Energy saving potential and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction potential of boiler technologies in the Korean industrial sector up to 2035 were analyzed using The Integrated MARKAL-EFOM System (TIMES) model based on bottom-up optimization. Final energy consumption by industrial indirect heating boilers in 2013 accounts for 7% of Korea's industrial energy consumption and 8% of the manufacturing sector's consumption. Energy consumption of industrial indirect heating boilers is expected to increase about 25% in the baseline scenario between 2013 and 2035. Technical potential against the baseline scenario by deploying only the most efficient technologies in new installation demand is 7.9% for energy saving and 20.7% for CO 2 reduction by 2035. The most efficient technologies by boiler technology types were gas-fired super boilers. Economic potential against the baseline scenario through market competition between existing and high efficient technologies is 5.6% for energy saving and 6.1% for CO 2 reduction by 2035. CO 2 reduction potential is higher than energy-saving potential because fuel substitution toward gas was added to the energy-saving effect due to efficiency improvement. Research and development, information disclosure, regulation, and incentives for high-efficiency boiler technologies are necessary to realize technical potential as well as economic potential in industrial indirect heating. During a Korean mushroom diversity survey from 2011 to 2014, we found one new Xylaria species (X. ripicola sp. nov.) and one Xylaria species that had not been previously observed in Korea (X. tentaculata). To confirm the phylogenetic placement of the new species, we conducted a phylogenetic investigation based on internal transcribed spacer regions of ribosomal DNA sequences. Additionally, the new species, X. ripicola, was subsequently analyzed for RNA polymerase II subunit sequences. We also evaluated the macroscopic and microscopic features of this species. Herein, X. ripicola is described as a new species that was collected from a natural beach habitat and X. tentaculata is formally reported as newly found in Korea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we propose nonconcave penalties on a reduced-rank regression model to select variables and estimate coefficients simultaneously. We apply HARD (hard thresholding) and SCAD (smoothly clipped absolute deviation) symmetric penalty functions with singularities at the origin, and bounded by a constant to reduce bias. In our simulation study and real data analysis, the new method is compared with an existing variable selection method using L1 penalty that exhibits competitive performance in prediction and variable selection. Instead of using only one type of penalty function, we use two or three penalty functions simultaneously and take advantages of various types of penalty functions together to select relevant predictors and estimation to improve the overall performance of model fitting. This study attempts to explore the role of consumer's perception of quality within the new technology adoption process which is given little attention in the field of Information systems. In this regard, the authors developed an exploratory conceptual model in the level of consumer perception by exploring the antecedent of perceived quality. Three factors are introduced as determinants of perceived quality: perceived usefulness, perceived risk and trialability. Moreover, the authors investigate cross national differences among three countries including China, Korea and Japan by estimating our proposed model. An empirical study is conducted with analysis of the adoption mechanism for a new innovative product. Data analysis results support the authors proposed hypotheses, and significant differences are found among the three countries in regards to the new technology adoption process. Technology transfer has been evaluated as a driving force of economic growth as well as one way to create new innovation. In order to make a successful technology transfer, both additional emission efforts by the supplier and absorption efforts by the recipient are required, because it is not as simple as the acquisition of a capital good. This study seeks to better understand the nature of successful technology transfer in Korea. We empirically analyzed the impact of the supplier's characteristics (cultural distance, relationship type, form of technology transfer, and licensing type) and the recipient's characteristics (absorptive capacity) on the market value of firms in Korea using the event study methodology. We found that technology transfer announcements significantly increase the market value of firms in Korea, and market responses to the recipient firms are significantly greater than those to the supplier firms. Our results showed that the effect of alliances with complementors (e.g., university, government laboratory) is greater than that of alliances with industry players, and the effect of an exclusive license as a method of technology transfer is greater than