An Mw 6.2 earthquake occurred in Suzu, northeastern Noto Peninsula, Japan, on 5 May 2023, followed by many aftershocks. Before this mainshock‐aftershock sequence, an intense earthquake swarm lasted in the vicinity for 2.5 years. Here, we estimated the rupture process of the Mw 6.2 mainshock and relocated >20,000 surrounding small earthquakes. The results show that systematic upward migration occurred via a complex network of faults in the preceding swarm period and that the mainshock rupture was initiated near the shallow end of the swarm earthquakes. The mainshock rupture propagated farther updip, followed by many aftershocks in the shallow extension. Upward fluid movement likely caused systematic upward earthquake migration from a depth of 18–5 km. The present results indicate the importance of monitoring swarm events since large (M > 6) and dangerous earthquakes can occur during such swarms. Plain Language Summary: Growing evidence suggests that fluid movements at depth can cause earthquake swarms in the overriding plates of subduction zones. However, there is less evidence of fluid involvement in the occurrence of large (M > 6) earthquakes, and it has been reported that the generation environments of large earthquakes and swarm earthquakes tend to be different. During intense swarm activity in the northeastern Noto Peninsula, Japan, starting at the end of 2020, an M6.2 earthquake occurred on 5 May 2023, followed by many aftershocks. To clarify the occurrence mechanism of the M6.2 mainshock, we relocated >20,000 small earthquakes and estimated the rupture process. The results showed a systematic upward migration of earthquakes in the preceding swarm period on the deep side of the mainshock fault (depth from 20 to 12 km). The mainshock rupture initiated near the shallow end of the swarm activity and propagated updip (depth from 12 to 9 km). Many aftershocks followed in shallower part of the same fault (depth from 10 to 5 km). Upward fluid migration likely caused the observed systematic upward earthquake migration throughout the sequence. The results indicate that earthquakes as large as M > 6 can be triggered by fluid migration during enhanced seismicity in swarms. This study presents the shear wave velocity (VS) structures of sedimentary sequences and a section of the upper crustal layer in the Fukushima forearc region of the Japan Trench subduction zone, which were obtained by analysing the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratios of ambient vibration records. The H/V curves were derived using 31 d of continuous seismic data from 3 broad-band and 16 short-period ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) stations. Using the broad-band data, H/V ratios from 0.01 to 10 Hz were derived, but the ratios below 0.1 Hz frequencies were unusually large and temporally unstable. Characterization of seismic noise energy from ∼1 yr of seismic data of three broad-band OBSs revealed variable and elevated energy conditions below 0.1 Hz due to typical long-period oceanic noise; we link these observations with the unstable H/V ratios below this frequency. Therefore, H/V analysis was performed in the frequency range of 0.1–10 Hz for both broad-band and short-period OBSs to obtain subsurface VS profiles. For the forward calculation of the H/V ratios in the inversion process, we used the recently developed 'hvgeneralized' method, which is based on the diffuse field assumption, and accounts for the water layer on top of stratified media. Moreover, available prior geological and geophysical information was utilized during the inversion of the H/V curves. We found that subsurface VS ranged from approximately 30 m s−1 at the seabed to approximately 4900 m s−1 at 7000 m below the sea floor (mbsf). Starting with the best model candidate at each OBS location, the effect of the water layer on the H/V curve in the deep ocean was investigated by comparing synthetic H/V curves with and without the water layer. The synthetic H/V analysis revealed that the water layer had a significant effect on H/V amplitudes at higher frequencies (>1 Hz), whereas comparatively little effect was observed at lower frequencies (<1 Hz). This study provides an empirical basis for H/V analysis using OBS data to determine VS down to several kilometres of sedimentary sequences to the upper crust with high-resolution. Long-term continuous observation of seafloor pressure is effective for detecting seafloor vertical deformations that are associated with transient tectonic phenomena such as slow slip events. Since the aseismic slip event prior to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, several discoveries have been made on spontaneous slow slip events and various other types of slow earthquake along the Japan and Kuril Trenches. Seafloor observation network for earthquakes and tsunamis along the Japan Trench (S-net) is expected to provide invaluable information on slow slip activities via geodetic signals