Background: Trunk rotation during pitching correlates with pitching velocity and load on the joints of the upper limb. Trunk rotation is often focusing on during teaching the pitching motion. Athletes who exhibit early trunk rotation during pitching often have low thoracic spine rotational range of motion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the range of thoracic spine rotation measured using the lumbar locked rotation test (LLR-t), hip-shoulder separation (H/S) and thoracic rotation angle at stride foot contact (SFC), and ball velocity. Study design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: Fifteen healthy male high school students belonging to a baseball club were recruited for participation. The throwing side and non-throwing side LLR-t was performed using an inclinometer. Hip-shoulder separation and thoracic rotation angle during SFC were measured using a pitching motion analysis application: Pitch AI. In addition, a tracking device specifically designed for pitching：Pitching2.0 was employed to measure ball velocity. Correlations between LLR angle, H/S, trunk rotation angles at SFC, and ball velocity were examined using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Result: There was a positive correlation（r=0.52，p=0.047） between the LLRt angle and H/S. Additionally, there was a negative correlation（r=-0.62, p =0.01） between the LLRt angle on the throwing side and thoracic rotation angle. There was a positive correlation(r=0.54, p=0.04) between ball velocity and H/S and a negative correlation(r=-0.56, p=0.03) between ball velocity and thoracic rotation angle during SFC. Conclusion: The LLR-t measures thoracic rotation angle with the pelvis-lumbar spine fixed. The purpose of this study was to clarify the temporal coordination between gaze, head, and arm movements during forehand rallies in table tennis. Collegiate male table tennis players (n = 7) conducted forehand rallies at a constant tempo (100, 120, and 150 bpm) using a metronome. In each tempo condition, participants performed 30 strokes (a total of 90 strokes). Gaze, head, and dominant arm (shoulder, elbow, and wrist) movements were recorded with an eye‐tracking device equipped with a Gyro sensor and a 3‐D motion capture system. The results showed that the effect of head movements relative to gaze movements was significantly higher than that of eye movements in the three tempo conditions. Our results indicate that head movements are closely associated with gaze movements during rallies. Furthermore, cross‐correlation coefficients (CCs) between head and arm movements were more than 0.96 (maximum coefficient: 0.99). In addition, head and arm movements were synchronized during rallies. Finally, CCs between gaze and arm movements were more than 0.74 (maximum coefficient: 0.99), indicating that gaze movements are temporally coordinated with arm movements. Taken together, head movements could play important roles not only in gaze tracking but also in the temporal coordination with arm movements during table tennis forehand rallies. Movement repetition is known to play a key role in promoting functional improvements or maintaining functional levels in post-stroke hemiparetic patients. However, repetitive movements tend to be monotonous, making it challenging for patients to continue. Here, we developed a new gamified system to allow patients perform repetitive movements with enjoyment. The present study aimed to examine the usability of the system in subacute stroke patients. The exercise system comprised an electromyography-controlled operating system that enabled users to play a virtual game by repetitive finger and wrist movements on the affected side. A total of 13 patients with upper-limb hemiparesis underwent a single bout of exercise using the system and assessed its usability, satisfactoriness, enjoyability, etc. using the System Usability Scale (SUS), Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with assistive Technology (QUEST)-like questionnaire, and numerical rating scale (NRS). All the participants, who had a wide range of paretic levels, were able to perform the exercise using the system. Participants scored the system a median of 85.0 for SUS and 4.2 for the QUEST-like questionnaire, with an "excellent" in usability and "satisfied" in user satisfaction with the system. The median NRS scores for enjoyability, potential for continuous use, and effectiveness were 8.0, 9.0, and 9.0, respectively, which were greater than the scores for usual rehabilitation training for the upper extremity. The novel electromyography-controlled gamified exercise system may have sufficient usability and enjoyability to motivate patients with a wide range of paretic levels to perform repetitive finger and wrist movements. The electromyography-controlled gamified exercise system had overall positive perspectives on the usability of the system. J Strength Cond Res 36(5): e82–e87, 2022—This