Of all the levels of education, doctoral education is the most internationalised. By selecting one key indicator (the proportion of international students among a country's doctorate recipients), the article presents an analysis of PhD students' international mobility. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, many barriers to the international mobility of PhD students were removed, leading to an even larger flow of students. From 2000 to 2012, the international mobility of PhD students reached a new peak, with a significant increase in the percentage going to Japan, France, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia. Nowadays, China has become the largest source of international doctoral students. In that process, a number of excellent students go abroad to study for foreign doctoral degrees. On one hand, the loss of excellent students is harmful to China's PhD training system, but on the other hand, it is a great opportunity for China to change brain drain into brain gain by making full use of the knowledge diaspora scattered around the world.

Corrosion of steel reinforcement due to chloride penetration is a major deterioration mechanism of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to marine environments. In the present paper, a probabilistic model is presented to predict the chloride penetration profile in concrete and the risk of steel corrosion considering the time dependence of both the diffusion coefficient and the surface chloride concentration of concrete. Abundant field data from two projects in China and Japan are respectively collected. The consistency between these field data and the model prediction verified the reliability of this probabilistic model, based on which further parametric analyses were carried out to investigate the effects of different design variables on the probability of steel corrosion. • A complete phylogeny of Picea is robustly reconstructed at the genomic level. • Picea originated in North America and experienced multiple dispersals by the Bering Land Bridge. • Spruces in the Japanese Archipelago have multiple origins. • The Taiwan spruce has a close relationship with species from southwest China. A robust phylogeny is prerequisite to understand the evolution and biogeography of organisms. However, ancient and recent evolutionary radiations occurred in many plant lineages, which pose great challenges for phylogenetic analysis, especially for conifers characterized by large effective population sizes and long generation times. Picea is an important component of the dark coniferous forests in the Northern Hemisphere. Previous studies improved our understanding of its evolutionary history, but its interspecific relationships and biogeographic history remain largely unresolved. In the present study, we reconstructed a well-resolved phylogeny of Picea by comparative transcriptomic analysis based on a complete species sampling. The phylogenetic analysis, together with molecular dating and ancestral area reconstruction, further supports the North American origin hypothesis for Picea , and indicates that this genus experienced multiple out-of-North America dispersals by the Bering Land Bridge. We also found that spruces in the Japanese Archipelago have multiple origins, and P. morrisonicola from the Taiwan Island has a close relationship with species from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and adjacent regions. Cryptomeria japonica is a major forestry tree species in Japan. Male sterility of the species is caused by a recessive gene, which shows dysfunction of pollen development and results in no dispersed pollen. Because the pollen of C. japonica induces pollinosis, breeding of pollen-free C. japonica is desired. In this study, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers located at 1.78 and 0.58 cM to a male sterility locus (MSI) were identified from an analysis of RNA-Seq and RAD-Seq, respectively. SNPs closely linked to MSI were first scanned by a method similar to MutMap, where a type of index was calculated to measure the strength of the linkage between a marker sequence and MSI. Linkage analysis of selected SNP markers confirmed a higher efficiency of the current method to construct a partial map around MSI. Allele-specific PCR primer pair for the most closely linked SNP with MSI was developed as a codominant marker, and visualization of the PCR products on an agarose gel enabled rapid screening of male sterile C. japonica. The purpose is to investigate the clinical significance of prostatic calculi in patients with chronic prostatitis and to discuss the possible treatment.The data from 277 young males with CP/CPPS were analyzed prospectively. Symptom severity was measured using the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) and the International Prostatic Symptoms Score (IPSS). Sexual function was assessed by the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire. After four weeks of therapy, the NIH-CPSI, IPSS, and IIEF-5 tests were repeated. The variables were compared between patients with and without prostatic calcifications using the Students t-test or chi-square test. No significant differences were found between CP/CPPS patients with and without prostatic calcifications regarding age, body mass index, prostate volume, CPSI, IPSS and IIEF-5. Men with calcifications endured symptoms significantly longer (37.9 ± 25.2 versus 19.0 ± 16.4 months, P < 0.01), and had significantly higher white blood cell counts per high power field in expressed prostatic secretions (7.7 ± 12.8 versus 3.9 ± 4.7; P < 0.01), than patients without prostatic calcifications, who responded better to medication compared with patients with prostatic calcifications. In conclusion, patients with calcifications were more likely to have category IIIA disease and they required a longer medication period.
