Background: A novel avian influenza A (H7N9) virus has caused great morbidity as well as mortality since its emergence in Eastern China in February 2013. However, the possible risk factors for death are not yet fully known. Methods and Findings: Patients with H7N9 virus infection between March 1 and August 14, 2013 in Jiangsu province were enrolled. Data were collected with a standard form. Mean or percentage was used to describe the features, and Fisher's exact test or t-test test was used to compare the differences between fatal and nonfatal cases with H7N9 virus infection. A total of 28 patients with H7N9 virus infection were identified among whom, nine (32.1%) died. The median age of fatal cases was significant higher than nonfatal cases (P<0.05). Patients with older age were more strongly associated with increased odds of death (OR = 30.0; 95% CI, 2.85–315.62). Co-morbidity with chronic lung disease and hypertension were risk factors for mortality (OR = 14.40; 95% CI, 1.30–159.52, OR = 6.67; 95% CI, 1.09–40.43, respectively). Moreover, the presence of either bilateral lung inflammation or pulmonary consolidation on chest imaging on admission was related with fatal outcome (OR = 7.00; 95%CI, 1.10–44.61). Finally, dynamic monitoring showed that lymphopenia was more significant in fatal group than in nonfatal group from day 11 to week five (P<0.05). The decrease in oxygenation indexes were observed in most cases and more significantly in fatal cases after week three (P<0.05), and the value of nearly all fatal cases were below 200 mmHg during our evaluation period. Conclusions: Among cases with H7N9 virus infection, increased age accompanied by co-morbidities was the risk of death. The severity of lung infection at admission, the persistence of lymphocytopenia, and the extended duration of lower oxygenation index all contributed to worsened outcomes of patients with H7N9 virus infection. Abstract: Between 2006 and 2008, 120 isolates of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum from the Jiangsu Province of China were characterized for the baseline sensitivity to boscalid, a new active ingredient that interferes with succinate ubiquinone reductase in the electron transport chain of fungi. The isolates collected between 2006 and 2008 all showed similar sensitivity to boscalid. Baseline sensitivities were distributed as unimodal curves with mean EC50 values of 0.17±0.09μg ml−1 for inhibition of mycelial growth. Inhibition of mycelial growth of isolates whether they had resistance to carbendazim or, dimethachlon or dual resistance to both carbendazim and dimethachlon was similar, suggesting that there was no cross-resistance between boscalid and MBC/dimethachlon already in commercial use. In field trials, the treatments boscalid (50% WG), at 125, 187.5 and 250g ai ha−1 provided higher control efficacies of 65.2, 69.0 and 75.1%, respectively, than the treatments carbendazim (50% WP), at 750g ai ha−1 and dimethachlon (46% WP), at 690g ai ha−1 with control efficacies of 18.9 and 44.6%, respectively. • HFMD cases with more severe CNS complications are linked to neurological sequelae. • Cognitive dysfunction is aggravated in HFMD cases with more severe CNS complications. • The risks of sequelae and cognitive deficits are similar among different pathogens. • HFMD cases without/with mild CNS involvement did not present with any sequelae. • Cognitive function was also associated with socioeconomic factors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term sequelae and cognitive profiles resulting from severe hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) with central nervous system (CNS) involvement. 294 HFMD cases were included in a retrospective follow-up study. Physical examinations were conducted. The Chinese Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) was used to assess intelligence. 58 mild HFMD cases and 99 severe HFMD cases with mild CNS involvement did not present any neurological sequelae. In comparison, the sequelae incidence for severe HFMD with more severe CNS complications was 50.0%. The proportion of full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) impairment was 45.0%. In the 2:6–3:11 age group, severe HFMD with more severe CNS complications and lower maternal education level were risk factors for verbal comprehension disorder. Urban–rural residence and lower paternal education level were risk factors for FSIQ disorder. Furthermore, in the 4:0–6:11 age group, severe HFMD with more severe CNS complication was a risk factor for visual spatial disorder and fluid reasoning disorder. Lower paternal education level was a risk factor for FSIQ disorder. Early assessment and intervention among severe HFMD patients with more severe CNS involvement at a very young age will prove beneficial for their future performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyprodinil belongs to the chemical class of anilinopyrimidines fungicides. In this study, baseline sensitivity of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary to cyprodinil was determined using 100 strains collected from the fields in Jiangsu Province of China. The EC 50 (50% effective concentration) values ranged from 0.0636–0.8163 μg/ml with a mean value of 0.1869 (±0.1118) ug/ml for mycelial growth. Nine cyprodinil-resistant mutants (Range of resistance factor: 20.22–271.59) were obtained from sensitive strains exposed on PDA medium amended with cyprodinil and the resistance was stable after their ten