Evapotranspiration (ET) represents one of the essential processes controlling the exchange of energy by terrestrial vegetation, providing a strong connection between energy and water fluxes. Different methodologies have been developed in order to measure it at different spatial scales, ranging from individual plants to an entire watershed. In the last few years, several methods and approaches based on remotely sensed data have been developed over different ecosystems for the estimation of ET. In the present work, we outline the correlation between ET measured at four eddy covariance (EC) sites in Italy (situated either in forest or in grassland ecosystems) and (1) the emissivity contrast index (ECI) based on emissivity data from thermal infrared spectral channels of the MODIS and ASTER satellite sensors (CAMEL data-set); (2) the water deficit index (WDI), defined as the difference between the surface and dew point temperature modeled by the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) data. The analysis covers a time-series of 1 to 7 years depending on the site. The results showed that both the ECI and WDI correlate to the ET calculated through EC. In the relationship WDI-ET, the coefficient of determination ranges, depending on the study area, between 0.5 and 0.9, whereas it ranges between 0.5 and 0.7 when ET was correlated to the ECI. The slope and the sign of the latter relationship is influenced by the vegetation habitat, the snow cover (particularly in winter months) and the environmental heterogeneity of the area (calculated in this study through the concept of the spectral variation hypothesis using Rao's Q heterogeneity index). Background: Universal serological screening in endemic areas is essential for preventing Chagas disease transmission by transfusions, while in non-endemic areas, screening is provided only to donors exposed to the infection risk. In this respect, in order to ensure high and uniform standards of quality and safety of blood components, the Italian National Blood Centre conducted a survey to detect information on management of donors at risk of Chagas disease and on the current transfusion risk. Methods: The National Blood Centre conducted a survey on preventive measures for Chagas disease in the years 2020–2021. Results: Survey results are broadly representative of the national situation; out of 24,269 tested donors, only 15 donors were confirmed positive (0.4 out of 100,000 donors). This rate is lower than the number of positive donors (72/100,000) for transfusion transmissible infections (HIV, HBV, HCV, and T. pallidum) in the same period. Furthermore, the number of T. cruzi positive blood donors is lower than the T. cruzi positive subjects in the general population. Conclusions: In Italy, T. cruzi infection transfusion risk may be considered still very low, and this is confirmed by the absence of documented transfusion transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fusarium Head Blight is a devastating disease of wheat caused by a complex of Fusarium species producing a wide range of mycotoxins. Fusarium species occurrence is variable in different geographical areas and subjected to a continuous evolution in their distribution. A total of 141 durum wheat field samples were collected in different regions of Italy in three years, and analyzed for Fusarium species and related mycotoxin occurrence. Mycotoxin contamination varied according to year and geographical origin. The highest mycotoxin contamination was detected in 2014. Deoxynivalenol was detected with an average of 240 µg/kg only in Central and Northern Italy; and T-2 and HT-2 toxins with an average of 150 µg/kg in Southern Italy. Approximately 80% of samples from Southern Italy in 2013/2014 showed T-2 and HT-2 levels over the EU recommended limits. Fusarium graminearum occurred mostly in Northern Italy, while F. langsethiae occurred in Southern Italy. These data showed that a real mycotoxin risk related to Fusarium exists on the whole in Italy, but varies according with geographical areas and environmental conditions. Consistent monitoring of Fusarium species and related mycotoxin distribution on a long period is worthwhile to generate more accurate knowledge on Fusarium species profile and mycotoxins associated and better establish the climatic change impact on wheat Fusarium epidemiology. The boreal hemisphere has been experiencing increasing extreme hot and dry conditions over the past few decades, consistent with anthropogenic climate change. The continental extension of this phenomenon calls for tools and techniques capable of monitoring the global to regional scales. In this context, satellite data can satisfy the need for global coverage. The main objective we have addressed in the present paper is the capability of infrared satellite observations to monitor the vegetation stress due to increasing drought and heatwaves in summer. We have designed and implemented a new water deficit index (wdi) that exploits satellite observations in the infrared to retrieve humidity, air temperature, and surface temperature simultaneously. These three parameters are combined to provide the water deficit index. The index has been developed based on the Infrared Atmospheric Sounder Interferometer or IASI, which covers the infrared spectral range 645 to 2760 cm−1 with a sampling of 0.25 cm−1. The index has been used to study the 2017 heatwave, which hit continental Europe from May to October. In particular, we have examined southern Italy, where Mediterranean forests suffer from climate change. We have computed the index's time series and show that it can be used to indicate the atmospheric background conditions associated with meteorological drought. We have also found a good agreement with soil moisture, which suggests that the persistence of an anomalously high water deficit index was an essential driver of the rapid development and evolution of the exceptionally severe 2017 droughts. Objectives: To estimate the number of actually Severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) infected blood donors applying a statistical forecasting model. Background: Following the outbreak of the SARS‐CoV‐2 epidemic, a drop in blood donation has been observed. It is crucial to determine the actual number of potential SARS‐CoV‐2‐positive donors to define the measures and ensure adequate blood supply. Methods: The cumulative incidence of SARS‐CoV‐2 positivity, calculated on the general population, was applied to the donor population by estimating the number of positive subjects. The calculation model was validated by the linear interpolation