This paper revisits the long-run determinants of house prices, and analyzes the house price dynamics using Korean data taking into account the close relationship between house prices and household debt. The results of cointegrating regression indicate that the major portion of the rise in house prices in Korea over the last 15 years can be explained by changes in macro variables such as household income, the demographic structure, the user cost of home ownership and the housing stock supply. The results also confirm that house prices are, indeed, closely linked to the steep increase in household debt seen over this period. Estimation of an error correction model shows that the extent of convergence of actual house prices to their long-run equilibrium path has weakened somewhat since the global financial crisis while the speed of convergence has slowed, indicating structural changes in the Korean housing market. Finally, a forecast for house prices over the next several years suggests that they are unlikely to rise as sharply as they did in the 2000s, given the likely changes in the macro-financial environment, and that their future path will be closely associated with that of the household debt-to-income ratio. Breast cancer frequently spreads to bone. The interaction between bone metastases and microenvironment, referred as the 'vicious cycle', increases both tumor burden and bone destruction. Therefore, inhibition at any point in this 'vicious cycle' can reduce malignant osteolytic lesions in patients with advanced breast cancer. In this study, we evaluated whether tetrahydrofurofuran-type lignans derived from Magnoliae Flos, commonly used in traditional Asian medicine to treat inflammatory diseases, could block breast cancer-mediated bone loss. Aschatin, fargesin, lirioresinol B dimethyl ether, and magnolin at noncytotoxic concentrations suppressed mRNA expression and secretion of osteolytic factor PTHrP in MDA-MB-231 metastatic human breast cancer cells. Fargesin inhibited TGF-β-stimulated cell viability, migration, and invasion and decreased TGF-β-induced PTHrP production in MDA-MB-231 cells. In addition, these lignans reduced RANKL/OPG ratio in PTHrP-treated hFOB1.19 human osteoblastic cells and inhibited RANKL-mediated osteoclast differentiation in mouse bone marrow macrophages. Aschatin, fargesin, lirioresinol B dimethyl ether, and magnolin substantially reduced bone-resorbing activity of osteoclasts by inhibiting MMP-9 and cathepsin K activities. Furthermore, orally administered fargesin inhibited tumor growth and cancer-mediated bone destruction in mice with MDA-MB-231 cells injected into calvarial tissues. Aschatin, fargesin, lirioresinol B dimethyl ether, and magnolin blocked initiation and progression of the 'vicious cycle' between breast cancer metastases and bone microenvironment by inhibiting PTHrP production in breast cancer cells and osteoclastic bone resorption. Therefore, these tetrahydrofurofuran-type lignans have the potential to serve as beneficial agents to prevent and treat cancer-induced bone destruction in breast cancer patients. This research investigates, reports, and theorizes Yuhan-Kimberly's journey to establish its organizational lifelong learning program in Korea. Based on a four-year longitudinal study and the principles of grounded theory, we propose the notion of anticipative affordance to elaborate the process through which benefits derived from an organization's lifelong learning are created, interconnected, and amplified through the gradual and long-term building and accumulation of shared understanding and commitment. Main theoretical contributions derived from this study are threefold. First, the concept of anticipative affordance enhances our understanding about the key process and challenges related to organizational lifelong learning. Second, anticipative affordance serves as a bridge to synthesize the separation between the cognitive and situated aspects of learning. Third, our research empirically illustrates how collective benefits of organizational learning are actualized over time through the development of learning mechanisms and through the integration of its individual members' learning. Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were analyzed in freshwater fish (crucian carp) taken from 16 locations in nine rivers and a wetland in Korea, during 2000–2004. Dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) were also analyzed in the same samples but over shorter period (2002–2004). Concentrations on a wet weight basis for 3 years (2002–2004) ranged from below the detection limit (DL) to 0.36pg TEQg−1 wet wt. for PCDDs, below the DL to 2.0 for PCDFs, and from 0.02 to 1.9 for DL-PCBs, with a mean of 0.07, 0.33 and 0.83pg TEQg−1 wet wt., respectively. The proportions of PCDDs, PCDFs and DL-PCBs in the total dioxin TEQ for 2002–2004 were 7%, 26% and 67%, respectively. While the temporal trend showed a significant decrease in PCDDs/DFs concentrations over the 5-year study period, DL-PCBs did not show significant change in concentration over the 3-year period. The results suggest that DL-PCBs concentrations should be determined when total dioxin TEQ is analyzed in freshwater fish. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A common and important problem in patients with chronic hepatitis B is the progression of liver fibrosis. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role in the progression of liver fibrosis. Our aim of this study was to examine the association of MMP-3 polymorphism with liver cirrhosis in Korean patients with chronic hepatitis B. Genomic DNA was extracted from 127 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), 92 patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related liver cirrhosis (HBV-LC), and 146 healthy subjects. MMP-3 polymorphism was determined by polymerase-chain reaction-based assays, and the association with the progression of liver cirrhosis was investigated. With regard to MMP-3 polymorphism, there was no statistical difference in genotype distributions among the three groups. However, the peripheral platelet count of the 5A carriers was significantly lower than that of the 6A homozygotes in the HBV-LV group (85.0 +/- 36.9 vs. 109.8 +/- 47.0 x 10(9)/l; P = 0.02). With MMP-3 promoter polymorphism (rs3025058), a lower peripheral blood platelet count, which was related to advanced liver cirrhosis, was observed in 5A carriers. Therefore, more studies of MMP-3 gene polymorphism with larger populations should be conducted to further understand its role in the progression of liver cirrhosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on the first Asia-Pacific CHRIE (APac-CHRIE) Conference and annual meeting that was held on May 21-23, 2003 in Seoul, Korea. The conference was hosted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in collaboration with Yonsei University, Korea and organized by the Institute of Convention and Exhibition Management of Hallym University, Korea. The conference officially started with an inaugural plenary session at the Lotte Hotel in the afternoon of May 21, 2003. Dr. Kyung-Sang Kwon, Director General of Bureau of Tourism, South Korea; Professor Hai-Sik Sohn, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Tourism Association; Dr. Evangelos Christou, President of Euro-CHRIE; and Prof. Kaye Chon, President of APac-CHRIE each welcomed the delegates and stressed the goals of the APac-CHRIE conference. A 30-minute poster session began with various topics subsequent to the inaugural plenary session. Shortly after the poster presentations, the first concurrent paper sessions were held featuring four unique topics: emerging issues in hospitality education, emerging research in foodservice management, conventions and events tourism, and lodging management.

Abstract: Bayesian Inference (BI) and Neighbor Joining (NJ) analyses of the phylogenetic relationships between the nucleotide sequences of the N gene of Akabane virus revealed an unclear topology among genogroups I–III, which was probably caused by genetic reassortment or recombination between these genogroups. In contrast, nucleotide and amino acid phylogenetic tree analyses of the M RNA segment agreed with the topologies obtained by using the BI and NJ methods. Therefore, distinct genogrouping of Akabane virus isolates should be performed using the M RNA segment. Four Korea isolates were classified into genogroup II together with Akabane virus strains isolated from all areas of Japan, including Okinawa Island. However, more nationwide isolates and more clinical data from Korean cattle farms will be required in the future to confirm the precise relationships between genotypes and pathogenicity. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants synthesize nutrients, pigments, and bioactive compounds that benefit nutrition and human health. The nature and concentrations of these compounds are strongly influenced by varietal factors such as size and color as well as by processing. To better understand how these factors affect the concentration of nutrients and bioactive compounds, we analyzed 11 Korean tomato varieties grown under the same greenhouse conditions and 13 processed commercial tomato products for free amino acids and amino acid metabolites by HPLC, for individual phenolics by HPLC-MS, for total phenolics by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, for antioxidative activity by the FRAP and DPPH methods, and for cancer cell-inhibiting effects by the MTT assay. We also determined the protein content of the tomatoes by an automated Kjeldahl method. The results show that there is a broad range of bioactive compounds across tomato varieties and products. Small tomatoes had higher contents of bioactive compounds than the large ones. The content of phenolic compounds of processed products was lower than that of fresh tomatoes. Tomato extracts promoted growth in normal liver (Chang) cells, had little effect in normal lung (Hel299) cells, mildly inhibited growth of lung cancer (A549) cells, and first promoted and then, at higher concentrations, inhibited growth in lymphoma (U937) cells. The relationship of cell growth to measured constituents was not apparent. Dietary and health aspects of the results are discussed.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for prolonged carriage of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREF) in intensive care units (ICUs)., Methods: A retrospective case-control study was performed in the ICUs of a university hospital in Korea from September 2006 to July 2009. VREF carriage was identified through weekly active surveillance rectal cultures. Clinical characteristics and the risk factors for VREF acquisition were compared between cases with prolonged VREF carriage (≥ 5 weeks, n = 58) and controls with shorter VREF carriage (<3 weeks, n = 36) in a multivariate logistic regression model. The effect of vancomycin consumption on vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) colonization pressure was investigated using time-series analysis with an autoregressive error model., Results: Out of a total of 6327 rectal swab cultures examined, 1915 (30.3%) specimens from 266 patients were positive for VREF. The weekly VRE colonization pressure ranged from 0.77% to 42.42%. Vancomycin use after VREF acquisition significantly increased VREF carriage (adjusted odds ratio = 4.09; 95% confidence interval = 1.32-12.65). The case group had higher in-hospital mortality than the control group [21 (36.2%) versus 4 (11.1%), P = 0.007]. Increment of VRE colonization pressure was significantly associated with vancomycin consumption of 1week before (i.e. time t - 1) (P = 0.0028) and moderately associated with that of the corresponding week (i.e. time t) (P = 0.0595)., Conclusions: Vancomycin use in patients with VREF colonization might prolong the duration of carriage. Restriction of vancomycin use should be strengthened in these patients through infection control measures.

This study examined the prevalence and genetic diversity of the bovine group C rotaviruses (GCRVs) in a total of 127 diarrhea fecal samples of calves from 52 Korean native beef calf herds using RT-PCR and nested PCR. Overall, seven of the 127 fecal samples (5.5%) from seven of the 52 herds (13.5%) tested positive for bovine GCRVs only by nested PCR. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of a partial VP6 gene showed that Korean bovine GCRVs had marked genetic diversity; two Korean strains belonged to the bovine lineage, whereas five Korean strains belonged to the porcine lineage. These results suggest that the genetically diverse bovine GCRVs cause sporadic infections in diarrheic calves in South Korea.

Fas and Fas ligand (FasL) polymorphisms in the promoter regions influence transcriptional activities. The interaction of these two genes plays a crucial role in apoptotic cell death regulation. They have been associated with esophageal, lung, uterine cervical, and urinary bladder cancers in human. We performed a case-control study to investigate the association between Fas and FasL polymorphisms and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) risk. Fas−1377G>A (rs2234767), −670T>C (rs1800682), and FasL−844T>C (rs763110) polymorphisms in 592 AML patients and 858 healthy controls were genotyped and tested for associations between polymorphisms and AML risk. There were no significant differences in genotypic and haplotypic distributions and gene-gene interaction between patients and controls in the overall analysis (p>0.05). These results suggested that polymorphisms of Fas and FasL genes were not associated with AML risk in the Korean population.