transfers on PDA without the fungicide or stored at 4 °C for two months. There was positive cross-resistance between cyprodinil and pyrimethanil but not to fludioxonil, dimetachlone, procymidone, carbendazim and boscalid in S. sclerotiorum . Compared with the parental strains, all of the nine cyprodinil-resistant mutants decreased in sclerotial production. The dry weight of mycelia, pathogenicity and cell membrane permeability of most resistant mutants decreased. The mycelial growth, oxalic acid content, and the response to various stress for resistant mutants were almost the same as the sensitive parental strains. Sequencing alignment results showed that there was no alteration of amino acid in cystathionine γ-synthase (MetB) and cystathionine β-lyase (MetC) between cyprodinil-resistant mutants and their sensitive parental strains, which indicated that MetB or MetC was not the molecular target of cyprodinil in S. sclerotiorum . The addition of amino acids L-methionine, L-cystine or L-cysteine decreased the inhibition of cyprodinil against mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum , which indicated that cyprodinil could not only inhibited methionine biosynthesis but also suppressed cystine and cysteine biosynthesis. These results will contribute to evaluating the resistance risk of cyprodinil for management of the plant diseases of Sclerotinia stem rot caused by S. sclerotiorum and further increase our understanding about the mode of action of cyprodinil. One hundred and eight isolates of Botrytis cinerea from greenhouse cucumber and tomato in two locations in Jiangsu Province (Nanjing and Huaiyin) and one location in Shandong Province were tested for their sensitivities to the four fungicides commonly used in China. Isolates with resistance to all four fungicides-carbendazim, diethofencarb, procymidone, and pyrimethanil (CarRDieRPrcRPyrR)-were found in all three regions in this study. High frequencies (52 and 53%) of resistance to all four fungicides were observed among the 62 isolates collected in Nanjing and the 36 isolates collected in Huaiyin in Jiangsu Province. The 10 isolates from Shandong Province were all resistant to the four fungicides. Pathogenicity and sporulation in vivo, and mycelial growth, sporulation, spore germination, and osmotic sensitivity to NaCI in vitro, were similar for the group of quadruple-resistant and wild-type isolates (P > 0.05). In the present study, the complete two-component histidine kinase gene (Bosi) was sequenced for 10 procymidone-resistant and 3 procymidone-sensitive B. cinerea isolates. Isolates representing four different procymidone-resistant phenotypes (CarRDieRPrcRPyrR, CarRDieRPrcRPyrR, CarRDieRPrcRPyrR, and CarRDieRPrcRPyrR) all had nucleic acid point mutations resulting in amino acid changes at position 369 (change from glutamine to proline) as well as at amino acid position 373 (asparagine to serine) in the Bosi gene. Sclerotinia stem rot, caused by Scierotinia scierotiorurn, is the main fungal disease of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) in China. Numerous fungicide applications are required for control. Dimethachlon, one of the dicarboximide fungicides, has been the major fungicide for disease control after benzimidazole resistance became widespread. Fungal populations were collected throughout Jiangsu Province between 2006 and 2007 in order to determine their sensitivity to dimethachlon. A total of 1,066 single-sclerotium isolates of S. scierotiorum were collected, and most of the isolates were considered sensitive to dimethachlon. Five isolates collected in Yancheng and Changzhou showed normal growth at 5 μg/ml dimethachlon with the resistance factor ≈10 (resistance factor was estimated as ratios between the EC[sub50] values of resistant isolates and the average EC[sub50] values of sensitive ones) compared to the sensitive isolates (EC[sub50] is the concentration of fungicide causing 50% reduction in growth). Through in vitro selection for resistance to the fungicide, 25 dimethachlon-resistant mutants were derived from 10 wild-type isolates of S. scierotiorum. The resistance factors for the isolates ranged from 198 to 484, and the isolates were considered highly resistant to dimethachlon. Therefore, at least two different mechanisms of resistance seem to be involved: one that may provide a moderate resistance (insensitivity) and a second that may give a high resistance level under laboratory conditions. There was positive cross-resistance between dimethachlon and other dicarboximide fungicides, such as iprodione and procymidone, in these S. scierotiorum isolates. The field dimethachlon-insensitive and the laboratory-induced dimethachlon-resistant isolates appeared to have mycelial growth, sclerotial production, and pathogenicity comparable to their wild-type parental isolates. Also, results of osmotic tests showed that there were no significant difference in mycelial radial growth between the field dimethachlon-sensitive and field dimethachlon-insensitive isolates on potato dextrose agar plates amended with 2, 4, 6, or 8% (wt/vol) NaCI, but the laboratory-induced dimethachlon-resistant isolates grew signiticantly more slowly than their wild-type sensitive parents under all concentrations of NaCI. Because these studies yielded a high frequency of laboratory resistance in S. sclerotiorum, together with the occurrence of field insensitivity, appropriate precautions against resistance development in natural populations should be taken.
