The following day we reached the Jebel Country and the road twisted between mountains that were constructed by nature of piled boulders... For the first time we saw the villages of the Nubas. They hung so high and were so much a part of the terrain that it seemed the little pot-bellied huts, with their thatched roofs, had been taken by the handful and hurled against the mountains to settle in the crevices between the rocks where the wind and the weather and the passage of time had merged them into one with the jebels themselves (George Rodger 2001:21).
