In order to investigate the relationship between feather mites and their hosts taking into account host ecology I examined relationships among feather mite load, and sex, age, wing length and body‐condition in the white wagtail Motacilla alba lugens. I captured 288 wagtails in January (the first period) 2002 at a communal roost in Osaka, central Japan. All the wagtails were ringed individually, aged as yearlings (first‐winter) or adults (older) and sexed. I measured wing length, tarsus length and body mass, calculated a body condition index (BCI) and determined the feather mite loads (FML) of each individual by visual examination of the flight feathers of one wing, giving a score using the range 0–5. I recaptured 121 wagtails after an average of 45 days (the second period), and redetermined their FML. FML was not correlated with wing length or body‐condition. Yearlings had higher FML than adults in both periods. Males had greater FML than females in the second period. No significant differences in FML between the first and second periods were detected among yearling females, or adult males, but adult females had significantly lower FML and yearling males had significantly higher FML than the other age–sex classes in the second period. The sexual difference was caused by the lower FML of adult females and the higher FML of yearling males. The BCI of yearling males was the lowest among the four combinations of sex and age‐class. I conclude that wagtails may be able to prevent overpopulation of feather mites on their own plumage. The ability to control mite populations may be related to the condition of the host. Ovophis okinavensis is an endemic pitviper of the subtropical region of Japan. Based on information from various localities, the species has been considered a dietary generalist that exploits various terrestrial vertebrates. We analyzed stomach contents of O. okinavensis in a northern mountain area on Okinawa Island, based on data of a 10-years-study, to examine its trophic features at the population level. We recovered a total of 461 prey items, which were comprised of six, three, five, and three species of frogs, reptiles, birds, and mammals, respectively. Approximately 93% of dietary items consisted of frogs, the majority of which belonged to two explosively breeding species aggregating to restricted spots along the stream only during their reproductive season (winter). On the other hand, from April to November, the snake mainly depended on vertebrates other than frogs. Neither an ontogenetic dietary shift nor intersexual dietary divergence was evident although males tended to exploit one of the two explosively breeding frog species more frequently than females. There were weak positive correlations between snake size and prey size, but large snakes did not drop small prey items from their diet. Average body mass of each prey item was only 5.2% of snake body mass. Characteristics of trophic features of O. okinavensis of this population, such as extremely high dependency on frogs in winter, the absence of ontogenetic dietary shift, and utilization of small sized prey, are discussed in comparison with other viperids. Background: A sex difference in the second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D, males < females) has been described in Japanese fetuses and children, and its possible links to autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have been discussed. Accordingly, this sexual difference in representative neonates merits examination.Aims: This study aimed to examine 2D:4D measurements and sexual differences in Japanese toddlers aged 1.5 years.Study Design and Subjects: The digit lengths used to calculate 2D:4D were measured using an easy-to-use photography method. A total of 1045 JECS-A (the Aichi regional sub-cohort of the Japan Environment and Children's Study) children (males, 523; females, 522) aged 1.5 years were analyzed.Results: The mean ages for the males and females were 575.3 ± 13.1 and 575.9 ± 17.1 days, respectively. Histograms of left and right 2D:4D were normally distributed regardless of sex (left male, 0.909 ± 0.048; left female, 0.913 ± 0.049, d = 0.08; right male, 0.938 ± 0.055; right female, 0.937 ± 0.049, d = 0.02). Because of high dispersion in the data, t-tests did not support a significant sex difference in 2D:4D. Post-hoc statistical power was calculated as 0.124 and the effect size for the sex difference in 2D:4D was 0.036.Conclusions: This study failed to confirm sexual differences in 2D:4D in 1.5-year-old Japanese children. This may be because digit measurement is difficult in this group, resulting in reduced effect sizes, or because rapid growth attenuates the in utero sexual dimorphism.