method. The number of blood units actually discarded based on post‐donation information was also taken into account. Results: Three months after the outbreak, 5322 donors were estimated to be positive for SARS‐CoV‐2 and were therefore potentially excluded from donation. A total of units of blood components were discarded following post donation information. The estimated number of donors deceased (180) and the number of clinically recovered individuals in the same period was also considered. Conclusion: This forecasting model can be used to obtain information on blood donors' involvement during future SARS‐CoV‐2 outbreaks, especially in case of changes concerning epidemiology, incidence by age bracket and geographical distribution and also for new outbreaks of emerging viruses. The article describes the results achieved in 5 years of monitoring of a large wastewater treatment plant (700,000 PE) in Southern Italy, which has a conventional activated sludge process scheme and electricity as exclusive energy source. The monitoring involved a preliminary phase ("static" monitoring) for the analysis of historical data on the main process-related variables, using the approach of normalization techniques. In the second monitoring phase ("dynamic" monitoring) the theoretical distribution of the energy load among the electromechanical units of the plant was first studied; then, an energy monitoring system was implemented on the most energy-consuming unit of the plant, a 500 kW turbo-blower, with the aim of analysing in detail its real-time performance and investigating potential correlations with other process parameters (wastewater flow rates and associated pollutant load). Results of the static monitoring suggest good overall performances, both from an energy and environmental point of view, even if the plant works close to the maximum hydraulic capacity due to the massive infiltrations. In particular, focusing on the energy performances, the plant consumes on average 0.17 kWh/m3, 28 kWh/PE/year and 0.66 kWh/kgCODremoved. The results of dynamic monitoring, on the other hand, indicate that the turbo-blower consumes 30% less energy than what initially estimated through the theoretical model, but its functioning does not seem to be influenced by the other process parameters; this latter result reveals an inadequate energy management of the most power-absorbing electromechanical units of the plant and the consequent need to adopt effective strategies for energy optimization. It is composed of an ion source to generate a h or d plasma and of a multiple-Aperture multiple-grid (MAMuG) accelerator [1] , where ions extracted are accelerated in five consecutive stages of 200 kV each. • The engineering and fabrication of the beam source for MITICA BS started in october 2018, when a contract between fusion for energy (F4E) and alsymex (France) was signed. Presently, all the components and sub-assemblies have been manufactured, except for a few non-critical items. Assembly of the accelerator is well advanced and ion source is on-going. • A review of the fabrication of the main components and aspects of their assembly is reported in this paper, with a focus on the main achievements. BACKGROUND Botryotinia fuckeliana ( Botrytis cinerea) is a pathogen with a high risk of development of resistance to fungicides. Fungicide resistance was monitored during 2008-2011 in B. fuckeliana populations from both table-grape vineyards and greenhouse-grown strawberries in southern Italy. RESULTS Isolates showing different levels of resistance to anilinopyrimidines ( APs) were detected at high frequency (up to 98%) in fields treated intensively with APs (4-7 sprays season−1). A slight decrease in sensitivity to fludioxonil, always combined with AP resistance, was generally found at lower frequencies. The repeated use of fenhexamid on grapevine (3-8 sprays season−1) led to a strong selection of highly resistant isolates (up to 100%). Boscalid-resistant mutants were detected at very variable frequencies (0-73%). Occurrence of resistance to quinone outside inhibitors ( QoIs) was also ascertained. Multiple fungicide resistance to 2-6 different modes of action were frequently recovered. Single nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs) in the target genes Erg27, SdhB and cytb were associated with resistance to fenehexamid, boscalid and QoIs respectively. CONCLUSION Resistance to the fungicides commonly used against grey mould on table grape and strawberry is quite common in southern Italy. Sociological literature has been trying to discover the social meaning of this behaviour in order to solve, or at least to intervene in this form of social, and youth disease. Nowadays, in Italy phenomenon ultras is a big issue because of a long series of violent episodes connected with. Italian supporters Ultras behave aggressively not only against other supporters, but especially against policemen as an institutional symbol. As a consequence of the implementation of Italian Law N° 189/2002, known as the "Bossi-Fini" Act, and of its administrative regulations issued in April 2005, many aspects of the previous system governing immigration were changed. The first of these is the committee now responsible for determining the status of a refugee. In the past, there was only one such committee in Rome, while there are now seven of them. Another important factor of change is the "preventive detention" of asylum seekers in special centres for the identification of migrants. The principal aim of the article is to observe and describe the transformations taking place, as seen through the eyes of several different opinion leaders and policy makers (exponents of public administration, International Organizations, NGOs, Christian associations), as well as through interviews with asylum seekers and discussion of their living conditions in the camps. Sociological observations were conducted in three camps: two in Puglia (Foggia and Ban) and one in Calabria (Crotone). The results of the investigations are interpreted in theoretical structures that inform global change. As S. Castles has pointed out, "the study of forced migration is linked to research of economic migration, but needs to be analysed by its own specific research topics, methodological problems and conceptual issues". The article focuses on the seminar "Conoscere per valutare. At the seminar, ARIF, an online agency offering information service to refugees, was launched. Franco Frattini, the Vice-President of the European Commission, proposed measures for improving the condition of asylum seekers in Italy and in Europe.

