Aim: Obstetrical guidelines were established in Japan in 2008, and obstetrical diagnoses and treatments were subsequently standardized nationally. We examined changes in the preterm birth rate (PTBR) and extremely preterm birth rate (EPTBR) following the introduction of such guidelines. Methods: Information on 50 706 432 live births in Japan between 1979 and 2021, including Japanese reproductive medicine, the childbearing age of pregnant women, and the employment status of reproductive‐age women between 2007 and 2020, were obtained from the Japanese government and academic societies. Regression analysis was used to compare chronological changes nationally and those of eight Japanese regions. Regional and national average PTBRs and EPTBRs from 2007 to 2020 were compared by using a repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: From 1979 to 2007, PTBRs and EPTBRs in Japan increased significantly. However, from 2008, the national PTBR and EPTBR decreased until 2020 (p < 0.001) and 2019 (p = 0.02), respectively. From 2007 to 2020, overall PTBR and EPTBR were 5.68% and 0.255%, respectively. A significant difference in the PTBR and EPTBR existed between the eight Japanese regions. During this period, the number of pregnancies using assisted reproductive technology increased from 19 595 to 60 381, pregnant women became older, the employment rate of those of reproductive age increased, and nonregular employment was 54%, which was 2.5 times higher than for men. Conclusions: In Japan, after obstetrical guidelines were enacted in 2008, PTRBs decreased significantly even under the pressure of increasing preterm births. A new feather mite Pelargolichus orientalissp. nov. is described from the Oriental White Stork, Ciconia boyciana Swinhoe, 1873, one of the world's most endangered bird species. This mite species was collected from feathers of the Oriental White Storks bred in the Tama Zoological Park in Japan. The native population of the Oriental White Stork and feather mites associated with this bird had been extinct in Japan since 1986. Wild individuals of this bird species were transported from the Eurasian Continent to Japanese breeding facilities, and in the 2000s, a small wild population was restored. The new mite species is presently distributed in natural fields in Japan along with its introduced host population. Riccardoella (Proriccardoella) reaumuriFain & van Goethem, 1986 has been reported in terrestrial mollusks in France and the Japanese Archipelago. The purpose of this study was to describe two new subspecies of this mite species from Japan based on their morphological characters. Mites were sampled from terrestrial mollusks at 13 locations in Japan from Oct. 16, 2016 to Nov. 13, 2020. The sampled mites and specimens deposited in museum were also used for morphological observations. As a result of principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis based on morphology of dorsal setae on idiosoma and solenidia on palptarsus and tarsus I and II, mite specimens from France and Japan were divided into three groups: Group 1 (mites sampled in France), Group 2 (Okinawajima Is.) and Group 3 (the area from Kyushu Is. to Hokkaido Is.). The solenidia shapes also differed between the groups. We propose that the mites of each of the three groups should be defined as subspecies based on these morphological differences. Our phylogenetic tree of the two subspecies based on amino acid sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) confirmed that these Japanese mites are members of the genus, family Ereynetidae. From 2000 to 2019, Japan's reproductive-age population gradually declined by 24%. In comparison, the Chlamydia trachomatis infection rate increased from 2016, with the syphilis infection rate increasing more sharply from 2014. Since 2013, the numbers of foreign tourists to Japan have also increased. From 2011 to 2018, the rate of increase in tourists was 5.02 times, while the rate of increase in syphilis patients was higher at 22.4 times. The lack of a one-to-one relationship between foreign tourists and syphilis cases suggests that cases of syphilis were transmitted to others. Although the prevalence of syphilis in the tourists' home countries (Korea in 2014 and China in 2013) was 20–30 times higher than that in Japan, the Japanese sex industry did not discriminate against foreign tourists, leading to increased STI infections in Japanese female sex workers. Indeed, from 2017 to 2018, a history of working in the sex industry for six months was identified as a risk factor for syphilis. The rise in Chlamydia trachomatis infections has lagged behind that of syphilis by two