study aimed at elucidating the characteristics of upper-limb physical strength required by female wrestlers by comparing the pull power, power endurance, and number of repetitions between female wrestlers at world and national levels. The subjects were 20 female wrestlers (8 Olympic- and/or world-class and 12 national-class top-ranking individuals). The subjects assumed a lying prone (face down) position on a bench and pulled a bar from arms length until contact with underside of bench. The weight load was increased in 10-kg steps and the upper-limb pull power was measured for each lift. To measure power endurance, the power to achieve the repetition maximum and the maximum number of repetitions were measured at the load at which they exerted their maximum power. All measurements were obtained using a GymAware power meter (Kinetic Performance Technology, Canberra, Australia). Pull power was greater at 20, 30, 40, and 50 kg in world-class wrestlers than in national-class wrestlers. No difference was observed in the time course of power endurance between the groups; however, the power in world-class wrestlers declined slower than in national-class wrestlers. Repetition maximum also tended to be higher in world-class wrestlers than in national-class wrestlers. Female wrestlers were observed to have greater upper-limb pull power in a range from low to high loads and were able to preserve repetition ability while maintaining high power. Background: Robot-assisted rehabilitation is an appealing strategy for patients after stroke, as it generates repetitive movements in a consistent, precise, and automated manner. Objective: To identify patients who will benefit most from robotic rehabilitation for upper extremity (UE) hemiparesis. Methods:We used data from our previous randomized clinical trial comparing 6 weeks of robotic therapy (ReoGeo system) plus standard therapy (n=30) with self-guided therapy plus standard therapy (n=26) for sub-acute phase rehabilitation in adults with mild to moderate UE hemiparesis. The outcome measures were three Fugl-Meyer (FMA) motor scores: total UE score, proximal UE score, and UE flexor synergy score. Based on pre-therapy UE flexor synergy scores, participants were categorized into mild (10–12 points), moderate (6–9 points), and severe (0–5 points) impairment classes. Results: In the robotic group, all outcome measures improved after therapy in patients with moderate or severe impairment. In the self-guided therapy, most outcomes did not improve, regardless of the impairment class. When changes from pre- to post-therapy were compared between robotic and self-guided groups, most outcomes were similar in all impairment classes. However, robotic therapy was associated with greater improvement in UE flexor synergy than self-guided therapy in patients with moderate impairment (2.3±1.3 vs. -0.1±2.8, P=0.027). Conclusions: Post-strokerobot-assisted rehabilitation, as an adjunct to standard rehabilitation therapy, improved UE function in patients with moderate or severe pre-therapy UE flexor synergy impairment. Adjunct robotic therapy produced greater improvement in UE flexor synergy motor function than adjunct self-guided rehabilitation in patients with moderate pre-therapy impairment. Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a quantitative evaluation method of interference patterns on needle electromyography that is easy to apply in clinical use and to examine its usefulness. Diagnostic electrophysiological assessments are important for physiatrists, and correct diagnosis and assessment are essential for proper rehabilitation. Design: A total of 112 maximum interference patterns of upper extremity muscles suspected of being affected by neuropathy were quantitatively evaluated based on the parameters of integration values, mean amplitudes, the number of peaks, and activity. "Activity" was defined as the sum of the time during which myoelectric signals were recorded during 1 sec with maximum voluntary contraction, and it was expressed as a percentage. The relationships of the previous parameters with spontaneous pathological potentials and polyphasic motor unit potentials were examined. Results: The area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic curve for the diagnosis of neuropathy was the highest using activity (0.917). The integral value and mean amplitude were useful for the diagnosis of cases with chronic neuropathy showing slightly decreased interference patterns. Background. We have observed changes in body reactions during cooking, which is one of the treatment modalities used in occupational therapy. The perception of food-related odors during cooking may have behavioral effects on human activities through the activation of appetitive motivation. Objectives. We investigated whether odor components contained in seasonings could facilitate the human motor system and the specificity of this effect. Methods. The subjects were 