Originally dedicated to coherent Raman scattering, the first European CARS Workshop (ECW) was held at Harwell, United Kingdom in 1982. Although this brief hint at the numerous contributions Roberta made in the field of laser spectroscopy is clearly incomplete, it gives nonetheless an idea of the wide view that Roberta has about the potential of laser spectroscopy for the improvement of our life conditions. Roberta's vision and courage in this time as the ECW/ECONOS steering committee chair have helped to see the difficult times through greatly expanding the legacy of the ECW and shepherding it to the new era of ECONOS. As aforesaid, the members of the ECONOS/ECW community and the international steering committee would like to dedicate this special issue to Roberta Fantoni for her outstanding contributions and commitment to the field and this conference series.