that of a non-exclusive license. However, we were not able to determine whether the impact of high levels of absorptive capacity is significantly different from that of low levels of absorptive capacity. Sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers are one of the most effective and accurate tools for microbial identification. In this study, we applied SCAR markers for the rapid and accurate detection of Phytophthora katsurae, the casual agent of chestnut ink disease in Korea. In this study, we developed seven SCAR markers specific to P katsurae using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and assessed the potential of the SCAR markers to serve as tools for identifying P katsurae. Seven primer pairs (SOPC 1F/SOPC 1R, SOPC 1-1F/SOPC 1-1R, SOPC 3F/SOPC 3R, SOPC 4F/SOPC 4R, SOPC 4F/SOPC 4-1R, SOPD 9F/SOPD 9R, and SOPD 1OF/SOPD 1OR) from a sequence derived from RAPD fragments were designed for the analysis of the SCAR markers. To evaluate the specificity and sensitivity of the SCAR markers, the genomic DNA of P katsurae was serially diluted 10-fold to final concentrations from 1 mg/mL to 1 pg/mL. The limit of detection using the SCAR markers ranged from 100 μg/mL to 100 ng/mL. To identify the limit for detecting P katsurae zoospores, each suspension of zoospores was serially diluted 10-fold to final concentrations from 10 x 105 to 10 x 101 zoospores/mL, and then extracted. The limit of detection by SCAR markers was approximately 10 x 101 zoospores/mL. PCR detection with SCAR markers was specific for P katsurae, and did not produce any P katsurae-specific PCR amplicons from 16 other Phytophthora species used as controls. Abstract: By 2020, Korea has set itself the challenging target of reducing nationwide greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, more than the BAU (Business as Usual) scenario, as the implementation goal required to achieve the new national development paradigm of green growth. To achieve such a target, it is necessary to diffuse innovative technologies with the capacity to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To that end, the ripple effect of diffusing innovative technologies on the energy and environment must be quantitatively analyzed using an energy system analysis model such as the MARKAL (Market Allocation) model. However, energy system analysis models based on an optimization methodology have certain limitations in that a technology with superior cost competitiveness dominates the whole market and non-cost factors cannot be considered. Therefore, this study proposes a new methodology for overcoming problems associated with the use of MARKAL models, by interfacing with a forecasting model based on the discrete-choice model. The new methodology was applied to green car technology to verify its usefulness and to study the ripple effects of green car technology on greenhouse gas reduction. The results of this study can be used as a reference when establishing a strategy for effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, and could be of assistance to future studies using the energy system analysis model. One of the major occupational hazards of working in military service is being subjected to intense impulse noise. We analyzed the clinical presentation of acoustic traumas, induced by mass rifle gunshot noise during military training, in unprotected patients. We evaluated 189 soldiers who had otologic symptoms after rifle shooting exercises without using any hearing protection. All soldiers had been training on the K2 rifle. We took medical histories; conducted physical examinations and hearing evaluations (pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and impedence audiometry); and distributed the Newmann's Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) survey. In addition, we evaluated a normal control group of 64 subjects of similar age who had never fired a rifle. In the patient group, the most common and irritating reported symptom was tinnitus (94.2%), and the average THI score in the patient group was 39.51 ± 14.87, which was significantly higher than the control group score (0.56 ± 3.94) (p < 0.001). Average outcomes of post-exposure air conduction thresholds were 21.33 ± 13.25 dB HL in the affected ears. These levels also were significantly higher than those of the control group (9.16 ± 4.07dB HL) (p < 0.001). Hearing loss was most prominent at high frequencies. An asymmetry of hearing loss related to head position during shooting was not observed. Acoustic trauma induced by gunshot noise can cause permanent tinnitus and hearing loss. Conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) technique has limitations in its capacity of achieving en bloc resection and, for lesions greater than 20 mm, removal in a piecemeal resection is often required. This leads to uncertainty as to whether or not the lesion has been completely removed and to an increase in local recurrence. To overcome this limitation, a new technique using specifically designed cutting devices, termed endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been