72 healthy adults, randomly assigned to a water exposure group, a phenylethyl alcohol (PEA, pleasant rose-like odor) exposure group, and a Japanese soy sauce (Koikuchi Shoyu) exposure group (n=24 each). The subjects' olfactory sense was stimulated by their sniffing of three different test tubes containing 5 ml of water, PEA, or Japanese soy sauce for 20 sec while they were seated. The modified Functional Reach Test (mFRT), which mimics a functional activity that is required in daily living and assesses a reliable measure of sitting balance, was performed prior to and immediately after the sniffing. Results. Sniffing the soy sauce increased the subjects' mFRT scores. This facilitation effect was odorant-specific and was absent when the subjects were presented with water or PEA. Conclusions. Cooking interventions are aimed at improving tool-handling skills such as using knives and chopsticks. Statement of context: A new grip part for the long cane used by visually impaired children was developed and the effect of this grip, using the muscle activity of the upper limbs, investigated. Critical reflection on practice: When using a long cane with this newly designed grip, the upper limb manipulating the cane showed less muscle activity than when using the conventional grip part. Implications for practice: Since long canes with the new grips require less muscle activity in their operation, they are popular, making it possible to encourage their use from the lower grade of elementary school. Background Infants aged 2 to 5 months show spontaneous general movements (GMs) of the whole body, which are referred to as fidgety movements (FMs). Although previous studies have shown that evaluation of GMs by the General Movement Assessment (GMA) has predictive value about later neurological impairments, it remains unknown whether raters consistently perceive and rate such complex kinematic information. Objective The purpose of this study was to construct a method to reveal which movement features are associated with each rater's evaluation of FMs based on the GMA. Design GMA scores of 163 healthy infants aged 11 to 16 weeks postterm were matched with data obtained from a 3-dimensional motion analysis system. Methods Three physical therapists performed the GMA and classified GMs into 9 types, from which we focused on 3 subtypes differing in the temporal organization of FMs (continual, intermittent, and sporadic FMs). We also calculated 6 movement indices (average velocity of limb movements, number of movement units, kurtosis of acceleration, jerk index, average curvature, and correlation between limb velocities) for arms and legs for each infant and analyzed which movement indices were associated with the ratings of the 3 FM subtypes by each rater. Results Only the average curvature differed significantly among the ratings of the 3 FM subtypes for all 3 raters. Each rater showed significant differences in the average curvature in either arms or legs. Limitations It is difficult to generalize the present results to raters with various levels of expertise and experience in using the GMA. This issue calls for further research. Background: Against the background of linguistic and cultural differences, there is a need for translation and adaptation from the English version of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) to Japanese. In addition, there is no study of inter-rater reliability of FMA all domains for affected upper extremities with appropriate sample size based on the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) focusing on non-simultaneous assessment. Objective: This study aimed (1) to translate the English version of the FMA and its administration/scoring manual; and (2) to investigate the psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the FMA in patients with stroke. Methods: A prospective single-center study involving 30 patients was conducted. The FMA and the Action Research Arm Test, the Box-and-Block Test, and the Motor Activity Log were employed. The inter-rater/intra-rater reliability, the internal consistency, the validity, and the floor/ceiling effects were assessed. Results: Regarding the non-simultaneous and simultaneous inter-rater reliability, ICC ranged from 0.809-0.983 (P<0.001) and 0.991-0.999 (P<0.001), respectively. Regarding the simultaneous intra-rater reliability, ICC ranged from 0.994-0.999 (P<0.001). The Cronbach's alpha was 0.973 in the non-simultaneous evaluation and 0.981 in the simultaneous evaluation. Regarding the validity, Spearman's rhos were higher than 0.92 for the FMA all domains and motor domain. The patients who showed the highest score and the lowest score of the FMA (all domains and motor domain) were 10% and 0%, respectively. Conclusions: The Japanese version of the FMA motor domain and all domains can reliably assess the affected upper extremities in patients with mild-to-severe hemiparesis after stroke for both