Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with substantial morbidity for mothers and their offspring. While clinical and basic research activities on this important disease grow constantly, there is no concise analysis of global architecture of GDM research. Hence, it was the objective of this study to assess the global scientific performance chronologically, geographically and in relation to existing research networks and gender distribution of publishing authors.Study Design: On the basis of the New Quality and Quantity Indices in Science (NewQIS) platform, scientometric methods were combined with modern visualizing techniques such as density equalizing mapping, and the Web of Science database was used to assess GDM-related entries from 1900 to 2012.Results: Twelve thousand five hundred four GDM-related publications were identified and analyzed. The USA (4295 publications) and the UK (1354 publications) dominated the field concerning research activity, overall citations and country-specific Hirsch-Index, which quantified the impact of a country's published research on the scientific community. Semi-qualitative indices such as country-specific citation rates ranked New Zealand and the UK at top positions. Annual collaborative publications increased steeply between the years 1990 and 2012 (71 to 1157 respectively). Subject category analysis pointed to a minor interest of public health issues in GDM research. Gender analysis in terms of publication authorship revealed a clear dominance of the male gender until 2005; then a trend towards gender equity started and the activity of female scientists grew visibly in many countries. The country-specific gender analysis revealed large differences, i.e. female scientists dominated the scientific output in the USA, whereas the majority of research was published by male authors in countries such as Japan.Conclusion: This study provides the first global sketch of GDM research architecture. While North-American and Western-European countries were dominating the GDM-related scientific landscape, a disparity exists in terms of research output between developed and low-resource countries. Since GDM is linked to considerable mortality and morbidity of mothers and their offspring and constitutes a tremendous burden for the healthcare systems in underserved countries, our findings emphasize the need to address disparities by fostering research endeavors, public health programs and collaborative efforts in these nations. Article 9 of the Japanese constitution expressly renounces war as a means to resolve international disputes. Yet since its initial promulgation in 1947, Article 9 has been interpreted to allow Japan the right to self-defense. To that end, Japan today possesses one of the most powerful and modem militaries in the world. In the summer of 2014, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe circumvented the constitutional amendment process, and, through a cabinet decision, issued a "reinterpretation" of Article 9 that allowed Japan for the first time to engage in collective self-defense. The questionable constitutionality of Abe's reinterpretation engendered much debate and protest in Japan and abroad. The United States effectively ignored the domestic and international outcry and gave the reinterpretation its blessing, however, as it has desired greater assistance from the Japanese military since the beginning of the Cold War. Yet the unstable legal basis on which Abe's reinterpretation rests creates the very real danger that Japan's newly-declared right of collective self-defense could eventually be retracted, leaving the United States without the support upon which it has based new foreign policy commitments. This Note argues that the United States must take steps in order to prevent Japan's reinterpretation of Article 9 from becoming a Pyrrhic victory for American foreign policy. First, the United States should encourage Japan to legitimize any right of collective self-defense through traditional legal structures and thus solidify its reinterpretation of Article 9. Second, the United States should continue to reduce tensions between Japan and its neighbors before investing further resources into the Japanese side of regional disputes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the article new trends of public libraries in Japan are explored. After a general insight to the library system, features in selected public libraries in Tokyo and the Kansai region are presented. As manga are an important part of Japanese culture, their treatment in Japan’s public libraries and cultural institutions is shown in a particular chapter. The title of the article shows the special character of cultural life. New concepts take full effect when they are based on tradition. The inauguration of the National Library for Children and Young Adults in 2008 in Ueno/Tokyo which emerged from the imperial library can be considered as an example. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We have conducted a feasibility study for the geostationary monitoring of the diurnal variation of tropospheric NO2 over Tokyo. Using NO2 fields from a chemical transport model, synthetic spectra were created by a radiative transfer model, SCIATRAN, for summer and winter cases. We then performed a Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) analysis to retrieve NO2 slant column densities (SCDs), and after converting SCDs into vertical column densities (VCDs), we estimated the precision of the retrieved VCDs. The simulation showed that signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)⩾500 is needed to detect the diurnal variation and that SNR⩾1000 is needed to observe the local minimum occurring in the early afternoon (LT13–14) in summer. In winter, the detection of the diurnal variation during LT08–15 needs SNR⩾500, and SNR⩾1000 is needed if early morning (LT07) and early evening (LT16) are included. The currently discussed sensor specification for the Japanese geostationary satellite project, GMAP-Asia, which has a horizontal resolution of 10km and a temporal resolution of 1hr, has demonstrated the performance of a precision of several percent, which is approximately corresponding to SNR=1000–2000 during daytime and SNR⩾500 in the morning and evening. We also discuss possible biases caused by the temperature dependence of the absorption cross section utilized in the DOAS retrieval, and the effect of uncertainties of surface albedo and clouds on the estimation of precisions. This essay aims to reconsider the logic and nature of Japanese historical revisionism, with reference to similar instances in Germany. Attention is paid to the written texts and statements of the Study Group for a Liberal View of History, with particular emphasis on the manga of Kobayashi Yoshinori. This analysis of historical revisionism remains grounded in the many empirical studies on this phenomenon, but it seeks to supplement such research by focusing on the logical inconsistencies and gaps of this discourse. Introduction: Since the 2012 Multinational Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (MAPP) survey, several systemic treatments for psoriasis (PsO) and/or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) have been approved. The population-based UPLIFT survey was conducted to understand how perceptions of treatment-related outcomes have evolved, particularly for patients with mild to moderate PsO and/or PsA and their dermatologists. Methods: This population- and web-based survey was conducted from 2 March to 3 June 2020, in North America, Europe, and Japan. Adults with self-reported healthcare practitioner (HCP)-diagnosed PsO and/or PsA and dermatologists who spent > 50% of time treating patients and treated ≥ 20 patients with PsO, including plaque PsO, per month were included. Patient participants were recruited at random from online panels; dermatologists were recruited randomly from representative physician panels. Results: Of 264,054 patient responses, 3806 who self-reported an HCP diagnosis of PsO and/or PsA were included in the final sample; 67% had PsO alone, 28% had PsO and PsA, and 5% had PsA alone. The estimated population prevalence of psoriatic disease was 7% (PsO only: 4%; PsO and PsA: 2%; PsA only: 1%). Most patients (78%) reported PsO-involved body surface area (BSA) ≤ 3 palms, and ~ 90% or more reported itching, redness, flaking, and scales. Many PsO patients without diagnosed PsA reported musculoskeletal symptoms suggestive of PsA (63%). Across BSA categories, approximately one in four patients was not currently receiving treatment and > 50% had Dermatology Life Quality Index score > 5. Patients and dermatologists had different perceptions of PsO severity, office visit discussions, treatment goals, and treatment satisfaction. The survey was conducted during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which could have affected assessments of patient-reported outcomes and ability to have in-person HCP visits. Conclusions: Patients with PsO and PsA in UPLIFT reported high disease burden, including patients with limited skin involvement. An opportunity exists to align patient and dermatologist perceptions to optimize management of PsO and PsA. Adults with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis and dermatologists who treated at least 20 patients with psoriasis per month were included. There were 3806 patients who participated; of these, most had psoriasis and few had psoriatic arthritis. Most patients (78%) with mild to moderate psoriasis had a limited area of skin affected by psoriasis. Psoriasis symptoms were common and included itching, redness, flaking, and scales. Many patients without a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis reported symptoms that could be related to this disease (such as joint discomfort). Although many patients had psoriasis symptoms, approximately one in four was not currently receiving treatment and more than half reported psoriasis impacted their quality of life. Patients and dermatologists had different perceptions of psoriasis severity, office visit discussions, treatment goals, and treatment satisfaction. There is an opportunity to improve treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and to better align patient and physician perceptions of psoriasis.
