1. Information Sources Used by Tourists: Resources Consulted by American, German, and Japanese Visitors to Taiwan

Abstract

The Taiwan travel information resources used by American, German, and Japanese tourists in 2006 are identified and analyzed in this study. Differences among demographic groups regarding types of information accessed, spending behaviors, and levels of satisfaction with available travel resources were examined. The study was based on analysis of quantitative data obtained through a survey administered by the Taiwanese Tourism Bureau regarding tourist trip planning factors. Results of this study showed that Japanese used newspaper and magazine (printed materials) information sources more than did Germans; the Americans and Germans used internet information sources more than did the Japanese. This study examined how cultural patterns of communication behaviors appeared to influence travelers' choices of tourist information resources. The study results showed that different cultural groups from different nations prefer selected travel information resources. Tourism leaders interested in appealing to differential traveler markets need to be culturally sensitive to what may be previously held attitudes about the utility of information resources, as well as previously held attitudes toward a travel destination such as Taiwan. Also, people of different age groups and educational levels differ in their use of information resources, with younger and more educated groups seeking travel information resources most. Travelers' prior knowledge and experiences also influenced their use of information sources and types of itinerary plans. Frequent travelers to Taiwan (up to six times frequency) were likely not to use travel agents in Taiwan to plan for trips. Experienced travelers often relied on their existing prior knowledge or experiences for a routine or a repeat trip. In addition, most travelers' overall satisfaction in their tour arrangements were tolerant of spending prepaid amounts of money for travel agents, and most travelers preferred more information about environmental internationalization and convenience services. Additionally, most travelers desired information to assure their safety during their stay in Taiwan. Effective and efficient investment in tourism information resources requires systematic consideration of how cultural attitudes and preferences for information resources vary across people from different nations or culturally cohesive parts of the world. Abstract

Unique economic, social, and cultural conditions explain why Japan, as one of the leading industrialized nations, has no organization which specializes in or is concerned with development education. Contributing factors are: (1) economic success is so recent (late 1960's) that people are involved internally enjoying hard won affluence; (2) geographical isolation and homogeneous culture have prevented an international outlook; (3) with no immigrant workers, Japan, itself, has no development education problems; (4) monolingualism has insulated the country from international change; (5) no Japanese language translation exists for the term, development education; (6) the diminished social role of religion has reduced voluntary charitable organizations concerned with the poor; (7) the"vertical" nature of social relations does not cultivate respect and compassion towards others; (8) no specialized government department administers development cooperation; (9) the educational system does not foster compassionate concern for others. Phenomena that may favorably affect development education in Japan include: availability, since 1974, of booklets (list appended) describing Japan's development cooperation; overseas 16-30 day teacher education trips that will influence potential development education leaders; mass media efforts exposing problems of developing nations; and organizations (list appended) now engaged in international education that could encompass development education activites. 5. The relationship between lifestyle, social characteristics and obesity in 3-year-old Japanese children.

Abstract

Summary It has been observed that obese children receive genetic and environmental effects that are associated with them being overweight. With regard to the latter, lifestyles such as eating habits and physical activity have been focused on. In the present study, the social characteristics which would dominate their lifestyles were investigated as background variables. For this purpose, 9668 Japanese children aged three years who were all born in Toyama prefecture, Japan, in 1998, served as birth cohort subjects. For the comparison between obese (Kaup index; mass in kg/(height in m)2 >=18) and nonobese (Kaup index 18) children, irregular snack intake, physical inactivity and reduced sleeping hours were chosen as statistically significant obesity-related lifestyle indicators for the children. For social characteristics, family construction (expanded family with grandparents/nonexpanded family), main caregiver (mother/other), attending a nursery school (yes/no) and mother’s employment (full-time worker/other) were chosen. These were significantly associated with the obesity-related lifestyles mentioned above using multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for other variables of social characteristics as well as for gender and birth month (July–December/January–June). The two greatest population-attributable risk percentages were observed for mother as main caregiver (-36.5%) and attending a nursery school (-28.9%) for irregular snack intake. Therefore, these two social characteristics substantially reduced the number of children with irregular snack intake. On the other hand, the two social characteristics were reversed in children with reduced sleeping hours (population-attributable risk percentage of mother as main caregiver: 15.4%; attending a nursery school: 17%). In contrast with favourable effects on snack intake these social characteristics showed an adverse influence on the sleeping habits of children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