non-simultaneous and simultaneous assessment. Abstract: Background: During routine health screening, some infants cannot maintain the prone position with extended arm support at 6 months. Little is known, however, about the development of full‐term infants with this developmental deviation. We investigated the developmental course of infants with this characteristic. Methods: We enrolled 2,020 full‐term infants who had been recruited at a regional center for the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Their development was measured using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, third edition, at 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3 years. The children were grouped according to their ability to stay prone on extended arms at 6 months, and their development was compared. Results: A total of 1,625 infants could stay prone on extended arms and 179 could not. We excluded 212 infants who could stay prone on extended arms only sometimes, and four who did not have a questionnaire response. In the gross motor domain, significant difference in questionnaire scores was observed between the “could” and “could‐not” groups at 6 months (Hedges’ g, 1.83) and persisted until 3 years (Hedges’ g, 0.33). Significant differences were also observed in the communication, fine motor, problem solving, and personal–social domains at 6 months (Hedges’ g, 0.20–0.58) and persisted until 1, 2, 2, and 1.5 years, respectively (Hedges’ g, 0.21–0.25). Conclusions: Infants who cannot maintain the prone position on extended arms lag behind those who can, although the effect sizes become relatively small after 1.5 years of age. Objective: To examine the independent and combined associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscular fitness (MF) with cardiometabolic risk factors in Japanese adolescents. Methods: A cross‐sectional study including 993 Japanese adolescents (aged 13‐14 years) was undertaken. Height, body mass, blood pressure, lipid profile (non‐fasting), and HbA1c were measured. The physical fitness (PF) test included measurements of CRF (20 m multistage shuttle run test), upper limb strength (hand grip strength), lower limb strength (standing long jump), and muscular endurance (sit‐ups). The clustered cardiometabolic risk (CCMR) was estimated by summing standardized Z‐scores of body mass index (BMI), mean arterial pressure (MAP), non‐high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (non‐HDL‐C), and HbA1c. Results: Linear regression analysis showed that all PF factors except for muscular endurance were inversely correlated with CCMR (P < .001). Among metabolic risk components, HbA1c was unrelated to PF, while non‐HDL‐C was inversely associated with CRF (B = −2.40; P < .001), upper limb strength (B = −1.77; P < .05), and lower limb strength (B = −1.53; P < .05) after adjustment for lifestyle factors. Logistic regression showed that the probability of having high CCMR (≥1SD) was synergistically higher in those with the lowest tertiles of both CRF and upper limb strength (P for interaction = .001); however, a substantially lower likelihood of having high CCMR was observed among individuals with the lowest tertile of upper limb strength but moderate CRF. Many coaches often instruct swimmers to keep the elbow in a high position (high elbow position) during early phase of the underwater stroke motion (pull phase) in front crawl, however, the high elbow position has never been quantitatively evaluated. The aims of this study were (1) to quantitatively evaluate the “high elbow” position, (2) to clarify the relationship between the high elbow position and required upper limb configuration and (3) to examine the efficacy of high elbow position on the resultant swimming velocity. Sixteen highly skilled and 6 novice male swimmers performed 25 m front crawl with maximal effort and their 3-dimensional arm stroke motion was captured at 60 Hz. An attempt was made to develop a new index to evaluate the high elbow position (Ihe: high elbow index) using 3-dimensional coordinates of the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. Iheof skilled swimmers moderately correlated with the average shoulder internal rotation angle (r = −0.652,P < 0.01) and swimming velocity (r = −0.683,P < 0.01) during the pull phase. This study examined the validity of segmental bioelectrical impedance (BI) analysis for predicting the fat-free masses (FFMs) of whole-body and body segments in children including overweight individuals. The FFM and impedance ( Z) values of arms, trunk, legs, and whole body were determined using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and segmental BI analyses, respectively, in 149 boys and girls aged 6 to 12 years, who were divided into model-development ( n = 74), cross-validation ( n = 35), and overweight ( n = 40) groups. Simple regression analysis was applied to (length)2/ Z (BI index) for each of the whole-body and 3 segments