that are detected by pressure observation. This study inspects the quality of the S-net pressure data in view of seafloor geodesy by comparison with records obtained by more than 100 autonomous ocean bottom pressure recorders (OBPRs) deployed along the Japan Trench. OBPRs have long been standard tools in seafloor geodesy, and the data collected are considered a benchmark in terms of quality. Most of the S-net stations showed noise levels that are considerably higher than those of the OBPRs over periods of more than 2 d. We speculate that a strong correlation between pressure and temperature accounts for much of the long-term noise. In this study, the temperature-dependent fluctuation component was estimated by prediction filtering and removed from the original data, leading to a significant reduction in the noise level at 51 stations, which reached levels almost equivalent to those of OBPRs. Although no significant pressure changes have been identified as associated with the 2018 Boso SSE or repeated tremor bursts in the northern Japan Trench thus far, our findings indicate that these stations are sufficiently sensitive to detect slow slip events occurring nearby. We performed oceanic and atmospheric observations in the region off the Sanriku coast, Japan, from May 11 to 5 July 2022, using a wave-propelled unmanned surface vehicle, a Wave Glider (WG). Despite the severe weather conditions of atmospheric low-pressure system crossings, we successfully measured wind, air temperature, humidity, and sea surface temperature over the course of 55 days to calculate the turbulent heat flux. The WG observed that the atmosphere became more humid due to the southerly wind along the northwestern rim of the North Pacific subtropical high. The warm Kuroshio water expanded to the southeast of Hokkaido as a result of the northward shedding of an anticyclonic mesoscale ( ~ 100 km) eddy, called a warm-core ring, from the Kuroshio Extension. The WG traversed smaller (sub-mesoscale) water regions that were warmer and saltier than the surrounding Kuroshio water. The observations indicate that cold, dry air masses advected by northerly winds following the passage of atmospheric low-pressure systems generate a substantial upward turbulent heat flux over sub-mesoscale warm water regions, contrasting to no heat flux in the surrounding Kuroshio water region. This study proposes a new method for the uncertainty estimation of coseismic slip distribution on the plate interface deduced from real-time global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data and explores its application for tsunami inundation prediction. Jointly developed by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and Tohoku University, REGARD (REal-time GEONET Analysis system for Rapid Deformation monitoring) estimates coseismic fault models (a single rectangular fault model and slip distribution model) in real time to support tsunami prediction. The estimated results are adopted as part of the Disaster Information System, which is used by the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan to assess tsunami inundation and damage. However, the REGARD system currently struggles to estimate the quantitative uncertainty of the estimated result, although the obtained result should contain both observation and modeling errors caused by the model settings. Understanding such quantitative uncertainties based on the input data is essential for utilizing this resource for disaster response. We developed an algorithm that estimates the coseismic slip distribution and its uncertainties using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. We focused on the Nankai Trough of southwest Japan, where megathrust earthquakes have repeatedly occurred, and used simulation data to assume a Hoei-type earthquake. We divided the 2951 rectangular subfaults on the plate interface and designed a multistage sampling flow with stepwise perturbation groups. As a result, we successfully estimated the slip distribution and its uncertainty at the 95% confidence interval of the posterior probability density function. Furthermore, we developed a new visualization procedure that shows the risk of tsunami inundation and the probability on a map. Under the algorithm, we regarded the Markov chain Monte Carlo samples as individual fault models and clustered them using the k-means approach to obtain different tsunami source scenarios. We then calculated the parallel tsunami inundations and integrated the results on the map. This map, which expresses the uncertainties of tsunami inundation caused by uncertainties in the coseismic fault estimation, offers quantitative and real time insights into possible worst-case scenarios. On December 7, 2012, an earthquake occurred within the Pacific Plate near the Japan Trench, which was composed of deep reverse- and shallow normal-faulting subevents (Mw 7.2 and 7.1, respectively) with a time interval of ~10 s. It had been known that