Species in the genera Sirobasidium and Sirotrema (Tremellales, Tremellomycetes, Agaricomycotina, Basidiomycota) have been described based solely on the morphology of teleomorph, and many of them lack both isolates of anamorphic yeast state and nucleotide sequence data. Strains of Sirotrema translucens and Sirobasidium japonicum were established for the first time from basidiocarps collected in Japan. Also, an undescribed species in the genus Sirobasidium was isolated. Sirobasidium sp. was characterized by its apiculate epibasidia and 2-celled basidia divided by a longitudinal septum, which is a unique combination of characteristics in the genus. Although the phylogenetic placement of Sb. japonicum within the Tremellales was not resolved in our analysis, Sirobasidium sp. formed a well-supported monophyletic clade with Sb. magnum and Fibulobasidium spp., and Sirotrema translucens was located in the genus Phaeotremella. Mating experiments using single-basidiospore strains showed that Sb. japonicum produced basidia, epibasidia, and basidiospores on a nutrient-poor medium, and the life cycle was successfully completed in controlled conditions. Ticks transmit viruses responsible for severe emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, some of which have a significant impact on public health. In Japan, little is known about the distribution of tick-borne viruses. In this study, we collected and tested ticks to investigate the distribution of tick-borne arboviruses in Kyoto, Japan, and isolated the first Thogoto virus (THOV) to our knowledge from Haemaphysalis longicornis in far-eastern Asia. The Japanese isolate was genetically distinct from a cluster of other isolates from Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Various cell lines derived from mammals and ticks were susceptible to the isolate, but it was not pathogenic in mice. These results advance understanding of the distribution and ecology of THOV.

This report presents the outcome of prostate permanent brachytherapy (PPB). One hundred and seventy-two patients with clinically localized prostate cancer were treated with permanent brachytherapy using iodine-125 seeds (125-I) at Hiroshima University Hospital from July 2004 to June 2010. This study evaluated the efficacy of PPB in these patients. The median patient age was 69 years (range 53 to 82 years), the median prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value before biopsy was 6.75 ng/ml (range 3.5 to 47.9 ng/ml), and the median prostate volume was 23.1 ml (range 10.1 to 57 ml). The median follow-up was 37 months (range 1 to 72 months). The serum PSA levels decreased continuously after PPB throughout the entire follow-up period in 97% of patients without neoadjuvant hormonal therapy. No relapse occurred during the follow-up period in patients at low risk. Our 6-year experience suggests that PPB is effective for localized prostate cancer. Patients with prostate cancer that does not require combined external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) have the best chance of responding to treatment.
