Several komatiite-hosted Ni-Cu-PGE deposits occur in Archean and Paleoproterozoic Greenstone Belts in Finland. Some of these deposits are enriched in platinum-group elements, especially in Pd and Pt. The Lomalampi PGE-(Cu-Ni) deposit is associated with a peridotitic cumulate body of the Sattasvaara Formation in the Paleoproterozoic Central Lapland Greenstone Belt. The sulfides in the deposit occur in disseminated form. Whole rock sulfur contents are 0.4-2 wt%, and Ni contents are <0.5 wt% and Cu <0.4 wt%, while PGE contents exceed 500 ppb. The sulfides consist of magmatic pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite and have not been substantially modified by metamorphic processes. Palladium minerals are associated with sulfides and silicates, but the only Pt-bearing phase, sperrylite, occurs mainly within silicates. The host rock of the deposit is a chromite undersaturated Al-undepleted high-Mg basalt or low-Mg komatiite. In contrast to most other komatiite-hosted Ni-Cu-PGE deposits world-wide that have Pt/Pd around 0.5, the Lomalampi deposit is enriched in Pt over Pd (Pt/Pd = 2). Only a weak contamination signal in the host-cumulate is evident in REE data, but a strong signal is evident in S-isotope ratios (δS + 10 ‰ to +15 ‰), which differ substantially from the mantle value (0 ± 2 ‰). Geochemical characteristics (e.g., PGE enrichment) and R-factor modeling indicate certain similarities between Lomalampi and the Raglan Ni-Cu-PGE deposits of Canada. The combined data suggest that Lomalampi formed through contamination of a PGE-rich magnesian magma with S rich country rocks. This suggests that the extensive Central Lapland Greenstone Belt is favorable for komatiite-hosted Ni-Cu-PGE deposits, which are substantially enriched in platinum and palladium. Abstract: A very large surface inversion, which would not have been detected at the official recording height of 2 m above the mire surface, was recorded at the snow surface of an earth hummock in Lapland. The maximum inversion was 35 °C, and the monthly temperature departure was 7.8 °C in December 1992. The characteristics of the surface inversion are compared with conditions during another winter when no long inversion periods occurred. The presence of this surface inversion may explain the formation of new permafrost in pounus, even when official records showed no unusually low temperatures. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The new gregarious parasitoid Meteorus acerbiavorus sp. nov. (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) was reared from the cocoons of Acerbia alpina (Quensel) (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae) in north-western Finnish Lapland. This species belongs to Meteorus rubens (Nees) species group and differs from the most related M. rubens in the following features: the eyes densely setose; the median lobe of the mesoscutum, scutellum, mesopleuron, and the hind coxa entirely or at least partly rugulose-granulate or rugose-areolate and sometimes with granulation; the ovipositor subapically with distinct dorsal node; the ventral borders of the first metasomal tergum weakly separated by narrow space in its basal half; the colour of the body and legs mostly or entirely dark; the fore wing more or less darkened. Phylogenetic relationships among several Meteorus species close to M. rubens including new M. acerbiavorus were investigated based on DNA sequence fragments of the mitochondrial COI and the nuclear 28S rDNA genes. In this article we use ethnographic and discourse analytic approaches to examine how the labelling of tourist souvenirs affects, and is in turn affected by, the local political economy of language of a tourist destination, which is also a minority language space. We begin by arguing for the importance of our particular focus of study, souvenir labels, in the process of global and local tourism, and consequently as evidence of the interplay of languages, politics and economics. We then consider the distinctive features of the local political economy of language in our particular case study, the multilingual Sámi village of Inari in Northern Finland. In a related discussion, we describe how Inari functions as a site of experiential cultural tourism, and how the purchase of souvenirs is part of the tourist experience. We then go on to describe a number of practices that we have observed in the choice and use of linguistic and visual resources for the labelling of souvenirs in Inari, the delicate balancing act that takes place in these practices between authenticity and mobility, and how this reflects and is reflected in the local political economy of language. Tarkasteltavana oleva turistikohde on alkuperäisenä saamelaiskylänä markkinoitu Inari, joka sijaitsee uhanalaisten saamenkielten kotiseutualueella Pohjois-Suomessa. Aluksi kuvaamme matkamuistojen tarkastelun kiinnostavuutta kielten, politiikan ja talouden tutkimuksen risteymässä. Seuraavaksi tarkastelemme Inarin kieliympäristöä ja sen nivoutumista paikalliseen poliittiseen talouteen. Tämän jälkeen kuvaamme Inarissa myynnissä olevien matkamuistojen ja niiden nimilapuissa tehtyjä kielellisiä ja visuaalisia valintoja. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of a diamicton-stratified sand deposit have been studied in the Veskoniemi area, near Lake Inarijärvi in central Finnish Lapland. Test pit excavations were used for stratigraphical investigations. Till-covered laminar and crossbedded sands were dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). Ages range between 21.0 ± 1.5 and 22.4 ± 1.6 ka for laminated sands at upper levels and 39 ± 3 and 46 ± 3 ka for sands at deeper levels. These dating results strengthen the evidence for a Middle Weichselian interstadial in northern Finland during oxygen isotope stage 3, and can be compared with other results in eastern and southern Lapland. This is the first time that sediments from the Middle and Late Weichselian contact have been identified in Finland. These new dating results indicate that an ice-free period could have lasted from halfway through the Middle Weichselian to the beginning of the Late Weichselian about 22?25 ka ago in northern Finland.
