The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Double-Moment 6-class (WDM6) scheme was modified by incorporating prognostic graupel density. Explicitly prognosed graupel density, in turn, modifies graupel characteristics such as the fall velocity–diameter and mass–diameter relationships of graupel. The modified WDM6 has been evaluated based on a two-dimensional (2D) idealized squall line simulation and winter snowfall events that occurred during the International Collaborative Experiment for Pyeongchang Olympics and Paralympics (ICE-POP 2018) field campaign over the Korean Peninsula. From the 2D simulation, we confirmed that the modified WDM6 can simulate varying graupel density, ranging from low values in an anvil clouds region to high values in the convective region at the mature stage of a squall line. Simulations with the modified WDM6 increase graupel amounts at the surface and decreased graupel aloft because of the faster sedimentation of graupel for two winter snowfall cases during the ICE-POP 2018 campaign, as simulated in the 2D idealized model. The altered graupel sedimentation in the modified WDM6 influenced the magnitude of the major microphysical processes of graupel and snow, subsequently reducing the surface snow amount and precipitation over the mountainous region. The reduced surface precipitation over the mountainous region mitigates the surface precipitation bias observed in the original WDM6, resulting in better statistical skill scores for the root mean square errors. Notably, the modified WDM6 reasonably captures the relationship between graupel density and its fall velocity, as retrieved from 2D video disdrometer measurements, thus emphasizing the necessity of including prognostic graupel density to realistically represent the microphysical properties of graupel in models. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence and determinants of unhealthy living by gender, age, and comorbidities across Korean districts. METHODS: For 806,246 men and 923,260 women from 245 districts who participated in the 2010-2017 Korean Community Health Surveys, risk scores were calculated based on obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and high-risk alcohol consumption, each scored from 0 (lowest risk) to 2 (highest risk). A risk score ≥4 was defined as indicating unhealthy living, and weighted proportions were calculated for each district. Using multivariate regression, an ecological model including community socioeconomic, interpersonal, and neighborhood factors was examined by gender, age, and comorbidities. RESULTS: The mean age-standardized rate of unhealthy living was 24.05% for men and 4.91% for women (coefficients of variation, 13.94% and 29.51%, respectively). Individuals with chronic diseases more frequently exhibited unhealthy lifestyles. Unhealthy lifestyles were associated with educational attainment (β-coefficients: men, -0.21; women, -0.15), high household income (β=0.08 and 0.03, respectively), pub density (β=0.52 and 0.22, respectively), and fast-food outlet density (β=2.81 and 1.63, respectively). Negative associations were observed with manual labor, social activity participation, and hospital bed density. Unhealthy living was positively associated with living alone among women and with being unemployed among middle-aged men. Access to parks was negatively associated with unhealthy living among young men and women. The ecological model explained 32% of regional variation in men and 41% in women. CONCLUSIONS: Improving the neighborhood built and socioeconomic environment may reduce regional disparities in lifestyle behaviors; however, the impacts may vary according to socio-demographic traits and comorbidities. OBJECTIVES: This study developed an algorithm for identifying pregnancy episodes and estimating the last menstrual period (LMP) in an administrative claims database and applied it to investigate the use of pregnancy-incompatible immunosuppressants among pregnant women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: An algorithm was developed and applied to a nationwide claims database in Korea. Pregnancy episodes were identified using a hierarchy of pregnancy outcomes and clinically plausible periods for subsequent episodes. The LMP was estimated using preterm delivery, sonography, and abortion procedure codes. Otherwise, outcome-specific estimates were applied, assigning a fixed gestational age to the corresponding pregnancy outcome. The algorithm was used to examine the prevalence of pregnancies and utilization of pregnancy-incompatible immunosuppressants (cyclophosphamide [CYC]/mycophenolate mofetil [MMF]/methotrexate [MTX]) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) during pregnancy in SLE patients. RESULTS: The pregnancy outcomes identified in SLE patients included live births (67%), stillbirths (2%), and abortions (31%). The LMP was mostly estimated with outcome-specific estimates for full-term births (92.3%) and using sonography procedure codes (54.7%) and preterm delivery diagnosis codes (37.9%) for preterm births. The use of CYC/MMF/MTX decreased from 7.6% during preconception to 0.2% at the end of pregnancy. CYC/MMF/MTX use was observed in 3.6% of women within 3 months preconception and 2.5% during 0-7 weeks of pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents the first pregnancy algorithm using a Korean administrative claims database. Although further validation is necessary, this study provides a foundation for evaluating the safety of medications during pregnancy using secondary databases in Korea, especially for rare diseases. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to establish the validity--specifically, the sensitivity and specificity--of the screening questionnaire and diagnostic criteria for oral frailty proposed by the Korean Academy of Geriatric Dentistry (KAGD) among community- dwelling older adults. METHODS: This study enrolled 100 participants. Among various definitions of oral frailty, this study used the criteria proposed by Tanaka as the reference test. The screening questionnaire consisted of 11 items for screening physical frailty, chewing ability, swallowing difficulties, oral dryness, and tongue and lip motor function. Each question had a different scoring weight, and if the total score was 1 or higher, an oral frailty diagnostic examination proposed by the KAGD would be recommended. The diagnostic test was the oral frailty diagnostic criteria proposed by the KAGD including 6 measures: chewing ability, occlusal force, tongue pressure, oral dryness, swallowing difficulty, and oral hygiene. If a participant exhibited 2 or more positive measures, this participant was classified as "oral frail." The screening questionnaire was analyzed using a cut-off value of 1 or higher, while the diagnostic criteria utilized a cut-off of 2 or more positive measures. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated. RESULTS: The screening questionnaire showed significant power for screening oral frailty (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.783; sensitivity, 87.8%; specificity, 52.5%). The diagnostic accuracy of the newly proposed diagnostic criteria was acceptable (sensitivity, 95.1%; specificity, 42.4%). CONCLUSIONS: The newly proposed screening questionnaire and diagnostic criteria in Korea appear to be a useful tool to identify oral frailty in community-dwelling older adults. A new version of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) double-moment 6-class (WDM6) microphysics scheme was developed based on the existing WDM6 scheme by predicting snow and graupel number concentrations. The new WDM6 scheme was tested for summer rainfall and winter snowfall cases to evaluate the effects of prognostic number concentration of snow and graupel on the simulated precipitation. The number concentration of snow decreases at the upper layers and the one of graupel also decreases at all layers in the new WDM6 scheme compared to the diagnosed ones in the original WDM6 scheme. Rain number concentration is remarkably reduced in the new WDM6 scheme due to the newly added and modified sink processes. Therefore, the new scheme produces a larger size of raindrops with a reduced number concentration than the original scheme, which hinders raindrop evaporation and produces more surface rain. Even though the enhanced surface rainfall in the new scheme deteriorates the bias score, the new scheme improves the statistical skill of the equitable threat score and probability of detection in most cases. These scores all improved for warm-type summer cases in the new scheme. The new scheme also shows more comparable features to the observation for the probability density functions of simulated liquid equivalent precipitation rates by alleviating the overprediction problem of precipitation frequencies belonging to heavy precipitation categories. Background and Objective: Utility provides a preference for specific health state in economic evaluation, and they obtained from general population could be useful in respect of societal resource allocation. We aimed to investigate the utilities of health states for heart failure (HF), a major and growing public health problem, related to hospitalization and adverse drug effects by interrogating the general Korean population.Methods: Five health states for patients with HF were developed based on literature reviews: stable chronic heart failure (SCHF), hospitalization, SCHF + cough, SCHF + hypotension, and SCHF + hyperkalemia. We selected 100 individuals from the general population through quota sampling by age, sex, and region, and conducted face-to-face interviews. We measured utilities for 5 hypothetical health states of HF using both time trade-off (TTO) and EuroQol-5 dimensions-5 levels (EQ-5D-5L). Repeated-measures analysis of variance compared the utilities between all health states for each instrument. To identify the factors affecting the utility, a linear mixed model (LMM) analysis was performed.Results: The mean utility value for SCHF, SCHF + cough, SCHF + hypotension, SCHF + hyperkalemia, and hospitalization was calculated as 0.815, 0.732, 0.646, 0.548, and 0.360, respectively, by using TTO. The respective values using EQ-5D-5L were 0.871, 0.793, 0.710, 0.589, and 0.215. The utilities for HF significantly differed between all health states in each instrument (p < 0.001). In LMM analysis, hospitalization had a significantly negative effect on the utilities of both instruments.Conclusions: The utilities decreased in order of SCHF, SCHF + cough, SCHF + hypotension, SCHF + hyperkalemia, and hospitalization. Although there has been suggestive evidence of the association between TRAP and ADs, findings remained inconsistent possibly due to limited population. We investigated the association between TRAP and ADs in a large population of children with rich spatial coverage and expanded age span in Seoul, Korea. TRAP exposures were estimated by categorized proximity to the nearest major road (≤150, 150–300, 300–500, and >500 m) and density of major roads within 300 meters from children’s residences. We estimated the association between two TRAP exposures and three ADs using generalized mixed model after adjusting for individual characteristics. We also investigated whether the association varied by household and regional socioeconomic status. We found associations of atopic eczema with road density [OR = 1.08; 95% CI = 1.01–1.15] and road proximity [1.15, 1.01–1.32; 1.17, 1.03–1.34; and 1.16, 1.01–1.34 for ≤150, 150–300, and 300–500 m, resp., compared to >500 m]. There was no association with asthma and allergic rhinitis. Effect estimates were generally the highest in the low socioeconomic region. Children living in areas surrounded by large and busy roads were likely to be at greater risks for atopic eczema, with increased vulnerability when living in deprived areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research proposes the composition logic of an Active Learning Environment (ALE), to enable discovery by learning through experience, whilst increasing knowledge about modern architectural heritage. Linking information to the historical heritage using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) helps to overcome the limits of previous learning methods, by providing rich learning resources on site. Existing field trips of cultural heritages are created to impart limited experience content from web resources, or receive content at a specific place through humanities Geographic Information System (GIS). Therefore, on the basis of the blended space theory, an augmented space experience method for overcoming these shortages was composed. An ALE space framework is proposed to enable discovery through learning in an expanded space. The operation of ALE space is needed to create full coordination, such as a Content Management System (CMS). It involves a relation network to provide knowledge to the rule engine of the CMS. Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to describe the incidence and intensity of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) and patterns of symptom change after chemotherapy among Korean cancer patients for whom antiemetic guidelines were widely utilized and guideline-consistent antiemetics were available. The study also aimed to determine the contribution of known risk factors for CINV to the incidence and intensity of CINV, as well as patterns of symptom change.Methods: A prospective observational descriptive study was conducted. A total of 332 adult cancer patients starting their first adjuvant chemotherapy participated in this study. Items of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer Antiemesis Tool were utilized to generate a symptom diary. Descriptive statistics, logistic regression analyses, repeated measures ANOVA, and hierarchical generalized linear models were applied to analyze the data.Results: Vomiting occurred, on average, less than once in the acute and delayed phases, and its frequency remained similar throughout 5 days after chemotherapy infusion in the first and second cycles. A quadratic pattern of nausea change was found. Nausea intensity increased to a peak on the third day after chemotherapy infusion (first-cycle incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 1.40 and second-cycle IRR = 1.27, both p < .001) and then changed gradually (first-cycle IRR = 0.69 and second-cycle and IRR = 0.76, both p < .001). Nausea experience in the previous cycle contributed to the subsequent nausea intensity (IRR = 2.78, p < .001). Younger age, consuming less alcohol, and expecting nausea were identified as risk factors for chemotherapy-induced nausea that needed to be considered from the start of the chemotherapy.Conclusions: Nausea control, especially in the delayed phase, has room for improvement. As the first chemotherapy-induced nausea experience contributes to subsequent symptom experience, intense control from the start of chemotherapy is necessary while considering patient-related risk factors. Objective: We performed this prospective study to identify both the incidence of adrenal insufficiency (AI) and healthrelated quality of life (HRQOL) in advanced gastric cancer (AGC) patients who were treated with the S-1 plus cisplatin (SP) regimen as a first-line palliative chemotherapy. Methods: We assessed adverse events (AEs) observed in 52 patients who received the SP regimen for AGC between January 2009 and June 2010 using the Common Toxicity Criteria Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 3.0. Adrenal function was assessed at baseline and 12 weeks after chemotherapy using the low-dose adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test. HRQOL was assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire version 3.0 (EORTC-QLQ C30). Results: The incidence of AI was 30.8% (n = 16) and of AE observed 55% (n = 29) among 52 patients after 12 weeks of chemotherapy. Of 