The Korean government has adopted marine spatial planning as a new policy tool for integrated marine space management and has designated nine Marine Use Zones (MUZs) on all sea water areas. To designate MUZs, it is necessary to conduct a Marine Spatial Assessment (MSA) to identify the scope and level of core activities and spatial conflict potential between MUZs. This paper covers the MSA method for Jeonbuk waters and discusses the limitations and implications of the current MSA for the effective designation of the MUZs. Marine spatial planning (MSP) for Jeonbuk considers various demands for use and development, such as leisure, marine energy development, and the Saemangeum construction project, as well as the protection of excellent ecology and scenery, such as tidal flats and islands. Thus, MSA was conducted to designate MUZs that reflect these regional characteristics well according to relevant guidelines. The MSA procedure consists of preparation, data collection and processing, characteristic evaluation, and conflict analysis. Specifically, data on marine use and those pertaining to resources of the target sea were collected and transformed into grid-based (3'x3') GIS data. Based on these results, the MUZs in the target area were designated and managed. This study had several limitations and implications. First, there were difficulties in defining core activities according to the accessibility and availability of input data for MSA. Hence, methods and techniques such as data fusion and their spatial interpolation are required to overcome these limitations. Second, a future study (e.g., ecosystem services) should be conducted to quantitatively evaluate and visualize the value of benefits provided by marine ecosystems. Third, location-based AIS and fishing boat data are likely to prove useful for identifying the characteristics of dynamic activities such as fishing and shipping. Finally, it is necessary to apply simulation model to reflect not only the recent behavior pertaining to the use of marine space and resources, but also potential future behavior relating to MUZs. Amphibian populations have been decreasing in urban freshwater systems in Korea. To elucidate the biological safety of treated wastewater effluent (TWE) in the Tancheon basin, the capital area of Korea, a 7-d-exposure Bombina orientalis embryo developmental toxicity assay was examined during the breeding season. In March, there were no significant differences in embryonic survival or malformation among the water samples. In July, following monsoon precipitation, embryonic lethality in TWE was significantly higher than in the upstream water sample. Malformation in TWE and TWE-mixed waters was significantly higher than in the control and upstream water samples. Tail muscle height of tadpoles also significantly decreased in TWE and TWE-mixed waters. Heavy metals were not detected in any samples. Total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and chemical oxygen demand in TWE markedly increased together with a decrease in dissolved oxygen in July. The increase in organic and inorganic loading following precipitation could have made TWE and TWE-mixed water not suitable for embryonic development. Though being managed based on physicochemical criteria, the water quality of TWE may not be sufficient to assure normal development of amphibian embryos. Abstract: We observed the origin, behavior, and flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the subterranean estuary of a volcanic island, Jeju, Korea. The sampling of surface seawater and coastal groundwater was conducted in Hwasun Bay, Jeju, in three sampling campaigns (October 2010, January 2011, and June 2011). We observed conservative mixing of these components in this subterranean environment for a salinity range from 0 to 32. The fresh groundwater was characterized by relatively high DON, DIN, and CDOM, while the marine groundwater showed relatively high DOC. The DON and DIN fluxes through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the groundwater of Hwasun Bay were estimated to be 1.3×105 and 2.9×105 mold−1, respectively. In the seawater of Hwasun Bay, the groundwater-origin DON was almost conservative while about 91% of the groundwater-origin DIN was removed perhaps due to biological production. The DON flux from the entire Jeju was estimated to be 7.9×108 molyr−1, which is comparable to some of the world''s large rivers. Thus, our study highlights that DON flux through SGD is potentially important for delivery of organic nitrogen to further offshore while DIN is readily utilized by marine plankton in near-shore waters under N-limited conditions. Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is a nonallergic clinical syndrome characterized by a severe decline in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) following the ingestion of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin. The effects of genetic variants have not fully explained all of the observed individual differences to an aspirin challenge despite previous attempts to identify AERD-related genes. In the present study, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) and targeted association study in Korean asthmatics to identify new genetic factors associated with AERD. A total of 685 asthmatic patients without AERD and 117 subjects with AERD were used for the GWAS of the first stage, and 996 asthmatics without AERD and 142 subjects with AERD were used for a follow-up study. A total of 702 SNPs were genotyped using the GoldenGate assay with the VeraCode microbead. GWAS revealed the top-ranked variants in 3′ regions of the HLA-DPB1 gene. To investigate the detailed genetic effects of an associated region with the risk of AERD, a follow-up targeted association study with the 702 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 14 genes was performed on 802 Korean subjects. In a case-control analysis, HLA-DPB1 rs1042151 (Met105Val) shows the most significant association with the susceptibility of AERD ( p = 5.11 × 10; OR = 2.40). Moreover, rs1042151 also shows a gene dose for the percent decline of FEV1 after an aspirin challenge ( p = 2.82 × 10). Our findings show that the HLA-DPB1 gene polymorphism may be the most susceptible genetic factor for the risk of AERD in Korean asthmatics and confirm the importance of HLA-DPB1 in the genetic etiology of AERD. Abstract: The euglenophyte Eutreptiella gymnastica is a common red tide causative species. However, there have been no studies on the grazing impact of heterotrophic protists on this species. To investigate the grazing impact of heterotrophic protists on E. gymnastica, we measured daily the abundances of E. gymnastica and co-occurring potential heterotrophic protistan grazers in Masan Bay, Korea, in August 2004 when an E. gymnastica red tide occurred. In addition, we tested whether the common heterotrophic dinoflagellates Gyrodinium dominans, Oxyrrhis marina, Pfiesteria piscicida, Polykrikos kofoidii, Protoperidinium bipes, and Stoeckeria algicida and the naked ciliates Strobilidium sp. (30–40μm in cell length) and Strombidinopsis sp. (70–100μm in cell length) were able to feed on E. gymnastica. We also measured their growth and ingestion rates on E. gymnastica as a function of prey concentration. Finally, we calculated the grazing coefficients by combining field data on the abundance of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate and ciliate grazers and co-occurring E. gymnastica with laboratory data on ingestion rates obtained in this study. The maximum abundance of E. gymnastica in Masan Bay in August, 2004 was 7575cellsml−1, while those of Gyrodinium spp., P. kofoidii, P. bipes, the naked ciliates (≤50μm in cell length), and naked ciliates (>50μm in cell length) were 50, 9, 58, 32, and 3cellsml−1, respectively. The maximum growth rate of G. dominans on E. gymnastica (1.13d−1) was higher than that of O. marina (0.81d−1) or P. bipes (0.77d−1). However, E. gymnastica did not support positive growth of P. kofoidii, Strobilidium sp., and Strombidinopsis sp. (−0.04∼−2.8d−1). The maximum ingestion rates of G. dominans, P. kofoidii, P. bipes, O. marina, and Strobilidium sp. on E. gymnastica (2.1–2.7ngC predator−1 d−1) were similar, but they were much lower than that of Strombidinopsis sp. (156ngCpredator−1 d−1). The calculated grazing coefficients for P. bipes, small heterotrophic Gyrodinium spp. (25–35μm in cell length), naked ciliates (≤50μm in cell length), P. kofoidii, and naked ciliates (>50μm in cell length) on E. gymnastica were up to 0.77, 0.61, 0.22, 0.07 and 0.03d−1, respectively (i.e., up to 54%, 46%, 20%, 7%, and 3% of E. gymnastica populations were removed by the population of each of these heterotrophic protistan grazers in 1d, respectively). The results of the present study suggest that P. bipes, small heterotrophic Gyrodinium spp., and naked ciliates (≤50μm in cell length) sometimes have considerable potential grazing impact on the populations of E. gymnastica. Large-scale Sargassum blooms have been increasingly observed in coastal zones in recent years. Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Agardh blooms (pelagic) have been observed in Jeju Island (Korea) and the southwest of the Korean Peninsula, causing serious problems for seaweed and abalone farms as well as for fisheries, tourism and recreational industries. The present study explored the physiological responses of attached and pelagic S. horneri populations cultivated under different nutrient concentrations (HN: 50 μM of nitrogen and 5 μM of phosphorus; LN: 5 μM of nitrogen and 0.5 μM of phosphorus) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (H-PAR: 250; M-PAR: 150; L-PAR: 50 μmol photons m−2 s−1) for 25 days. Relative growth rates (RGR) were significantly lower in the pelagic population than that in the attached population. All thalli from the pelagic population died within 20 days. Chlorophyll a and c , and carotenoids were significantly higher at HN than at LN, and decreased as PAR increased for both populations. For the attached population, photosynthetic rate, tissue nitrogen, and carbon and nitrogen removal were also significantly higher at HN than at LN. These results suggest that high nutrient and lower PAR increased the biomass accumulation of attached populations in coastal areas. Nutrient limitation and high PAR may accelerate senescence of the pelagic populations while traveling on the sea surface from their point of origin. • Attached population of Sargassum horneri (Turner) C. Abstract: Red tides dominated by the harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides have caused annual losses of USD $5–60 million to the Korean aquaculture industry annually since 1995 and a loss of USD $3 million during a 1999 net-pen fish mortality event in Canada. In order to evaluate the potential to control C. polykrikoides red tides dominated by using mass-cultured heterotrophic protistan grazers, we monitored the abundance of Strombidinopsis jeokjo (a naked ciliate) and C. polykrikoides after mass-cultured S. jeokjo was introduced into mesocosms (ca. 60l) deployed in situ and containing natural red tide waters dominated by C. polykrikoides. Water temperature, salinity, and pH, as well as the abundance of co-occurring other protists and metazooplankton were measured concurrently. To compare the growth and ingestion rates of S. jeokjo feeding on cultured versus natural populations of C. polykrikoides, we also monitored the abundance of cultured C. polykrikoides and S. jeokjo in bottles during laboratory grazing experiments. S. jeokjo introduced into the mesocosms grew well, effectively reducing natural populations of C. polykrikoides from approximately 1000cellsml−1 to below 10cellsml−1 within 2 days. The growth and ingestion rates of cultured S. jeokjo on natural populations of C. polykrikoides in the mesocosms for the first 30h (0.72day−1 and 51ngCgrazer−1 day−1) were 84% and 44%, respectively, of those measured in the laboratory during bottle incubations with similar initial prey concentrations. The calculated grazing impact of S. jeokjo on natural populations of C. polykrikoides suggests that large-scale cultures of this ciliate could be used for controlling red tides by C. polykrikoides in small areas. To determine the driving mechanisms between submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and massive blooms of the green alga Ulva, we examined the magnitude of SGD and SGD-derived nutrient fluxes from November 2019 to July 2020 in Ihotewoo (north) and Bangdu (east) bays, Jeju Island, Korea. The variability of SGD flux at both the sites, where the hydraulic gradient is low, closely followed the daily variability of the tidal range, indicating that SGD flux is primarily driven by tidal pumping. Although the average annual SGD-driven nutrient fluxes were 24-37 % lower in Bangdu Bay than in Ihotewoo Bay, massive Ulva blooms only occurred in Bangdu Bay. Background: In European ancestry, 111 genetic loci were identified as associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). We explored the reproducibility of those single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of Far East Asian populations., Methods: We performed a meta-analysis of the Korean AF network and Japanese AF data sets (9118 cases and 33 467 controls) by an inverse-variance fixed-effects model. We compared the results with 111 previously reported SNPs proven in Europeans after excluding 36 missing loci and a locus with a minor allelic frequency (MAF) < 0.01 in the European population., Results: Among remaining 74 loci, 29 loci were replicated at a P < .05, and 17 of those loci were newly found in the Far East Asian population: 3 loci with a P < 5×10 -8 (METTL11B at 1q24, KCNN2 at 5q22 and LRMDA at 10q22), 4 loci at the threshold of the Bonferroni correction of P = 4.5 × 10 -4  ~ 5×10 -8 (KIF3C at 2p23, REEP3, NRBF2 at 10q21, SIRT1, MYPN at 10q21 and CFL2 at 14q13) and 10 SNPs with a P = .05 ~ 4.5 × 10 -4 . Among 18 AF loci with a MAF< 