years, with the rate of increase lower. We suspect the difference in increasing rates of syphilis and chlamydial infections is due to the different methods of infection: syphilis can be transmitted by light physical contact, such as a kiss, whereas chlamydia requires close sexual contact, such as oral sex or sexual intercourse. The present paper provides information on juvenile stages of seven intertidal oribatid mite species from the East Asian region. Larva and nymphs of the fortuyniid species Fortuynia churaumi, F. shibai, F. rotunda and Alismobates reticulatus are described and details about juvenile morphology of the selenoribatid species, Arotrobates granulatus, Indopacifica taiyo and I. tyida are given. Juveniles of the genus Arotrobates are reported for the first time and strong ventral femoral carinae are supposed to be diagnostic characters. Basically, the conservative morphology of immature stages could be confirmed in every studied taxon and its importance for phylogenetic considerations is emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Difflugia biwae Kawamura, 1918 has been redescribed. Here, the neotype of D. biwae, which was newly collected from its type locality, Lake Biwa, is designated to the species to clarify its taxonomic status. Morphometric characterization of D. biwae was performed. A statistically significant correlation between body length and shell collar diameter was identified in the population of the Lake Biwa, but this correlation was not significant in the population from the Mulan Lake. The PCA scatterplot indicates that the Mulan Lake population could be a separate taxon identified by shorter protuberance length and body length. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Riccardoella tokyoensis is a snail parasite recently recorded in Japan. To understand the basic ecology of this mite, we surveyed the life history of a population, including seasonal dynamics, host range, and geographical distribution in East Japan. Seasonal dynamics of the mite were studied in Rinshi-no-mori Park, Tokyo, Japan, from June 2016 to May 2018; thereafter, the morphology of each stage was described. In this park, the host population was infected with the mite in all seasons; however, the prevalence and infection intensities were highest during the warm seasons. Larvae and nymphs were found in the warm seasons. Proto- and tritonymphs were uncommon. To study the host range and geographical distribution, we sampled 1135 terrestrial mollusks from 16 families at 21 locations in Kanto and east Tokai areas from June 2016 to May 2020. Mites were detected at 13 locations, and only clausiliid snails were infected with the mite. Through a laboratory experiment, our observations confirmed that the mite was transmitted to the host lung via the pneumostome. None of the artificially infected snails died, although we maintained the snails for 2 months. No inflammation was found in naturally infected host tissue, suggesting that their virulence against the host snails was low. Riccardoella tokyoensis was not found in the litter layer in the field surveys, and no mite was observed on the external surface of the hosts, suggesting that the major habitat of this mite was the host lung. Soil protists are rarely included in ecotoxicological investigations, despite their fundamental role in ecological processes. Moreover, testate amoebae and diatoms contribute considerably to silicon fluxes in soils. We investigated the effects of heavy metals on testate amoebae (species and individual densities) and diatoms (individual densities) in aged soils of a floodplain (Watarase retarding basin, Japan) taking soil samples from two unpolluted reference sites and two polluted sites. The total concentrations of Cu, Pb, and Zn in soil were higher at the polluted sites as compared with the reference sites. The available concentrations of Co, Cu, and Zn in CaCl2 extracts were higher at the polluted sites but available Pb was not detectable. Testate amoeba taxonomic richness was higher in the reference sites (45/38 taxa) than in the polluted sites (36/27 taxa). The reference sites had higher diatom and amoeba densities than the polluted sites. There was a significant negative correlation between total testate amoeba density and heavy metal concentration (available Co), while significant negative correlations were found between diatom density and Co, Cu, and Zn (available and total concentration). Densities of Cyclopyxis kahli cyclostoma, Centropyxis spp., and Trinema complanatum were negatively correlated to concentrations of available heavy metals. The observed decrease in individual numbers due to heavy metal