Understanding the migratory community dynamics of river networks is important for maintaining lotic system integrity. River animals migrate to their preferred habitats in spatiotemporally heterogeneous river environments. Spring-fed habitats are uniquely characterized by stable temperature and flow regimes, which create suitable spawning habitats for the chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta. O. keta exhibits "run up" to its birthplace for spawning, especially during floods. Because the eggs deposited by this anadromous fish are nutritious and actively consumed by freshwater animals, the location and timing of O. keta spawning events affect the spatiotemporal accumulation of mobile consumers. In this study, we examined changes in temporal population density in spawning O. keta and a mobile consumer (juvenile O. masou masou) in a lowland, spring-fed tributary in northern Japan during a 48.5-mm autumn rainfall event. In both species, population density increased, and then decreased, after the rainfall event. In O. keta, these changes were closely associated with rainfall intensity, whereas in O. masou masou the peak was delayed until 3 days after the rainfall event. A comparison of the gut contents of O. masou masou sampled from a spring-fed tributary and an adjacent non-spring-fed tributary indicated greater consumption of O. keta eggs in the spring-fed tributary. These results suggested that preferential migration of O. keta into spring-fed tributaries for spawning induces subsequent accumulation of juvenile O. masou masou, in turn increasing O. keta egg consumption. When forest disturbance impacts adjacent headwater streams, the recovery of habitat conditions and populations can take over several decades. Thus, considering long‐term, historical legacies of forest disturbances is key for understanding and managing forest–stream linkages. We focused on small‐scale forest disturbances such as small‐block harvesting and landslides. We compared the long‐term (past 100 years) cumulative effects between the anthropogenic and natural forest disturbances on stream conditions and the abundance of a headwater specialist, Scopura montana (Plecoptera: Scopuridae).Sampling was conducted in 10 m reaches of 39 first‐order streams with a catchment area up to 5.9 ha during late summer in central Japan. We quantified past clearcut logging areas using plantation records of each harvest block and past landslide areas from contour maps within each catchment.Piecewise structural equation models using the cumulative area of each forest disturbance as an independent variable, revealed different indirect effects of clearcut logging (average area: 1.74 ha) and landslides (0.21 ha) on S. montana abundance through modified stream conditions. Canopy openness and wetted channel width were higher with a larger logged area, and S. montana abundance was lower with higher water temperature (daily maximum). When the magnitude of clearcut logging was similar to the landslide area (<0.77 ha), the negative relationship between water temperature and S. montana abundance was also significant in the model. Streambed roughness and wetted channel width were greater with larger landslide area but there were no significant links between stream conditions and S. montana abundance.Our results suggest that clearcut logging can cause long‐term impacts by exposing the stream surface to solar radiation owing to delayed canopy closure. The preference of S. montana is for cold water conditions in summer. Controlling forest harvesting along streams could benefit forest–stream management, as could including consideration of disturbance‐driven cycles for sustaining headwater populations. The stable flow and temperature regimes of spring-fed streams are distinct from the dynamic regimes of other streams. We investigated differences in habitat and macroinvertebrate assemblages among three stream types (spring-fed tributary, non-spring-fed tributary, and mainstream) in a clastic lowland of northern Japan. Current velocity was the slowest in the spring-fed reach, where the percent of fine sediment deposition was also 3.8–11.4 times higher than in the other stream types. The standing stock of detritus was also greater in the spring-fed reach. These results suggest that the stable flow regime in the spring-fed stream leads to the accumulation of fine sediment and detritus on the streambed. Oligochaeta and chironomids, which are burrower-gatherers, were remarkably abundant in the spring-fed reach. Total macroinvertebrate abundance was 3.8–12.2 times greater in the spring-fed reach than in the other stream types. Sprawler-grazer ephemeropterans were the most abundant in the mainstream reaches, likely due to higher primary productivity. Allomyia sp, which depend on cool spring-fed habitats, was found only in the spring-fed reach. The indicator species analysis also indicated multiple taxa of detritivores and Allomyia sp. for the spring-fed tributary. The macroinvertebrate assemblage in the spring-fed reach was characterized by numerous burrowers, collector-gatherers, and crenobiont taxa, highlighting the uniqueness and its contribution to enhance beta diversity in river networks. Deer overabundance is a contributing factor in the degradation of plant communities and ecosystems worldwide. The management and conservation of the deer-affected ecosystems requires us to urgently grasp deer population trends and to identify the factors that affect them. In this study, we developed a Bayesian state–space model to estimate the population dynamics