the stress state within the plate was characterized by shallow tensile and deep horizontal compressional stresses due to the bending of the plate (bending stress). This study estimates the fault model of the doublet earthquake utilizing tsunami, teleseismic, and aftershock data and discusses the stress state within the incoming plate and spatiotemporal changes seen in it after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. We obtained the vertical extents of the fault planes of deep and shallow subevents as ~45–70 km and ~5 (the seafloor)–35 km, respectively. The down-dip edge of the shallow normal-faulting seismic zone (~30–35 km) deepened significantly compared to what it was in 2007 (~25 km). However, a quantitative comparison of the brittle strength and bending stress suggested that the change in stress after the Tohoku-Oki earthquake was too small to deepen the down-dip end of the seismicity by ~10 km. To explain the seismicity that occurred at a depth of ~30–35 km, the frictional coefficient in the normal-faulting depth range required would have had to be ~0.07 ≤ μ ≤ ~0.2, which is significantly smaller than the typical friction coefficient. This suggests the infiltration of pore fluid along the bending faults, down to ~30–35 km. It is considered that the plate had already yielded to a depth of ~35 km before 2011 and that the seismicity of the area was reactivated by the increase in stress from the Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Abstract: We describe two transient slow slip events that occurred before the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. The first transient crustal deformation, which occurred over a period of a week in November 2008, was recorded simultaneously using ocean-bottom pressure gauges and an on-shore volumetric strainmeter; this deformation has been interpreted as being an M6.8 episodic slow slip event. The second had a duration exceeding 1month and was observed in February 2011, just before the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake; the moment magnitude of this event reached 7.0. The two events preceded interplate earthquakes of magnitudes M6.1 (December 2008) and M7.3 (March 9, 2011), respectively; the latter is the largest foreshock of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Our findings indicate that these slow slip events induced increases in shear stress, which in turn triggered the interplate earthquakes. The slow slip event source area on the fault is also located within the downdip portion of the huge-coseismic-slip area of the 2011 earthquake. This demonstrates episodic slow slip and seismic behavior occurring on the same portions of the megathrust fault, suggesting that the faults undergo slip in slow slip events can also rupture seismically. Abstract: Recently, the occurrence of slow earthquakes such as low-frequency earthquakes and very low-frequency earthquakes have been recognized at depths of about 30 km in southwest Japan and Cascadia. These slow earthquakes occur sometimes in isolation and sometimes break into chain-reaction, producing tremor that migrates at a speed of about 5–15 km/day and suggesting a strong interaction among nearby small asperities. In this study, we formulate a 3-D subduction plate boundary model with two types of small asperities chained along the trench at the depth of 30 km. Our simulation succeeds in representing various types of slow earthquakes including low-frequency earthquakes and rapid slip velocity in the same asperity, and indicates that interaction between asperities may cause the very low-frequency earthquakes. Our simulation also shows chain reaction along trench with propagation speed that can be made consistent with observations by adjusting model parameters, which suggests that the interactions also explain the observed migration of slow earthquakes. In 1997, a seismic experiment using an airgun array and ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs) was performed in the forearc region of the northeastern Japan (NEJ) arc. The objectives of this experiment were to clarify seismic structures of the forearc region off Sanriku, Japan using airgun–OBS data and to understand the nature of the Japan trench seismogenic zone. Fundamental features of the structure are as follows:(i)The subduction angle becomes steeper from east to west, from 3 to 8 to 11°, with the top of the plate located at depths of 11 km (40 km west from the trench), 21 km (120 km west from the trench) and 28 km (140 km west from the trench), respectively.(ii)The NEJ Moho beneath the forearc is defined at a depth of approximately 20 km.(iii)P-wave velocity of the island arc upper mantle is approximately 8 km s−1.(iv)TheP-wave velocity of the Cretaceous sedimentary layer exhibits significant lateral variability (4.0–5.5 km s−1) in the E–W direction.(v)The upper crust of NEJ forearc also has the significant lateral heterogeneity (5.0–6.3 km s−1) in the E–W direction, but not in the N–S direction.