Introduction: Stathmin, one of the most important intracellular phosphoprotein that plays the vital role in the regulation of cell cycle and cell proliferation. It acts by disassembly of Microtubules (MT) that helps in the formation of mitotic spindle. It is overexpressed in various human cancers. Aim: To investigate the expression status of stathmin and its relation with clinicopathologic significance in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) and its association with age, sex, tobacco chewing, histomorphological features and pathological staging. Materials and Methods: A descriptive and observational study in cross-sectional design was conducted in a tertiary care centre of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, from January 2020 to March 2020 in the Department of Pathology of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in collaboration with Department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology of the same institute. Stathmin expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in 28 OSCC cases. The association between stathmin expression and clinicopathological parameters like age, sex, tobacco chewing, tumour site, histomorphological type, Tumor Nodes Metastases (TNM) stage and Worst Pattern Of Invasion (WPOI) were evaluated on the basis of Chi-square test and Fisher's-exact test (software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) V 25.0). Results: Stathmin was overexpressed in 18 cases out of 28 cases of OSCC. In this study a positive association was observed between stathmin expression and age group, history of tobacco chewing, advanced T stage, advanced pTNM staging and WPOI of OSCC. Conclusion: The study suggests that overexpression of stathmin could contribute to cancer progression. There is a higher likelihood that stathmin may be used as a potential biomarker as well as therapeutic target for OSCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several experiments were undertaken at Kolkata (latitude: 22°34′N, longitude: 88°30′E) on the solar eclipse day of August 1, 2008 to observe the effects of the solar eclipse on Fair Weather Field (FWF) and VLF amplitude and phase. The experimental results presented here show significant deviations of the observed parameters from their normal values, as they are determined by the average of the records obtained on 5 days adjacent to the day of the solar eclipse. The paper deals with the analyses of the atmospheric vertical potential gradient (PG) from the ground for 90 fair weather days during 2006–2009 measured at Kolkata (Lat: 22.56°N). The variations of PG have been studied extensively to investigate their values during monsoon and winter seasons. Higher values of PG at Kolkata are observed due to higher abundance of pollutant particles. The observed PG are compared with the results of Potsdam station (Lat: 52°N) and Johannesburg station (Lat: 26°S), with 9 years data and 2 years data respectively. The correlations studies are carried out among PG, PDC (Point Discharge Current) as well as negative and positive carrier conductivities. The effect of solar eclipse of July 22, 2009, obscuring up to 91 %, upon the value of point discharge current (PDC) has been reported in this paper. The observation had been taken from Kolkata (Lat. 22.56°N, Long. 88.5°E). During the eclipse period, significant variations in the magnitude of PDC were observed than their average value for the same period in other days. The average value of the PDC for the successive ±10 days adjacent to the solar eclipse day was about 2.253 A.U. (Arbitrary Unit), while the minimum value showed about 2.242 A.U. at the time of greatest phase at 06:26.4 IST (Indian Standard Time). The effects of 2009 Leonid Meteor Shower upon the two VLF subionospheric transmitted signals and vertical electric potential gradient from the ground surface have been studied from Kolkata (Lat: 22.56°N, Long: 88.5°E) on November 17, 2009. The received signals showed their peak values when ZHR (Zenithal Hourly Rate) was highest. Abstract: The variation of the first Schumann resonance (SR) frequency spectra observed from the recorded data over Kolkata (22.56°N, 88.5°E) during a solar proton event (SPE) on July 14, 2000 has been presented. It shows increase in frequency during X-ray bursts and decrease during the period of occurrence of an SPE. The results from some other locations for the same event are also reported. The severe X-ray bursts recorded just before the proton event exhibit enhancement in frequency of the first mode due to enhancement of ionization in the D-region of the ionosphere. Some attempts are made to explain the observed variation during solar proton events in terms of the perturbations within the Earth–ionosphere waveguide on the basis of two-layer-model.