developed. Abstract: This paper measures economic value of multiple environmental impacts of large dam construction as a case study of Korea, using a choice experiment approach. The choice works which consider trade-offs between price and environmental attributes for selecting a preferred option were within respondents'' ability, and the marginal willingness-to-pay estimates across the two models were statistically significant. Especially, adding covariates does not significantly change the marginal willingness-to-pay estimates for each attribute. Monthly willingness-to-pay of the typical household for mitigating environmental impacts by large dam construction from the status quo to the highest attribute level is calculated as about 2542 Korean Won (US $ 2.12) and the total willingness-to-pay for the entire population of the study area is annually about 209.9 billion Korean Won (US $ 174.9 million). This study allows us to provide policy-makers with quantitative information that can be useful in the cost–benefit analysis related to large dam construction projects. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The temporal dynamics of two seagrass species, Zostera marina and Z. japonica, were monitored monthly in Dadae Bay, Geoje Island, on the southern coast of Korea. Plant morphological characteristics, shoot density, biomass, leaf production, reproductive effort, and environmental characteristics were monitored from July 2001 to July 2002. Zostera japonica occurred in the intertidal zone and Z. marina occurred in the subtidal zone from 0.5 to 2.5 m below the mean low water level. Shoots and rhizomes were significantly larger in Z. marina than in Z. japonica, whereas the shoot density was greater in Z. japonica than in Z. marina. Despite differences in morphology and shoot density, biomass did not differ significantly between the species. Reproduction occurred from April to June in Z. marina and from May to July in Z. japonica. The proportion of reproductive shoots was approximately three times higher in Z. marina than in Z. japonica. Seasonal variation in the biomass of Z. japonica was caused by changes in both shoot size and density, whereas that of Z. marina was mainly caused by changes in shoot length. Leaf production in Z. marina and Z. japonica showed clear seasonal variation, and leaf production in Z. marina (2.6 ± 0.2 g DW·m−2·day−1) was higher than that in Z. japonica (1.7 ± 0.2 g DW·m−2·day−1). The mean plastochrone interval was not significantly different between the two species, whereas the leaf lifetime of Z. marina was longer (69 ± 7.8 days) than that of Z. japonica (59 ± 8.3 days). Our results indicated that seasonal leaf growth patterns in Z. japonica are correlated with irradiance and temperature, whereas those in Z. marina respond most to irradiance. Contents The success of AI technology is based on both semen quality and freezing process. In order to establish the semen freezing techniques in Korean native bucks, factors affecting the success were evaluated in the present study. Semen collected by electro-ejaculation from bucks during four distinct seasons was evaluated for semen volume and pH, sperm motility and survivability. The semen volume, concentration and total cell were higher in spring, summer and less in winter. Yet, there were no seasonal differences in the proportional data of live sperm, motility score and pH of semen among seasons. The percentage of live sperm after thawing was found to increase with increased concentration of lactose in Tris-Egg yolk-glycerol (TY-G), being highest in TY-G supplemented with 180 mm lactose (TYL180-G), but did not differ between TY-G and TYL120-G. Sperm motility was enhanced by employing 2.0 h equilibration time with rapid freezing method. In conclusion, semen could be frozen with high success rates for further use of AI in breeding techniques and to preserve the Korean native bucks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Methods. In a case-control study, including 331 gastric cancer cases and 433 controls, we assessed the association between the three polymorphisms and the risk of gastric cancer. All genotyping was performed in duplicate. To assess the DNA-binding activity of IL-1B-1473 in vitro, we performed an electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). Results. When cases were divided according to the histologic type of the tumor, a significant difference in genotype frequencies for IL-1B-1473 was observed only between intestinal-type cases and controls (odds ratio [OR], 1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0–3.5 and OR 2.1 and 95% CI, 1.1–4.2 in the CG and GG genotypes, respectively). In the cases, there was a deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the IL-1B-511/-31 loci confined to the intestinal type, due to the excess of heterozygotes. The IL-1B-1473G allele showed decreased binding to nuclear extract, indicating a wearker promoter activity on EMSA. Conclusions. We identified a novel single-nucleotide polymorphism, 1473C→G, in the IL-1B promoter that