to develop the prediction equations of the measured FFM of the related body part. In the model-development group, the BI index of each of the 3 segments and whole body was significantly correlated to the measured FFM ( R2 = 0.867-0.932, standard error of estimation = 0.18-1.44 kg (5.9%-8.7%)). There was no significant difference between the measured and predicted FFM values without systematic error. The application of each equation derived in the model-development group to the cross-validation and overweight groups did not produce significant differences between the measured and predicted FFM values and systematic errors, with an exception that the arm FFM in the overweight group was overestimated. Segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis is useful for predicting the FFM of each of whole-body and body segments in children including overweight individuals, although the application for estimating arm FFM in overweight individuals requires a certain modification. Objective: To assess differences in improvement of hiesho (sensitivity to cold) through a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of one group that used a self-care program (the Home Care Package Program for Relieving Hiesho) and another that did not. Methods: Participants were pregnant women experiencing hiesho in the 28th to 33rd weeks of pregnancy. The group carried out the intervention program for 4 weeks by wearing leg warmers, performing exercises, and pressing acupuncture points. The control group did not take any specific actions. Hiesho condition was assessed by using thermography to measure temperature in the four limbs; the changes were analyzed. Results: Findings for 140 pregnant women (73 in the experimental group and 67 in the control group) were analyzed. Participants' body temperatures were measured after completion of the program for 4 weeks and compared to their temperatures before start of the program. Compared with the control group, the experimental group had arm skin temperature 3.0°C ( p < 0.001) higher and leg skin temperature 1.93°C ( p = 0.02) higher; both differences were significant. Objective:This study aimed to examine whether, on the basis of the relationship between sensors attached on the upper limbs and energy expenditure (EE) at the time of wheelchair propulsion, there are differences in the measurement of EE depending on the sensor attachment site and whether addition of the angular velocity information to the acceleration value is advantageous. We also aimed to clarify the variables used to estimate EE as well as the estimated error.Setting:Laboratory of the National Hospital Organization Murayama Medical Center, Japan.Methods:Six male subjects with spinal cord injuries participated in the study. Each wore sensors at the wrist and the middle upper arm on both sides while driving a wheelchair on a treadmill at three levels: very, very light; very light; and fairly light. Triaxial acceleration, triaxial angular velocity and EE were measured during driving. We analyzed the correlation between EE and acceleration, angular velocity and synthesized values of acceleration and angular velocity at each location using regression, multiple regression and Bland-Altman analyses.Results:The determination coefficients between EE and the acceleration, angular velocity and synthesized values of acceleration and angular velocity varied from 0.68 to 0.87 at each location. The mean difference between the measured and estimated EE varied from 0.0028 (s.d., 0.0027) kcal min−1 kg−1 on the right upper arm.Conclusion:These findings suggest that combining the synthesized values of angular velocity and acceleration of the motion sensors on the upper limbs might reflect EE during a wheelchair driving activity on a treadmill. The article reports on research which was conducted to investigate the relationship between muscle size indices of the pectoralis major muscle and bench press and bench throw performance in male collegiate athletes. Researchers evaluated 18 athletes. They found that while the dependence on pectoralis major muscle size is slightly different between bench press strength and bench throw power, muscle size has an impact on the performance of both exercises.

The article discusses a study which examined the muscle power differences between some right-handed university baseball players and suggests that baseball plays train with even loads on both arms while compensating for differences in strength. The article discusses research investigating the effects of training volume on upper limb muscular strength and hypertrophy. The team recruited eight sedentary, untrained young Japanese men. The men trained their elbow flexor muscles twice per week for 12 consecutive weeks using a crossover-like design in which their arms randomly assigned to training with one or three sets of weights. The impact of a three-set protocol for sedentary untrained individuals is discussed.