29 patients with AE, 34.4% (n = 10) were diagnosed with AI, and of 23 patients without AE, 26.1% (n = 6) were diagnosed with AI. Conclusion: The incidence of secondary AI in AGC patients was not rare and was not correlated with the presence of nonspecific AEs. Although patients diagnosed with AI did not show any related symptoms, they are at risk of potentially life-threatening consequences. Aims and objectives To identify the impact of preprocedural left ventricular ejection fraction and adherence to prescribed medication on major adverse cardiac events in patients with a successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Background Although advances in percutaneous coronary intervention for coronary artery disease have considerably reduced poor outcomes such as major adverse cardiac events, many patients still experience adverse outcomes after a percutaneous coronary intervention. Thus, in patients with percutaneous coronary intervention, it is extremely important to identify the predictors for major adverse cardiac events. Design A retrospective and cross-sectional design. Methods Three hundred and nineteen patients who underwent successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention participated in this study. Participants were assessed for major adverse cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention for the first year. Preprocedural left ventricular ejection fraction was measured by echocardiogram. Medication adherence was used with the validated Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 items at the first year after the successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Results Of the 319 patients, 102 had major adverse cardiac events after the successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention. On the basis of Cox regression, after adjusting for patient characteristics, lower baseline left ventricular ejection fraction and medication nonadherence and were statistically significant and independent predictors of major adverse cardiac events. Conclusions Our results show that major adverse cardiac events after successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention are associated with low left ventricular ejection fraction at baseline and medication nonadherence after discharge. Therefore, healthcare providers should consider multidimensional approaches to improve low left ventricular ejection fraction and medication adherence. Relevance to clinical practice The findings suggest that the classification of high-risk patients after percutaneous coronary intervention need to be based on level of preprocedural left ventricular ejection fraction. Although previous research based on data from the U.S. suggests that parents' widowhood is associated with increased emotional support from children, little is known about the impact of late-life widowhood on intergenerational relationships in other cultures. Using data of Korean older adults, this paper examined: (1) the effect of widowhood on both positive and negative aspects of parent-child relationships and (2) whether these effects are moderated by older adults' expectations about children's filial responsibilities and the geographic proximity to their children. Analyses are based on data from the Hallym Aging Study, a stratified multi-stage probability sample of older adults living in the cities of Seoul and Chuncheon in Korea. Compared to married older adults, widowed persons in this sample reported higher levels of ambivalence, lower levels of positive interactions, and higher levels of negative interactions with their children. Parents' notion about filial responsibilities did not have a significant moderating effect, whereas geographic proximity to children was a significant moderator. Findings suggest that widowhood is associated with greater strain in intergenerational relationships in Korea. Helping widowed older adults forge constructive relationships with their children may enhance both bereaved older adults' and their children's well-being in this cultural milieu. This study investigates speech perception in noise (SPIN) in Korean. A new type of Korean SPIN test was developed by adopting a similar format to the English SPIN test. The predictability effects, noise effects and their interactions were examined in order to verify the previous findings based on English. The data from 14 Korean adults collected with this new type of Korean SPIN test confirmed the previous findings: first, the participants' overall performance was better in low noise conditions than in high noise conditions. Secondly, there was a tendency for highly predictable words to be more accurately perceived than less predictable words especially in high noise conditions. The results were interpreted in such a way that the listeners actively used both types of information: acoustic information and contextual information in speech perception. When the acoustic property of the speech sound was degraded with noise, the listeners took advantage of the linguistic contextual information in their processing of the speech sound. The findings of this study conform to those of the previous studies based on the English SPIN test. In addition, a possible effect of the frequency of target word was also found, calling for further investigation in this field of research in Korean. Implications of the results were also discussed. Background: The correlation between allergic disease and Helicobacter pylori infection is still controversial in endemic areas. The aim of this study was to determine whether H. pylori infection is related to allergic disease and/or immunoglobulin E (IgE) hypersensitivity in Korean adults. Materials and Methods: Consecutive Korean adults who visited our center for a routine checkup were enrolled. All subjects completed a questionnaire that was designed to ascertain their medical history pertaining to physiciandiagnosed allergic disease, allergy treatments, and H. pylori eradication therapy. Blood was sampled for serum anti-H. pylori IgG antibody. IgE hypersensitivity was measured using a commercially available ImmunoCAP® Phadiatop (Phadia AB, Uppsala, Sweden). Results: Of the 3376 Korean adults who were enrolled, 62 did not answer to the questionnaires adequately and were thus excluded. The proportion of noninfected subjects (p < .001) and the prevalence of IgE-related allergic disease (p < .001) were both highest among those aged <40 years, while the prevalence of non-IgE-related allergic disease was highest among those aged ⩾70 years (p < .001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that being younger than 40 years was significantly related to the absence of H. pylori infection (OR = 2.507, 95% CI = 1.621-3.878, p < .001). Conclusions: The statuses of H. pylori infection, IgE hypersensitivity, and allergic diseases differ with age group, there being a higher prevalence of IgE-related allergic disease and a lower H. pylori infection rate among young adults. The hygiene hypothesis might explain these findings in young Koreans, due to the rapid development and improvements in sanitation in Korea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Although a plethora of studies have delineated the relationship between childhood trauma and onset, symptom severity, and course of depression and anxiety disorders, there has been little evidence that childhood trauma may lead to interpersonal problems among adult patients with depression and anxiety disorders. Given the lack of prior research in this area, we aimed to investigate characteristics of interpersonal problems in adult patients who had suffered various types of abuse and neglect in childhood. Methods A total of 325 outpatients diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorders completed questionnaires on socio-demographic variables, different forms of childhood trauma, and current interpersonal problems. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was used to measure five different forms of childhood trauma (emotional abuse, emotional neglect, physical abuse, physical neglect, and sexual abuse) and the short form of the KoreanInventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scale (KIIP-SC) was used to assess current interpersonal problems. We dichotomized patients into two groups (abused and non-abused groups) based on CTQ score and investigated the relationship of five different types of childhood trauma and interpersonal problems in adult patients with depression and anxiety disorders using multiple regression analysis. Result Different types of childhood abuse and neglect appeared to have a significant influence on distinct symptom dimensions such as depression, state-trait anxiety, and anxiety sensitivity. In the final regression model, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and sexual abuse during childhood were significantly associated with general interpersonal distress and several specific areas of interpersonal problems in adulthood. No association was found between childhood physical neglect and current general interpersonal distress. Conclusion Childhood emotional trauma has more influence on interpersonal problems in adult patients with depression and anxiety disorders than childhood physical trauma. A history of childhood physical abuse is related to dominant interpersonal patterns rather than submissive interpersonal patterns in adulthood. Background: Neck and shoulder pain is fairly common among adolescents in Korea and results in significant health problem. The aims of this prospective study was to identify the effects of education, in terms of recognition of this issue and posture correction, on prevalence and severity of neck and shoulder pain in Korean adolescents. Methods: A prospective, observational cohort design was used. The 912 students from two academic high schools in the city of Seoul were eligible for the current study and 887 completed this study. After a baseline cross-sectional survey, students listened to a lecture about cervical health, focusing on good posture, habits, and stretching exercises to protect the spine, and were encouraged by their teachers to keep the appropriate position. And follow-ups were conducted 3 months later, to evaluate the effect of education. Results: The prevalence of neck and shoulder pain was decreased 19.5% (from 82.5 to 66.4%). The baseline mean usual and worst numeric rating scale were 19.9/100 (95% CI, 18.1-21.7) and 31.2/100 (95% CI, 28.7-33.2), respectively. On the follow-up survey, the mean usual and worst numeric rating scale were decreased significantly by 24.1 and 21.7%, respectively, compared with baseline (P < 0.01). Of the 570 students reporting neck and shoulder pain, 16.4% responded that they had experienced improvement during the 3 months. Conclusions: Education; recognition of this issue and posture correction, for cervical health appeared to be effective in decreasing the prevalence and severity of neck and shoulder pain at a 3 month follow-up. A total of 156 Shiga-like toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) were isolated from fecal samples of Korean native (100/568, 18%) and Holstein dairy cattle (56/524, 11%) in Korea between September 2010 and July 2011. Fifty-two STEC isolates (33%) harbored both of shiga toxin1 (stx1) and shiga toxin2 (stx2) genes encoding enterohemolysin (EhxA) and autoagglutinating adhesion (Saa) were detected by PCR in 83 (53%) and 65 (42%) isolates, respectively. By serotyping, six STEC from native cattle and four STEC from dairy cattle were identified as 0-serotypes (026, 0111, 0104, and 0157) that can cause human disease. Multilocus sequence typing and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns highlighted the genetic diversity of the STEC strains and difference between strains collected during different years. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests showed that the multidrug resistance rate increased from 12% in 2010 to 42% in 2011. Differences between isolates collected in 2010 and 2011 may have resulted from seasonal variations or large-scale slaughtering in Korea performed to control a foot and mouth disease outbreak that occurred in early 2011. However, continuous epidemiologic studies will be needed to understand mechanisms. Objectives: To investigate awareness and experience of menopausal symptom and hormone therapy in Korean postmenopausal women. Methods: A total of 570 postmenopausal women were accepted our survey. The women filled out the questionnaires composed of medical and surgical history, menopausal age and symptom, demand of treatment on menopausal symptom, and personal method for overcoming the symptom. Also, we make inquiries about experience of hormone therapy, concern about hormone therapy, improvement of menopausal symptom after therapy, adverse effect, and cause of cease the therapy. Results: According to the survey, 80% (456/570) of the women experienced menopausal symptom. When they felt the symptom at first, 47% (213/570) of women was 46-50 years old. The most common menopausal symptom was hot flushes (141/570). A number of Korean women regarded that menopause was a natural process of ageing (69%). Eighty two% of women thought to need to have treatment on menopausal symptom. However, only half (43%) visited doctor. The most concerned disease after menopause they had answered was osteoporosis (60%) but only 22% of women were taken regular check-up of bone mineral density. The common causes were unwilling to do treatment were concern about adverse effect (51%) and indefinite fear of cancer (32%). Moreover, many women got diverse information about menopause from the mass media than professional advice. Conclusion: Only a minority of Korean postmenopausal women with menopausal symptoms had taken a hormone therapy. We should provide appropriate education and counsel to Korean peri-menopause women. Abstract: Aims: The (2′S,7′S)-O-(2-methylbutanoyl)-columbianetin (OMC) is a novel secondary metabolite extracted from Corydalis heterocarpa, which has long been used as a folk medicine for various inflammatory diseases in Korea. We examined the effect of OMC on allergic rhinitis (AR). Main methods: We assessed the therapeutic effects and regulatory mechanisms of OMC on the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate plus A23187-stimulated mast cell line, HMC-1 cells and ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR models. Key findings: OMC significantly decreased the releases of histamine and tryptase from stimulated HMC-1 cells. The degranulation process, characterized by morphological extension of the filopodia on the surface and membrane ruffling, was strongly induced in the stimulated-HMC-1 cell, however OMC suppressed the morphological changes in stimulated-HMC-1 cells. OMC reduced the production and mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines. These inhibitory actions by OMC were dependent on the regulation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, nuclear factor-κB, and caspapase-1 signaling pathways. In the AR animal model, the increased rub scores and AR biomarkers (histamine and IgE) in ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice were significantly reduced by the administration of OMC. Furthermore, eosinophils and mast cell infiltrations in nasal mucosa tissue were also blocked through the regulation of macrophage-inflammatory protein and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 levels. Significance: OMC showed the possibility to regulate AR in activated mast cells and OVA-induced AR models. Hence, we suggest that OMC is a powerful and feasible new agent to suppress AR. Background: Combined treatment with a bisphosphonate and vitamin D has been proposed for postmenopausal osteoporosis. A new, fixed-dose combination tablet of ibandronate plus vitamin D3 has been developed for monthly administration to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the