was significantly associated with gastric cancer among Koreans. Our results also suggest that the association between IL-1B polymorphism and an increased risk of gastric cancer may depend on the histologic type of gastric cancer. Polymorphisms in the gene for interleukin 1β (IL-1B) have been found to increase the risks of gastric cancer and its precursors in response to Helicobacter pylori infection in white populations. However, there has been no independent confirmation of the role of IL-1B markers in gastric cancer patients from Asian populations. Moreover, there have been conflicting data regarding the effect of IL-1B-511/-31 on the risk of gastric cancer or its precursors in Asian populations. A life cycle inventory analysis (LCI) database that encompasses the entire Korean electrical energy grid was developed. The CO2 emission per functional unit of electricity, 1 kWh of usable electricity, was 0.49 kg/f.u. Contribution of direct emission of CO2 to the total CO2 emission was around 95%. In the case of emissions of SOx, NOx, and PM, contribution of the upstream processes including raw energy material extraction, transport, and fuel processing to the total emissions were 29%, 26%, and 43%, respectively. Emissions of air pollutants from power generation or direct emissions are much greater in quantity than those from the upstream processes. On the other hand, the opposite is true for the emissions of water pollutants. Bituminous coal was the largest source of emissions of air and water pollutants including CO2. Natural gas was the best fuel and anthracite coal was the worst fuel with respect to the direct and upstream emissions of air and water pollutants and wastes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The morphological characteristics, primary productivity, and carbon stable isotope ratios of the shoots of Zostera marina were investigated in order to compare environmental habitat factors between Dongdae Bay and Ojiri, Korea. The Z. marina samples collected over twelve months at both sampling sites from March 2004 to February 2005 were separated into four fractions (new and adult leaves, sheath, and rhizome). When the new leaf productivity of Z. marina is maximized in the summer, δ 13 C becomes heavier. However, when the new leaf productivity of Z. marina is at its lowest, δ 13 C becomes lighter. The new leaf productivity and δ 13 C of Z. marina are closely correlated with environmental factors such as irradiance, temperature and dissolved inorganic nitrogen. However, the correlation rate between the new leaf productivity and δ 13 C values of Z. marina in each habitat varied. At Dongdae Bay, the δ 13 C value of Z. marina new leaf had a high correlation with productivity, water temperature, and DIN. In contrast, the δ 13 C value of Z. marina new leaf was affected by productivity, water temperature, and irradiance at the Ojiri site. Therefore, carbon stable isotope ratio could be used as a good indicator for relationships among environmental factors, morphological characteristics and productivity of Z. marina . Abstract: We describe seven cases of imitative suicide, unintentionally affected by mass media reporting of an accidental death by burning charcoal. After the first report on accidental death by burning charcoal, three cases occurred in 3 months in 2007, and another four cases in the same season in 2008 in the southeastern region of Korea. The age range of the victims was 24–35 years. Five cases were attempted inside of cars and two cases were attempted indoors. The reporting and portrayal of the unusual accidental deaths, as well as the reporting of the means used in the suicide may have potentially led younger people exposed to such stimuli to unexpectedly facilitate suicidal acts by the method described in the media. Two Gram-negative, non-motile, short rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated as 8A(T) and 28A, were isolated from Mount Deogyusan, Jeonbuk Province, South Korea. The isolates were analyzed by a polyphasic approach, revealing variations in their phenotypic characters but high DNA-DNA hybridisation values reciprocally, confirming that they belong to the same species. Both the isolates also showed a high resistance to UV compared with Deinococcus radiodurans, and a gamma-radiation resistance similar to other members of the genus Deinococcus. Phylogenetic analysis with the 16S rRNA gene sequences of closely related species indicated their similarities were below 97 %. Chemotaxonomic data showed the most abundant fatty acids to be C16:1ω7c and C16:0. The strains can be distinguished from closely related species by the production of esterase (C4) and α-galactosidase, and by their ability to assimilate L-alanine, L-histidine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic, and chemotaxonomic data, the isolates represent a novel species of the genus Deinococcus, for which the name Deinococcus radioresistens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 8A(T) (KEMB 9004-109(T) = JCM 19777(T)), and a second strain is 28A (KEMB 9004-113 = JCM 19778).