pollution resulted in a considerable decline in protozoic (testate amoebae) and protophytic (pennate diatoms) silicon pools. The Ameronothridae are recorded for the first time from Japanese coasts with the new species Ameronothrus yoichi sp. n. from Hokkaido. The report of this species represents the most southern occurrence of an Ameronothrus species in the Asian Pacific region. Ameronothrus yoichi sp. n. can be easily distinguished from its congeners by the conspicuously pusticulate body surface and the loss of dorsal companion setae d on all genua in the adult stage. Based on adult and juvenile morphology, a close relation to Ameronothrus maculatus and A. schneideri is suggested. Ameronothrus yoichi sp. n. is classified as a lichenivorous inhabitant of sediment-free rocky coastal substrates. Due to a lack of genetic sequence data of nearly all ameronothrid species a molecular genetic comparison is yet unfeasible, but a Bayesian inference tree based on the 18S rRNA gene shows a paraphyletic clustering of the ameronothrid A. yoichi sp. n. and Paraquanothrus grahami. The first detailed description of adults of Achipteria setulosa Golosova, 1981 with illustrations are provided, based on materials from central Japan. This species is placed in the subgenus Achipteria (Izuachipteria) Balogh & Mahunka, 1979. In addition, the species grouping of the known species in the genus Achipteria is briefly discussed, and three species-groups are proposed based on the structure of the lamellar complex. Furthermore, data on distribution, diversity and habitat ecology of all known species of Achipteriidae in Japan are presented, and a key is provided for the identification of recorded species in this country. The majority of achipteriid species found in Japan are known to be widely distributed in the vast areas of the northern hemisphere; only two species have restricted distributions in Japan. Most species of Achipteriidae in Japan are inhabitants of the litter of various forests, such as natural broad-leaved forests in high mountainous areas, soils of grasslands, wetlands and mosses growing on rocks. Ophiocordyceps pulvinata, a pathogen of ants, is formally described as a new species. Genus level designation of this species is difficult due to several apparently conflicting morphological and ecological characters. Affinity with Ophiocordyceps is suggested by the dark color stroma and ascospore morphology. However, the species was included in a book of entomopathogenic fungi of Japan as Torrubiella sp. due to the production of perithecia on an astipitate stroma. Phylogenetic analyses of molecular data support a close relationship with O. unilateralis, a finding consistent with morphological characteristics of the color, asci and ascospores and ecological traits of host affiliation. Thus, O. pulvinata represents another example of the loss of stipe for the hypocrealean arthropod pathogenic fungi and highlights the utility of asci and ascospore morphology as taxonomically informative characters of closely related taxa. Abstract: We investigated a Histiobalantium natans viridis population from the ancient Lake Biwa in Japan, using live observation, silver impregnation, and the small subunit rRNA gene sequence. The morphological and molecular data show, with high support, a close relationship of Histiobalantium, Schizocalyptra and Pleuronema, supporting the family Pleuronematidae Kent, whose nearest relatives are the Cyclidiidae Ehrenberg. A family Histiobalantiidae Puytorac and Corliss is not supported, either by the nucleotide sequences or the morphologic data, except for the curious dorsal location of the cytopyge. Likewise, the data do not support inclusion of Histiobalantium in the family Sulcigeridae Gajewskaja, as very recently suggested by Jankowski, whose classification is based on a misidentified Sulcigera comosa. Further, there are good reasons to synonymize the genus Gajewskiella Obolkina with Histiobalantium. The European and Asian populations of H. natans differ significantly in the structure of adoral membranelle 1, suggesting that they are different species. However, there is some indication that the differences are caused by deficient data on the European H. natans, which is thus in need of detailed redescription. This applies also to the North American Histiobalantium agile Stokes which is probably not conspecific with the Eurasian H. natans. The status of the forma H. natans viridis and H. natans nigricans is not known because detailed data from nigricans are lacking. We prefer subspecific rank at the present state of knowledge. Levicoleps biwae n. gen., n. sp. was discovered in organic mud on the