Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging viral disease in East Asian countries, including China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea (ROK). The causative agent of SFTS is the SFTS virus (SFTSV), which is transmitted by ticks. To investigate the prevalence of SFTSV in the ROK, a total of 9744 ticks were collected from vegetation in five national parks between July and November 2015. Of the collected adult and nymph ticks, Haemaphysalis longicornis (68.44%) was the most abundant, followed by Haemaphysalis flava (29.66%), Ixodes nipponensis (1.56%), and Amblyomma testudinarium (0.34%). Collected larval ticks were of the genera Haemaphysalis (99.61%) and Ixodes (0.39%). One-step RT-PCR and nested PCR were used to detect SFTSV-specific genes from each individual adult and nymph tick and pooled larval ticks. SFTSV was detected in 4.77% (48/1006) in H. longicornis, 1.15% (5/436) in H. flava, 0% (0/23) in I. nipponensis, and 20% (1/5) in A. testudinarium. The infection rate of SFTSV in adult and nymph ticks was 3.61%. The prevalence of SFTSV in adult and nymph ticks was relatively high, compared with previous reports. In larval ticks, the minimum infection rate was 0.31%. SFTSV was detected in ticks collected from both trail and nontrail areas in the national parks, and up to 800 meters above sea level. Background & objectives: Chittoor virus (CHITV) belongs to genus Orthobunyavirus, family Bunyaviridae. It has been isolated from various species of mosquitoes and pig from different parts of India. Five isolates of CHITV were characterized at the molecular level and compared with other Batai viruses (BATV) to find out any kind of reassortment in their genome. Methods: Complete nucelocapsid (S), glycoprotein (M) and partial RNA polymerase (L) segments of CHITV were amplified and sequenced. These sequences were compared with those of Batai viruses, isolated from different geographical locations in Asia, Africa and Europe. Results: Phylogenetic analysis revealed CHITV as a variant of BATV. High level of conservation was seen among the CHITV isolates studied. The CHITV sequences showed clustering in one lineage with the sequences from Japan and Malaysia, however, BATV sequences from Europe and Africa formed a separate phylogenetic lineage. Interpretation & conclusions: The study indicates the presence of a single genotype of CHITV circulating in India, despite the involvement of different hosts in the natural cycle by this virus. Analysis of the sequences of the S, M and L segments of genome indicated that the virus has not undergone any reassortment. This virus has not caused any epidemic involving humans, however, replication of the virus in different mosquito and vertebrate hosts species suggests that it is a cause of concern. Soft ticks, Argas vespertilionis, were collected from feces of bats in Japan. Cytopathic effect (CPE) was observed after inoculating the homogenates of ticks to Vero cells. Sequencing of RNA extracted from the cell supernatant was performed by next generation sequencer. The contigs had identity to segments of Bunyaviruses, Issyk-Kul virus. The identities of segment L, M and S were only 77, 76 and 79% to Issyk-Kul virus, respectively. Therefore, we named this novel virus Soft tick bunyavirus (STBV). In the phylogenetic tree, segment L of STBV was closely related to a cluster consisting of the genus Nairovirus of the family Bunyaviridae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Akabane virus is a member of the genus Orthobunyavirus in the family Bunyaviridae. It is transmitted by hematophagous arthropod vectors such as Culicoides biting midges and is widely distributed in temperate to tropical regions of the world. The virus is well known as a teratogenic pathogen which causes abortions, stillbirths, premature births and congenital abnormalities with arthrogryposishydranencephaly syndrome in cattle, sheep and goats. On the other hand, it is reported that the virus rarely induces encephalomyelitis in cattle by postnatal infection. A first large-scale epidemic of Akabane viral encephalomyelitis in cattle occurred in the southern part of Japan from summer to autumn in 2006. The aim of this study is to define the epidemiological, pathological and virological properties of the disease. Results: Nonsuppurative encephalomyelitis was observed in cattle that showed neurological symptoms such as astasia, ataxia, opisthotonus and hypersensitivity in beef and dairy farms by histopathological analysis. Akabane viral antigen and genome were consistently detected from the central nervous system of these animals, and the virus was isolated not only from them but also from the blood samples of clinically healthy calves in the epidemic area. The isolates were classified into genogroup I a containing the Iriki strain, which caused encephalitis of calves almost twenty years ago in Japan. Most of the affected cattle possessed the neutralizing antibody against Akabane virus. Seroconversion of the cohabitated and sentinel cattle in the epidemic area was also confirmed during an outbreak of the disease. Conclusion: The ecological and epidemiological data we have obtained so far demonstrated that the Akabane virus is not endemic in Japan. No evidence of Akabane virus circulation was observed in 2005 through nation-wide serological surveillance, suggesting that a new strain belonging to genogroup I a invaded southern Japan from overseas in the summer of 2006 and caused an unprecedented epizootic of encephalomyelitis mainly in susceptible calves.