A Gram-stain negative, strictly aerobic, motile by gliding, rod-shaped and yellow pigmented strain THG-G12T was isolated from soil of a bamboo field in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Strain THG-G12T was observed to grow well at 20–28 °C and pH 7.0–7.5 in the absence of NaCl on nutrient agar. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, strain THG-G12T was found to be most closely related to Pedobacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 104T (97.5 % sequence similarity), Pedobacter steynii WB2.3-45T (97.4 %), Pedobacter metabolipauper WB2.3-71T (97.2 %), Pedobacter nyackensis NWG-II14T (97.2 %), Pedobacter caeni LMG 22862T (97.1 %) and Pedobacter duraquae WB2.1-25T (97.0 %), but DNA relatedness between strain THG-G12T and its phylogenetically closest neighbours was below 9.5 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was determined to be 39.9 mol%. The only isoprenoid quinone detected in strain THG-G12T was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The major component in the polyamine pattern was sym-homospermidine. The major polar lipids were found to be phosphatidylethanolamine, unidentified phosphoglycolipids, unidentified aminophosphoglycolipids, unidentified aminolipids and unidentified lipids. Strain THG-G12T showed the presence of two ceramide phosphorylethanolamines (CerPE-2′ and CerPE-2″), dihydrosphingosines and an unidentified ceramide as the major ceramide. The major fatty acids were identified as summed feature 3 (as defined by the MIDI system; C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c) and iso-C15:0. These data support the affiliation of strain THG-G12T to the genus Pedobacter. The results of physiological and biochemical tests enabled strain THG-G12T to be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from the recognized species of the genus Pedobacter. Therefore, the novel isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Pedobacter seoulensis sp. nov. is proposed, with THG-G12T as the type strain (=KACC 17529T =JCM 19363T).

A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, and rod-shaped bacterium designated THG 07(T) was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field of Pocheon in South Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic study. Strain THG 07(T) grew optimally at 25-30°C and at pH 6.5-7.0 and in the absence of NaCl on nutrient agar. Strain THG-T17(T) displayed β-glucosidase activity that was responsible for its ability to transform ginsenoside Rb1 (one of the dominant ginsenosides of ginseng) to compound C-K. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain THG 07(T) was shown to belong to the family Sphingobacteriaceae and was related to Sphingobacterium canadense CR11(T) (98.7%), S. cladoniae No.6(T) (98.1%), S. detergens 6.2S(T) (98.0%), S. multivorum IAM14316(T) (97.9%), S. siyangense SY1(T) (97.8%) and S. thalpophilum DSM11723(T) (96.9%). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 40.6 mol%. The major menaquinone, MK-7, and major fatty acids, iso-C₁₅:₀ and C₁₆:₁ ω7c and/or ω6c, supported the affiliation of strain THG 07(T) to the genus Sphingobacterium. The DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain THG 07(T) and its closest phylogenetic neighbors were below 26.9%. The results of physiological and biochemical tests enabled strain THG 07(T) to be differentiated phenotypically from the recognized species of the genus Sphingobacterium. Therefore the isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Sphingobacterium ginsenosidimutans sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain THG 07(T) (=KACC 14526(T)=JCM 16722(T)).