shore of Lake Biwa, Japan. Its morphology and small subunit rRNA gene sequence were studied with standard methods. Further, we established a terminology for the colepid armour and selected four features for genus recognition: the number of armour tiers, the structure of the tier plates, the presence/absence of armour spines, and the number of adoral organelles (three or five). The Japanese colepid, a barrel-shaped ciliate with an average size of 75 × 45 μm, has six armour tiers and hirtus-type tier plates, but lacks armour spines, both in the environment and in laboratory culture. Thus, it is considered to represent a new genus. This rank is supported by the considerable genetic distance (7%) from the common Coleps hirtus. Although L. biwae looks quite similar to C. hirtus in vivo, it is very likely most closely related to Coleps amphacanthus, a species with conspicuous armour spines, as indicated by body size, the number of ciliary rows and, especially, the multiple caudal cilia. Lake Biwa is about four million years old and inhabited by many endemic organisms, ranging from algae to large fish. Thus, we suspect that L. biwae is restricted to Lake Biwa or, at least, to Asia. Based on literature data and the generic features established, we also propose the new genus Reticoleps for Coleps remanei Kahl, 1933, and resurrect the genus Pinacocoleps Diesing, 1865 to include Coleps incurvus Ehrenberg, 1833, Coleps pulcher Spiegel, 1926, Coleps tessalatus Kahl, 1930 and, probably, Baikalocoleps quadratus Obolkina, 1995a. Our aims were to evaluate the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis (BV), Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) infection and Mobiluncus spp. infection among pregnant women in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan according to the month and year of the first prenatal visit, and to evaluate their risk factors. The annual rate of BV increased from 13.6% in 1993 to 21.4% in 2000. The annual rate of C. trachomatis infection was relatively constant. The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis, C. trachomatis infection and Mobiluncus spp. infection over the 8-year period was 18.2%, 4.2%, and 4.1%, respectively. The prevalence of the three infections was significantly higher among teenagers and among women with a history of D & C. The prevalence of C. trachomatis and Mobiluncus spp. infections was significantly higher among women with no history of delivery. BV was not associated with parity on multivariate analysis. The monthly prevalence of BV was significantly higher in May than in December, and the monthly prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was high in August. The differences in the annual and monthly infection patterns between BV and C. trachomatis infection suggest that the etiologies of the two infections differ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Elevation gradients have been useful to study distributional patterns of soil organisms since the time of Humboldt but only recently these patterns have been studied for soil microorganisms. Here we report the results on species diversity and composition of soil- and moss-dwelling testate amoeba assemblages along a 1400 m elevation gradient (904-2377 m a.s.l.) on Mount Fuji (Japan) from temperate forest to alpine vegetation. In total, 95 testate amoeba taxa belonging to 29 genera were identified. The core of testate amoeba assemblages was formed by ubiquitous species such as Trinema lineare, Euglypha laevis, Cryptodifflugia oviformis, and Trinema complanatum. However, several taxa with limited geographic distribution were also observed (e.g., Centropyxis latideflandriana, C. stenodeflandriana, Plagiopyxis cf. barrosi, Heleopera rectangularis, and Distomatopyxis couillardi). Species diversity indices (species richness and Shannon's index) were characterised by bell-shaped patterns peaking at ∼ 1700 m in the subalpine mixed conifer-deciduous forest. The species composition of testate amoeba assemblages was best explained by the vegetation types which accounted for 12.3% of the total variation. The objective of this paper is to redescribe two feather mites, Compressalges nipponiae Dubinin, 1950 (Caudiferidae) and Freyanopterolichus nipponiae Dubinin, 1953 (Kramerellidae), based on samples collected from the last two individuals of the Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon (Temminck, 1835) from the native Japanese populations, which had been extirpated in 2003. Our study provides detailed description of the leg and idiosomal chaetotaxy, and many morphological structures, which were missed or misinterpreted in the original publications.