The article discusses research which was conducted to investigate the relationship between upper-body strength based on weight tests and bat swing speed in high-school baseball players. Researchers evaluated 30 players. They found that bat swing speed was associated with bench power and isokinetic chest presses in the players and concluded that to improve the hitting power of players the players should develop their bench power with light loads.

The purpose of this study was to determine the significance of mechanical energy generation and transfer in the upper limb in generating the racket speed during table tennis topspin forehands. Nine advanced and eight intermediate table tennis players performed the forehand stroke at maximum effort against light and heavy backspin balls. Five high-speed video cameras operating at 200 fps were used to record the motions of the upper body of the players. The joint forces and torques of the racket arm were determined with inverse dynamics, and the amount of mechanical energy generated and transferred in the arm was determined. The shoulder internal rotation torque exerted by advanced players was significantly larger than that exerted by the intermediate players. Owing to a larger shoulder internal rotation torque, the advanced players transferred mechanical energy from the trunk of the body to the upper arm at a higher rate than the intermediate players could. Regression of the racket speed at ball impact on the energy transfer to the upper arm suggests that increase in the energy transfer may be an important factor for enabling intermediate players to generate a higher racket speed at impact in topspin forehands. Objectives: Understanding the differences in baseball pitching biomechanics between American and Japanese pitchers may help with training and developing these athletes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinematic and kinetic differences in collegiate baseball pitchers from United States of American and Japan., Design: Controlled laboratory study., Methods: Data were analyzed for 11 American and 11 Japanese collegiate pitchers throwing fastballs using 3D motion capture (480Hz)., Results: The Americans were heavier (95±7kg vs 81±7kg), taller (189±3cm vs 180±6cm), and had faster ball velocity (39±1m/s vs 35±2m/s). By the end of arm cocking phase, the American pitchers had rotated their shoulder to a greater degree (p=0.021, d=1.5) and at ball release the Japanese had greater knee flexion (p=0.020, d=1.2). American pitchers exhibited greater peak kinetics on the throwing arm; however, when normalized for height and weight only three differences remained., Conclusion: The differences found between the American and Japanese players could contribute to the increased ball velocity in the American pitchers. Additionally, throwing arm peak kinetics were greater in the American pitchers which may help generate greater ball velocity; however, increased kinetics may also lead to increased risk of injury., (Copyright © 2020 Sports Medicine Australia. Background: It remains unclear how past exercise habits can affect the skeletal muscle mass in adulthood in Japanese populations. Aim: The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the association of appendicular muscle mass (AMM) and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) with the history of exercise and/or physical activity participation in Japanese women. Subjects and methods: One hundred and twenty females, aged between 18 and 28 years old, participated in the present investigation. Using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanner, the appendicular lean soft tissue, which is considered as a measure of AMM, was evaluated. Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was also assessed. Furthermore, all subjects answered a physical activity questionnaire. Results: Exercise habits at 7 years of age or older positively affected the AMM and SMI. The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that exercise history at 16-18 years of age as well as the current status of exercise and/or physical activity participation was a significant predictor of SMI and AMM. Conclusions: These results indicate that not only the past history of participation in physical and/or sports activities but also the current status of daily physical activity and sports activity play an important role in maintaining appropriate SMI and AMM in young women.