Treatment of severe acute cholecystitis by laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains controversial because of technical difficulties and high rates of complications. We determined whether early laparoscopic cholecystectomy is appropriate for acute gangrenous cholecystitis. The medical records of 116 patients with acute gangrenous cholecystitis admitted to the Korea University Guro Hospital between January 2005 and December 2009 were reviewed. The early operation group, those patients who had cholecystectomies within 4 days of the diagnosis, was compared with the delayed operation group, who had cholecystectomies 4 days after the diagnosis. Of the 116 patients, 57 were in the early operation group and 59 were in the delayed operation group. There were no statistical differences between the groups with respect to gender, age, body mass index, operative methods, major complications, duration of symptoms, mean operative time (98 vs 107 minutes), or postoperative hospital stay. However, the total hospital stay was significantly longer in the delayed operation group. More patients underwent preoperative percutaneous cholecystostomy in the delayed operation group (3.5 vs 15.3%). Early laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute gangrenous cholecystitis is safe and feasible. There is no advantage to postponing an urgent operation in patients with acute gangrenous cholecystitis.

We investigated the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal colonization status of Pinus thunbergii mature trees and regenerating seedlings varying in age in coastal pine forests on the east coast of Korea. We established one 20 x 20-m plot at each of two study sites at P. thunbergii coastal forests in Samcheok. Fifty soil blocks (5 x 5 x 15 cm) were sampled at regular intervals, and ten P. thunbergii seedlings of age 0, 1-3, 3-5, and 5-10 years were sampled in each study plot. In total of 27 ECM fungal taxa, Cenococcum geophilum was dominant, followed by Russula sp., Sebacina sp., and unidentified Cortinuris sp. in mature trees. In 0-year-old seedlings, some fungal species such as Sebacina sp., C. geophilum, and unidentified Cortinarius sp. were dominant whereas only C. geophilum was dominant after 1 year, and there were no apparent succession patterns in ECM fungal compositions beyond a host age of 1 year. Most ECM fungal taxa that had colonized seedlings of each age class were also observed in roots of mature trees in each site. These taxa accounted for 86.7-100% and 96.4-98.4% of ECM abundance in seedlings and mature trees, respectively. The results indicate that the species composition of ECM fungal taxa colonizing seedlings of different age in forests is similar to that of surrounding mature trees. Our results also showed that C. geophilum is a common and dominant ECM fungus in P. thunbergii coastal forests and might play a significant role in their regeneration.

Disruption of cell cycle controls is a pathognomonic feature of all malignant cells. Therefore, we immunohistochemically investigated the relationship between cell cycle regulatory proteins and clinicopathologic features in order to identify the biomarkers related to the outcome of patients with biliary tract cancer (BTC). A cohort of paraffin-embedded specimens were selected from 36 patients, including 18 gallbladder and 18 extrahepatic bile duct cancers, who underwent curative or palliative surgical resection at Korea University Medical Center from June 1998 to December 2004. Tissue microarrays were used to investigate the immunohistochemical staining for p21, p27, p53, cyclin D1, bcl2, and Ki-67. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were performed to determine the prognostic significance of each protein expression. Absence of p21 expression independently predicted poor outcome in all cases. Well-differentiated tumor was found to be an independent good prognostic factor in gallbladder cancer. Absence of p21 expression and moderately to poorly differentiated tumor were found to be an independent poor prognostic factor in patients with negative for neural invasion. Absence of p21 and bcl2 were found to be an independent poor prognostic factor in patients with no lymph node metastasis. Absence of p21 expression was a significant independent poor prognostic factor in BTC, partly in patients with biologically less aggressive phenotypes. This finding suggests that determination of p21 expression in surgically resected specimens may provide prognostic information in addition to conventional pathologic findings for patients with BTC, especially those who have biologically less aggressive phenotypes.

