In this paper, the evaluation of the Rn-222 radioactivity content in drinking water samples from the Calabria region, southern Italy, is reported as a case study. The Rn-222-specific activity in the analyzed groundwater samples for human use was evaluated by using the PerkinElmer Tricarb 4910 TR setup and compared with the parameter value (100 Bq L−1) reported in the reference Italian legislation, i.e., D.Lgs. 28/2016, derived from the European Directive 2013/51/Euratom. The radiological health risk for the population of the investigated area, due to the ingestion and inhalation of Rn-222 dissolved in water, was then evaluated by calculating the total annual effective dose, only in those cases where the parameter value was exceeded. The obtained results represent a main reference for the investigated area and are useful for determining any possible radiological health risk for human beings related to the ingestion of the investigated radionuclide. Radon is the main source of exposure to ionizing radiation for the general population. In Italy, very little has been investigated to determine occupational radon exposure in workers. In this study, radon concentrations of various workplaces type were measured for 1 year using SSNTD CR-39. Q–Q plot and Shapiro–Wilks statistical test showed that radon concentrations are not log-normally distributed. The geometric mean of radon concentration was found to be 97 Bq/m3 with a geometric standard deviation of 3. The mean effective dose to workers has been calculated and found to be 1.4 mSv/y. Finally, for estimation of cancer risks, the lifetime risk and lung cancer cases per year per million have been calculated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pelargonic acid is a non-selective post-emergence contact bio-herbicide which is registered both for cropping and non-cropping uses in several countries. Dose–response curves on the efficacy of pelargonic acid against common weeds in Mediterranean areas are not available. Dose–response curves of pelargonic acid efficacy against summer and winter annual weeds were evaluated in two field experiments (winter exp. in 2019 and summer exp. in 2020) in central Italy. Pelargonic acid was applied at five doses (1.4, 2.7, 5.4, 10.9 and 21.8 kg a.i. ha−1). Data on weed density, weed dry weight, and weed ground cover were used to calculate the efficacy of pelargonic acid against winter and summer weeds. Data were subjected to a non-linear regression analysis using the logistic dose–response model. Dose of pelargonic acid required to obtain 50%, 70%, 90% and 95% weed control against each weed species (ED50, ED70, ED90 and ED95) were estimated. ED values allowed us to classify winter and summer weeds with respect to their susceptibility to pelargonic acid (ED50 values in kg ha−1 are reported in parenthesis): Kickxia spuria (2.6) (more susceptible) > Heliotropium europaeum (3.0) > Echinochloa crus-galli (3.4) > Solanum nigrum (3.6) > Stachys annua (5.3) > Papaver rhoeas (6.5) > Veronica hederifolia (10.3) > Amaranthus retroflexus (11.4) > Matricaria chamomilla (11.6) > Portulaca oleracea (18.7) > Lolium multiflorum (>21.8) (less susceptible). These findings will allow for the optimization of weed control by pelargonic acid and its use in weed management strategies, both in organic and sustainable cropping systems, under different environmental conditions. Objectives: To estimate the number of patients who receive a cumulative effective dose (CED) of ≥ 100 mSv from computed tomography (CT) in a single day or episode of care.Methods: We examined 28,870 patients who underwent 49,834 CT examinations in a tertiary care centre in Italy in 2.5 years. Radiation exposures were retrieved from the hospital's automatic exposure monitoring system. Two cohorts were identified as those who received a CED of ≥ 100 mSv in a single day and within a month starting from the first examination. Organ doses were estimated for the first cohort.Results: Among the 1765 (6.1%) patients who received CED ≥ 100 mSv in the observation period, 427 received a CED of ≥ 100 mSv within a month (and 70 patients in a single day). This group represented 1.5% of all patients who underwent CT exams and 24% of those who received CED ≥ 100 mSv in the observation period. The clinical indication for referral included cancer in 132 patients (31%) and non-oncological indications in 295 patients (69%). In 68/70 patients with CED > 100 mSv in a single day, at least one organ/tissue received a dose of ≥ 100 mGy.Conclusions: The finding of a sizeable percentage of patients undergoing CT exams and receiving CED ≥ 100 mSv in a single episode of care points toward the need of imaging appropriateness criteria, to revise the routine protocols, to replace older machines, and to provide to the radiologist the patient's prior radiation history to facilitate an appropriate decision-making process.Key Points: • Patients can receive effective doses greater than 100 mSv in a single CT or in multiple CT examinations performed in a single episode of care in 1.5% of patients in a 2.5-year period. • In this study, the clinical indication for CT referral was non-oncological in 69% of patients. • The patient's prior radiation history should be provided to the referring physicians and the radiological medical practitioner to facilitate an appropriate decision-making process. Flour investigation, in terms of physical and chemical pollutants and mineral content, is of great interest, in view of its high consumption for nutritional purposes. In this study, eleven types of flour (five samples for each one), coming from large retailers and employed by people for different cooking food purposes, were investigated through high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometry, in order to estimate natural (40K) and anthropogenic (137Cs) radioisotope specific activity and thus, to assess the radiological risk due to the flour ingestion. Inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively-coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) were also employed to evaluate any possible heavy metal contamination and the mineral composition, and to perform multivariate statistical analysis to deduce the flour authenticity. The evaluation of dose levels due to flour ingestion was performed, for the age category higher than 17 years, taking into account the average yearly consumption in Italy and assuming this need to be satisfied from a single type of flour as a precaution. All obtained results are under the allowable level set by Italian legislation (1 mSv y−1), thus excluding the risk of ionizing radiation effects on humans. As far as heavy metal contamination is concerned, Cd and Pb concentrations turned out to be lower than the threshold values, thus excluding their presence as pollutants. Wine is an alcoholic drink, largely used to accompany food, with a key role in the protective effects on cardiovascular diseases. This study was developed to investigate radioisotopes and heavy metal content of twenty red, rose and white Italian wines, belonging to controlled origin denomination (DOC) geographic areas of the Calabria region, south of Italy. High Purity Germanium (HPGe) Gamma Spectrometry was employed to evaluate anthropogenic (137Cs) and natural (40K) radionuclides specific activity. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to assess any possible heavy metals contamination by a comparison between Cu, Zn, Pb, B, As and Cd concentrations with the limits set by the Italian Legislation. Calculated annual effective doses due to the ingestion of investigated samples are under allowable levels (1 mSv/year), thus excluding the risk of ionizing radiation effects on humans. Abstract: A survey of gamma exposure in dwellings of Campania region, southern Italy has been performed using Thermo Luminescent Dosimeters (TLD). In each dwelling TLDs were exposed for six months in the room where the inhabitant spent most of their time, generally the bedroom or living room. The arithmetic mean was found to be 264 ± 111 nGy/h, after the subtraction of the cosmic contribution. The effects of building materials and geographic location were also examined. Using UNSCEAR model, the annual effective dose due to indoor gamma radiation was evaluated and it was found to be 1.3 mSv/y, that is higher than Italian national average of 0.4 mSv/y. Abstract: Radioactivity in underground waters from Mt. Etna was investigated on the basis of 13 samples. The samples were collected from springs, wells and galleries around the volcano. Water from nine out of thirteen intakes is used for consumption. Activity concentration of uranium isotopes 234,238U, radium isotopes 226,228Ra and radon 222Rn were determined with the use different nuclear spectrometry techniques. The measurements of radium and radon activity concentration were performed with the use of a liquid scintillation counter. The determination of uranium isotopes was carried out with the use of alpha spectrometry. All samples show uranium concentration above Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA), with the highest total uranium (234U+ 238U) activity concentration equal to 130mBq/l. For radium isotopes, all samples except one showed the activity concentration below MDA. Radon activity concentration was within the range from 1 to 13Bq/l, hence these waters can be classified as low-radon waters. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The aim of this study was the production of the first Italian survey of radiation dose in computed tomography (CT) prior to the widespread adoption of multislice CT, in order to have a reference point to facilitate later investigation of dose exposure changes brought by this new CT modality. The collected dose data were compared with diagnostic reference levels (DRLs). The agreement between experimental dose evaluation and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations was investigated. The survey was carried out in 29 Italian hospitals, covered 48 CT scanners and 232 examinations. The dose-length product (DLP) and effective dose (E) values were estimated based on MC simulations for seven clinical protocols using the CT-Dose program. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p<0.01) in the DLP between the two methods, with MC values being greater than the experimental ones. For E, the MC values were greater in routine head (8.2%), cervical spine (2.7%) and lumbar spine (2.9%) studies. The weighted CT dose index, the DLP and E were always below the DRLs set by the European Community. This dose survey gives a good but incomplete picture of the Italian CT dose situation and may be useful as a reference baseline for defining clinical multislice protocols in the near future. Radon is a major source of ionizing radiation exposure for the general population. It is known that exposure to radon is a risk factor for the onset of lung cancer. In this study, the results of a radon survey conducted in all districts of a Public Healthcare in Italy, are reported. Measurements of indoor radon were performed using nuclear track detectors, CR-39. The entire survey was conducted according to a well-established quality assurance program. The annual effective dose and excess lifetime cancer risk were also calculated. Results show that the radon concentrations varied from 7 ± 1 Bq/m3 and 5148 ± 772 Bq/m3, with a geometric mean of 67 Bq/m3 and geometric standard deviation of 2.5. The annual effective dose to workers was found to be 1.6 mSv/y and comparable with the worldwide average. In Italy, following the transposition of the European Directive 59/2013, great attention was paid to the radon risk in workplaces. The interest of the workers of the monitored sites was very high and this, certainly contributed to the high return rate of the detectors after exposure and therefore, to the presence of few missing data. Although it was not possible to study the factors affecting radon concentrations, certainly the main advantage of this study is that it was the first in which an entire public health company was monitored in regards to all the premises on the underground and ground floor. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas present in the hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere abundantly. Its ionizing radiation provides the largest human internal exposure by inhalation and ingestion to natural sources, constituting a serious health hazard. The contribution to total exposure is mainly due to inhalation, as ingestion by food or drinking water is typically very small. However, because of public health concerns, the contributions from all these sources are limited by regulations and remedial action should be taken in the event that the defined threshold values are overcome. In this paper, the first campaign of measurements to control the radon activity concentration in drinking water from public water supplies in the province of Salerno, south Italy, is described. The results represent a main reference for the area, as it was never investigated before. The purpose of this survey was to contribute to data compilation concerning the presence of radon-222 in groundwater in the Campania region and to determine the associated risk for different age groups. The maximum radon activity concentrations and the related total annual public effective dose turned out to be lower than the threshold values (100 Bq/l and 0.1 mSv/y, respectively) indicated by international guidelines and the national regulation, showing that the health risks for public consumption can be considered negligible.
