Background: Previous studies have reported the association of HK2 and NCK2 genes with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) in Japan, but there has been no follow-up study in other countries, so the relevance of these genes to NTG appears uncertain at present. Thus, we investigated the relationship between the HK2 and NCK2 genes and NTG in a Korean NTG cohort. Methods: In total, 154 unrelated Korean patients with NTG and 101 normal Korean controls were recruited. Thus, a total of 255 participants were analyzed for NCK2 (rs2033008) and HK2 (rs678350) gene polymorphisms. Results: The minor allele frequency (MAF) of rs678350 was significantly higher in NTG patients (MAF = 0.32) than in controls (MAF = 0.23) (OR, 1.586; 95% CI, 1.058 to 2.375; P = 0.028). This trend was more significant in the dominant model (OR, 1.908; 95% CI, 1.144 to 3.180; P = 0.015). When we performed logistic regression analysis to adjust for age, both the allelic and dominant models were still statistically significant. No significant difference was observed in rs2033008 allele or genotype frequencies between the NTG patients and control subjects. Objectives: This study examined the effects of job autonomy and job satisfaction on burnout among careworkers in Japan and South Korea. Careworker is defined as a direct care worker in long-term care settings such as nursing homes, senior day care centers, and independent living centers who professionally provides physical and housekeeping support services for older adults who are unable to perform activities of daily living independently due to mental decline such as dementia and stroke in Japan and South Korea. Methods: Data were collected from 1152 Japanese careworkers and 319 Korean careworkers at various locations in Japan and South Korea. The primary variables included sociodemographic information, job autonomy, job satisfaction, and burnout. Results: Descriptive analyses indicated group difference between Japanese and Korean careworkers in terms of age, gender, marital status, educational level, job autonomy, job satisfaction, and burnout. Hierarchical regression analysis found that job autonomy and job satisfaction were the significant determinants of burnout risks. Also, age and marital status were significantly associated with burnout for Japanese careworkers and educational level had a significant influence on burnout for Korean careworkers. Conclusion: This study noted similarities and differences in the two careworker groups. Findings suggest the need to develop policy and practice considerations to reduce burnout risks among careworkers to improve quality of care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The association between obesity and albuminuria in the general population remains unclear. We aimed to identify the association between obesity and albuminuria as well as sex differences regarding the associations using several obesity indices, including waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-height ratio (WHR). Methods: This study included 3841 subjects (1730 males and 2111 females; age 20-80 years) who participated in the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2011. Subjects with hypertension, diabetes, renal failure, or a malignant tumor and those who were pregnant or menstruating were excluded. Albuminuria was defined as a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio ≥30 mg/g. Anthropometric parameters were categorized into sex-specific quartiles. Logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between each anthropometric parameter and albuminuria. Results: All of the obesity indices of the fourth quartile group of females showed a twofold higher risk for albuminuria than the second quartile group, and it was persistently significant after adjusting for age, smoking, and physical activity. After further adjustment for high blood pressure and impaired fasting glucose and triglyceride levels, WC and BMI of the fourth quartile group of females still showed a significantly higher risk for albuminuria than the second quartile group (odds ratios 1.96 and 2.24; 95 % confidence intervals 1.03-3.74 and 1.15-4.37). None of the associations between albuminuria and the obesity indices were significant in males. Conclusion: Higher WC and BMI were significantly associated with the risk of albuminuria among females, but not males. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In response to increasing trends in sulfur deposition in Northeast Asia, three countries in the region (China, Japan, and Korea) agreed to devise abatement strategies. The concepts of critical loads and source-receptor (S-R) relationships provide guidance for formulating such strategies. Based on the Long-range Transboundary Air Pollutants in Northeast Asia (LTP) project, this study analyzes sulfur deposition data in order to optimize acidic loads over the three countries. The three groups involved in this study carried out a full year (2002) of sulfur deposition modeling over the geographic region spanning the three countries, using three air quality models: MM5-CMAQ, MM5-RAQM, and RAMS-CADM, employed by Chinese, Japanese, and Korean modeling groups, respectively. Each model employed its own meteorological numerical model and model parameters. Only the emission rates for SO and NO obtained from the LTP project were the common parameter used in the three models. Three models revealed some bias from dry to wet deposition, particularly the latter because of the bias in annual precipitation. This finding points to the need for further sensitivity tests of the wet removal rates in association with underlying cloud-precipitation physics and parameterizations. Despite this bias, the annual total (dry plus wet) sulfur deposition predicted by the models were surprisingly very similar. The ensemble average annual total deposition was 7,203.6 ± 370 kt S with a minimal mean fractional error (MFE) of 8.95 ± 5.24 % and a pattern correlation (PC) of 0.89-0.93 between the models. This exercise revealed that despite rather poor error scores in comparison with observations, these consistent total deposition values across the three models, based on LTP group's input data assumptions, suggest a plausible S-R relationship that can be applied to the next task of designing cost-effective emission abatement strategies. Researchers reviewed different cases of TTE from January 2006 to June 2013, including their clinical presentations, operative technique, and intraoperative findings. Moreover, they found that the etiology of TTE is unknown and diagnosis laparoscopy is discovered to be effectual in TTE diagnosis.