Background: EMR has been accepted as a treatment modality for selected cases of early gastric cancer (EGC) in Japan. However, long-term outcomes after EMR for EGC have not been fully documented., Objectives: We reviewed the experiences of EMR for EGC in Korea, with emphasis on the long-term outcome., Design: Multicenter, retrospective study., Methods: Data were collected retrospectively by use of the on-line database registry system. From January 2000 to December 2002, 514 EGCs in 506 patients were treated by EMR in 13 institutions in Korea. Median age of the patients was 60 years (range 45-83 years). The resection was regarded as incomplete if histopathologic examination revealed a positive resection margin or submucosal invasion or positive lymphovascular invasion or undifferentiated histologic diagnosis., Results: The most commonly used technique was circumferential precutting followed by snare resection (EMR-P, n = 269, 52.3%). Complete resection and incomplete resection after EMR were confirmed in 399 lesions (77.6%) and 103 lesions (20.0%), respectively. For completely resected mucosal cancers (n = 399), the median duration of follow-up was 23.5 months (range 5-70 months). In this group, local recurrence was detected in 24 cases (6.0%) with a median interval between EMR and recurrence of 17.9 months (range 3.5-51.7 months). There were 3 cases with perforation and 71 cases with bleeding. No deaths were related to recurrence of gastric cancer during the overall median follow-up period of 39 months., Limitations: Multicenter retrospective design, no controls., Conclusions: EMR is an effective therapeutic modality for selected cases of EGC in Korea.

To assess the regional difference and influence of the biological variables on atherosclerosis in female, we analyzed 7 segments of aorta (2 ascending, 3 thoracic, and 2 abdominal) from 90 superficially healthy Korean women (39+/-14 yr of age) who died from external causes. Tissue specimens were macroscopically examined and histopathologically divided into 7 grades for scoring (ATHERO, from 0=intact, to 6=thrombi formation). Lumen diameter (LD), wall thickness (WT), intima thickness (INT), and media thickness (MED) were obtained by computed morphometry. Atherosclerosis was common in the distal infrarenal (C2), proximal thoracic (B1), and proximal ascending (A1) segments. Total 95.6% of all subjects had atherosclerosis of variable degree in one or more segments, but an aneurysmal change was not found. The number of atherosclerotic segments and atherosclerosis score in the 7 segments increased with aging. However, the body size did not affect the aortic size and ATHERO. With aging, LD and INT of the A1, B1 and C2 increased (p<.00001); WT of the B1 and C2 increased (p<.01); and MED of C2 decreased (p<.01). LD and WT of the B1 and C2 (p<.05), INT of the A1, B1 and C2 (p<.00001) increased, and MED of C2 decreased (p<.01) with ATHERO. These data suggest that age is simple but a reliable parameter for estimating the progression of atherosclerosis.

It remains unclear whether there is an association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and human breast cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of HPV DNA in breast carcinomas of Korean women and to examine the possible association between HPV and breast cancer development. For this purpose, HPV DNAs from 154 patients, including 123 patients with breast carcinoma and 31 with intraductal papilloma, and nipple tissue from 27 cancer patients were examined using the DNA chip method. HPV DNA was detected in 8 breast carcinomas (6.5%) but in no intraductal papilloma. All detected HPV genotypes were of high-risk groups. There was a slightly increased incidence in papillary carcinomas (11.5%) and invasive ductal carcinomas with adjacent intraductal papillomas (11.8%) compared to the other histological subtypes (3.2-4.3%), although the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.126). The presence of HPV DNA was not correlated with specific prognostic predictors of disease. High-risk HPV DNA sequences were present in 6.5% of Korean patients with breast tumors. We report here on the multiple genital tract neoplasms in a 41-yr-old Korean woman with Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome (PJS). The patient presented with lower abdominal pain. Her previous medical history was PJS and breast cancer. Pelvic ultrasound showed a multilocular cyst at the right adnexal region, diagnosed as bilateral ovarian mucinous borderline tumors. An ovarian sex cord tumor with annular tubules was incidentally diagnosed together with a minimal deviation adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix and mucinous metaplasia of both the Fallopian tubal mucosa and the endometrium. Although the cases of multiple genital tract tumors with PJS has rarely been reported, the present case appears to be the first in Korea in which the PJS syndrome was complicated by multiple genital tract tumors and infiltrating carcinoma of the breast. The clinical significance of the multiple genital tract tumors and breast cancer associated with PJS is reviewed.

