A variety of submesoscale coherent vortices (SCVs) in the Kuroshio Extension region have been reported by recent observational studies, and the preliminary understanding of their properties, spatial distribution, and possible origins has progressively improved. However, due to relatively sparse in situ observations, the generation mechanisms of these SCVs and associated dynamic processes remain unclear. In this study, we use high-resolution model simulations to fill the gaps of the in situ observations in terms of the three-dimensional structures and life cycles of SCVs. Vortex detection and tracking algorithms are adopted and the characteristics of warm-core and cold-core SCVs are revealed. These vortices have finite Rossby numbers (0.25–0.4), and their horizontal structures can be well described by the Taylor vortex model in terms of the gradient wind balance. The vertical velocity field is characterized by a distinct dipole pattern with upwelling and downwelling cells at the vortex edge. It is very likely that both types of SCVs are generated along the eastern Japan coast through flow–topography interactions, and the Izu–Ogasawara Ridge and Hokkaido slope are found to be two important generation sites where topography friction produces extremely low potential vorticity. The Soya 'Warm Current' (SWC) flows through a shallow strait between the Japan Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk. The SWC has a jet structure downstream of the strait along the northern coast of Hokkaido with a maximum speed exceeding 1 m s−1 at its axis in summer and fall. A surface cold belt with a subsurface doming structure forms offshore of the SWC axis. Mechanisms of the cold belt formation are discussed from a point of view of resonant interaction between a barotropic stratified flow and a shallow sill and subsequent baroclinic adjustment along the SWC. When a stratified current rides a slope upstream, the thermocline displaces upward greatly and outcrops owing to resonant generation of internal Kelvin waves if the upper layer is thinner than the lower layer. The control section, where a Froude number is unity, occurs 'upstream' from the sill crest when the ambient inflow has a barotropic flow component. These upwelling features closely resemble those along the southwestern coast of Sakhalin Island. The SWC then flips from an upwelling-type to a downwelling-type structure; in doing so, it transits from the west coast of Sakhalin to the east coast of Hokkaido. Using an inflow-outflow numerical model, the authors demonstrate that the existence of Koshu Seamount, located about 200 km to the south of Cape Shiono-misaki, is essential in creating the large meander (LM) of the Kuroshio. When Koshu Seamount is completely smoothed out, the meander trough propagates away without being amplified to form the LM. In contrast, nearly the same LM as in the case with full topography is formed when the foot of Koshu Seamount remains without being smoothed out and also when the foot of Koshu Seamount is filled in so that the upper part of Koshu Seamount remains. A linear stability analysis applied to the model output shows that the Kuroshio becomes baroclinically most unstable when the water depth decreases offshoreward. The authors therefore conclude that the enhancement of baroclinic instability over the northern slope of Koshu Seamount is a prerequisite to the formation of the LM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the distribution of the sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) with the aim of quantifying the characteristics of mesoscale eddies in the Kuroshio–Oyashio extension region (KOER), where intense mesoscale eddies are commonly observed during hydrographic surveys. Dense distributions of both anticyclonic eddies (AEs) and cyclonic eddies (CEs) are detected for the first time in KOER with sufficient temporal and spatial coverage, using the Okubo–Weiss parameter without smoothing. Their contribution to the total SSHA variance is estimated to be about 50%. The zones of highest amplitudes are located north and south of the axis of the Kuroshio Extension (KE) for AEs and CEs, which represent warm-core and cold-core rings, respectively; the areas extend poleward along the Japan and Kuril–Kamchatka Trenches, especially for AEs. Eddies of both polarities and with moderate amplitudes are also recognized along the Subarctic Front (SAF). Eddies in areas north and south of the KE generally propagate westward, at a mean rate of 1–5 cm s−1; those along the trenches south of 46°N and along the SAF propagate poleward at mean rates of 1–2 and 0.5–1 cm s−1, respectively. Because of the asymmetric distribution of the AEs and CEs in the areas north and south of the KE, and the asymmetric amplitude of them along the Japan and Kuril–Kamchatka Trenches, there exist significant eddy fluxes of vorticity, heat, and salinity in these areas.