of sika deer (Cervus nippon) in a cool-temperate forest in Japan, where wolves (Canis lupus hodophilax) are extinct. The model was based on field data collected from block count surveys, road count surveys by vehicles, mortality surveys during the winter, and nuisance control for 12 years (2007–2018). We clarified the seasonal and annual fluctuation of the deer population. We found a peak of deer abundance (2010) over 12 years. In 2011 the estimated deer abundance decreased drastically and has remained at a low level then. The deer abundance gradually increased from April to December during 2013–2018. The seasonal fluctuation we detected could reflect the seasonal migration pattern of deer and the population recruitment through fawn births in early summer. In our model, snowfall accumulation, which can be a lethal factor for deer, may have slightly affected their mortality during the winter. Although we could not detect a direct effect of snow on population dynamics, snowfall decrease due to global warming may decelerate the winter migration of deer; subsequently, deer staying on-site may intensively forage evergreen perennial plants during the winter season. The nuisance control affected population dynamics. Even in wildlife protection areas and national parks where hunting is regulated, nuisance control could be effective in buffering the effect of deer browsing on forest ecosystems. Collection and cooking of wild vegetables have provided seasonal enjoyments for Japanese local people as provisioning and cultural ecosystem services. However, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011 caused extensive radiocesium contamination of wild vegetables. Restrictions on commercial shipments of wild vegetables have been in place for the last 10 years. Some species, including buds of Aralia elata, are currently showing radiocesium concentrations both above and below the Japanese reference level for food (100 Bq/kg), implying that there are factors decreasing and increasing the 137Cs concentration. Here, we evaluated easy-to-measure environmental variables (dose rate at the soil surface, organic soil layer thickness, slope steepness, and presence/absence of decontamination practices) and the 137Cs concentrations of 40 A. elata buds at 38 locations in Fukushima Prefecture to provide helpful information on avoiding collecting highly contaminated buds. The 137Cs concentrations in A. elata buds ranged from 1 to 6,280 Bq/kg fresh weight and increased significantly with increases in the dose rate at the soil surface (0.10-6.50 μSv/h). Meanwhile, the 137Cs concentration in A. elata buds were not reduced by decontamination practices. In this study, the effect of temperature, water quality, and the impact of an intense typhoon event on change in 137 Cs concentration in the water of agricultural and forested rivers near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (Japan) was evaluated using monthly stationary observations obtained under baseflow conditions 2.8-10.6 years after the nuclear accident in 2011. The dissolved 137 Cs concentration fluctuated seasonally with water temperature in all rivers, and the increase in dissolved 137 Cs concentration for unit increase in temperature was higher in forested rivers than in agricultural rivers. The relationship between water temperature and the apparent distribution coefficient of 137 Cs well followed the van 't Hoff equation in the two agricultural rivers, where the enthalpy of reaction was estimated as -15.6 and -19.6 kJ mol -1 . The van 't Hoff equation was not well followed for a forested river, where the suspended solids mainly comprised organic matter, suggesting that the dominant process determining dissolved 137 Cs concentrations in forested rivers is not only water temperature effect on ion exchange, but rather the input of 137 Cs and K + (competing with 137 Cs for exchange sites on mineral particles) into the water phase via litter leaching. Suspended solids concentrations in agricultural rivers correlated negatively with 137 Cs concentrations in suspended solids, suggesting an increased proportion of coarse particles or the input of soils with low 137 Cs concentration from decontaminated agricultural land. Forest-stream ecotones possess prominent detritus-based food webs, and 137 Cs-contaminated litter can influence the contamination levels of animals inhabiting such ecosystems. The effects of leaching on contaminated litter induce greater absolute differences between the 137 Cs concentrations of forest and stream litter in more contaminated sites. Because 137 Cs concentrations in litter can be attenuated temporally, spatiotemporal patterns in the differences in 137 Cs concentrations between forest and stream litter may vary depending on both the amount of 137 Cs deposition and the passage of time. To test this hypothesis, we sampled coniferous needle and broad-leaved deciduous litter in forests and streams at seven forested headwater sites affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident 3.24 and 11.24 years after the accident. We found that 137 Cs concentrations in the two litter types were one order of magnitude lower 11.24 years after the accident than 3.24 years afterwards. The absolute difference in 137 Cs activity concentrations of litter between forest and stream ecosystems was higher at more contaminated sites both 3.24 and 11.24 years after the accident. The spatiotemporal changes in litter contamination provide insight into 137 Cs dynamics and complex transfer in the detritus-based food webs of forest-stream ecotones.

