The article discusses the findings of a study which determined the capability of developed operational storm surge system along the Korean Peninsula. The research was conducted by the Climate Change & Coastal Disaster Research Department of the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI). The KORDI operational storm surge prediction system consists of calculations of meteorological inputs, predictions of sea surface elevation along coastal areas, and dissemination of information through the Internet. The research confirms that the KORDI system's numerical weather models are not adequate for measuring wind field for typhoons, while hindcast and forecast data indicate the effectiveness of the storm surge system for predicting storm surges along the Korean coast.