(vi)The middle crust defined on land extends in some locations 40 km east of the coastline.(vii)Lateral variability in theP-wave velocity of the lower crust (6.7–7.0 km s−1) is small compared with that of the upper crust.According to these results, it is suggested that the rupture areas of large earthquakes (>M7) in this region are limited within the contact zone between the NEJ arc crust and the subducting oceanic crust. Although a thin layer with low velocity is probably present within this contact zone, the serpentinization of uppermost mantle wedge of the NEJ arc by reaction between the mantle materials and the water from the thin layer beneath forearc region is limited. The article presents the observations of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake at 19 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) sites located off Miyagi region. The researchers retrieved 17 OBS from March to November 2011 in emergency research cruises. The retrieved OBSs have recorded the seismic wave data, which were used for relocation of the hypocenters of the foreshock, mainshock, and aftershocks.

Shear-wave anisotropy in Earth's mantle helps constrain the lattice-preferred orientation of anisotropic minerals due to viscous flow. Previous studies at the Japan Trench subduction zone using land-based seismic networks identified strong anisotropy in the mantle wedge, reflecting viscous flow induced by the subducting slab. Here we map anisotropy in the previously uninvestigated offshore region by analyzing shear waves from interplate earthquakes that are recorded by a new seafloor network (the S-net). The newly detected anisotropy is not in the mantle wedge but only in the overlying crust (∼0.1 s time delay and trench-parallel fast direction). The distinct lack of anisotropy indicates that the forearc mantle wedge offshore is decoupled from the slab and does not participate in the viscous flow, in sharp contrast with the rest of the mantle wedge. A stagnant forearc mantle wedge provides a stable and cold tectonic environment that is important for the petrological evolution and earthquake processes of subduction zones. Knowledge of shear-wave anisotropy is important to understanding the structure and dynamics of the subduction zone mantle wedge. We applied tomographic inversion and receiver function analysis to seismic data from ocean-bottom seismometers and land-based stations to understand the structure and its relationship with slow slip events off Boso, Japan. First, we delineated the upper boundary of the Philippine Sea Plate based on both the velocity structure and the locations of the low-angle thrust-faulting earthquakes. The upper boundary of the Philippine Sea Plate is distorted upward by a few kilometers between 140.5 and 141.0°E. We also determined the eastern edge of the Philippine Sea Plate based on the delineated upper boundary and the results of the receiver function analysis. The eastern edge has a northwest–southeast trend between the triple junction and 141.6°E, which changes to a north–south trend north of 34.7°N. The change in the subduction direction at 1–3 Ma might have resulted in the inflection of the eastern edge of the subducted Philippine Sea Plate. Second, we compared the subduction zone structure and hypocenter locations and the area of the Boso slow slip events. Most of the low-angle thrust-faulting earthquakes identified in this study occurred outside the areas of recurrent Boso slow slip events, which indicates that the slow slip area and regular low-angle thrust earthquakes are spatially separated in the offshore area. In addition, the slow slip areas are located only at the contact zone between the crustal parts of the North American Plate and the subducting Philippine Sea Plate. The localization of the slow slip events in the crust–crust contact zone off Boso is examined for the first time in this study. Finally, we detected a relatively low-velocity region in the mantle of the Philippine Sea Plate. The low-velocity mantle can be interpreted as serpentinized peridotite, which is also found in the Philippine Sea Plate prior to subduction. An unprecedentedly extensive seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection survey using 65 ocean bottom seismographs revealed detailed crustal structure around the eastern Nankai Trough. A previously published crustal model shows an abrupt offset of the Moho at the south of the Zenisu Ridge, a prominent topographic high along the oceanward slope of the Nankai Trough. Our crustal model indicates that this offset of the Moho extends southwestward continuously to 138°E, decreasing its gap. The survey area experienced the last two great earthquakes in 1854 and 1944. However, the northeastern part of the survey area seems to have remained unruptured since the 1854 event. Factors controlling the size of the rupture area for great earthquakes are still a matter of debate. There are several candidates