In this study, we investigated the impact of rainfall on runoff, soil erosion and consequently on the discharge of radioactive cesium in agricultural fields in Fukushima prefecture using a rainfall simulator. Simulated heavy rainfalls (50 mm h(-1)) generated significant runoff and soil erosion. The average concentration of radioactive cesium (the sum of (134)Cs and (137)Cs) in the runoff sediments was ∼3500 Bq kg(-1) dry soil, more than double the concentrations measured in the field soils which should be considered in studies using the (137)Cs loss to estimate long-term soil erosion. However, the estimated mass of cesium discharged through one runoff event was less than 2% of the cesium inventory in the field. This suggested that cesium discharge via soil erosion is not a significant factor in reducing the radioactivity of contaminated soils in Fukushima prefecture. However, the eroded sediment carrying radioactive cesium will deposit into the river systems and potentially pose a radioactivity risk for aquatic living organisms.

In Japanese forests suffering from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, litter fall provides a large amount of radiocesium from forests to streams. Submerged litter is processed to become a vital food resource for various stream organisms through initial leaching and subsequent decomposition. Although leaching from litter can detach radiocesium similarly to potassium, radiocesium leaching and its migration are poorly understood. We examined both radiocesium and potassium leaching to the water column and radiocesium allocation to minerals (glass beads, silica sand, and vermiculite) in the laboratory using soaked litter with and without minerals on a water column. The mineral types did not affect radiocesium leaching from litter, but soaking in water for 1, 7, and 30 days decreased the radiocesium concentration in litter by ×0.71, ×0.66, and ×0.56, respectively. Meanwhile, the 1-, 7-, and 30-day experiments decreased potassium concentration in litter by ×0.17, ×0.11, and ×0.09, respectively. Leached radiocesium remained in a dissolved form when there was no mineral phases present in the water, whereas there was sorption onto the minerals when they were present. In particular, vermiculite adsorbed radiocesium by two to three orders of magnitude more effectively than the other minerals. Because radiocesium forms (such as that dissolved or adsorbed to organic matter or minerals) can further mobilize to ecosystems, our findings will increase our understanding regarding the dynamics of radiocesium in stream ecosystems., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. In Japan, rice paddies have acted as substitute habitats for pond-breeding frogs. However, frog populations are declining due to the loss of habitat and environmental changes in rice paddy areas. Frogs need both aquatic and terrestrial habitats to complete their life history; in rice paddy areas, levees that surround rice paddies provide terrestrial habitats for basking, foraging, and shelter from predators. Studying microhabitat use at levees is important to elucidating the ecological roles of levees and to properly managing them to support frog populations. In this study, we conducted surveys in lowland modernized rice paddy areas in Shiga Prefecture in which a common species, Hyla japonica, and an endangered species, Pelophylax porosa brevipoda, were found. We captured frogs at levees and recorded environmental factors related to levee vegetation, rice paddy conditions, and weather. We constructed generalized linear mixed models to examine the effects of environmental factors on juvenile and adult H. japonica and on small and large juveniles, females, and males of P. p. brevipoda. Our results showed distinct microhabitat uses at levees in different species, sexes, and body sizes. In general, abundance was high at levees with vegetation that provided shelter. The water depth in rice paddies negatively influenced juvenile H. japonica and large juvenile and small female P. p. brevipoda, and positively influenced small male P. p. brevipoda. The maintenance of a mosaic structure of levees was important not only to support frog populations but also to maintain frog diversity in the area.

In Japan, rice paddies have acted as a substitute habitat for pond-breeding frogs. However, since the 1950s, agricultural modernization has altered the rice paddy environment, and pond-breeding frog populations have been decreasing. This agricultural modernization has led to rice paddy fragmentation via roadways and the construction of deep channels. To assess the influences of habitat fragmentation, we compared the distribution of two pond-breeding frogs, a common species, Hyla japonica, and an endangered species, Pelophylax porosa brevipoda, around a deep roadside ditch. In Shiga prefecture, we selected two rice paddies along a roadway and recorded the number of frogs and their snout-vent length (SVL) at the levee of a rice paddy, ditch, bank, and adjacent roadway. In total, we identified 1,293 P. p. brevipoda and 181 H. japonica. Most P. p. brevipoda were either at the levee or ditch, and the number of this species found in the ditch was much higher than in any other location in July and October. The SVLs of P. p. brevipoda found in the ditch in June were smaller than those in October. Most H. japonica were at the levee or bank, and there were no apparent temporal or spatial patterns of distribution. Our results suggest that the ditch acts as a barrier to juveniles in early summer and to all frogs during autumn for P. p. brevipoda but not for H. japonica. For long-term conservation, it is important to study the movement patterns related to life history and rice paddy management.