This work presents a regridding procedure applied to the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) tropospheric column data, derived from the Copernicus Sentinel 5 Precursor Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (S5P/TROPOMI). The regridding has been performed to provide a better comparison with punctual surface observations. It will be demonstrated that TROPOMI NO2 tropospheric column data show improved consistency with in situ surface measurements once the satellite retrievals are scaled to 1 km spatial sampling. A geostatistical technique, i.e., the ordinary kriging, has been applied to improve the spatial distribution of Level 2 TROPOMI NO2 data, which is originally sparse and uneven because of gaps introduced by clouds, to a final spatial, regular, sampling of 1 km × 1 km. The analysis has been performed for two study areas, one in the North and the other in the South of Italy, and for May 2018-April 2020, which also covers the period January 2020-April 2020 of COVID-19 diffusion over the Po Valley. The higher spatial sampling NO2 dataset indicated as Level 3 data, allowed us to explore spatial and seasonal data variability, obtaining better information on NO2 sources. In this respect, it will be shown that NO2 concentrations in March 2020 have likely decreased as a consequence of the lockdown because of COVID-19, although the far warmest winter season ever recorded over Europe in 2020 has favored a general NO2 decrease in comparison to the 2019 winter. Moreover, the comparison between NO2 concentrations related to weekdays and weekend days allowed us to show the strong correlation of NO2 emissions with traffic and industrial activities. To assess the quality and capability of TROPOMI NO2 observations, we have studied their relationship and correlation with in situ NO2 concentrations measured at air quality monitoring stations. We have found that the correlation increases when we pass from Level 2 to Level 3 data, showing the importance of regridding the satellite data. In particular, correlation coefficients of Level 3 data, which range between 0.50–0.90 have been found with higher correlation applying to urban, polluted locations and/or cities. Thermal infrared remote sensing measurements have greatly improved in terms of spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution. These improvements are producing a clearer picture of the land surface and Earth atmospheric composition than ever before. Nevertheless, the analysis of this big quantity of data presents important challenges due to incomplete temporal and spatial recorded information. The aim of the present paper is to discuss a methodology to retrieve missing values of some interesting geophysical variables on a spatial field retrieved from spatially scattered infrared satellite observations in order to yield level 3, regularly gridded, data. The technique is based on a 2-Dimensional (2D) Optimal Interpolation (OI) scheme and is derived from the broad class of Kalman filter or Bayesian estimation theory. The goodness of the approach has been tested on 15-min temporal resolution Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) emissivity and surface temperature (ST) products over South Italy (land and sea), on Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) atmospheric ammonia ( N H 3 ) concentration over North Italy and carbon monoxide ( C O ), sulfur dioxide ( S O 2 ) and N H 3 concentrations over China. All these gases affect air quality. Moreover, sea surface temperature (SST) retrievals have been compared with gridded data from MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) observations. For gases concentration we have considered data from 3 different emission inventories, that is, Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research v3.4.2 (EDGARv3.4.2), the Regional Emission inventory in ASiav3.1 (REASv3.1) and MarcoPolov0.1, plus an independent study. The results show the efficacy of the proposed strategy to better capture the daily cycle for surface parameters and to detect hotspots of severe emissions from gas sources affecting air quality such as C O and N H 3 and, therefore, to yield valuable information on the variability of gas concentration to complete ground stations measurements. Black point is a fungal disease of wheat, mainly associated with mycotoxigenic Alternaria species. Affected wheat kernels are characterized by dark brown discolouration of the embryo region and reduction of grain quality. Potential risk is the possible accumulation of Alternaria mycotoxins, alternariol (AOH), alternariol-monomethyl ether (AME), tenuazonic acid (TA), and altenuene (ALT), provided by haemato-toxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic activities. One hundred and twenty durum wheat samples belonging to 30 different genotypes grown in Bologna and Modena areas, in Italy, showing black point symptoms, were analyzed for Alternaria species and their mycotoxin contamination. Alternariol was selected as an indicator of the capability of the Alternaria species to produce mycotoxin in vivo in field conditions. The data showed that