for these factors in the survey area: hypothetical tectonic boundaries that may or may not be oceanward prolongation of major on-land tectonic lines, estimated locations of slab disruption, and the extent of Moho offset along the strike of the Zenisu Ridge. The main purpose of this survey is to clarify the relation between the crustal structure and these geophysical and geological features bounding the rupture area. Our crustal model from the trough axis to the continental slope is characterized by a well-developed sedimentary wedge bounded by island arc crustal blocks, consisting of upper and lower crust, to the northwest. Furthermore, the subducting oceanic crust, which can be traced down to 25 km depth, shows that the down-dip angle steepens at 55 km landward from the trough axis. On the basis of compilation of our crustal model with previously published models around the eastern Nankai Trough, we derived an image of the entire subducting plate geometry for depths shallower than 20 km, which is still poorly constrained by the land observation of microearthquakes. Significant lateral variations of the crustal structure and the slab geometry are recognized along one prominent canyon, and the offset of the Moho at the south of the Zenisu Ridge disappears to the southwest of the canyon. Moreover, it seems that the slab disruption recognized at a depth greater than 20 km is connected to this canyon. Therefore, the lateral variation of the crustal structure along the canyon may be one of the causes to stop rupture propagation of great earthquakes. Furthermore, the crustal variation may also form a tectonic boundary that distinguishes the subduction pattern of the Philippine Sea plate, including the influence of the Izu–Ogasawara collision, in the eastern Nankai Trough from the simple subduction pattern of the western Nankai Trough. Abstract: We obtained ambient seismic noise interferograms as seismic reflection images using autocorrelation functions (ACFs) in the northeastern Japan subduction zone. The ACFs with a time window length of 120s were calculated from the continuous seismic records obtained at each seismic station over an analysis period of 300days. These ACFs show some distinct signals with relatively large amplitude without any significant temporal variations during the analysis period. The signals, which are stable, appear at both small lag times of less than 10s and large lag times of 20–50s during the analysis period. The lag time of 10s corresponds to the travel time of the PP reflection arrival from the continental Mohorovičić discontinuity. The signals with the large lag times between 30 and 50s correspond to the back-scattered signals from the mantle wedge or the plate boundary; these signals are identified clearly at the stations located on the back-arc side. In the ACFs calculated from the records obtained from the fore-arc side stations, weak signals (interpreted as the reflection from the plate boundary) with a lag time range of 20 to 30s are observed. We constructed depth-migrated images using the ACFs to obtain the reflectivity profile by assuming that the ACFs represent Green''s functions composed of a random wavefield excited by stochastic sources or scatterers distributed in the vertical or near-vertical direction from the stations. Further, we assumed that the ACFs can be treated as zero-offset seismic traces recorded at each of the stations. The depth-migrated images show a relatively seismically transparent structure within the subducting Pacific slab and a reflective structure within the mantle wedge; this reflective structure is characterized by low-velocity zones corresponding to the wedge flow imaged by 3-D seismic velocity tomography. Abstract: Large earthquakes have repeatedly occurred in the area off southeastern Hokkaido Island, Japan, as the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the island, which is on the North American Plate. The most recent large earthquake in this area, the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw=8.0), occurred on September 26, 2003. In order to investigate aftershock activity in the rupture area, 47 Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBSs) were quickly deployed after the main shock. In the present study, we simultaneously estimate the hypocenters and 3-D seismic velocity models from the P- and S-wave arrivals of the aftershocks recorded by OBSs. The subducting plate is clearly imaged as a northwest dipping zone in which Vp is greater than 7 km/s, and the relocated hypocenters also show the subducting Pacific Plate. The aftershock distribution reveals that the dip angle of the plate boundary increases abruptly around 90 km from the Kuril Trench. The bending of the subducting plate corresponds to the southeastern edge of the rupture area. The island arc crust on the overriding plate has P-wave velocities of 6–7 km/s and a Vp/Vs of 1.73. A region of Vp/Vs greater than 1.88 was found north of