stereotaxy. A small number of studies have been conducted which demonstrate localization accuracies of the system similar to those achievable by the conventional frame. However no data are available to date on the economic impact of this new frame., Aim: The aim of this paper was to develop a computational model to evaluate the investment required to introduce the image guided mini-stereotactic technology for stereotactic DBS neurosurgery., Methods: A standard DBS patient care pathway was developed and related costs were analyzed. A differential analysis was conducted to capture the impact of introducing the image guided system on the procedure workflow. The analysis was carried out in five Italian neurosurgical centers., Results: A computational model was developed to estimate upfront investments and surgery costs leading to a definition of the best financial option to introduce the new frame. Investments may vary from Euro 1.900 (purchasing of Image Guided [IG] mini-stereotactic frame only) to Euro 158.000.000. Moreover the model demonstrates how the introduction of the IG mini-stereotactic frame doesn't substantially affect the DBS procedure costs.

The potential carcinogenic risk at the workplaces is a primary interest of occupational health, but some questions are also controversially discussed. Particularly, in the plastic forming industry a great attention was directed to the hot processing and their possible exposure to monomers, some of which were classified as carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and/or the European Union (EU). In Lombardy, a study on occupational exposure to chemical carcinogens in the plastic forming industry was planned during last years. The aim was to recognize and promote preventive technical and medical solutions, basing on efficacy. By an investigation at workplace supported with standardized questionnaires, the presence of chemical carcinogens was registered in 59% of a representative sample of firms; but an effective possibility of exposure was found only for 34% of cases. The evaluation of exposure to monomers by air monitoring (acrylonitrile, 1,3-butadiene, styrene, formaldehyde), involving a representative sample of factory with ABS and formaldehydic resins processing, showed low level exposure, because the common hygienic prevention measures were applied; some particular occupation shoved greater exposure to formaldehyde.

We carried out an epidemiologic research about M. Pneumoniae infection from 1977 to 1983: determination of CF antibodies has been performed by the Bacteriology and Virology Laboratory (Prof. Lamanna, USL 10/D, Florence). Serum samples were collected by the laboratory itself and by hospitals and university departments of Florence and neighbouring communes. Our research confirms cyclic behaviour of M. Pneumoniae infection: we could follow up a 3 years long epidemic after a previous 2 years long endemic disease. We found a major sera-positive rate for M. Pneumoniae in children than in adults. In the same period we carried out a clinical-statistical study on 122 children (80 males and 42 females) admitted to the Pediatric Institute "A. Meyer" in Florence because of an infection due to M. Pneumoniae. The most affected age range sems to be included between 5 and 10 years. Pneumonia is the commonest clinical feature of M. Pneumoniae infection (85.2%): furthermore, we must point out some cases in 0-2 years-old subjects. In our patients, clinical features, X-ray findings and laboratory tests strictly agree with those reported by other authors. We treated all our patients with erythromycin: in three weeks we obtained thee normalization of clinical patterns and X-ray findings in all cases.