Alternaria species occurred in 118 out of 120 wheat kernels samples, with the incidence of infected kernels ranging between 1% and 26%. Moreover, AOH was detected by using a HPLC with a diode array detector (LC-DAD) in 98 out of 120 samples with values ranging between 24 and 262 µg Kg−1. Ninety-two Alternaria representative strains, previously identified morphologically, were identified at species/section level using gene sequencing, and therefore were analyzed for their mycotoxin profiles. Eighty-four strains, phylogenetically grouped in the Alternaria section, produced AOH, AME, and TA with values up to 8064, 14,341, and 3683 µg g−1, respectively, analyzed by using a LC-DAD. The wastewater sector accounts for 25% of the global energy demand in the water sector. Since this consumption is expected to increase in the forthcoming years, energy optimization strategies are needed. A truly effective planning of energy improvement measures requires a detailed knowledge of a system, which can only be achieved through energy audit and real-time monitoring. In order to improve the identification of critical issues related to the use of energy resources within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the paper shows the results of a monitoring campaign performed on a large WWTP in southern Italy. Data obtained for the audit cover a 4-year timeframe (2014-2017). Energy-environmental performance has been evaluated through the benchmarking of: system variables, specific consumptions, and operational indicators. Moreover, by using a real-time data measurement and acquisition system it has been possible to evaluate the real performance of the most energy-intensive apparatus of the plant (a turbo-blower), over a period of 8 months. The main results indicate that (a) the plant is mainly affected by a massive capture of infiltrations, working in conditions close to the maximum hydraulic capacity, (b) real-time energy measurements are necessary to accurately characterize plant consumptions and adequately assess their critical aspects.

The study characterized the virological patterns and the resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) in patients with failure to IFN-free regimens enrolled in the real-life setting. All 87 consecutive HCV patients with failed IFN-free regimens, observed at the laboratory of the University of Campania, were enrolled. All patients had been treated with DAA regimens according to the HCV genotype, international guidelines, and local availability. Sanger sequencing of NS3, NS5A, and NS5B regions was performed at failure by home-made protocols. Of the 87 patients enrolled, 13 (14.9%) showed a misclassified HCV genotype, probably causing DAA failure, 16 had been treated with a sub-optimal DAA regimen, 19 with a simeprevir-based regimen and 39 with an optimal DAA regimen. A major RAS was identified more frequently in the simeprevir regimen group (68.4%) and in the optimal regimen group (74.4%) than in the sub-optimal regimen group (56.3%). The prevalence of RASs in NS3 was similar in the three groups (30.8-57.9%), that in NS5A higher in the optimal regimen group (71.8%) than in the sub-optimal regimen group (12.5%, P < 0.0001) and in the simeprevir regimen group (31.6%, P < 0.0005), and that in NS5B low in all groups (0-25%). RASs in two or more HCV regions were more frequently identified in the optimal regimen group (46.6%) than in the simeprevir-based regimen group (31.6%) and sub-optimal regimen group (18.7%). To explore changes in molecular epidemiology of acute viral hepatitis B (AVH-B), hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes were determined by direct sequencing of the Pre-S-S region in 123 consecutive patients, with AVH-B observed in Naples or its surroundings in the last decade (group AVH-B) and in 123 HBV chronic carriers [chronic carrier of HBV (CC-B) group] from the same areas, who had been hepatitis B surface antigen-positive for more than 10 years. Genotype D was less frequently detected in patients with AVH-B than in those in the CC-B group (76.4%vs 97.5%, P < 0.0001). In the AVH-B group, intravenous drug addiction (IVDA) was the prevalent risk factor (55.3%) for acquiring HBV in the 94 patients with HBV genotype D, but it was rarely recorded (6.9%) in the 29 patients with genotypes non-D (P < 0.0001); unsafe sexual intercourse was prevalent in patients with genotype non-D (72.3%) and less frequent in those with genotype D (28.8%, P < 0.005). In the AVH-B group, the prevalence of non-D genotypes increased during the observation period from 11.1% in 1999-2003 to 41.1% in 2004-2008 (P < 0.0005), paralleling the increase in the prevalence of patients with unsafe sexual intercourse; similarly, the progressive decrease in IVDA paralleled the decrease in the prevalence of genotype D (from 88.3% in 1999-2003 to 11.7% in 2004-2008). The prevalence of HBV non-D genotypes recorded in the last 10 years in AVH-B in this area shows a progressive increase, most probably because of recent changes in HBV epidemiology, namely, the HBV mass vaccination campaign and increased immigration from areas with high HBV endemicity.