present study was to compare the pharmacokinetics of vitamin D3 administered in 2 forms: a newly developed ibandronate 150-mg/vitamin D3 24,000-IU tablet (DP-R206, test drug) and a stand-alone vitamin D3 24,000-IU tablet (reference drug). A secondary objective was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of DP-R206 in healthy adult male Korean volunteers. Methods: This study was a single-dose, open-label, randomized-sequence, 2-treatment, 2-way crossover trial. Blood samples were collected from 24 hours' predose to 120 hours' postdose. The plasma concentrations of vitamin D3 were analyzed by using a validated HPLC-MS/MS method. Pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated, and the 90% CIs of the ratios of the geometric means of the parameters were determined from the logarithmically transformed data by using ANOVA. Results: Thirty-sex healthy adult male Korean volunteers with a mean (SD) age of 25.8 (2.7) years, a mean height of 174.0 (5.9) cm, and a mean weight of 69.1 (6.2) kg were enrolled; 29 participants completed the study. The 90% CIs of the ratios of the geometric means (test drug/reference drug) of the baseline-corrected Cmax, AUC0-last, and AUC0-∞ values were 0.93 to 1.24, 0.89 to 1.19, and 0.87 to 1.18, respectively. The 90% CIs of the ratios of the geometric means (test drug/reference drug) of the baseline-uncorrected Cmax, AUC0-last, and AUC0-∞ values were 0.93 to 1.24, 0.88 to 1.19, and 0.87 to 1.18, respectively. Eighty-four adverse events (AEs) were reported in 24 of 32 subjects receiving DP-R206, and 14 AEs were reported in 8 of 29 subjects receiving the vitamin D3 24,000-IU tablet. All of the subjects who experienced AEs recovered without sequelae, and no serious AEs were observed. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of reintroducing oxaliplatin to patients with colorectal cancer who developed mild hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs). Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 204 patients who received oxaliplatin-based chemotherapies between January 2003 and August 2009. Desensitization was not used. Results: A total of 44 patients (21.6%) were found to have developed HSRs to oxaliplatin. After the occurrence of an HSR, a mean of three courses of oxaliplatin (range 1-8) were introduced. Following the initial episode, oxaliplatin was reintroduced to 39 patients, resulting in HSR relapse in 89.7% of the patients, including 4 patients (10.3%) with grade 3 reactions. After the second re-exposure of oxaliplatin to 22 patients, HSRs were exhibited in 81.8%, including 2 patients (9.1%) who developed grade 3 reactions. After the third and subsequent re-exposures in 12 patients, all except 1 of the patients developed mild reactions. A total of 7 patients (17.9%) exhibited severe reactions along with the progress of re-exposure. Conclusion: We observed that the majority of patients who experienced mild HSRs to oxaliplatin developed mild reactions on multiple re-exposures, suggesting that it may be feasible to continue oxaliplatin without using desensitization when tolerable after mild reactions. © 2013 S. Background: We have previously identified four distinct groups of asthma patients in Korean cohorts using cluster analysis: (A) smoking asthma, (B) severe obstructive asthma, (C) early-onset atopic asthma, and (D) late-onset mild asthma. Methods and Results: A longitudinal analysis of each cluster in a Korean adult asthma cohort was performed to investigate the clinical significance of asthma clusters over 12 months. Cluster A showed relatively high asthma control test (ACT) scores but relatively low FEV1 scores, despite a high percentage of systemic corticosteroid use. Cluster B had the lowest mean FEV1, ACT, and the quality of life questionnaire for adult Korean asthmatics (QLQAKA) scores throughout the year, even though the percentage of systemic corticosteroid use was the highest among the four clusters. Cluster C was ranked second in terms of FEV1, with the second lowest percentage of systemic corticosteroid use, and showed a marked improvement in subjective symptoms over time. Cluster D consistently showed the highest FEV1, the lowest systemic corticosteroid use, and had high ACT and QLQAKA scores. Conclusion: Our asthma clusters had clinical significance with consistency among clusters over 12 months. These distinctive phenotypes may be useful in classifying asthma in real practice. The sequences of the ccrAB genes from bovine-, canine- and chicken-originating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) epidermidis (MRSE) and bovine methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) aureus (MRSA) were compared to investigate the frequency of intra-species horizontal transfer of the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) complex. Nineteen MRSE strains were isolated from bovine milk, chickens, and dogs, and their genetic characteristics were investigated by multilocus sequence typing and SCCmec typing. Among the animal MRSE strains, the most frequent SCCmec type was type IV, which consisted of the type B mec complex and ccrAB type 2. The ccrA2 and ccrB2 genes were sequenced from the bovine, chicken and canine MRSE strains and compared with those of the bovine MRSA strains. The sequences generally clustered as MRSA and MRSE groups, regardless of the animal source. Additionally, no bovine MRSE sequence was associated with the bovine MRSA groups. Although most of the bovine MRSE and MRSA isolates possessed SCCmec type IV sequences, our results suggest that the intra-species gene transfer of the SCCmec complex between bovine S. aureus and bovine S. epidermidis strains is not a frequent event. Tidal flats are well known as highly productive areas that support the ecosystem by providing essential nutrients. However, they have been increasingly reclaimed as sites for factories or farms in Korea. Recently, an increasing number of Koreans have been calling for the conservation of tidal flats, with the demand that they be designated as protected areas. Thus, policy-makers and the public require monetary information on the conservation value of tidal flats. This paper attempts to assess the conservation value of tidal flats in Shinan, Korea, by using the contingent valuation (CV) method. A CV survey of Korean households was conducted to estimate their willingness to pay (WTP) for the conservation of the Shinan Tidal Flat and the avoidance of its development. In general, the respondents accepted the contingent market, and on average, Korean households were willing to pay a significant amount. The mean WTP for the conservation of the Shinan Tidal Flat was estimated to be approximately KRW 3100 (USD 2.75) per year per household. This implies that Korean households may be willing to pay a total of approximately KRW 54.5 billion (USD 48.3 million) annually for 5 years. Background/Aims: Colonic diverticular diseases are increasing in Korea due to aging of the population and westernization of people's lifestyle. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical predictors associated with the severity of colonic diverticulitis in Korea. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 107 patients who were hospitalized with diverticulitis and underwent abdominopelvic computerized tomography at Dankook University Hospital between March 2002 and August 2011. The severity of colonic diverticulitis was evaluated by using Modified Hinchey classification, stage 0 to stage Ia were classified as mild group and stage Ib to stage IV were classified as severe group. Patients' records were assessed for age, sex, underlying diseases, history of diverticulitis, associated symptoms, location of diverticulitis, white blood cells, and C-reactive protein (CRP). Results: Male to female ratio was 1.6:1 with the mean age of 43.1 years. Eighty-three patients (77.6%) were in the mild group and 24 patients (22.4%) were in the severe group. In multivariated analysis, the clinical predictors associated with the severity of colonic diverticulitis were left location (odds ratio [OR], 7.268; P=0.030), duration of symptoms (≥3 days; OR, 4.174; P=0.022), and elevated CRP (≥5 mg/dL; OR, 4.576; P=0.018). Conclusions: Left location, duration of symptom, and elevated CRP were the meaningful predictors for severity of colonic diverticulitis. Abstract: Bamboo salt (BS) is a specially processed salt according to the traditional recipe using sun-dried salt (SDS) and bamboo in Korea. The present study investigated the effects and mechanism of BS, SDS, NaCl, or mineral mixture (containing zinc, magnesium, and potassium) on ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) animal model. The increased number of rubs was inhibited by the oral administration of BS, SDS, NaCl, mineral mixture, or nose inhalation of BS. The increased levels of IgE, histamine, and interleukin (IL)-1β in serum were reduced by BS. The level of interferon-γ was increased, whereas the level of IL-4 was reduced on the spleen tissue of BS-treated mice. In the BS-treated mice, the number of eosinophils and mast cells infiltration increased by OVA-sensitization were also decreased. Protein levels of inflammatory cytokines were reduced by BS or NaCl administration in the nasal mucosa of the AR mice. In addition, BS inhibited caspase-1 activity in the nasal mucosa tissue. In activated human mast cells, BS significantly inhibited the production of IL-1β and thymic stromal lymphopoietin and activation of caspase-1. Our data indicate that BS has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects by regulating of caspase-1 activation in AR mice and in vitro models. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A 41-year-old woman who was diagnosed with myocarditis presented eosinophilia. Since the antibody against Toxocara canis (T. cams) was positive, we diagnosed that she had visceral larva migrans due to T. canis associated with myocarditis. She was treated with oral albendazole and prednisolone for two weeks, eosinophil count and hepatic enzymes were normalized after completion of treatment. Pharmacovigilance is defined as the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problem. The Korea Institute of Drug Safety and Risk Management (KIDS) was established in April 2012. The main missions of the KIDS are to collect, analyze, evaluate, and manage adverse drug reaction (ADR) data, develop drug utilization review (DUR) criteria, distribute medication guidelines for health professionals, perform retrospective DUR, and perform causality assessment on ADRs, or signals derived from spontaneous reporting or other sources. The KIDS aims to provide evidence to enhance national health quality through a better drug safety and risk management system in Korea. OBJECTIVE: Self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) are useful palliative option and a bridge to surgery in malignant colorectal obstruction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of SEMS to palliate colorectal malignant obstruction. METHODS: Malignant colorectal obstructive patients who underwent SEMS insertion at the National Cancer Center, Korea from January 2004 to June 2008 were enrolled in the study. Patients' clinical characteristics, outcomes and complications for palliative SEMS insertion were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 54 patients were enrolled in the palliative SEMS group and 48 patients with obstructive CRC were included in the SEMS as the bridge to surgery group. Obstruction of the left colon occurred in 52 patients of the palliative SEMS group and all patients in SEMS as bridge to surgery group. For primary SEMS insertion, the technical success (TS) rate was 87.0% and the clinical success (CS) rate 89.4%, while the rates of early and late complications were 24.1% and 23.4%, respectively. There was no procedure-related mortality. Stent migration rate was higher in the cases treated with small diameter and covered type of stents. Median time to reobstruction and migration were 85 and 101 days, respectively. TS and CS rates for SEMS reinsertion were comparable to those for primary SEMS insertion. CONCLUSIONS: Palliative SEMS are effective and favorable procedures for malignant colorectal obstruction but with some complications. Stent migration is associated with covered type and small diameter stents while other factors including length of stent and chemotherapy do not affect stent complications in the present study. Objectives: To determine the clinical characteristics of Korean patients with sporadic oculopharyngodistal myopathy. Methods: Three consecutive unrelated Korean patients with sporadic oculopharyngodistal myopathy participated in this study. Stepwise approaches were performed including careful clinical examination, electrophysiological study, pathology evaluation and genetic study. The literature on oculopharyngodistal myopathy was reviewed. Results: Clinically, our patients showed consistent features of initial distal limb weakness with variable ophthalmoplegia, bulbar weakness or proximal weakness. All the patients showed rimmed vacuoles and myopathic changes. Conclusion: Through the literature review and this study, we believe that initial distal limb weakness is a characteristic finding in patients with oculopharyngodistal myopathy in some ethnic groups. In the detection of monoclonal proteins using capillary electrophoresis (CE), several problems have been described, especially for small amounts of paraprotein, light chain (LC) disease, and cases associated with contrast interference. In this report, we describe 3 unusual cases that showed false-positive peaks due to radiologic contrast interference and the escape of monoclonal LC in CE. In these cases questionable for monoclonal components, conventional gel tests and free LC assays could be helpful to confirm monoclonal gammopathy. Abstract: The number of adult patients with acute hepatitis A (AH-A) has markedly increased during the last 10 years in Korea. Of special note, an increase in severe complications of AH-A, such as severe liver dysfunction and acute kidney injury (AKI), has emerged as a significant problem. The objective of this study was to identify the initial predictors for development of severe AH-A and AKI in AH-A. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 194 patients with AH-A from January 2007 to March 2009. Severe AH-A and AKI developed in 16 (9.3%) and 11 (6.4%) patients, respectively. Independent predictors for severe AH-A were low albumin [odds ratio (OR), 10.91; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.324−51.215; P = 0.002], low total cholesterol (OR, 5.54; 95% CI, 1.389−22.113; P = 0.015), and elevated alanine aminotransferase (OR, 20.87; 95% CI, 4.581–95.067; P < 0.001). Abstract: We study the cross-correlations of buy and sell volumes on the Korean stock market in high frequency. We observe that the pulling effects of volumes are as small as that of returns. The properties of the correlations of buy and sell volumes differ. They are explained by the degree of synchronization of stock volumes. Further, the pulling effects on the minimal spanning tree are studied. In minimal spanning trees with directed links, the large pulling effects are clustered at the center, not uniformly distributed. The identification of Favella ehrenbergii, a marine planktonic ciliate, has largely been based on its lorica features. This approach is potentially problematic given the polymorphic lorica during this organism's life cycle. We isolated a population of F. ehrenbergii from the coastal waters of Incheon, Korea, and revealed its infraciliature using the protargol staining method. Phylogenetic analysis based on small subunit rRNA gene sequences was also performed. Results showed that this population possessed 16 collar membranelles (CM) and about 100 somatic kineties. These features are highly conserved, even in later dividers. As such, the number of CM