Porcine group A rotavirus (GARV) is considered to be an important animal pathogen due to their economic impact in the swine industry and its potential to cause heterologous infections in humans. This study examined 475 fecal samples from 143 farms located in 6 provinces across South Korea. RT-PCR and nested PCR utilizing primer pairs specific for the GARV VP6 gene detected GARV-positive reactions in 182 (38.3%) diarrheic fecal samples. A total of 98 porcine GARV strains isolated from the GARV-positive feces were analyzed for G and P genotyping. Based on the sequence and phylogenetic analyses, the most predominant combination of G and P genotypes was G5P[7], found in 63 GARV strains (64.3%). The other combinations of G and P genotypes were G8P[7] (16 strains [16.3%]), G9P[7] (7 strains [7.1%]), G9P[23] (2 strains [2.0%]), and G8P[1] (1 strain [1.0%]). The counterparts of G or P genotypes were not determined in three G5, five P[7], and one P[1] strains. Interestingly, phylogenetic analysis indicated that all Korean G9 strains were more closely related to lineage VI porcine and human viruses than to other lineages (I-V) of GARVs and to Korean human G9 strains (lineage III). These results show that porcine GARV infections are common in diarrheic piglets in South Korea. This study examined the prevalence and genetic diversity of the porcine torovirus (PToV) in Korea. Of 295 samples, 19 (6.4%) samples tested positive for PToVs by RT-PCR. A low nucleotide sequence identity of the partial S gene was detected among the Korean PToVs (73.5%) and between the Korean and European PToVs (74.0%). Phylogenetic analysis of the spike and nucleocapsid genes showed that the Korean PToVs form distinct branches with clusters corresponding to the farm of origin, which were separate from the other known foreign PToVs. These findings suggest that genetically diverse Korean PToV strains cause sporadic infections in Korea.

Three out of 109 mixed lung and tracheal tissue extracts originating from Korean dogs tested positive for infection with canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV) of Coronaviridae group 2. The three CRCoV-positive samples were found to be competent for viral propagation and isolation, using human rectal tumor cells (HRT-18), and the structure and nonstructure proteins encoded in the 3'-end of the CRCoV genome were sequenced. The small open reading frames situated between the spike and envelope genes of the three Korean CRCoV isolates were found to encode three nonstructural proteins (4.9 kDa, 2.7 kDa, and 12.8 kDa in size), as were the British (CRCoV G9142) and Italian (CRCoV 240-05) strains. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences of the spike protein in the CRCoV and bovine coronavirus (BCoV) strains revealed twenty sequence variations. The predicted spike protein of CRCoV contained 20 or 21 N-glycosylation sites, whereas that of BCoV contained 19 sites. Phylogenetic analysis of the spike gene from eight CRCoV and six BCoV strains, performed using the neighbor-joining approach, allowed us to classify into two clades (CRCoV and BCoV) and three Korean strains (CRCoV-K9, -K37, and -K39) related to the Japanese strain 06/075., (Copyright 2009. Serum samples from 3315 pigs from 363 farms located throughout all nine Korean provinces were tested for the presence of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) antibodies using the virus neutralization test. The seroprevalence of EMCV in the total pig population was 9.1%, whereas in the herd the prevalence was 43.5%. The first two EMCVs isolated were K3 and K11; these strains were isolated in 1990 from a mummy and a stillborn fetus, respectively, suspected of having EMCV. Phylogenetic analyses of the capsid coding region and the VP3/VP1 genes using the Bayesian approach, and a neighbor-joining analysis, revealed that the EMCV strains fell into two clusters: groups 1 and 2, with two sub-clusters within group 1, group 1a and 1b. The Korean isolates belonged to the group 1a cluster, along with strains BJC3 (China), B424/90 (Greece) and BEL-2887A/91 (Belgium), whereas five strains isolated from Sus scrofa in Belgium (B279/95, B440/95), Italy (I001/96, I136/86), and Cyprus (C108/95) belonged to the group 2 cluster.

A Bayesian approach was utilized to further investigate the molecular phylogeny of canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) with emphasis on Korean isolates, and the complete VP2 gene sequences for 23 Korean isolates in 2007 and two vaccine strains were determined. Of the 44 Korean CPVs, 40 were identified as CPV-2a, three as CPV-2b, and the remaining one as a CPV-2a variant having a Gly300Asp mutation. Compared with CPV-2a, our findings also showed the presence of six additional amino acid substitutions (Thr440Ala, Ile418Thr, Pro435Ser, Asp413Asn, Thr322Ser, and Tyr324Ile) within the VP2 gene of the Korean isolates. In the phylogenetic tree, the overall Korean CPVs did not emerge as an independent clade within the global CPVs, nor did they show a close relationship to the CPVs from any other country. Our VP2 sequence data also revealed no geographic influence on the spread of CPVs worldwide. dN/dS analysis showed that purifying selection is acting on the VP2 gene of Korean CPVs.