the epicenter of the main shock. The depth of the high Vp/Vs region extends about 10 km upward from the plate interface. The plate boundary just below the high Vp/Vs region has the largest slip at the main rupture. A high Vp anomaly (~7.5 km/s) is found in the island arc crust in northeast part of the study area, which we interpret as a structural boundary related to the arc–arc collisional tectonics of the Hokkaido region, as the rupture of the main shock terminated at this high Vp region. We suggest that the plate interface geometry and the trench-parallel velocity heterogeneity in the landward plate are principal factors in controlling the rupture area of the main shock. Abstract: The Tsushima Basin is located in the southwestern Japan Sea, which is a back-arc basin in the northwestern Pacific. Although some geophysical surveys had been conducted to investigate the formation process of the Tsushima Basin, it remains unclear. In 2000, to clarify the formation process of the Tsushima Basin, the seismic velocity structure survey with ocean bottom seismometers and airguns was carried out at the southeastern Tsushima Basin and its margin, which are presumed to be the transition zone of the crustal structure of the southwestern Japan Island Arc. The crustal thickness under the southeastern Tsushima Basin is about 17 km including a 5 km thick sedimentary layer, and 20 km including a 1.5 km thick sedimentary layer under its margin. The whole crustal thickness and thickness of the upper part of the crust increase towards the southwestern Japan Island Arc. On the other hand, thickness of the lower part of the crust seems more uniform than that of the upper part. The crust in the southeastern Tsushima Basin has about 6 km/s layer with the large velocity gradient. Shallow structures of the continental bank show that the accumulation of the sediments started from lower Miocene in the southeastern Tsushima Basin. The crustal structure in southeastern Tsushima Basin is not the oceanic crust, which is formed ocean floor spreading or affected by mantle plume, but the rifted/extended island arc crust because magnitudes of the whole crustal and the upper part of the crustal thickening are larger than that of the lower part of the crustal thickening towards the southwestern Japan Island Arc. In the margin of the southeastern Tsushima Basin, high velocity material does not exist in the lowermost crust. For that reason, the margin is inferred to be a non-volcanic rifted margin. The asymmetric structure in the both margins of the southeastern and Korean Peninsula of the Tsushima Basin indicates that the formation process of the Tsushima Basin may be simple shear style rather than pure shear style. • 3D traveltime mapping shows two strong reflection areas from the top of the PHS. • One is near the main slip area of the Boso SSEs and the other is about 60 km to the east. • The reflections from the former area are generated by a thin low-velocity layer. • The latter area contains a high-velocity structure (HVS) near the top of the PHS. • This HVS may represent boninite or partially serpentinized peridotite or gabbro. The region off the Boso Peninsula, Japan, is a tectonically complex area where the Pacific plate is subducting beneath both the landward plate and the Philippine Sea plate (PHS) from the Japan trench and the Izu-Bonin trench as the PHS is subducting under the landward plate from the Sagami trough. It is important to better determine the structure of this region to deepen our understanding of its seismicity. Previous seismic reflection studies have shown that reflections from the upper surface of the PHS vary with depth, being stronger in the main slip area of the slow slip events beneath the Boso Peninsula (Boso SSEs). However, the spatial relationship between the reflective area and the SSEs is poorly constrained. This study mapped the distribution of the reflective area using data recorded by ocean bottom seismometers during an active-source seismic experiment. We constructed a 3D P-wave velocity structure by using traveltimes of first arrivals from 18 ocean bottom seismometer records. We also adapted the traveltime mapping method to reflection traveltimes, projecting them to the depth–distance domain, to map the 2D distribution of strong reflections from the top of the PHS. These reflections were concentrated in two areas, one near the main slip area of the Boso SSEs and the other about 60 km to the east. In the first area, the absence of strong velocity contrasts near the top of the PHS suggests that the reflections were generated by a thin low-velocity layer. In contrast, the structure of the second area has a convex shape of high velocity with a high velocity gradient near the top of the PHS. This structure may represent boninitic material of the outer-arc high, partially serpentinized peridotite, or gabbro displaced by intraoceanic reverse faults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