and somatic kineties can be used as key characteristics for identification of Favella species. Colorectal adenoma and coronary artery disease (CAD) appear to share common risk factors, such as male gender, diabetes mellitus, smoking, and obesity. We investigated the relationship between colorectal adenoma and coronary atherosclerosis, as a risk factor for colorectal adenoma. A cross-sectional study was conducted on Korean men who presented for a health check-up. The subjects were 488 men (217 colorectal adenoma and 271 normal colonoscopic findings) who underwent colonoscopy and coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) on the same day as a screening examination. Advanced colonic lesion was defined as a presence of adenoma with villous component, high-grade dysplasia, and/or with size of ≥1 cm. CTA findings were classified as normal, mild (low-grade atherosclerosis or <50% stenosis), and significant CAD (≥50% stenosis). Abnormal CTA findings included mild and significant CAD. Patients with abnormal CTA findings were more likely to have colorectal adenoma compared with those with normal CTA findings ( P < 0.005). Furthermore, presence of advanced adenoma was significantly associated with significant CAD ( P < 0.01). On multivariate analyses, abnormal CTA findings (OR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.14-2.41, P < 0.01) and significant CAD (OR = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.15-3.35, P < 0.05) were found to be independent risk factors for colorectal adenoma after adjusting for age, current smoking, and metabolic syndrome. In this study, in the population who underwent CTA and colonoscopy for health check-up, prevalence of colorectal adenoma was greater in subjects with low-grade coronary atherosclerosis or significant CAD. Staphylococcus aureus is a major etiological pathogen of bovine mastitis, which triggers significant economic losses in dairy herds worldwide. In this study, S. aureus strains isolated from the milk of cows suffering from mastitis in Korea were investigated by spa typing and staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) gene profiling. Forty-four S. aureus strains were isolated from 26 farms in five provinces. All isolates grouped into five clusters and two singletons based on 14 spa types. Cluster 1 and 2 isolates comprised 38.6% and 36.4% of total isolates, respectively, which were distributed in more than four provinces. SE and SE-like toxin genes were detected in 34 (77.3%) isolates and the most frequently detected SE gene profile was seg, sei, selm, seln, and selo genes (16 isolates, 36.3%), which was comparable to one of the genomic islands, Type I ?Saß. This is a first report of spa types and the prevalence of the recently described SE and SE-like toxin genes among S. aureus isolates from bovine raw milk in Korea. Although many studies have documented the antitumor activities of mushrooms, the association between mushroom intake and breast cancer, defined by hormone receptor status, has received minimal empirical investigation. This study evaluated the association between mushroom intake and the risk of breast cancer according to hormone receptor status among Korean women. Mushroom intake and breast cancer risk were examined among 358 breast cancer patients and 360 cancer-free controls. Intake of mushrooms was assessed using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Greater mushroom intake was related to lower risk of breast cancers among premenopausal women (odds ratio [OR] = 0.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.13-0.91 for the highest vs. the lowest quartile intake). The association was stronger for premenopausal women with estrogen receptor (ER)+/progesterone receptor (PR) + tumors (OR = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.11-0.79 for the highest vs. the lowest quartile intake) than those with ER-/PR- tumors. Our results suggest that high consumption of mushrooms might be related to lower risks for breast cancers among premenopausal women; this association may be more robust among women with hormone receptor positive tumors. A choreotrich ciliate collected in waters off Geoje Island, on the eastern coast of the South Sea of the southern coastal water of Korea was morphologically and biometrically investigated through observations of permanent preparations after protargol impregnations. Morphological data and ciliary patterns indicated that the ciliate should be identified as Strombidinopsis acuminata based on the number of somatic kineties. The vertical distribution of the population abundance was also examined in relation to environmental conditions: higher abundances occurred in surface water with higher temperature (22–23 °C), lower salinity (32 psu), and higher concentration (ca 10 μg/L) of chlorophyll a. The 18S rRNA gene of specimens from clonal cultures isolated from natural assemblages was sequenced. While this isolate of S. acuminata is closer to Strombidinopsis jeokjo (99.6–99.8%) than other isolates of S. acuminata (<99.0%), monophyly of S. acuminata was not rejected by the AU test. We discuss the discordance between morphological and molecular data for Strombidinopsis. The article discusses special education and social services in Korea. It says that few services were limited to persons with visual impairments in approximately 1445 to 1876, while 1894 sees the introduction of special education. With the government's help, accordingly, it has developed throughout 2010 along with social service, when laws, schools, and programs were established. It adds that the government should supervise its services and finance them to improve educational and social services.

ABSTRACT Backgroud and aim: We investigated the incidence of codon 249 mutation of p53 in hepatocelluar carcinoma (HCC) and the relation between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in HCC and survival of the patients. Methods: Forty-one cases of HCC from 1988 to 2007 were retrieved from the files of department of pathology, Chungnam National University Hospital. We performed single strand confirmation polymorphism (SSCP) and direct DNA sequencing for detection of p53 mutation and immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibody to COX-2. Results: SSCP and direct DNA sequencing revealed a p53 mutation at exon 7 in one of 41 cases (2.4%). The mutation was observed at codon 249 and consisted of a G-T transversion in the third position of this codon, resulting in an amino acid change from arginine to serine (missense mutation). Positive COX-2 staining (score ≥ 100) was observed in thirty-three of 41 cases (80.5%) and high score (score ≥ 200) in 15 of 41 (36.6%). The high-score group showed a worse survival than the low-score group (score < 200) in Fisher's exact test with confidence level at 90%. In May 2002, China decided not to repatriate North Korean asylum seekers who fled to Shenyang. The decision was not only in contravention of the 1986 North Korea-China bilateral repatriation agreement, but also constituted China's repudiation of its policy denying refugee status to North Koreans in China. What explains China's change in policy in the Shenyang case? We argue that transnational advocacy networks (TANs) for North Korean human rights (NKHR) played a significant role in China's non-repatriation decision. Theoretically, the article develops a set of five propositions that specify an organizational mechanism through which TANs effectively work, and use social network analysis to test these propositions. Empirically, we employ both qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis (the combination of discourse and content analysis) in order to capture the crucial role of TANs in China's policy change. Background and Aim: The prevalence of being overweight has risen remarkably in Korea. This study sought to clarify the relationship between being overweight and surgical outcomes in gastric cancer patients. Methods: A total of 