Aim We compared skeletal muscle mass and physical function between older adults with sarcopenia and those with sarcopenic obesity. Methods Body composition and physical and cognitive function were measured for 1283 community-dwelling older adults. Participants responded to questionnaires about pain and exercise. The pure sarcopenia group (PS) included individuals with sarcopenia only. The sarcopenic obesity group (SO) included individuals with both sarcopenia and obesity. Groups were compared after adjusting for sex, age and height through propensity score matching. Results The PS and SO included 129 and 105 individuals, respectively. Comorbidities were more frequent in the SO ( P < 0.001). The SO had higher upper limb muscle mass ( P < 0.001), and had lower ratios of lower limb muscle mass to upper limb muscle mass ( P < 0.001) and of lower limb muscle mass to weight ( P < 0.001). The SO also had poorer grip power ( P = 0.007), gait times (usual pace, P = 0.001; maximum speed, P = 0.001), Timed Up and Go test ( P < 0.001), and time standing on one foot ( P = 0.005) than the PS. The SO had a higher frequency of gonalgia ( P = 0.013). After adjusting for covariates, comorbidities, upper limb muscle mass, lower limb muscle mass to upper limb muscle mass ratio, lower limb muscle mass to weight ratio, gait time, Timed Up and Go test, time standing on one foot, and gonalgia differed significantly between the PS and SO. Conclusions Sarcopenic obesity decreases the ratio of lower limb muscle mass to weight by increasing weight. It affects physical function in older Japanese adults with low weight. The aim of this study was to compare protein secretion on intact skin of extremities and verify the relationship between the marker proteins on abdominal skin and systemic factors using skin blotting. A cross-sectional study was conducted among elderly patients aged 65 years and older (N = 73) at a long-term medical facility in Japan. Skin blotting was performed on the right and left forearms, right and left lower legs, and abdomen. Pearson's correlations and Bland-Altman plots were utilised for comparing the protein secretion from the skin between the right or left forearms or lower legs. Multiple regression analysis was applied to determine the relationship between intensity levels of 3 proteins on the abdominal skin and the systemic factors. Bland-Altman plots demonstrated that there was no significant difference between right and left secretion levels on the forearms and lower legs among 3 proteins. Multiple regression analysis showed that age and antiplatelet use was positively associated with decreased collagen type IV and increased matrix metalloproteinase 2 levels, respectively. During the weaning period, infants are not skilled at self-feeding and caregivers play a prominent role in feeding. Therefore, solid feeding is an inherently collaborative and interactive process between caregivers and infants. The present study examined how caregivers and infants coordinate to construct solid feeding interactions, as an analysis of naturalistic longitudinal observations of three Japanese mother-infant dyads. The main results were as follows. After 2 or 3 months post-weaning, mothers' arm movements became non-fluid while feeding children. This non-fluidity was associated with rapid changes in the movement patterns of the mother's arms and the child's mouth. Compared to the development of children's mouth movements, mothers' arm movements developed quickly. This imbalance in the pace of change may have been one cause of non-fluency. While feeding, even though mothers did not eat the children's food, they frequently moved their mouths as if they were eating. The frequency of this maternal behavior differed according to their feeding styles, and mothers' movement patterns corresponded well with their babies' mouth movements. In a review of 46 meta-analyses of gender differences, overhand throwing had the largest gender difference favoring boys (ES > 3.0). Expectations for gender-specific performances may be less pronounced in female Australian Aborigines, because historical accounts state they threw for defense and hunting. Overhand throwing velocities and kinematics were recorded in 30 female and male Aboriginal Australian children 6-10 years old. Results indicated the Aboriginal girls and boys were more similar in horizontal ball velocities than U.S. girls and boys. Throwing kinematics between girls and boys were also more similar in Australian Aborigines than U.S. children. Aboriginal girls threw with greater velocities than U.S., German, Japanese, and Thai girls, while the boys were similar across cultures.

Objective: We evaluated the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) test and the short-form MNA as screening tools for malnutrition in the Japanese elderly population., Methods: A cross-sectional study of 226 elderly Japanese patients (78.6 +/- 0.5 y of age, mean +/- standard deviation; 67 men and 159 women) in various settings was carried out. Nutritional assessment included MNA, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical markers., Results: According to the original cutoff point of the full MNA, 19.9% of those assessed were malnourished, 58.0% were at risk of malnutrition, and 22.1% were well nourished. Significant correlations were found between full MNA scores and age (r = -0.14), body mass index (r = 0.59), serum albumin (r = 0.60), total cholesterol (r = 0.36), midarm circumference (r = 0.50), and triceps skinfold (r = 0.37). The sensitivity and specificity of the full MNA score (< 17) for hypoalbuminemia were 0.810 and 0.860, respectively. With a cutoff point lower than 18, sensitivity and specificity hypoalbuminemia were 0.857 and 0.815, respectively. Using a short-form MNA score 12 and higher as normal, its sensitivity and specificity for predicting undernutrition were 0.859 and 0.840, respectively., Conclusions: The full and short forms of the MNA were useful tools to identify elderly Japanese patients with malnutrition or risk of malnutrition. However, the full MNA cutoff point for malnutrition should be modulated for this population.