0.01 in the Far East Asian populations, 2 loci (GATA4 at 8q23 and SGCG at 13q12) were replicated after a fine mapping. Twenty-seven AF loci, including a locus, which had a sufficient sample size to get a power of over 80% (with a type 1 error α = 4.5 × 10 -4 ), were not replicated in the Far East Asian populations., Conclusions: We newly replicated 19 AF-associated genetic loci in the European descent among the Far East Asian populations. We investigated the feeding of the small heterotrophic dinoflagellates (HTDs) Oxyrrhis marina, Gyrodinium cf. guttula, Gyrodinium sp., Pfiesteria piscicida, and Protoperidinium bipes on marine heterotrophic bacteria. To investigate whether they are able to feed on bacteria, we observed the protoplasm of target heterotrophic dinoflagellate cells under an epifluorescence microscope and transmission electron microscope. In addition, we measured ingestion rates of the dominant heterotrophic dinoflagellate, Gyrodinium spp., on natural populations of marine bacteria (mostly heterotrophic bacteria) in Masan Bay, Korea in 2006-2007. Furthermore, we measured the ingestion rates of O. marina, G. cf. guttula, and P. piscicida on bacteria as a function of bacterial concentration under laboratory conditions. All HTDs tested were able to feed on a single bacterium. Oxyrrhis marina and Gyrodinium spp. intercepted and then ingested a single bacterial cell in feeding currents that were generated by the flagella of the predators. During the field experiments, the ingestion rates and grazing coefficients of Gyrodinium spp. on natural populations of bacteria were 14-61 bacteria/dinoflagellate/h and 0.003-0.972 day(-1), respectively. With increasing prey concentration, the ingestion rates of O. marina, G. cf. guttula, and P. piscicida on bacteria increased rapidly at prey concentrations of ca 0.7-2.2 x 10(6) cells/ml, but increased only slowly or became saturated at higher prey concentrations. The maximum ingestion rate of O. marina on bacteria was much higher than those of G. cf. guttula and P. piscicida. Bacteria alone supported the growth of O. marina. The results of the present study suggest that some HTDs may sometimes have a considerable grazing impact on populations of marine bacteria, and that bacteria may be important prey.

To explore the feeding ecology of the Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellate (PLD) Luciella masanensis (GenBank Accession no. AM050344, previously Lucy), we investigated the feeding behavior and the kinds of prey species that L. masanensis fed on and determined its growth and ingestion rates of L. masanensis when it fed on the dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae and an unidentified cryptophyte species (equivalent spherical diam., ESD=5.6 microm), which were the dominant phototrophic species when L. masanensis and similar small heterotrophic dinoflagellates were abundant in Masan Bay, Korea in 2005. Additionally, these parameters were also measured for L. masanensis fed on blood cells of the perch Lateolabrax japonicus and the raphidophyte Heterosigma akashiwo in the laboratory. Luciella masanensis fed on prey cells by using a peduncle after anchoring the prey with tow filament, and was able to feed on diverse prey such as cryptophytes, raphidophytes, diatoms, mixotrophic dinoflagellates, and the blood cells of fish and humans. Among the prey species tested in the present study, perch blood cells were observed to be the optimal prey for L. masanensis. Specific growth rates of L. masanensis feeding on perch blood cells, A. carterae, H. akashiwo, and the cryptophyte, either increased continuously or became saturated with increasing the mean prey concentration. The maximum specific growth rate of L. masanensis feeding on perch blood cells (1.46/day) was much greater than that of A. carterae (0.59/day), the cryptophyte (0.24/day), or H. akashiwo (0.20/day). The maximum ingestion rate of L. masanensis on perch blood cells (2.6 ng C/grazer/day) was also much higher than that of A. carterae (0.32 ng C/grazer/day), the cryptophyte (0.44 ng C/grazer/day), or H. akashiwo (0.16 ng C/grazer/day). The kinds of prey species which L. masanensis is able to feed on were the same as those of Pfiesteria piscicida, but very different from those of another PLD Stoeckeria algicida. However, the maximum growth and ingestion rates of L. masanensis on perch blood cells, A. carterae, H. akashiwo, and the cryptophyte were considerably lower than those of P. piscicida. Therefore, these three dinoflagellates may occupy different ecological niches in marine planktonic communities, even though they have a similar size and shape and the same feeding mechanisms.