Two new species of the cockroach genus Eucorydia Hebard, 1929 from the Nansei Islands in Southwest Japan were compared to two closely related congeners, Eucorydia yasumatsui Asahina, 1971 and Eucorydia dasytoides (Walker, 1868). Eucorydia donanensis Yanagisawa, Sakamaki, and Shimano sp. nov. from Yonaguni-jima Island was characterized by an overall length of 12.5-14.5 mm in males. The dorsal side of the male abdomen was entirely dark purple and there was an obscure orange band running down the middle of the tegmen. Eucorydia tokaraensis Yanagisawa, Sakamaki, and Shimano sp. nov. was characterized by an overall length of 12.0-13.0 mm in males and a distinct orange band running down the middle of the tegmen. Eucorydia yasumatsui , E. donanensis , E. tokaraensis and the zonata population of E. dasytoides were divided into four lineages in a maximum-likelihood tree generated from a dataset concatenated from five (two nuclear, 28S rRNA, histone H3, and three mitochondrial, COII, 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA) genes. We recognized the three Japanese lineages E. yasumatsui , E. donanensis , and E. tokaraensis as distinct species, which were also supported by the pairwise genetic distances (5.4-7.8%, K2P) of the COI sequences. Morphometric analysis was performed on the genitalia. A principal component analysis plot revealed that the sizes of the genitalia in the three Japanese species were similar to each other and smaller than that of the zonata population of E. dasytoides . The analysis also revealed that the three Japanese species were distinguished from each other by combinations of the sizes of L3 and L7 sclerites and the shape of R2 sclerite, with some overlapping exceptions.

The Japanese islands represent one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Their geological history and present geography resulted in a high number of endemic species in nearly all major metazoan clades. We investigated the phylogeography of three different intertidal mite species from the Ryukyu islands and southern mainland by means of morphometry and molecular genetics. None of the species represents an endemic, nearly all show distributions ranging over at least the southern and central Ryukyus. Two species, Fortuynia shibai and F. churaumi sp. n. clearly represent sister species that are derived from a common Eastern ancestor. Molecular genetic results indicate that these species separated approx. 3 Ma before the opening of the Okinawa trough, whereas F. shibai most likely showed an ancestral distribution stretching from the central Ryukyus across the Tokara strait to Japanese mainland, whereas F. churaumi probably evolved somewhere south of the Tokara strait. Phylogenetic data further indicates that long periods of isolation resulted in heterogeneous genetic structure but subsequent low sea level stands during Pleistocene allowed recent expansion and gene flow between island populations. Comparing these patterns with those of other animals, these tiny wingless mites apparently show better dispersal abilities than partially volant terrestrial organism groups.

A species of oribatid mites, Pergalumna amamiensis was collected from Amami-Ohshima Island, Ishigaki Island, and Okinawa Island, Southwestern Japan. The specimens were studied in detail, and supplementary descriptions are provided; these include features of the rostrum, the subcapitulum and the surface pattern of pteromorphs. The main morphological traits for this species are summarized as follows; body length 519-570 μm, body width 363-410 μm, rostral tip pointed, sensillus with a long stalk covered by minute barbs, porose areas Aa bulbous, porose areas A1, A2, and A3 circular, surface of pteromorphs ornamented by fine granular structure and dense wrinkles, fine granular structure on prodorsum, subcapitulum, genital plates and anal plates, median pore on the notogaster represented as single pore.

A new species of oribatid mite, Zachvatkinibates erimo sp. nov., is described from a sandy beach in Hokkaido, North Japan. The new species exhibits a clear sexual dimorphism, showing enlarged areae porosae on the notogaster of the male. A key is provided to sexually dimorphic species of Zachvatkinibates.

Although earthworms are hermaphroditic animals with biparental sexual reproduction, some parthenogenetic species have been found. Evolutionary trends in parthenogenetic earthworms revealed a reduction in the reproductive organs. To clarify the phylogenetic relationships of parthenogenetic earthworms with different degree of degraded reproductive organs, we conducted a morphological analysis of the reproductive organs and molecular phylogenetic analyses of Amynthas vittatus which usually degraded a part of reproductive organs. Morphological analysis revealed that almost all individuals collected around Mt. Aobayama, Sendai city of northeastern Japan, possessed male pores, while individuals collected from areas located across Hirose River did not. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial DNA sequences of 48 individuals representing 20 populations indicated that almost all individuals collected around Mt. Aobayama belonged to a different lineage from the other populations collected around Sendai, and that almost all individuals collected from across Japan belonged to the latter lineage. We suggest that the difference in the male pore possession rate was caused by histories of each population, but the A. vittatus population found on Mt. Aobayama belongs to a different lineage as compared to the other Japanese populations and not the primitive population. Thus, the parthenogenetic earthworm A. vittatus has undergone at least two morphological evolutionary processes.