We examined changes in the usage of muscular and motion-dependent moments during the long-term practice of a complex, multijoint movement. Seven participants practiced a cyclic movement of the upper limbs until their joint angular movements conformed to those of an expert. The motions of the participants were digitally recorded using four high-speed infrared cameras, and the joint kinematics and kinetics of the right arm were calculated. Practice brought about changes in the patterns of the net joint moment and in the contributions of the muscular and motion-dependent moments to the net moments. Practice also brought about a growing opposition between the directions of the two moments. These changes seemed to be important for improving the dynamic equilibrium of the movements.

The aim of this study was to evaluate heart rate variation and urinary catecholamines in response to acute psychological stress in hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) patients and healthy controls. LF% (indicator of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous activity), HF% (indicator of the parasympathetic nervous activity) and their ratio LF/HF (indicator of sympathovagal balance) were calculated from short-term electrocardiographic data from 16 HAVS patients and 14 healthy controls before and immediately after exposure to acute psychological stress. Urinary catecholamines (norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine) were analyzed from urine samples collected from every subject during rest and after exposure. The LF% and LF/HF of the patients significantly increased after exposure. The after exposure LF/HF of the patients was significantly greater than that of the controls. The amount of norepinephrine in the patients significantly increased after exposure. The after exposure amount of norepinephrine and epinephrine in the patients were significantly greater than the respective amount of the controls. The results of the present study indicated the predominance of sympathetic tone in the cardiac sympathovagal balance and greater sensitivity of the sympathoadrenal medullary system in response to acute psychological stress in the patients than in the healthy controls.

Physiological characteristics of japanese female classical ballet dancers were investigated in comparison with sedentary women of similar age (non-dancers). Subjects were 20 professional female ballet dancers with a mean age of 26.5 +/- 4.4 years (mean +/- SD) and 66 sedentary women with a mean age of 23.7 +/- 3.6 years. Dancers had been trained in ballet classes for 20.4 +/- 2.4 years and had no experience of regular exercises except dance training. Body mass and % body fat measured by under-water weighing method were significantly smaller in the dancers than in the non-dancers. For all extremities, percentage of the muscle in total cross-sectional area calculated by ultra sound apparatus was significantly larger and percentage of the adipose tissue in total cross-sectional area was significantly smaller in the dancers. The maximal isometric and isokinetic force of knee flexors and the maximal isometric force of dorsi flexors (MVC force) were significantly larger in the dancers when the values were divided by body mass of each subject. During 50 repetitions of maximal plantar flexion, the isometric force of the dancers was significantly larger in all repetitions except first and second reps, though no significant difference was observed in MVC force during plantar flexion. It was suggested that the significant differences between the dancers and the non-dancers in some physiological variables might be attributed to the characteristics of dance movements/training.

For early diagnosis of vibration syndrome, it is necessary to detect the insidious functional disorders which appear without organic changes in it's early stage. In Japan, peripheral circulation and sensory tests, including tests after cold water immersion, and functional capacity motor tests are performed widely on the upper extremities. We have examined workers exposed to three kinds of vibration, and control workers, using these function tests, and analyzed the data with the use of principal component analysis. As a result, these function tests were considered to be of diagnostic significance as a screening test for vibration syndrome. It is also suspected that peripheral circulation disturbance, sensory disturbance and motor disturbance found in vibration syndrome advance independently of each other. Disparities in the findings of vibration syndrome were recognized and were attributed to differences of work conditions.
