A baseline survey was conducted to know the status of haemato-biochemical and mineral parameters in crossbred cattle from 3 different agro-climatic zones of Jammu division. Blood samples (301) from cattle of various age groups were collected and analyzed. The average values of Hb, PCV, glucose, TPP, albumin, PUN, Ca, Pi, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Cu and Zn were 8.60 g/dl, 28.82%, 63.97 mg/dl, 6.78 g/dl, 3.16 g/dl, 9.45 mg/dl. 8.64 mg/dl, 4.88 mg/dl, 2.35 mg/dl, 145.63 mEq/I and 4.48 mEq/I, 65.40 pmol/1, 10.89 pmol/1 and 31.25 pmol/1, respectively. Based on Hb and PCV level, anaemia was recorded in 28.12 and 18.75% animals, respectively. Overall the plasma analysis revealed deficiency of Ca, Pi, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Zn, Fe among 41.49, 34.27, 3.50, 25.84, 22.09, 48.72, 4.83 and 4.40% cattle population, respectively. Thus, study concludes that area specific mineral mixtures need to be framed and supplemented for enhancing the productive and reproductive potential of crossbred cattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The slopes of western Lesser Himalaya (at Sangaldhan Block of Udhampur near Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir India) are being severely affected by tectonic and erosional activities. These activities result in deposit of a thick cover of rock fragments and overburden just above the hard rock. The thickness of overburden cover has directly affected the stability of slope in the study area, though the traditional stability estimation techniques, rock mass rating and slope mass rating, rate this area as moderately stable which does not represent the real stability condition. In this research work, the geotechnical and geophysical surveys have been carried out to reckon the slope stability conditions more accurately as compared to traditional slope stability estimation techniques. A new rating, new slope mass rating, is developed, which gives a better picture of the stability of slopes. It incorporates a new parameter of overburden thickness profile, along with slope angle and other associated factors on the slopes of the mountainous terrains. The vertical electrical sounding surveys were conducted for the demarcation of rock-overburden interface and for determining the overburden cover. This new classification depicts an increase of 12.84 % in unstable slope areas giving a better assessment and factual picture of slope stability in our study area. This study also enumerates the importance of geophysical applications in slope stability studies. The research work is applicable in mountainous terrains such as Himalaya, and the major component of the application is the orientation of overburden or the profile of thickness in relation with slope of surface. In this paper, we report observations of unusual whistlers recorded at Jammu (geomag. lat. = 22°26′N; L = 1.17), India on March 8, 1999 during the daytime. They are interpreted as one-hop ducted whistlers having propagated along higher L-values in closely spaced narrow ducts from the opposite hemispheres. After leakage from the duct, the waves might have propagated in the earthionosphere waveguide towards the equator in surface mode. Length-weight relationships (LWRs) are described for 10 fish species belonging to three families from the Jhelum and Poonch River, tributaries of the Indus river basin in India. LWRs for these species were unknown to FishBase and new maximum lengths are recorded for three species. The article reports on the results of a study regarding the prevalence of HIV infection among patients of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) attending chest diseases hospital in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It states that seroprevalence of HIV among PTB patients was 1.6% which is in contrast to the findings of other studies conducted in the country.