410 patients who underwent curative total gastrectomies with D2 dissection from January 2000 to December 2003 were retrospectively studied from a prospectively designed database. The patients were assigned to two groups based upon their body mass index (BMI): non-overweight, BMI < 25 kg/m2; overweight, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. Perioperative surgical outcomes, postoperative morbidity, mortality, recurrence, and prognosis were analyzed. Results: The overweight group had longer operation time and more postoperative complications than the non-overweight group. The two groups were similar in terms of transfusion volumes, postoperative bowel movement, time to initiation of a soft diet, and postoperative hospital stay. Patterns of recurrence and cumulative survival rates were similar for each group. Multivariate analysis showed that being overweight was not a risk factor for recurrence or poor prognosis. Conclusion: Although being overweight was associated with increased operation time and higher risk of complications in gastric cancer patients undergoing curative total gastrectomy, it had no effect on recurrence or long-term survival. Loss or reduced E-cadherin expression and aberrant expression of N-cadherin have been associated with invasiveness of human carcinoma cells and poor prognosis. The role of E- and N-cadherin, however, in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not yet been elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression pattern of E- and N-cadherin in surgically resected HCC specimens according to their relationship with clinicopathological features. The expression patterns of E- and N-cadherin were evaluated on immunohistochemistry in 68 specimens of HCC and adjacent non-tumor tissue. The most different expression pattern between HCC and non-tumor tissue was the decreased staining intensity of E-cadherin ( n = 37, 54%) and the dot-like discontinuous staining of N-cadherin ( n = 35, 55%). Decreased intensity of E-cadherin and discontinuous staining of N-cadherin in HCC was correlated with advanced stage. The risk factors for expression patterns related to recurrence were loss of E-cadherin expression (odds ratio (OR) = 3.6; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1–12.4) and discontinuous staining of N-cadherin (OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 0.8–3.2). In conclusion, discontinuous staining of N-cadherin and loss of E-cadherin expression in HCC predicts a high risk of recurrence after surgical treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article investigates an argument-adjunct asymmetry in English as a second language (ESL) learners' acquisition of inversion in wh-questions. A generative approach ( DeVilliers, 1991 ; Stromswold, 1990 ) claims that inversion is acquired earlier in argument wh-questions than in adjunct wh-questions, the asymmetry resulting from their different structural properties. However, an input frequency approach ( Rowland & Pine, 2000, 2003 ; Rowland, Pine, Lieven, & Theakston, 2005 ) proposes that individual wh-word + auxiliary combinations are acquired based on their input frequency, with no argument-adjunct asymmetry being predicted other than as an indirect consequence of a frequency difference. Two studies were conducted: one acquisition study with a grammaticality judgment task and one input study with a corpus analysis of the learners' input sources. The results show that learners are more successful at subject-auxiliary inversion in argument wh-questions than in adjunct wh-questions and that the argument-adjunct asymmetry cannot be traced to input frequency. The results of the studies here run counter to the input frequency account but conform to the prediction of a structure-based generative approach: There exists an argument-adjunct asymmetry in the acquisition of inversion in wh-questions because of the different syntactic properties of two types of wh-phrases. Background and Aims: Although the incidence of colorectal cancer is rising in Asian countries, there are no guidelines for its screening in this region due in part to the lack of epidemiological data regarding colorectal neoplasms. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of colorectal neoplasms in average-risk Koreans and to assess the effectiveness of screening colonoscopy in Korea. Methods: The prevalence of colorectal neoplasms was assessed by primary screening colonoscopy in 5086 consecutive asymptomatic adults (males 70.5%; age 20–84 years) with no risk factors for colorectal cancer. Results: The overall prevalence of colorectal neoplasms in the 5086 subjects was 21.9% and this increased linearly with age. Among the 2435 subjects aged ≥50 years (males 66.7%; mean age 57.7 years), the prevalence of all colorectal neoplasms was 30.2% (males 35.9% vs females 18.7%; P < 0.001), while advanced neoplasms accounted for only 4.1% (males 5.1% vs females 2.0%; P < 0.001). The prevalence of advanced neoplasms in Korean men of a specific age group was similar to that of Korean women in the 10-years older age group. Also, Koreans in a specific age group showed a prevalence of advanced neoplasms similar to that of Westerners in the 10-years younger age group. Conclusions: Colonoscopy is a useful modality for colorectal cancer screening in Korea, as established in Western countries. However, the screening colonoscopy may begin at an older age for Koreans than for Westerners. Some epidemiological literature has observed that air pollution effects on health differed across regional or individual socioeconomic position. This study evaluated whether regional and individual socioeconomic position, as indicated by health insurance premiums, modified the effect of air pollution on hospital visits for asthma. Effects of ambient air pollutants (particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone) on 92,535 emergency out-patient hospital visits for asthma in Seoul, Korea during 2002 were estimated using case-crossover analysis, adjusting for time trend, weather conditions, and seasonality. Next, interactions between air pollutants and Korean National Health Insurance premium (1) for the individual patient and (2) averaged across the patient’s residence district, were entered, first singly then jointly, in the models. Relative risks of emergency outpatient hospital visits were all positively and significantly associated with interquartile increases for selected lags for all air pollutants. In the regression model with interaction terms for both individual premium and regional-average premium, associations with all five-air pollutants ranged from 1.03 to 1.09 times higher among the lowest premium districts compared to the highest premium districts. Of all the pollutants, nitrogen dioxide showed the strongest associations in lower premium districts compared to the higher premium districts. Individual socioeconomic position did not modify the associations in either the single or joint interaction models. Ciliates are highly diverse in the benthos where there are rare species to be unrevealed and described. By isolating species during successive and diversified cultivations, we discovered several new and interesting taxa from the top layer sediment of a muddy site in the Ganghwa tidal flat. These include three new species Spirodysteria ganghwaensis n. sp., Uronemella parafilificum n. sp., Zosterodasys minuta n. sp., and one poorly known form Loxophyllum chaetonotum Borror 1965 . The morphology of live cells and infraciliature of these four species are described based on living observations, protargol impregnations, and morphometrics. Diagnoses and improved definitions are also provided. The newly established genus Spirodysteria n. g. differs from Dysteria mainly in its spirally twisted body shape. Spirodysteria kahli ( Tucolesco 1962 ) n. comb. (formerly Dysteria kahli Tucolesco 1962 ) has been included in this new genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