We evaluated the causes of the first outbreak of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms in Narodo and the Southern coast of Namhaedo on the South Sea, as well as the outbreak of C. polykrikoides blooms in the East Sea and around Wando. From the results of AGP tests using diverse seawater types, we identified seawaters in which C. polykrikoides grow well and those in which they do not, depending on the sampling time and location. The reason for C. polykrikoides blooms initially occurring in Narodo, Namhaedo, and Gujaedo seems to be because the seawater that promotes the growth of C. polykrikoides is transported to the areas of primary generation, such as these three areas, by the influence of the Tsushima Warm Current. The reason that C. polykrikoides blooms occur in the coastal area of Wando and the East Sea is because after the seawater promoting the growth of C. polykrikoides is transported to these areas, the amount of sun radiation increases, and abundant nutrients flow in from heavy rains, resulting in mass propagation of C. polykrikoides. The origin of the seawater that promotes the growth of C. polykrikoides is assumed to be the southern section of the southern coastal area of Narodo, Namhaedo, and Gujaedo, in which C. polykrikoides blooms were initially discovered. The components of the f/2 medium (N, P, Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Mo, B12, biotin, thiamine) do not seem to trigger the occurrence of C. polykrikoides blooms.

Objectives: Oxidative DNA damage is a known risk factor of lung cancer. The glutathione peroxidase (GPX) antioxidant enzyme that reduces hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides plays a significant role in protecting cells from the oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species. The aim of this case-control study was to investigate effects of oxidative stress and genetic polymorphisms of the GPX1 genes and the interaction between them in the carcinogenesis of lung cancer., Methods: Two hundreds patients with lung cancer and 200 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled in this study. Every subject was asked to complete a questionnaire concerning their smoking habits and their environmental exposure to PAHs. The genotypes of the GPX1 and 8-oxoguanine glycosylase 1 (hOGG1) genes were examined and the concentrations of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP), 2-naphthol and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) were measured., Results: Cigarette smoking was a significant risk factor for lung cancer. The levels of urinary 8-OH-dG were higher in the patients (p < 0.001), whereas the urinary 1-OHP and 2-naphthol levels were higher in the controls. The GPX1 codon 198 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Individuals carrying the Pro/Leu or Leu/Leu genotype of GPX1 were at a higher risk for lung cancer (adjusted OR = 2.29). In addition, these individuals were shown to have high urinary 8-OH-dG concentrations compared to the individuals with the GPX1 Pro/Pro genotype. On the other hand, the polymorphism of the hOGG1 gene did not affect the lung cancer risk and the oxidative DNA damage., Conclusions: These results lead to a conclusion that individuals with the GPX1 Pro/Leu or Leu/Leu genotype would be more susceptible to the lung cancer induced by oxidative stress than those individuals with the Pro/Pro genotype.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a neurotropic DNA virus which has latency in human. In this study, we isolated various HSV-1 strains, named KHS, from the skin lesions of Korean patients and characterized the specific features of each strain. We found that KHS strains produced small, cell associated and nonsyncycial plaques in Vero cells. We classified KHS strains into two substrains, KHS 1 which had highly condensed plaques and KHS 2 which had less condensed plaques. Since gD protein of HSV-1 plays important roles in viral plaque formation, we determined the nucleotide sequences of gD genes of KHS strains. According to deduced amino acid sequences of gD protein in KHS strains compared with prototype strains KOS and F, we found that gD of KHS strains have more putative O-glycosidic sites, serine in KHS 1 and threonine in KHS 2, respectively. To find out the establishment of viral latency, we infected each virus strain into eyes of mice and carried out trigerminal ganglia explanting experiment. We found that both KHS strains established latent infections stably just as did the prototype KOS and F strains. The eye swab experiments were carried out to check the viral replication in vivo. KHS 1 exhibited a longer shedding time in eyes of mice. We also found that KHS 1 has a higher neurotropic affinity by determining the time it took for the virus to reach the trigerminal ganglia from the eyes. Currently, we are studying the possible mechanism of high neuroinvasiveness of KHS 1 strain.
